Mark Humphrey/AP
Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday baselessly claimed to Fox News host Sean Hannity that he could have declassified top-secret documents just by thinking about doing it during his time in office.
During a lengthy sit-down interview that aired on Wednesday night, Hannity asked Trump if there was a "process" that he went through to get the documents found at his Mar-a-Lago home declassified.
Trump is currently the subject of an FBI probe into whether he broke any of three federal laws — including the Espionage Act — by keeping the documents at his Florida residence. During the FBI's raid of Mar-a-Lago on August 8, the agency seized 11 sets of classified documents, including some marked "top secret."
"There doesn't have to be a process as I understand it, and, you know, there's different people saying different things," Trump told Hannity.
"But as I understand, that doesn't have to be. If you're the president of the United States, you can declassify just by saying: 'It's declassified.' Even by thinking about it. Because you're sending it to Mar-a-Lago, or to wherever you're sending it," Trump said.
He went on to claim that he understood that "there can be a process" to declassify documents but that it didn't necessarily apply to him because he was president then.
"You're the president, you make that decision. So when you send it, it's declassified. I declassified everything," Trump claimed, adding that he believed the National Archives and Records Administration was run by a "radical left group."
—Acyn (@Acyn) September 22, 2022
Trump's claim to Hannity is erroneous. While sitting presidents can declassify documents, there is a process to get these documents declassified that involves proper documentation.
Leon Panetta, an Obama-era defense secretary, told CNN's Jake Tapper in August that there is a procedure involving paperwork from multiple agencies to get confidential information — like the files found in Trump's Florida residence — declassified.
"If presidents want to declassify, they have to follow that process which basically requires that it be referred to the agencies that are responsible for classifying that material," Panetta told CNN. "They have something to say as to whether or not that material should be declassified."
"So there is nothing that I'm aware of that indicates that a formal step was taken by this president to, in fact, declassify anything. Right now, this is pretty much BS," he added.
Trump's lawyers are attempting to get themselves out of having to hand over information about whether the documents were formally declassified.
In a letter to Judge Raymond Dearie — who was appointed, upon Trump's request, as a third-party neutral investigator — the former president's lawyers asked that he not have to hand over evidence about declassification in case such information becomes part of his defense in a subsequent indictment. This refusal to provide evidence earned a solid rebuke from Dearie, who told Trump's lawyers that they cannot "have your cake and eat it."
Meanwhile, a federal court has given the go-ahead to investigators to resume their review of classified records seized from Mar-a-Lago, following a successful application by the Department of Justice against District Judge Aileen Cannon's decision to halt the probe into the documents.

]]>Fans of the classic sitcom were left baffled after the broadcaster issued a “discriminatory language warning” before replaying the Dad’s Army film from 1971. The film, which stars the likes of Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring, follows the ageing Home Guard platoon’s formation, and subsequent trials at completing a training exercise. Dad’s Army became a firm favourite with TV fans during the late Sixties and early Seventies, as it mixed comedy with the antics of World War 2 life, striking a chord with many viewers.
However, after the BBC issued its warning, BBC2 fans hit out at the broadcaster, asking: “What has the world come to?”
The broadcaster said the warning came as a word used in the film was a “derogatory name for a black person”.
It added: “Since Dad’s Army first aired public attitudes have changed significantly and guidance was given at the start of the programme due to a specific discriminatory remark.”
The broadcaster is regularly targeted with claims of bias, and after the referendum result in 2016, which saw the UK vote to leave the EU, author and TV producer Daisy Goodwin said the BBC had to stop repeats of the sitcom.

The writer behind ITV drama Victoria said that the old episodes had convinced the public to back Leave, as opposed to Remain in the vote four years ago.
She said that if people wanted to blame the BBC “for influencing the nation’s state of mind about Brexit”, she suggested critics look at how many times Dad’s Army is repeated.
Ms Goodwin believed the only way for the BBC to “maintain its claim to impartiality” was to retire Dad’s Army from screens.
She added: “The world of Dad’s Army is a comforting place – it was reassuring during the mayhem of the three-day week and it’s soothing to those of us who worry about the effects of a no deal Brexit.”

