Man Utd transfer news

Man Utd transfer news: Claude Puel says he is confident of keeping Harry Maguire (Image: GETTY)

Jose Mourinho has identified Maguire as a top target after growing frustrated over the deal for Toby Alderweireld.

Leicester though are ready to play hardball and would demand a world record fee for a defender to let him leave for Manchester United.

Maguire only joined Leicester last summer from Hull in a deal worth up to £17m.

But an impressive World Cup has seen his value rocket and Foxes boss Puel wants to keep him.

“I am confident about the presence of Harry [Maguire] for this season. He is a very good player for us,” Puel told Sky Sports News.

“I was not surprised about his performance during this World Cup. We saw his progress during the second half of the season.

“He was great and played very well. It was not a surprise to see him perform well at this level in the international game.

“Of course for us he is a very good player – I wait for him with impatience because we need Harry and we need also Jamie [Vardy] because they are Leicester.”

However Puel refused to confirm Leicester would offer him a new deal in a bid to keep him.

“For us I think we have a good squad with good ambition. We have the capacity and the ability to keep our best player and to continue to improve and to perform together,” Puel added.

“If we lose a player just a few days before the beginning of the season without the ability to replace him because the transfer window for the Premier League will finish on August 9.

“To change the scene before the start of the season is not possible. He [Maguire] can continue to perform with Leicester and improve and that is the important thing always with a young player.

“To continue with us would be a fantastic thing for him and for us of course. I am confident with this and I think we can give him good ambition and to perform together with Leicester would be the best answer.”

Mourinho has admitted he is frustrated with the club’s transfer dealings and says he wants two more players – understood to be Maguire and Ivan Perisic – but believes he will only get one before the window shuts.

However Alderweireld and Barcelona’s Yerry Mina are options while Willian is an option in attack.

Mourinho has been told he must sell before buying more players after only three new signings this summer.

Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant have come in and Mourinho is a foul mood over the dealings.

Mourinho pulled no punches after his side’s 4-1 defeat to arch rivals Liverpool in Michigan on Saturday, saying he had got “nothing” from the game – a theme that has run throughout the crisis-hit tour of the States.

United and Liverpool drew a crowd of 101,254 to the Big House but Mourinho said he would not have bought a ticket to watch the game – which is certain to anger organisers of the International Champions Cup.

It is understood United are being paid around £30million for playing in the ICC, with Mourinho having effectively told fans to stay away from their final game against Real, a potential money-spinner for tour organisers.

“The atmosphere was good but if I was them I wouldn’t have come,” said Mourinho. “I wouldn’t have spent my money to watch these two teams.

“I watched Chelsea against Inter earlier and people had decided the beach was better. The stadium was empty.

“This is not our team, not our squad. We started the game with almost half of the players not going to belong to our squad. So this is not our squad.

“If you say reinforcements, you’re saying players I’d like to buy, to add to the squad, then that’s another thing. But this is not even 30 per cent of my squad, so don’t look to this that way.

“In relation to this game, we have four or five players who are dead, because they care for the club, for the team.

“They tried to give everything, even risking themselves because they don’t want to let all the kids do it by themselves.

“We’re trying to play these matches as best we can. But we can’t do it. What did this game give me? Nothing at all.

“We’re not playing here to improve the team or the dynamic, we’re playing here to just survive and have some not very ugly results.”

And he vented his frustrations on the transfers.

“I would like to have two more players, but I think I’m not going to have two,” said Mourinho. “I think it’s possible I’m going to have one.

“I gave a list to my club of five names a few months ago and I’ll wait to see if it’s possible to have one of these players.

“If it’s possible it’s possible, if not, it’s not. If it’s not possible, we keep fighting and working and believing in the players that we have.”

Claude Monet exhibition: Making light of building work https://briefnews.eu/claude-monet-exhibition-making-light-of-building-work/ https://briefnews.eu/claude-monet-exhibition-making-light-of-building-work/#respond Sun, 25 Mar 2018 20:09:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/claude-monet-exhibition-making-light-of-building-work/

The Doge's Palace - Claude MonetBROOKLYN MUSEUM OF ART, NEW YORK

Known for his water lilies, a new exhibition shows another side to Claude Monet’s work

But a new exhibition at the National Gallery – the first purely Monet show staged in London for more than 20 years – will focus on how he used buildings in his work.

Monet and Architecture will feature 77 paintings, almost a quarter of which come from private collections, offering a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see these architecturally-focused works in one place.

