The figure indicates an increase of 22 percent against the same period last year, while some $ 6 billion dollars were spent on the precious metal. Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, India, as well as Poland and Hungary were the leader among gold net buyers.
The reasons pushing Russia, Turkey and other countries facing US sanctions to buy more gold seem clear. But why are other countries bolstering their gold reserves and why do they find it necessary to diversify their holdings? RT talked to Claudio Grass, an independent precious metal advisory based out in Switzerland to find out why emerging economies are so active in stockpiling gold bullion.
RT: For years, Russia, China, India as well as many Asian countries have been stockpiling gold. More recently, countries like Poland and Hungary have begun to increase national gold reserves. What’s behind the move?
Claudio Grass: Let’s look at the core motivation that drives anyone to become an owner of physical gold. Whoever buys physical precious metals, be it an institution, an individual or as we see now, central banks from different countries, largely have the same reasons for doing so: They all want to regain independence and sovereignty. This is achieved by decoupling from a financial system that is unsustainable, overstretched and founded on nothing but faith in government. As this faith is shaken and public trust corroded, it is wise for any individual or institution to own real goods directly themselves, rather than be another investor in paper bets and hope for the best. It is also useful to remember that many central banks are in the habit of publicly promoting one position but acting on another. While they might exude confidence in the economy and bask in what they promote as the success of their reckless monetary policies, they fully understand that gold is really one of the best reliable hedges in times of economic turmoil. That’s why we see this massive buildup of physical gold stocks. In other words, when it comes to taking one’s investing cues from institutional actors; it might be wise to follow to the old adage “Do as I do, not as I say”.
RT: It seems clear why Russia is increasing gold reserves, but why are countries in Eastern Europe like Hungary and Poland doing it?
CG: Besides the above mentioned main reasons, I hear from my trusted friends and partners in Poland that there is a sizable opposition among the people to the EU Migration policies, which is only set to grow in the future. Social division and political friction is likely to increase, which is always the case when you force people to accept and even pay for something they don’t want. The same goes for the people of Hungary. What I find interesting when talking to people in the East, is that having lived under communism until roughly 25 years ago, they now see the same signs emerging. Unlike many of us in the West, they still remember history and rightfully dread its repetition, so they oppose centralized power, especially when it’s coming from Brussels. They know that absolute power corrupts absolutely and all the devastation and human suffering that comes with it. Their central banks are not blind to the rising tensions with the EU and the grave risks of further escalation. Thus, their gold buying strategy sounds reasonable to me and in accordance with the wisdom of Pericles, who said “the key is not to predict the future, but to prepare for it.”
RT: Are these countries bracing for a potential currency crisis?
CG: Of course. It is impossible to create wealth out of nothing, and even though that is an eternal and universal truth, it hasn’t stopped states from trying to do exactly that. Unfortunately, if history teaches anything, it is that we don’t learn from it. Now we are stuck in a system that came 35 years ago and took us from 20 percent interest rates to zero and negative rates. We are sitting on a gigantic bubble in terms of illusionary financial “wealth”, at the end of a long-term debt cycle and the bill for the massive credit spending of the past decade is about to come in. Central planners can manipulate the markets and the economy only for so long before their actions lead to a predictable bust, and that pattern is becoming apparent to more and more people. As public faith in governments collapses, so will the value of their currency.
RT: Why aren’t Western countries doing it? It seems they are only interested in gold-traded ETFs. Do they not believe in (physical) gold anymore?
CG: That’s simple: because people who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. For some time, this system worked because America was able to prop up the world economy with USD-IOU’s. It worked as long as Americans continued to consume as much as possible with money they didn’t have and just print out of thin air. However, once the debt is so huge that they can’t keep up the illusion for much longer, it is the beginning of the end.
When it comes to building physical gold positions, I think complacency and overconfidence are the key markers of the western approach to the future at the moment. We see this is the markets too, in the blunt denial of warnings and cold facts in favor of extending the rally with wishful thinking. The same, arguably, applies when opting for paper gold over physical. Realism has lost over mindless optimism, placing the East at a significant advantage during the next economic crash.
RT: What are the dangers of not having significant gold reserves?
