One US high school student’s red ‘Make America Great Again’ hat triggered his teacher into calling the kid an “a**hole” and evacuating the classroom.

In a video filmed by his classmate, the kid’s teacher gives him a telling off for the hat, saying that other students are “provoked by the presence” of it.

“If you’re scared of a hat, that’s no different than being scared of the dark in a basement,” the high schooler shoots back, slouching in his chair.

“Take your hat off or get out,” the teacher demands. “I’m either going to gather everybody up and go to another classroom, and you can remain here like an a**hole, or you can take your hat off.”

“I can’t sit here and learn?” the student asks. “What about freedom of expression?”

“I don’t care,” the triggered teacher responds, before evacuating the entire class into another room. Earlier in the video the teacher explains that he normally makes exceptions to the school’s ‘no hats’ policy, but would not this time.

The rebellious Republican isn’t the only high schooler to catch stick for wearing a MAGA hat, and a series of incidents show the hat can be a hazardous wardrobe choice. A high school senior in California was arrested in August for grabbing a classmate’s MAGA hat, then slapping her teacher as he escorted her out of the classroom.

The hat, she said, was a “racist and hateful symbol,” and her tirade against its owner a “political statement.”

  • A Pennsylvania school district equipped each classroom with rocks in case of active shooters.
  • The superintendent said it’s meant to be a “last-ditch response to an armed intruder.”
  • Schools have been floating various school-safety measures in the wake of last month’s high-school shooting in Florida.

As school districts across the country debate the merits of arming teachers or installing metal detectors to prevent active shooters, one Pennsylvania district has apparently equipped each of its classrooms with five-gallon buckets of river stones, instead.

Blue Mountain School District superintendent David Helsel testified before the state’s House Education Committee on March 15 and informed lawmakers of his district’s solution to active shooters.

Paddington classroom screening contained 'pornographic' images: School issues statement https://briefnews.eu/paddington-classroom-screening-contained-pornographic-images-school-issues-statement/ https://briefnews.eu/paddington-classroom-screening-contained-pornographic-images-school-issues-statement/#respond Sat, 03 Feb 2018 06:59:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paddington-classroom-screening-contained-pornographic-images-school-issues-statement/

Poor old Paddington is being linked to sex. Again.

The cuddly bear from Peru is not usually associated with X-rated shenanigans, but already caused major uproar when the original movie was released in 2016 and given a higher rating than expected due to “mild sex references.”

This time the references are not so mild after an unsuspecting classroom of children was accidentally shown “a deeply inappropriate pornographic pop up image” during a school treat.

The Walsall school swiftly issued a public statement.

The statement said: ” Croft Academy is a one form entry school in Walsall and part of the Elliot Foundation Academies Trust. On Friday 26th January a member of staff was attempting to show an extract from the movie Paddington to children in year 5 when a deeply inappropriate pornographic pop up image appeared on the screen.

“The member of staff concerned immediately closed the pop up window and reported the incident to the school Principal, Mark Davis. The Principal, following the academy’s procedures, informed the Local Authority Designated Officer, parents of the children affected, the academy trust and the school’s IT service provider.

The school has web content filtering software designed to stop incidents such as this and at present it is unclear why it failed to work on this occasion.”

Radio host Toby Tarrant wittily tweeted: “A school in Walsall has apologised after accidentally showing its kids porn instead of Paddington Bear. Easy mistake to make, they both feature a hairy guy from Peru who’s not wearing any pants.”

Ironically, the first Paddington movie receieved a PG rating partly due to a famous scene where star Hugh Bonneville isn’t waering pants, bu rather a woman’s dress.

He said at the time: “I think the rating is perfectly appropriate. I think it’s slightly odd to talk about sexual references which actually refers to me dressed as a cleaning lady, which is frightening maybe, but not entirely sexual.”

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) issued the following warning for parents: “Parents should consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.”

The film was been given a PG rating, rather than the expected Universal rating, due to scenes of “dangerous behaviour, mild threat, mild sex references and mild bad language,” which, “may be unsuitable for young children.”

