The latest incident occurred early in Friday night’s clash with Carlton, after the star Swan was pinged for a free kick for blocking.

“You’ve got your arms around him and you’re preventing him from leading,” the umpire said to Rampe after making the decision.

Clearly not happy, Rampe bit back by saying, “Clarko would be happy with that. Well done. Did you have a coffee with him too?”

The AFL CEO and Hawthorn coach caught up for coffee in May to talk about how defenders were playing on forwards.

In commentary for Fox Footy last week, Collingwood president Eddie McGuire had this to say after a blocking free kick was paid against Jack Riewoldt.

“I don’t think it (the free kick) was there at all,” he said.

“They are red hot on blocking at the moment. Alastair Clarkson (is) showing that he does run the AFL. You have a cup of tea with Gillon McLachlan and you can change the entire rules.”

Following his side’s loss to Hawthorn last month, Clarkson was very vocal in his comments about how the Swans had defended his forwards.

In the aftermath of the loss, he said the Swans had gotten away with “blue murder”.

He went on to elaborate on those comments in the coming days when he said Sydney’s well-drilled defence and a shift in the interpretation of the blocking rule for killing off key forwards.

“I watch a game last week where Dane Rampe’s playing on Ben Brown … there’s only one way that he can actually defend in that manner, he’s not actually defending the ball, he’s defending the body,” Clarkson told 3AW.

“It’s a very sophisticated defence, it’s very disciplined, it’s very well coached and it’s very adhered to by the Sydney defenders, but in my view their defenders aren’t actually defending the ball, they’re defending the body.

“That’s why young kids like McCartin and Schache and Boyd and Hipwood, they wonder why they play such great footy at Under-18 level and then can’t get a kick at senior level, well in under-18 they don’t defend the body, the defend the ball.

“I think if we got back to defending the ball, in a manner that it should be, then we’d get back to getting some contested marks … we’re just not seeing that aspect of our play anymore so what are teams doing? Well, what’s the point of having a key forward anymore? Let’s just play little fellas down there, try to compete, bring it to ground.”

Newly installed president Jeff Kennett has endorsed Clarkson’s continuation in the role he had taken over in 2005 after Peter Schwab’s departure.

But the four-time premiership coach will wait until the middle of next year when he will have greater clarity about his passion to coach the team into a 16th season and beyond.

“I welcome the endorsement from (Jeff) that he thinks I’m the person to lead the club, but I think we have to move with baby steps over the next 12 months to two years,” Clarkson told the AFL’s website.

“The next 12 months to two years is pivotal to see whether I’ve still got the passion and desire to drive this group and whether the new group of players coming through is going to respond to that coaching.

“I think we need to take every bit of the next two years as a club to decide where we want to go and what we want to do.”

The Hawks have endured an uncharacteristically unsettled period of late.

Short-lived chief executive Tracey Gaudry, president Richard Garvey and on-field stalwarts Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis are among the senior figures to have departed in the past year or so.

The return of Kennett, despite the at-times tense nature of his relationship with Clarkson, is a huge boost to the club’s off-field stability.

Clarkson has always been adamant he would leave the club better off than he found it and getting the timing of his departure right was key to his thinking on that front.

“If I feel that, for whatever reason, the message isn’t getting through, I’ve had an enormous opportunity to coach this club and, as has been the case with all those who have served our club, I’ll pass the baton,” he said.

“Will that be after my 15th year, or will I continue longer? That’s a discussion we will share together rather than one of us having the whip hand.

“That’s what makes it unique and pleasing because we can sit down and have those chats about what’s best for the footy club.”

Former Tiger Vickery joined the Hawks as a free agent ahead of the 2017 season, accepting a two-year offer worth around $ 1 million.

However the ruck-forward’s first season at the Hawks wasn’t a smooth one, playing just six AFL games and missing Box Hill’s preliminary final against Richmond due to suspension.

He was also arrested — then released without charge — over an investigation into extortion and threats allegedly relating to his restaurant.

Despite Vickery’s rocky 2017 campaign, Clarkson, who conducted an exit interview with Vickery on Monday, said the Hawks aren’t looking to trade him.

“We discussed both our disappointment and his disappointment in terms of his year. It hasn’t panned out for either us or him anywhere near as much as what we’d like,” Clarkson told Channel 9’s Footy Classified.

“He is still contracted and whilst a guy is contracted at your footy club and we feel like he has something he can contribute, then he’ll remain.

“I don’t think it does him any good or us. I don’t like the idea of someone coming into a footy club (and leaving).”

Clarkson said the foundation of Vickery’s exit meeting was not meeting the standards he or the club expected and the boxes he needed to tick during the summer.

“There’s a whole heap of reasons, including what implicated his life for a while in terms of his restaurant and what was going on in that regard, that had him not in the best space to play his best football,” Clarkson said.