The exhibition is divided into three non-chronological parts. the Village And the Picturesque focuses on what curator Professor Richard Thomson describes as “buildings that were old, historic and perhaps a bit ramshackle”, and wonderful pastoral views.

The City And the Modern is about Monet’s fascination with the rapid growth of Paris and of resorts such as Trouville on the Normandy coast.

Finally, the monument And the mysterious chronicles later work abroad, with particular emphasis on Venice and London, and includes his studies of Rouen Cathedral.

He painted more than 30 pieces here, at different times of day and year, showing the changes under different lighting conditions. seven will be in the exhibition.

Professor Thomson, who is Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh, explains: “Previous exhibitions have only taken a slice of his career; this one takes a look at works from his entire 60-year span.

“It’s not a chronological show but one which shows how Monet used buildings for different purposes in his work. Buildings can give regular shapes in the irregularity of nature, add colour, provide screens on which light played. They can give a sense of modernity and show how the world is changing very rapidly.

“And they can have psychological importance – in the Customs officer’s House, for instance, the building is standing as a human presence where there are no figures.

”What comes across very strongly from the show is how the world changed in Monet’s 86 years, for example, the rise of what was considered “picturesque” which led to people wanting to see places with historic associations and beauty, hence the rise of tourism as a business.

This began in the 1820s after memories of departed Emperor Napoleon’s fondness for classical architecture, churches and castles drew more people to go to see the same things.

There was also a publication called Voyages Pittoresques Et Romantiques Dans L’Ancienne France, a travel guide illustrated with lithographic prints of historic sites, published between the 1820s and 1878, which gave people ideas of where to visit.

Combined with the expanding rail network, it meant that resorts developed quickly and Monet and his family (first wife Camille and baby son Jean) visited Trouville in 1870 and recorded how it had become popular in the paintings the Beach At Trouville and on the Boardwalk At Trouville, showing tourists walking along the seafront and past the new buildings, and using a marquee set up for their entertainment.

Ironically, when Monet was painting his Rouen Cathedral series in the 1890s, he complained of 600 tourists with cameras spoiling his view.

In 1888, kodak started producing a simple camera that used a lightweight lm, which meant everyone could take photographs. Monet’s Rouen series were very well received…and ironically described by a contemporary as “like a snapshot”.

When painting the facade of the cathedral, apart from his earliest works there, Monet did not sit in the square outside but took space in a room above monsieur Levy’s dress shop opposite the gothic building, and a screen was placed between him and the ladies trying on their new outfits.

The shop is now the Rouen tourist office and from there you can see the view Monet painted, sometimes working on nine or 10 canvasses in the course of the changing light of the day.

Monet’s time in London, working on views of the thames and the Houses of Parliament that he never tired of, are also well-represented in the exhibition.

Again, keeping the theme of how Monet’s art reflected ever-changing society, most of the buildings he painted in London, with the exception of Waterloo Bridge, had been built in his lifetime. He also painted the dazzling electric lights of Leicester square in 1901 (a painting which can currently be seen in Tate Britain’s Impressionists In London show).

Monet’s Impressionism – the style of painting in the open-air rather than in a studio and showing the momentary effects of light on a subject – means that his work is as much about the light as the buildings he paints.

“I want the unobtainable,” he said. “Other artists paint a bridge, a house, a boat and that’s the end. They are finished. I want to paint the air which surrounds the bridge, the house, the boat; the beauty of the air in which these objects are located, and that is nothing short of impossible.”

On a visit to London in 1900 and 1901, he wrote to his second wife Alice about his efforts to paint the buildings of the city with the changing effects of light he desired.

“I’m going strong now, although it’s very difficult, for no one day is anything like another. Yesterday there was sun, with an exquisite mist and a splendid sunset; today, rain and fog, to the point where I am writing to you by (electric) light at four in the afternoon, whereas yesterday I was able to work in daylight until almost six o’clock.”

He’d panic when the weather wasn’t changeable enough. “When I got up, I was terrified to see there was no fog, not even a wisp of mist: I was prostrate, and could see all my paintings done for. But gradually the res were lit and the smoke and haze came back.”

The London smog proved picturesque. Monet wrote to Alice that he had up to 65 canvasses on the go and by 9am on the morning of February 3, 1901, had already been toiling on four separate works.

“There’s no more extraordinary country for a painter,” he said at the end of the letter.

However, as well as grand buildings, there are also less well-known structures in the National Gallery exhibition.