CG: Lord Rees-Mogg summarized it once as follows: “Governments lie; bankers lie; even auditors sometimes lie: gold tells the truth.” Therefore, people who buy gold understand that it is their personal insurance when the illusion fades and the trust in the current institutions crumbles. The prudent approach is to become your own central bank, by building up your own reserves in the form of a hard, tangible, real physical good that has no counter-party risk and has proved its reliability by serving as real money for 5000 years.

The Italian boss took training this morning then met club chiefs for talks with tensions around Vicarage Road high.
The Hornets board had been made aware that a number of players would try to leave if Mazzarri remained in charge.
Mazzarri still hasn’t learnt English – he has continued to speak Italian in his press conferences – and that in itself has annoyed players. That, coupled with a lack of days off, has left the squad calling for Mazzarri to go.
Mazarri joined Watford in June having previously been in charge of Inter Milan. He has managed 40 games, winning 12, drawing seven and losing 21.
The 55-year-old signed a three-year deal last year – but will leave after just one campaign.
Chairman Scott Duxbury released a statement this afternoon which read: “After the board discussed with Walter Mazzarri the club’s future goals and aspirations, it was decided he will be stepping down from his position as the club’s head coach after the final game of the 2016/17 season.
“We thank Walter and his staff for the contribution they have made to Watford Football Club over the past year.”
Former Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri has been chalked up as the bookies’ early favourite to replace him.
Alan Pardew, Nigel Pearson (both 8/1) and Kenny Jackett (12/1) are also in the running.
There’s also the possibility Watford could move for Hull boss Marco Silva.
Sceptics slammed the decision to appoint Silva in January but he impressed during his five-month spell in charge of Hull.
Watford are 16th in the Premier League having lost 4-3 to Chelsea on Monday. They have taken just three points from a possible 21.
Spaniard Quique Sanchez Flores was sacked by Watford last summer – despite guiding the club to the FA Cup semi-finals and comfortably retaining their status in the top division.
Slavisa Jokanovic departed a year earlier after leading Watford into the Premier League.
Mazzarri was the seventh Watford manager hired by the Pozzo family since they bought the club in 2012.
The Italian was sacked nine months after winning the Premier League title and, during an interview on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, suggested someone behind the scenes could have been to blame.
That led many to speculate that Shakespeare – the former assistant who replaced him as manager – was the man responsible. But on the eve of their Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Atletico Madrid, Shakespeare stopped short of categorically denying he was involved in the sacking, instead insisting he can sleep easy at night.
“Free speech is there for anybody, I don’t have a problem with it,” he said.
“I’m quite comfortable with my own conscience, so I can’t do anything about that.
“I was at the Under-23s last night but I have been filled in about it [the interview with Ranieri. “I have seen clips of it. I think Claudio was in good humour and came across as I know him, but from my first interview, I spoke to him and he thanked me for my time.
“I thanked him and there has never been any falling out. It’s football and I’m glad to see that he is enjoying his football again.”
“I think [in the interview] he said, ‘maybe’ [it was someone behind the scenes who pushed for Ranieri to be sacked], that’s the quote that I heard this morning. But my stance is still the same. We never had a falling out.
“I haven’t seen the interview live, but I think I have answered the question.
Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel added: “I haven’t seen his interview. I was out for dinner with family when the match was on. We have always had the utmost respect for Claudio and what he achieved was unbelievable.
“It was a shame how things ended but we now just want to save ourselves in the Champions League.”
Speaking in public for the first time since his sacking while a guest on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Ranieri refused to name the people he was referring to but dismissed rumours the players stuck the knife in.
“Maybe it was someone behind me,” said Ranieri. “I had a little problem the year before and we won the Premier League title. Maybe this year, when we lose, these people push a little more.
“I don’t want to tell [who I’m talking about]. I’m a serious man, a loyal man. What I had to say, I said face-to-face.
“But I don’t believe rumours the players spoke to the Leicester owners about sacking me. The players got to experience something totally different. In pre-season they played against big teams, went all over the world. I don’t believe the players killed me.”
Ranieri believes Leicester had finally turned the corner in their struggling season his side put in a strong performance against Sevilla in the Champions League last-16 first leg, despite losing 2-1.
“The turning point was the Sevilla match,” said Ranieri. “So it was very surprising and very disappointing to find out I was sacked.”