“To make a judgment on one bloke in 12 months and then tip him out — if he wasn’t playing for Hawthorn, it would be on the basis he feels like he has nothing to contribute to us to help take us forward. It will be really on the basis of Ty, not the Hawthorn footy club.”

Clarkson added that the club might be interested in out-of-favour Bulldog Jake Stringer — “he would be really handy for our football club” — but said it would be difficult to see how a deal with the Dogs could be done after the Hawks were so active in last year’s trade period.

With potential coaching movement looming throughout this season, Clarkson was asked whether Collingwood and Gold Coast had unofficially approached his management.

“I think the best way to answer that is inquiries are made every career — they have been for the last six years,” Clarkson responded.

“The inquiries never go anywhere because they more or less just ask the question because if it ended up that I was to go somewhere else then they say ‘gee, I am disappointed that I didn’t ask the question’, so they will ask the question. I’d expect that of our players, who have had success over more recent times, and I would expect that of our coaches and Andrew Russell, Graham Wright and Chris Fagan.”

Clarkson said he never seriously entertained any offers.

“People ask me ‘you must be excited to be involved in success and then disappointed that you have dropped down’ — but that is the challenge of league footy,” he said.

“I am just excited about the challenge now of trying to work out how we can win our next premiership, as I were when we were seriously challenging and trying to run around the MCG in the last week in September.”

Clarkson added that he wasn’t sure whether he had aspirations to be involved with another AFL club, but that there was a mini desire to join an overseas club with another spot and see whether he could impart his AFL skills and knowledge there.

“There is an end date for everyone and it will come to me at some point in time. But given my attitude right at the present time, I would rather be pushed than walk,” Clarkson said.

“I think that there is some unfinished business. Part of it is we had a really decorated patch in our footy club’s history. Can we reinvigorate our group and recalibrate and go again?

“Whilst that’s still real for us, then I want to be hanging around.

“Just like I spoke openly to the club earlier in the year, if I or the club don’t feel it is working for us, don’t worry about having a discussion or finding it difficult to have a discussion with me. I have been there for a long period of time, I have enjoyed my time there, we set the club on the right path again.”

Clarkson and his Hawks are on the sidelines this September — the first time they have missed the finals since 2009.

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson will use the second half of the club’s worst season in more than a decade to foster its next generation of stars.

After Gold Coast all but shut the finals door for the Hawks, leaving them 4-8 leading into the bye week, Clarkson said he would use the example of the club’s quick rebounds over the past 50 years as inspiration for the task ahead.

Part of that rests with a number of his “no-name” players who he hopes will respond to the challenge, as the last wave of players did after the difficulties experienced in 2009 and 2010.

Without late withdrawals Luke Hodge and Luke Breust on Saturday, as well as a string of other key players, the young Hawks could not stop a masterclass performance from Gary Ablett (37 disposals) and some old-fashioned grit from Gold Coast, which kept their own season alive.

“They have a book called ‘The Hard Way’ about our footy club for a reason … I don’t know why but we find a way to do it pretty tough from time to time, which is what we are going through right at the minute,” Clarkson said.

“We have had ebbs and flows a lot over the last 50 years, (but) what this footy club has been great at, is once it has dropped away, it has managed to get back up there pretty quickly.

“We had a really, really young side … (it) is really starting to test our depth a bit, (but) the pleasing part is we are seeing the next generation of Hawthorn players coming through.”

Clarkson was at a loss to explain a few umpiring decisions, including a costly 50m penalty against Kaiden Brand in the final term that resulted in a goal.

“I am not able to comment on disgraceful umpiring … so I am better off not saying anything,” he said. “I don’t know what it was for.”

“We didn’t lose the game because of the umps, but there were a few dubious decisions over the course of the game. You’ve just got to take the swings and roundabouts and unfortunately we hit a few road blocks in that regard.”

He said Hodge and Breust would likely return after the week’s break, when the Hawks will take on Adelaide at Adelaide Oval in Round 14.

Jack Gunston played his best match of the season, kicking five goals, with Clarkson saying much of it came from better use of the ball from his teammates going forward.

Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade was pleased with his team’s ability to close out the game when the Hawks came at them during the middle stages of the last term.

“I think we’re on the upward curve,” he said. “There might be some inconsistency going forward, as a young group. But we’re learning.”

He was frustrated Ablett was forced to spend eight minutes on the bench midway through the last term as they searched for a break in play to be able to get him back on.

“There were a few things said in the (coaches’) box, we need to be better,” he said of the communication issue that saw Ablett stranded for too long.

Eade said a final punishment for Jarrod Harbrow, who was left out of Saturday’s game following a drink-driving charge, would be determined in the coming days. But he refused to guarantee the defender would return for Saturday night’s clash with Carlton.

“We’ve met as a group, the key stakeholders … and that’s with the CEO and other people up above,” he said. “I think it’s just about done but there’s just a few finer points.”