Monet and Camille moved to the village of Vétheuil in 1878, and he was immediately attracted to painting the 13th-century church, featuring it many times and making it one of the most recognisable buildings in his work.

There is a sadness to these images, too.

Camille died in the house in Vétheuil and her husband painted her on her death bed.

She is buried in a little cemetery close to the church her husband found so inspiring.

The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Monet And Architecture is at the National Gallery from April 9-July 29. More details at nationalgallery.org.uk/ 020 7747 2885

EU leader Jean Claude Juncker ‘status crushing’ as Brexit negotiations impact US UK trade https://briefnews.eu/eu-leader-jean-claude-juncker-status-crushing-as-brexit-negotiations-impact-us-uk-trade/ https://briefnews.eu/eu-leader-jean-claude-juncker-status-crushing-as-brexit-negotiations-impact-us-uk-trade/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 18:24:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eu-leader-jean-claude-juncker-status-crushing-as-brexit-negotiations-impact-us-uk-trade/

EU leader Jean Claude Juncker showed the ultimate display of power today, according to a body language expert who an analysed the behaviour of European leaders at the European Union Council summit in Brussels.

The 63-year-old Luxembourgish politician has been in the role since November 2014, and was previously the Prime Minister of Luxembourg.

The European Commission President had prime ministers kneeling at his feet as he spoke to them at the roundtable meeting between the EU’s leaders.

A body language expert has analysed the footage exclusively for Express.co.uk.

“It was ‘An audience with…’ time at the EU summit as leader Jean Claude Juncker appeared to hold court, sitting splayed and slumped in his seat, while various other world leaders came to bend the knee in what looked like an over-congruent act of obeisance,” Judi James said.

“When Macron refused to both shake hands with the EU leader earlier while he stood and Juncker remained in his seat it did look mightily like a snub from the French president,” Judi said.

“But one glance at the body language alternative shown by Mark Rutte and Charles Michel suggests Macron’s was a smart move to avoid the status-crushing experience of stooping right to the floor to be tucked beneath Juncker’s armpit while he jabs his index finger in a stabbing gesture like the man who is calling all of the shots.”

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel sat with Mr Juncker’s arm draped over him as the pair spoke on Friday morning.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was then seen kneeling at the feet of Mr Juncker as the Commission remains in his seat.

Jean Claude Juncker took stayed in his seat throughout these interactions, in a way Judi suggests is similar to a patriarch.

She said: “The overall effect is to suggest that Juncker is commanding shows of obedience from other EU leaders and making them perform submissive rituals as they do so.

“The best you could describe it as is paternal although it is an unusual ritual to do to high-ranking adults.”

Juncker, who is the man charged with negotiating a new deal with Britain after Brexit, recently claimed Britain would be better off if he was prime minister.

Mr Juncker said Theresa May had not briefed him on the Chequers meeting of her Brexit negotiations “war cabinet” when ministers agreed a broad policy for the next stage of negotiations, on trade.

He then quipped: “I am not the British prime minister. It would be good for Britain if I was, but I’m not.”

Judi added: “Juncker raised his hand with the palm held towards himself to appear to conduct and choreograph the action, performing some sharp nods to get his views across. At one point two people rise from their kneeling only to be motioned back onto the floor again, popping up then back down again in unison.

“Sitting and making others kneel like this is the ultimate power-posture in many ways unless the person sitting is unable to get out of their chair. Bending the knee is an ancient act of submission and obedience, with the kneeler performing an act of inconvenience to perform it.”

Oscar Winner Claude Lelouch is the Next Director to Join the Cellphone Movie Revolution https://briefnews.eu/oscar-winner-claude-lelouch-is-the-next-director-to-join-the-cellphone-movie-revolution/ https://briefnews.eu/oscar-winner-claude-lelouch-is-the-next-director-to-join-the-cellphone-movie-revolution/#respond Tue, 06 Mar 2018 13:35:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oscar-winner-claude-lelouch-is-the-next-director-to-join-the-cellphone-movie-revolution/ claude lelouch cellphone movie

Claude Lelouch is the latest director to turn to smartphones as the next step in cinema.

The Oscar-winning French director of the 1967 film A Man and a Woman will shoot a film entirely on his cellphone. But that’s not the only selling point. The Claude Lelouch cellphone movie will be a retelling of the recent theft of the director’s latest screenplay and 50 years worth of handwritten notes.

Lelouch had been studiously keeping handwritten notes for the past 50 years, shaping it into what he hoped would be his next film, titled Oui et Non (Yes and No). But in a blink of an eye, it was gone.