Leicester ended their five-game losing streak in the Premier League with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Liverpool in Shakespeare’s first game in charge since Claudio Ranieri’s sacking.
Shakespeare, 53, is expected to take charge of the champion’s visit of Hull on Saturday (3pm) as the Leicester board continue their search.
“I can’t see why not, but it’s the chairman’s decision,” Simpson said when asked of Shakespeare’s chances of landing the role on a permanent basis.
“It’s up to him and he owns the club, he is passionate about the club.
“Those decisions are nothing to do with us but, for me, (Shakespeare) has been really good. He is a top coach, a top guy and he has taken it on naturally.
“He has kept it simple and told us what he wanted to do and we’ve done that so let’s hope we can carry it on for him.”
Simpson also joined Jamie Vardy, Kasper Schmeichel and Marc Albrighton in playing down media reports suggesting a player revolt led to Ranieri’s dismissal last Thursday.
“It’s not nice to hear that,” the 30-year-old added. “The chairman is his own man and he makes his decisions. All we have to do is play football.
“We know we haven’t played how we can – we’re first to admit that – but we have to carry on. Leicester carries on.”
TheMailOnline claim the former England boss held secret talks with Leicester representatives last Friday in south-west London following Claudio Ranieri’s controversial sacking.
It is claimed the 69-year-old is admired as a long-term successor to Ranieri by Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.
Hodgson is said to be interested in a return to management following his stint with England and Srivaddhanaprabha apparently sees him as the man to turn Leicester’s disastrous season around.
However, Hodgson is not entirely convinced by the idea of taking over at the King Power Stadium.
But the Leicester owner is keen to get him on board and is likely to hold further talks in the coming days and weeks with Hodgson in a bid to convince him to take the reins.
Craig Shakespeare is likely to remain in interim charge after guiding Leicester to an emphatic 3-1 win over Liverpool last night, but he could just be keeping the seat warm for the arrival of Hodgson.
Hodgson said in December: “Football is very much in my blood and very much part of my life.
“I want to be involved in football. I feel good. If an offer comes along that I think is the right one for me and for the club, of course I shall be happy to take it.
“When I’m not in some way actively involved I feel a part of my life is not being fulfilled.”
Playing under caretaker boss Craig Shakespeare, the rejuvenated Foxes destroyed Liverpool to claim their first Premier League win of 2017 as Jamie Vardy grabbed a brace to sandwich a stunning strike from Danny Drinkwater.
Vardy last week took to social media to describe speculation that he influenced Leicester‘s decision to sack Ranieri as “completely untrue, unfounded and extremely hurtful”.
And after scoring his first Premier League goals since December 10 in a result which lifted Leicester out of the drop zone and up to 15th, Vardy said: “We’ve come in for a lot of unfair stick with things that have been in the Press but you’ve seen that the lads wanted to react.
“The performance did that and we want to do it consistently. I couldn’t put my finger on why we haven’t been doing that regularly. We’ve been working hard and it has just not been happening.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a case of more effort. I’ve been very frustrated with the amount of goals I’ve got this season but hopefully these will push me on.
“We needed to show that we’ve got that fight and win or lose, as long as the performance was right, we could hold our heads up high.”
Drinkwater, another star of last season’s title success under Ranieri, said: “It feels good. We need to enjoy it and build on it from here. You can call it a reaction because we’ve come in for a bit of stick.”
A delighted Shakespeare said: “I could see in their eyes that they were up to the fight in the warm-up. It is one game but it is a start.”
The result dealt a huge blow to woeful Liverpool’s hopes of Champions League qualification and manager Jurgen Klopp admitted there was no justification for such an abject surrender.
He said: “I have already spoken in the dressing room to the players, that performance was not enough for sure. We have to try with everything we have to do better.
“If you are not good enough you lose football games. I have no reason for this at the moment. You can always find excuses but I’m not ready to look for one.
“I’m not worried – I probably should be but we have a week to prepare for next game. We are all playing for our future here – I don’t want to be too serious but that’s how it is.”
Just 48 hours before the EFL Cup final, the Manchester United manager wore the initials “CR” on his top in his press conference yesterday in support of Claudio Ranieri, before launching his scathing attack on the Foxes squad, many of who signed lucrative new contracts after lifting the Premier League championship last season.