The producer also likened characters from the show to members of the Cabinet, during an interview with the Radio Times.
Former Brexit Secretary David Davis “sounded like Corporal Jones” – one of the older characters, with the catchphrase “don’t panic” – while then-Chancellor Philip Hammond “has Sergeant Wilson’s hangdog look about him”.
She added: “There is more than a touch of wide-boy Walker to Boris Johnson, perhaps the Conservatives, indeed the whole nation, need to be reminded that we are not living in Walmington-on-Sea.
“Our current difficulties will not be resolved with a comic flourish and a jaunty burst of Bud Flanagan.”

Walmington-on-Sea is the fictional seaside town the Home Guard were protecting from Nazi invasion during World War 2.
The Home Guard was made up of locals who were unable to take part in regular military service, mainly due to being too old to join the Army or the Navy.
It was up to them to take on the German enemies if they invaded from across the Channel.
Brexit and the sitcom have often been related, with European Commission deputy president Frans Timmermans once claiming then-Prime Minister Theresa May’s negotiating team were running around like “Dad’s Army idiots”.

How Daily Express covered Brexit (Image: GETTY)
Speaking in 2019, Mr Timmermans claimed Mr Davis “didn’t have a plan” on how to progress Brexit.
He said: “The first time I saw public utterances by David Davis, and I saw him not coming, not negotiating, grandstanding elsewhere, I thought ‘oh my God, they haven’t got a plan.
“That was really shocking frankly because if you don’t have a plan — you know, we see it — time’s running out and you don’t have a plan. It’s like Lance Corporal Jones you know ‘don’t panic, don’t panic’, running around like idiots.”

Royal Mail immortalised Dad’s Army (Image: ROYAL MAIL)
The newest row bears a similar resemblance to the dispute over the BBC removing episodes of Fawlty Towers from its streaming service last year.
It was argued that jokes in an episode called ‘The Germans’ had become outdated, and Dad’s Army fans fear a similar fate could await their TV favourite.
Tony Pritchard, a member of the Dad’s Army Appreciation Society, said people are “judging programmes made 50 years ago by what people think today”, adding: “Where do you draw the line?”
Chris Watts, who is charged with the murder of his pregnant wife and two daughters, claimed he killed his wife because she strangled their daughters first — but police have reportedly found “no evidence” to back up his claims.
Watts, a 33-year-old father from Colorado, claimed that he killed his wife Shanann by strangling her because she had already killed their daughters Bella, four, and Celeste, three, according to a police affidavit released last week.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The footage, which has since been shared over 1,200 times, was posted on Sunday by Cesar Guardiola, who describes himself as a security advisor and retired military serviceman. It’s unclear what the source of the video is or whether Guardiola filmed it himself.
Maduro can be heard giving his speech in the background as the camera focuses on a drone flying in the sky. Shortly after, the drone is seen engulfed in a fireball, followed a split second later by a loud bang. The cameraman then briefly lowers the camera, as agitated voices of people standing nearby and rushing from the scene can be heard. As the camera shows the sky again, no trace of any flying object can be seen.
Earlier, the Venezuelan Minister of Communication and Information, Jorge Rodríguez, announced that six people had been detained in connection with the reported plot to kill Maduro amidst an army commemoration event on Saturday. The assassination attempt, according to Rodrigues, involved three drones, laden with explosives, all of which went off. One of them exploded right in front of the presidential box, while the second detonated to the right of the platform. The third drone, previously unreported, exploded to the south of the platform in the vicinity of a building, he said.
Earlier, it was reported that a building near the scene caught fire. Possible explanations voiced included a gas tank explosion and one of the drones crashing into it.
Maduro has blamed domestic ‘ultra-right’ opposition and Colombia for orchestrating the attack, which, according to Rodríguez, had taken six months to plot.
Maduro also alleged that “financiers and planners” of the attack, resided in the US state of Florida, and asked the US authorities for assistance in bringing the alleged perpetrators to justice.
Colombia has since refuted the claims that it had anything to do with the attack. The US President’s national Security Adviser John Bolton has also “unequivocally”dismissed speculation that Washington might have had a hand in the incident.
Leaders of several Latin American countries, including Venezuela’s closest allies Cuba, Nicaragua and Bolivia, have condemned the attack, with Bolivian President Evo Morales pinning the blame on the US and its ‘lackeys.’
Moscow has denounced the attempted assassination as an attempt to further destabilize the situation in the country, which is in severe economic crisis, calling it “the use of terrorism for political struggle.”