The robbery of Lelouch’s screenplay for his latest film happened only two months ago, but it inspired an even more ambitious project for the filmmaker: a movie shot entirely on his cellphone. Lelouch will shoot the film this summer. It’s titled La vertu de l’imponderable, which roughly translates to The Virtue of the Imponderable. According to Variety, Lelouch said he got the idea after the theft, which took place in early January as he was locking his car outside the Paris offices of his production company.

“I’ve tried to have a positive attitude,” Lelouch said at the International Monte Carlo Film Festival this week. The 80-year-old director mentioned that he wants to film the project using unprofessional actors, “a bit like [Vittorio de Sica’s] Bicycle Thieves.”

The screenplay for La vertu is being written by the director with his wife and regular writing partner, Valerie Perrin. It will be a low-budget film in the vein of other smartphone-shot projects, like The Florida Project director Sean Baker‘s acclaimed Tangerine. But it does lend an air of prestige to the burgeoning genre, especially in the wake of Steven Soderbergh gushing about the medium, which he called the “future” of filmmaking. Soderbergh has an upcoming iPhone-shot thriller called Unsane starring Claire Foy.

But Lelouch doesn’t plan to switch entirely to cellphone filmmaking. The director is still working on reconstructing his lost Oui et Non script, with the help of Perrin. The epic will follow two French families over the period of 1937 to the present, as they grapple with historical and cultural changes. He still plans to shoot Oui et Non in about a year and a half with “top French stars.”

“‘Yes’ and ‘No’ are the two words most used by humanity,” Lelouch said. “Each time you say them, this can change your life entirely….We don’t fully realize the power of ‘yes’ and ‘no.’”

The Apprentice final 2017: Karren and Claude defend Lord Sugar after viewer BACKLASH https://briefnews.eu/the-apprentice-final-2017-karren-and-claude-defend-lord-sugar-after-viewer-backlash/ https://briefnews.eu/the-apprentice-final-2017-karren-and-claude-defend-lord-sugar-after-viewer-backlash/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 23:28:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-apprentice-final-2017-karren-and-claude-defend-lord-sugar-after-viewer-backlash/

Businessman Sugar offered quarter of a million pounds investment to both finalists James White, 26, and Sarah Lynn, 35 but faced a backlash from loyal The Apprentice fans.

However, trusty aides Karren Brady and Claude Littner jumped to Sugar’s defence following the broadcast.

Speaking to Rhod Gilbert on The Apprentice: You’re Hired, the pair backed the overall decision.

Claude said: “Well, I didn’t have a hand in it exactly. I’m very, very pleased with the outcome. I think it’s brilliant.”

As Rhod teased that that Lord Sugar may be knocking on Karen’s door to help towards the other £250,000 investment, she laughed that the business supremo would be fine.

Karren laughed: “Oh no, I think he’s going to be fine on that front.

“You know what Alan loves? He loves investing in people. He loves investing in business. He believes so passionately in giving people a chance.

“He saw two young people and he thought he couldn’t tear himself between the two of them so he’s going to back them both – and good for him.”

It comes after the final was pushed back earlier tonight as the BBC’s Sports Personality Of The Year overran.

Hosted by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan, the show announced that Mo Farah was the overall winner.

However, The Apprentice final was pushed back by 15 minutes as the live show faced several technical and timing errors.

final is available to watch on the iPlayer now.

The Apprentice 2017 final: Claude Littner FORCED to shut down Elizabeth ‘It wasn't shown' https://briefnews.eu/the-apprentice-2017-final-claude-littner-forced-to-shut-down-elizabeth-it-wasnt-shown/ https://briefnews.eu/the-apprentice-2017-final-claude-littner-forced-to-shut-down-elizabeth-it-wasnt-shown/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 21:28:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-apprentice-2017-final-claude-littner-forced-to-shut-down-elizabeth-it-wasnt-shown/

The 68-year-old was chosen to be one of Lord Alan Sugar’s aides on the BBC series in 2015, following the candidates on various tasks alongside Karren Brady, 48.

While the CEO remains one of the business mogul’s most trusted aides, he revealed that he wasn’t always able to fulfil his role as a mere “observer” on the show in its latest season.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Claude shared: “I always maintain my neutrality, yet on this particular occasion, it wasn’t actually shown on TV, but I just couldn’t stand it anymore.

“It was on the doggy day task, Elizabeth and Joanna were together and what was happening was Joanna was putting out these doggy products and as Joanna was putting them out and taking them out of the box, Elizabeth was picking them up and putting them back in another box.