Lenovo’s VR Classroom kits come with Daydream headsets https://briefnews.eu/lenovos-vr-classroom-kits-come-with-daydream-headsets/ https://briefnews.eu/lenovos-vr-classroom-kits-come-with-daydream-headsets/#respond Sat, 27 Jan 2018 01:08:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lenovos-vr-classroom-kits-come-with-daydream-headsets/

Lenovo will soon release its VR Classroom setup, which will let teachers guide their students through virtual field trips. Each kit comes with the first standalone Daydream VR headset, Lenovo’s Mirage Solo with Daydream, which arrives preloaded with over 700 Google Expeditions VR field trips as well as three exclusive Jane Goodall “Wild Immersion” videos. The VR field trips allow classrooms to explore the world and in order to help facilitate the learning experience, the videos include stopping points during which teachers can add more information or answer questions as well as talking points for teachers. Additionally, online lesson plans will be available to assist teachers in getting the most from the kit.

Along with headsets and software, the kit comes with a Lenovo Tab 4 PLUS 10-inch tablet, a Ruckus R510 commercial router, a cart or case depending on the size of the kit being purchased, training videos, expert consultation and monthly webinars.

Google Expeditions got started in 2015 as a limited-release learning platform, and it saw a wide release the following year. Last year, Google debuted a solo mode that made it easier for people to experience Expeditions outside of a classroom setting.

Lenovo’s VR Classroom will be available this April in the US and the fall for Canada. There are three kit tiers — a three-student pack, a 10-student pack and a 24-student pack — with the lowest tier starting at $ 2,899.

Canadian teachers wearing Kevlar vests as classroom violence soars https://briefnews.eu/canadian-teachers-wearing-kevlar-vests-as-classroom-violence-soars/ https://briefnews.eu/canadian-teachers-wearing-kevlar-vests-as-classroom-violence-soars/#respond Thu, 25 Jan 2018 11:05:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadian-teachers-wearing-kevlar-vests-as-classroom-violence-soars/

Elementary school teachers in Waterloo, Ontario are resorting to wearing Kevlar vests to protect themselves from their students.

The unusual move is in response to rising classroom violence from pupils and not based on a fear of being shot. Teachers are donning protective gear made from Kevlar, a material used in body armour, which includes vests and leg sleeves.

“We’re [dealing with] everything … biting to kicking and punching,” Jeff Pelich, vice president of a chapter of Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario told CBC. “Between our teachers and educational assistants, and child and youth workers, many of them are now required to wear Kevlar, to wear full vests to protect themselves from punches and kicks.”

There were around 1,300 incidents of student-on-teacher violence in elementary schools in the Waterloo Region District School Board last year, an increase of about 400 from the previous year.

Teachers have been complaining about rising incidents with students for a while now, with many pointing to a lack of funding as a reason for the issue.

According to the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, 70 per cent of its members have experienced or witnessed violence in their jobs. Some 77 percent said the school’s actions to prevent a recurrence was not effective.

According to Pelich, the gear is usually worn by teachers working in classes with students with special needs. He said that the violent incidents aren’t limited to children in special education, and that the increase in incidents is as a result of a lack of resources and funding.

“We’ve been advocating for years. It’s not fair for our children with special needs not to be able to get the right supports inside of the classrooms, and that has been the biggest issue that we’ve had,” Angela Pugliese, a mother of an autistic boy, told Global News last year. “I’d like to see [teachers and educational assistants] know how to handle it — how to handle an outburst, how to handle meltdowns — and I’m finding they’re not trained enough to do it.”

Pelich is calling on the Ontario government to increase funding, citing the fact that students in secondary education receive more funding per child than in elementary school.

“Our government is working tirelessly with our partners to strengthen and create a culture of health and safety in our schools,” Ontario’s Education Minister Indira Naidoo-Harris told Global News, adding it would spend CA$ 220,000,000 ($ 179,000,000) this year to hire over 2,400 teachers and education assistants.

Two 8yo children killed, many injured after car plows into classroom in Australia https://briefnews.eu/two-8yo-children-killed-many-injured-after-car-plows-into-classroom-in-australia/ https://briefnews.eu/two-8yo-children-killed-many-injured-after-car-plows-into-classroom-in-australia/#respond Tue, 07 Nov 2017 04:10:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/two-8yo-children-killed-many-injured-after-car-plows-into-classroom-in-australia/

At least two young children have been killed and scores injured after a 52-year-old woman crashed her Toyota Kluger into a primary school in southwest Sydney.

Two eight-year-old boys were rushed to a hospital in critical condition but died from cardiac arrest after the sports utility vehicle smashed through the wooden wall of Banksia Road Primary School, police confirmed. Three other pupils, all girls aged eight and nine, were also brought to the hospital with injuries. They remain in serious or stable condition.