Jose Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea in similar circumstances last season amid reports of a players’ revolt but said his experience was “peanuts” compared to Leicester’s treatment of the man who led them to the most unexpected title in football history last season.
He said: “Probably the season started with the typical selfishness of others, people thinking about new contracts, people thinking about more money, people thinking about leaving and forgetting who helped them to reach a certain level.
“This is not just football, it’s a bit of our world. Some principles are going away a little bit. I’m really sorry about it but I lived a similar experience.
“I thought last season when I was sacked as a champion it was a giant negative thing, now I realise it was peanuts to what happened with Claudio.
“If some of the stories I am reading are true, or are a little bit true, it’s hard to find words to justify that.”
Former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini was the early favourite to replace his fellow Italian, with former Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink, and ex-England supremo Roy Hodgson also on Leicester’s radar, along with Huddersfield’s up and coming boss David Wagner.
Ranieri’s former assistant Craig Shakespeare will be in caretaker charge for the visit of Liverpool on Monday night – and he has also thrown his hat into the ring for the job.
“Do I think I could do the job? Yes,” said Shakespeare. “Does it faze me? No. Claudio is held in respect by supporters and quite rightly so. We need them to get behind the team and all pull together.
“I can’t tell fans how they should behave. The players are very hurt and they will be disappointed like everybody else that the manger has lost his job.”
Ranieri issued a statement in which he said: “Yesterday my dream died. After the euphoria of last season and being crowned Premier League champions all I dreamt of was staying with Leicester City, the club I love, for always. Sadly this was not to be.
“I wish to thank my wife Rosanna and all my family for their never ending support during my time at Leicester.”
Mourinho added: “My shirt with the his [CR] initials is my little my homage to somebody who who wrote the most beautiful history of the Premier League. He was somebody who deserved to have the stadium named after him but he has been sacked.”
Mourinho was not so charitable when replacing Ranieri when he was sacked by Chelsea in 2004. He said back then: ““It is really not my fault if he was considered a loser at Chelsea.”
And he went further four years later, adding: “Ranieri…has the mentality of someone who doesn’t need to win. He is almost 70 years old. He has won a Supercup and another small trophy and he is too old to change his mentality.
“He’s old and he hasn’t won anything. I studied Italian five hours a day for many months to ensure I could communicate with the players, media and fans. Ranieri had been in England for five years and still struggled to say ‘good morning’ and ‘good afternoon’.”
And now the Italian has had his say in an emotional statement.
“Yesterday my dream died,” Ranieri said.
“After the euphoria of last season and being crowned Premier League champions all I dreamt of was staying with Leicester City, the club I love, for always.
“Sadly this was not to be.
“I wish to thank my wife Rosanna and all my family for their never ending support during my time at Leicester.
“My thanks go to Paolo and Andrea who accompanied me on this wonderful journey. To Steve Kutner and Franco Granello for bringing me the opportunity to become a Champion.
“Mostly I have to thank Leicester City Football Club. The adventure was amazing and will live with me forever.
“Thank you to all the journalists and the media who came with us and enjoyed reporting on the greatest story in football.
“My heartfelt thanks to everybody at the Club, all the players, the staff, everybody who was there and was part of what we achieved.
“But mostly to the supporters. You took me into your hearts from day one and loved me. I love you too. No one can ever take away what we together have achieved, and I hope you think about it and smile every day the way I always will.
“It was a time of wonderfulness and happiness that I will never forget. It’s been a pleasure and an honour to be a Champion with all of you.”
Leicester beat the 5,000-1 odds to win the Premier League title last year but are sliding towards the Championship and could be bottom of the table by the time they play on Monday.
Craig Shakespeare has been placed in temporary charge and insists the players did not get Ranieri the boot,
“I am not aware of any senior players going to the owners (to express their frustration at results). That is news to me. A lot of it has been speculation, no foundation,” he said.
“I’ve not had one problem with the players. There was a lot of frustration because of the results but he (Ranieri) had not lost the dressing room.”
But he is confident of turning the club’s fortunes for the job.
“Confidence can go very quickly but it can come back very quickly. My aim is to restore that confidence quickly,” he said.
JOSE MOURINHO has paid a special tribute to sacked Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri.