“I just couldn’t bear it anymore. I said, ‘Elizabeth stop doing that,’ and of course that wasn’t the right thing to do at all.”

The businessman went on to say that the 39-year-old florist’s behaviour was incredibly difficult to witness, especially at that advanced stage in the competition.

“I just couldn’t, it was beyond frustrating when you got to that sort of stage,” he explained. “I just couldn’t prevent myself from doing it, but generally speaking my role is simply to be an observer, to note everything down, to report back to Alan Sugar and not to get involved.”

Speaking about the controversial candidate’s portrayal on this year’s series, Claude also confessed: “I don’t think you can put that kind of thing on. She’s very very true to herself, she’s got a very very strong work ethic, there’s no doubt about that, and she’s absolutely passionate and gives 100 per cent effort to every single task.

“But by the same token she’s completely misguided, she’s impossible to work with, she’s very very annoying.

“Ultimately, she’s quite endearing because she’s in her own world and doesn’t really appreciate that this is a task where you need to work with people, you can’t lead them, and she often led them into the wrong area.”

Though, Claude stressed that some tasks would “not” have been achieved if it hadn’t been for her commitment to the cause.

The Apprentice final airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One.

Theresa May and Jean Claude Juncker in Brexit talks – what did their body language reveal? https://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-and-jean-claude-juncker-in-brexit-talks-what-did-their-body-language-reveal/ https://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-and-jean-claude-juncker-in-brexit-talks-what-did-their-body-language-reveal/#respond Mon, 04 Dec 2017 16:18:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-and-jean-claude-juncker-in-brexit-talks-what-did-their-body-language-reveal/

British Prime Minister Theresa May and Jean Claude Juncker met today to talk Brexit and forge a deal between the UK and the EU.

Mrs May, 61, met with Mr Juncker, 62, in Brussels to seal the terms of Briton’s divorce from the EU.

Brexiteer Nigel Farage has slammed the Prime Minister when it comes to Theresa May’s Brexit deal, calling her actions a betrayal.

A leaked draft has appeared to show that Theresa May’s Northern Ireland Brexit deal may include no divergence of the single market and customs union rules on the island of Ireland – including the Northern Irish territory.

So, what does Theresa May and Jean Claude Junker’s body language show at today’s historic talks? A body language expert gave her professional opinion.

Theresa May Brexit body language – what does it show?

According to body language expert Judi James, Juncker has been especially cold towards the British Prime Minister, potentially not a good sign for the Brexit negotiations going forwards.

Judi said: “There’s a contagious awkwardness about these poses, especially from Juncker who is normally a fan of the warmest and most tactile of greetings, no matter who he’s meeting.

“He’s created an exaggerated spatial gap from May, as though he’d be happier keeping her at arm’s length.”

There are no signs of friendliness from the President of the European Commission, Judi explained, adding: “Even when the pair use eye contact there seems to be no attempt at closeness from Juncker, who only reverts to his signature style as they go to walk off, when he places an arm around May’s back.

“This would normally signal a parental-type of warmth but his hand is normally around shoulder height. Holding it lower here makes the gesture look more like a steer, hurry or even shove.”

Juncker means business, according to the body language expert, shown by his dominant display in his feet.

Judi said: “It is Juncker’s foot splay that suggests he still means business though.

“His foot stance hints he could still be holding firm despite the diminished power signals from the rest of his pose.”

However, Mrs May is fighting back. Judi said: “Interestingly May’s foot splay matches his evenly, showing mirrored confidence and resolve.”

Mrs May is the one making all the effort to be friendly in this exchange, the expert claims.

Judi said: “It is May working this pose to appear friendly but also dominant here.

“Given the gap between their bodies she has pulled Juncker’s hand towards her own torso in the shake in a gesture that shows she’s leading the choreography, and her fingers look as though she has his hand in a tight grasp.

“Juncker’s newly-fastidious distance-greeting combined with May’s determination to take control suggest this should make for an interesting meeting.”

Theresa May’s body language can reveal much to the British press about how the PM might be feeling during these Brexit negotiations.

Judi also gave her analysis on Mrs May as she arrived at the EU Summit on November 17.

Strictly Come Dancing 2017: The Apprentice’s Claude Littner turned DOWN offer – here’s why https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-the-apprentices-claude-littner-turned-down-offer-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-the-apprentices-claude-littner-turned-down-offer-heres-why/#respond Wed, 04 Oct 2017 17:55:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-the-apprentices-claude-littner-turned-down-offer-heres-why/

The businessman, who became a permanent fixture in the boardroom two years ago, has today revealed that he was asked to take part in Strictly Come Dancing.