Another 16 children and their teacher were treated on the spot for minor injuries. Police said there were 24 primary-age children in the class when the collision happened on Tuesday morning.

Footage from the scene showed the Toyota completely inside the classroom after it smashed through its wooden wall.

“Obviously, it was a scene of carnage,” New South Wales Ambulance Superintendent Stephanie Radnidge told reporters outside the school.

Authorities have detained the driver, who was uninjured in the crash, and have taken her to the hospital to conduct blood and urine tests. The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while either exiting the school grounds or trying to park the Toyota.

“We have a 52-year-old local woman who is with police at this time. She’s cooperating with blood and urine testing and the processes that accompany that investigation,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith told reporters. “We’re not looking this as an intentional act. It is a crash investigation.”

Trump has sent America to the back of the classroom https://briefnews.eu/trump-has-sent-america-to-the-back-of-the-classroom/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-has-sent-america-to-the-back-of-the-classroom/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2017 04:32:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-has-sent-america-to-the-back-of-the-classroom/ Donald TrumpAP Photo/Michael Sohn

“How will America help fix this?”

During our time in the Obama administration, this was a common refrain, one we heard over and over from our foreign counterparts about global problems.

They saw the United States as the leader on a broad range of issues — from combating terrorism to combating climate change — not just because of its tremendous economic and military strength (though that certainly helped).

They believed in American “soft power” — the ability to set the agenda, bring others to the table, draw up a game plan, and take the lead in implementing that plan. In a world of unrelenting challenges, this expectation can be exhausting, and it can often seem like a burden.

But the fact that so many countries look to the United States to provide the answers should be viewed as a blessing — it is what makes America exceptional.

Many things contribute to America’s global influence: its history of forming global coalitions, its government policies that set the tone, its “can-do” spirit, the power of U.S. example on issues like human rights, and, yes, its raw military and economic might. But America’s sway in the world also hinges on the culture of U.S. foreign policy that is propagated — and embodied — by the sitting president.

Most presidents understand this intuitively. “A platoon leader doesn’t get his platoon to go that way by getting up and saying, ‘I am smarter, I am bigger, I am stronger, I am the leader,’” President Dwight Eisenhower said in 1954. “He gets men to go with him because they want to do it for him, because they believe in him.”

For decades, American presidents of both parties have sought to enhance this pull of attraction by the policies they promote as well as how they act in office. They have understood that this is much more than being charitable or well liked. It is about commanding respect, maintaining other countries’ faith in U.S. institutions and values, and inspiring others to take action. It is also about coming to the table with ideas and getting things done.

This is never easy.

Whether Republican or Democrat, presidents often struggle with getting others to believe in them and follow along. President George W. Bush was often derided as a callow cowboy, and President Barack Obama was seen as too aloof. Yet each was able to operate within the broad consensus that has embodied U.S. foreign policy for decades.

But President Donald Trump is something altogether different. Because he prides himself on breaking with tradition and doing things his own way, he risks tearing down the culture of U.S. foreign policy. This is one of the reasons many Republican national security professionals are uncomfortable working for him.

A woman holds an American flag as she watches the voting results at Democratic presidential nominee former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's election night event at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center November 9, 2016 in New York City. Clinton is running against Republican nominee, Donald J. Trump to be the 45th President of the United States. As a president, Trump leads by insult, intimidation, bluster, and boast. His policies are deeply troubling in many areas, whether it is pulling out of international agreements, threatening trade wars, or slashing the budget for diplomacy or development.

Though some of his chief advisors—the so-called adults like Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson — are more technocrats than ideologues, they are working on many issues (such as Taiwan, Middle East peace, and NATO) to bring Trump’s policies into the mainstream. But what they can’t fix is Trump’s leadership style and the cultural shift it represents — here in the United States as well as abroad.

For America’s global partners, especially in Europe, Trump is wholly different from any U.S. president they have encountered. He is instinctually more autocratic than democratic, so it’s not surprising that he’s more at ease with monarchs and autocrats, as they are with him. Massive gilded palaces, family courtiers, oligarchic friends, and rule by decree make up the environment in which he is more comfortable, and fawning crowds and a pliant press are what’s desirable.