Two associates of Roger Stone, a longtime Republican strategist and informal adviser to President Donald Trump, said he was aware that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was in possession of a trove of hacked Democratic emails months before they became public, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
According to the report, Stone told an unnamed associate in the spring of 2016 that he had learned from Assange that WikiLeaks had obtained the hacked materials that would later become a thorn in the side for the Hillary Clinton campaign. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

In recent weeks, Coinbase has been hit with three federal lawsuits, alleging various types of wrongdoing ranging from security negligence to wrongfully keeping bitcoins to insider trading during last year’s Bitcoin Cash fork.
None of the lawsuits is related to the bitcoin exchange’s recent agreement to comply with a court order to hand over thousands of users’ personal data to the Internal Revenue Service as part of an investigation into tax fraud.
The first case, which was filed in February, involves a New York City man who called what he believed was a Coinbase customer service number to inquire about a pending litecoin transaction. It wasn’t. Over the course of the call, the man, Ezra Sultan, gave up his personal information (presumably this included the passcode to his account) to the imposter on the other end.

A transgender model who branded white people “racist” has been chosen as Labour’s new equalities adviser. The party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, has selected Munroe Bergdorf to work with its LGBT+ advisory group.
The 30-year-old model, from east London, revealed the news on Twitter. Posing next to Corbyn, she wrote: “Thrilled to announce that I’ve been asked to be part of an LGBT+ advisory board for The Labour Party – To advise Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, Dawn Butler MP, on issues affecting the LGBT+ community, to help form and push through fairer and more effective policy change.”

Bergdorf came to prominence when she became L’Oréal’s first trans model. Her stint for the cosmetics company was short lived, however, as she was fired only days after joining when critics unearthed comments she made in response to the far-right march in Charlottesville, US.
She had previously written about race issues, with one post positing her belief that white people are “drenched” in racism. At the time, she said: “When I stated that ‘all white people are racist’, I was addressing that fact that western society as a whole, is a SYSTEM rooted in white supremacy – designed to benefit, prioritise and protect white people before anyone of any other race. Unknowingly, white people are SOCIALISED to be racist from birth onwards. It is not something genetic. No one is born racist.”
Bergdorf has since said her words were misconstrued. Following the incident, some of her supporters said they would boycott L’Oréal over the issue.
The model, who is prevelant on social media, has taken aim at a number of targets, including the Suffragettes.
FYI – The Suffragettes were white supremacists who were fighting for WHITE womens rights – they specifically left black women out of the movement. It is not 100 years since women got the vote it’s 100 years since WHITE women got the vote. Black women couldnt vote until MUCH later
— Munroe Bergdorf

Tbh the fact that we are celebrating 100 years since women got the vote at the anniversary that white women got the vote. Shows how as a society we prioritise and centre white experiences, placing whiteness as the norm whilst erasing black history.
— Munroe Bergdorf

Following the post, Bergdorf was attacked the activist Caroline Criado Perez, who campaigned for the statue of British feminist Millicent Fawcett to be erected in Parliament Square.
Why do people keep claiming black women didn’t get the vote in 1918? There was no racial component of the law, there was an age & property component.
— Caroline Criado Perez (@CCriadoPerez) February 27, 2018
incredibly lazy and weird to just conflate British history with American history. British history is full of racism and oppression, but it’s not the same as America’s history.

Bergdorf has previously detailed her views on how racism is reproduced in society, arguing it is not something people learn through experience, but is “unconsciously passed down through privilege.”
She stated: “Because most of ya’ll don’t even realise or refuse to acknowledge that your existence, privilege and success as a race is built on the backs, blood and death of people of colour. Your entire existence is drenched in racism. From micro-aggressions to terrorism, you guys built the blueprint for this s–
“Come see me when you realise that racism isn’t learned, it’s inherited and consciously or unconsciously passed down through privilege. Once white people begin to admit that their race is the most violent and oppressive force of nature on Earth… then we can talk. “Until then stay acting shocked about how the world continues to stay f—— at the hands of your ancestors and your heads that remain buried in the sand with hands over your ears.”
A spokesperson for Labour MP Dawn Butler responded: “Dawn is proud to stand with those challenging discrimination. Dawn will consult with the LGBT+ advisory group on a wide-range of LGBT+ issues.”