However, the brutal interviewer disappointed fans up and down the country by admitting that he won’t be doing the reality show, or any other for that matter.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine, Claude commented: “Strictly Come Dancing, they have asked me, but I cannot dance. I’d rather not make a fool of myself.”

The 68-year-old then went on to list the other programmes he had no interest in doing, after rising to fame for the tough time he gave wannabes on The Apprentice.

Claude went on: “MasterChef, I cannot cook. Mastermind I don’t actually know anything. I think all these things should be avoided. I think it’s a good principle to stick to what you’re good at.”

However, while he won’t be strutting his stuff on the dance floor, fans will be able to enjoy his undoubtedly cruel put-downs when The Apprentice begins again tonight.

Meanwhile, his co-star Lord Sugar has said women can narrow the gender pay gap by insisting they want to be paid more.

The 70-year-old said he thinks it is “disgraceful” the BBC was forced to publish the earnings of its top talent earlier this year.

“I don’t think transparency over pay is the correct thing. It’s a private issue and I think it’s disgraceful, actually, that the BBC were forced to publish what people were earning,” he said.

The 13th series of The Apprentice begins on BBC One tonight at 9pm.

Van Dijk has established himself as one of the Premier League‘s best defenders since arriving at the St Mary’s in 2015 from Celtic.

And he is one of the most wanted players ahead of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal are all interested in the Holland international, who is currently out injured.

But when Puel was asked whether Van Dijk would still be at the club next seaosn, the Saints boss was adamant he would be.

He said: “Yes. He’s our captain.

“We know he is important for us. He has maturity and leadership in the team.

“He is important, he’s a fantastic player we know. He’s important for us now.

“Of course we wait until the beginning of the season to see him on the pitch.

“He has a long contract and I think the day he returns we will want to keep him.”

Ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Arsenal, Puel confirmed Van Dijk will miss the rest of the season.

“It was a bad injury. But now it’s okay,” said Puel.

“The surgery is finished, he can work normally, he can start the gym work and rehab to come back for next season… and with us.”

understands Chelsea first sought to sign Van Dijk in the January transfer window.

But the player’s injury and Jose Fonte’s sale to West Ham meant neither Saints nor Chelsea were inclined to sell.

Last month the Daily Star reported that Van Dijk would cost fellow suitors Arsenal and Manchester City £50million to prise away from St Mary’s.

It is claimed the Dutchman’s representatives have been in contact with officials from the Emirates and Etihad.

Jurgen Klopp is thought to be a big admirer of the centre-half, with the Liverpool boss keen to add to his defence this summer.

Top of Klopp’s priority list is a new left-back but he is also targeting a centre-back as Mamadou Sakho seeks to depart Anfield for good.

In his first public statements since being dismissed on Tuesday, former Montreal Canadiens coach Michel Therrien made it clear he wants the franchise to succeed under new bench boss Claude Julien.

“I would first like to thank the Montreal Canadiens organization, especially [owner] Geoff Molson and [general manager] Marc Bergevin, for the experience of five remarkable years,” Therrien said through a press release on Thursday.

“I leave with my head held high,” he said. “I am very proud of the work accomplished over the past five years. The current team can aspire to great honours, and I wish my colleague Claude Julien every success in the future.”

Under Therrien, the Canadiens opened the season with a 13-1-1 mark but have been listless over the last two months and have a 2-6-1 record in their last nine games. There was fear of another collapse like last season, when the club went from first place to out of the playoffs after star goalie Carey Price was injured.

Julien, 56, returns for his second stint as Montreal’s head coach. He also took over after Therrien was fired for the first time in January 2003. Julien, who guided the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup title in 2011, was fired by the team on Feb. 7.

Therrien said he harbours no ill will for be being let go by the franchise, and acknowledges the pressure that goes with coaching a prestigious hockey club.

“The Montreal Canadiens have always been a great organization, and recent events in no way change my perception of the team and its management,” said Therrien.

“Being an NHL coach is a tough job: it is gratifying on many levels but it can also quickly become a thankless task. When a team is experiencing difficulties, any head coach knows his job is on the line. I understand and accept this reality. I would like to thank fans in Montreal and across Quebec, as well as members of the media. I also salute the coaches and staff I have worked with over the years and, above all, the many players whom I had the privilege of coaching.”