Trump’s behavior is less confounding if he’s seen not as a leader who aims to succeed in a democratic system of government and steer the free world, but as someone who is more familiar with the norms of autocracy. By considering him in the mold of strongman — more Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe than U.S. President James Madison — his choices make more sense.

The result is a profound shift in the culture of U.S. foreign-policy leadership, in which traditional democratic allies see the president not as a problem-solver but more as a challenge to be managed or worked around. At the same time, U.S. foreign policy under Trump is more recognizable to illiberal leaders in China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. It’s no wonder that they are confident in improved relations, because in Trump they see someone like themselves.

Irrespective of how they view the Trump presidency, many foreign leaders are wondering if he will get things done.

When all eyes turn to him at the next international summit or emergency session in the wake of some tragedy, will he be able to restore faith in America’s capacity to lead and compel others to follow? Trump certainly thinks so. Yet based on how few of his campaign promises he’s delivered on in the first six months of his presidency (no Muslim ban, no health care bill, no tax reform, no moving of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem), many have their doubts.

To be sure, the United States remains too powerful to ignore, and there will still be many policies where close cooperation will thrive. But as leaders grapple with the reality of Trump, they expect a U.S. president who will be more contentious and distracted while less reliable and predictable. (That’s why leaders in Germany and Canada are openly questioning whether the United States still has their back, and why Asian partners are trying to revive the Trans-Pacific Partnership without the United States.)

Worse, instead of being admired, Trump is becoming a laughingstock, mocked by leaders from Australia to France. With allies disillusioned, America is diminished.

Already, fewer leaders are asking what America will do to fix global security problems. So we’re left with the simple fact that in Trump’s effort to make America great, he has made it less exceptional. Trump’s base might rejoice in pulling inward and disrupting the culture of the presidency, but as he has already started to witness firsthand, the world isn’t rejoicing.

Damaging America’s image of leadership will have lasting consequences for our security.

Google Classroom makes it easier than ever to teach and learn https://briefnews.eu/google-classroom-makes-it-easier-than-ever-to-teach-and-learn/ https://briefnews.eu/google-classroom-makes-it-easier-than-ever-to-teach-and-learn/#respond Fri, 28 Apr 2017 09:34:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-classroom-makes-it-easier-than-ever-to-teach-and-learn/ Whether you’re a natural-born educator or a learner with a thirst for knowledge, Google wants you to know that its Classroom software is now open to one and all.

A month after the web giant opened the platform to learners with nothing more than a Google account, the company said on Thursday it’s extending the same availability to anyone that wants to teach, too. Up until now, Classroom was only available to teachers working at an educational organization who signed up via Google’s G Suite for Education service.

For those not in the know, Google Classroom is an education-focused tool that helps educators set up and manage classes. It incorporates Google’s own collection of online software, including Gmail, Docs, Calendar, and Hangouts.

Students using the system can view their assignments on Classroom’s Work page, in the class stream, or on the class calendar, and also use it to submit completed work. All class materials are automatically filed into Google Drive folders.

Notably, the platform recently started to incorporate various intelligent features to improve the efficiency of the system for teachers.

Google said this week that it’s been trialing the new, open-to-all format over the last few weeks, with teachers creating “some great new classes for adult education, hobbies, and after-school programs.”

In a post announcing the change, Google highlighted the work of educator Tony Vincent to demonstrate how the management tool can now be used. The Iowa resident tweeted out an invitation at the end of last month to gauge interest in his free online course teaching graphic design. After receiving positive responses from people around the world, he quickly filled all 75 places for his six-week class, which kicked off at the start of April.

Explaining why the system was an improvement on, say, simply posting an instructional piece on YouTube, Vincent said, “I didn’t want to just publish a video tutorial and never see the end results.” He added that when he heard Google Classroom was open for personal accounts, he thought it’d be a great chance to gather a group of like-minded folks to “learn, create, and share.”

If you fancy creating and giving lessons and are looking for an easy way to manage the process, Classroom is an option worth checking out. And all you need to do it is a Google account.

An apparent murder-suicide shooting at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino, California, also killed an 8 year-old boy, multiple outlets report.

Initially one female teacher and a male suspect were found dead, and two students had been airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition, before one of the students succumbed to his wounds.

The police did not engage the shooter, who appeared to have killed himself, the local news affiliate CBS Los Angeles reported.

“We believe this to be a murder-suicide,” San Bernardino Chief of Police Jarrod Burguan said on Twitter, adding that the shooting appeared to have happened in a classroom.

“Police operations are continuing to secure the area. However, we do believe the threat is down,” Burguan said in a separate tweet. The children have been transferred away from the site.

Multiple sources have pointed to domestic violence as the possible motive for the shooting.

A nearby California state university has ordered a shelter-in-place, and firefighters have created a triage area to access and treat the wounded, NBC LA reported.

Parents of students can reunite with their children with a photo ID nearby at Cajon High School.

North Park Elementary School was founded in 1968 and teaches kids from kindergarten to sixth grade.

HTC targets the classroom with 10-headset Vive bundle https://briefnews.eu/htc-targets-the-classroom-with-10-headset-vive-bundle/ https://briefnews.eu/htc-targets-the-classroom-with-10-headset-vive-bundle/#respond Wed, 29 Mar 2017 10:02:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/htc-targets-the-classroom-with-10-headset-vive-bundle/

The folks over at HTC Vive have been talking up the potential of VR in education since day one, and this year, they’re hoping to make a bigger push into this space by focusing on multi-user scenarios. At this week’s Vive Ecosystem Conference in Shenzhen, the company announced the Vive Group Edition bundle for China, which includes ten Business Edition headsets plus two Business Edition base stations for 49,999 yuan or about $ 7,260, and it’s due to ship in May. This offers a much lower entry barrier for commercial users, as it’s almost a 40-percent saving when compared to buying ten full Business Edition kits, meaning schools and small businesses are more likely to afford the system.

For those who are wondering, yes, the Group Edition package is missing the controllers plus extra base stations, and for a good reason. According to the company, the idea here stemmed from a growing number of customer requests for high-end multi-user VR solutions, but that quickly becomes costly as each headset needs to be hooked up to a relatively powerful PC. As such, the only way to lower the cost without too much compromise is by sticking to the bare necessities on the VR side: a number of headsets and just two base stations per room.

While the lack of controllers here may sound worrying, HTC Vive’s China President Alvin Wang Graylin assured me that the lean kit is perfectly suitable for light interaction use cases. These can be as simple as watching a video together (so cinemas can also take advantage of this package) to something more fun like going on virtual tours — be it a seated experience or a room-scale experience. I can imagine students enjoying geography, biology and history lessons more by being virtually transported to different places, and they’ll also get a better sense of scale by walking around an animated solar system; these can all get by without controllers, and Graylin added that there are plenty more of such education VR apps in the works.

But of course, customers can always add controllers to their Group Edition orders should their budget allow. This then opens up more opportunities in the classroom. During the conference earlier today, HTC showed off a chemistry lesson app which let teachers and students do virtual experiments together using controllers. It may take the fun out of seeing real chemicals fizzing or burning away, but this way the class gets to simulate the more dangerous experiments with no actual risks.

Another somewhat educational app that caught my attention during the conference — and I know I’m late to this one — was Night Cafe: A VR Tribute to Vincent Van Gogh (available on Steam), which lets you explore a tranquil world rendered in the style of Van Gogh’s painting, and you even get to meet the man himself. Had this technology been available earlier, I might have paid more attention in my art lessons back then.

Graylin also addressed some concerns regarding whether VR is bad for children’s eyes. Earlier this year, his company partnered with the Beijing Institute of Technology to study a group of young subjects aged 9 to 12. First, the children each wore a VR headset (presumably a Vive) for 20 minutes, and the result was that 8 percent of them reportedly had worse vision afterwards. But in a second test involving the use of tablets instead of VR headsets, the percentage of subjects with worsened vision went up to 11.5 percent.

What’s more interesting is that in the VR test, 20 percent of the subjects actually had improved vision, which was notably higher than the mere 7.7 percent in the tablet test. So in short, VR usage appears to be more beneficial — or at least less harmful — to children’s eyes than using tablets, but we should take this claim with a grain of salt until more studies come to the same conclusion. Having said that, there are already existing apps that use VR to help restore vision, namely Vivid Vision (formerly Diplopia).

It’s obviously a bit early to tell whether the Vive Group Edition bundle has the right formula, but Graylin has already set an aggressive target for the education sector in China. Currently, there are “dozens” of local schools that have partnered with HTC Vive, and the exec hopes to turn this figure “into hundreds or even thousands” by the end of this year. If all goes well, here’s hoping other markets will also be offered a similar package to increase VR adoption.
