The US-led coalition has published the latest casualty figures for its airstrikes in Iraq and Syria since the start of Operation Inherent Resolve in 2014. At least 1,139 civilians have been “unintentionally” killed by coalition strikes, the statement said. The death toll, presented monthly by the US, has been repeatedly challenged by Amnesty International. The group says that the coalition was “deeply in denial” about the “large number of civilians killed and injured by [its] strikes.”

Speaking on condition of anonymity, Yemeni security officials confirmed the strike had occurred, however, they were unable to identify the intended target.

Backed by a Saudi-led coalition of mainly Gulf states, the ousted Yemeni government of Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi has been battling to regain control of the country from the Houthi rebels since 2015.

Support from Riyadh and its allies has mainly come in the form of devastating airstrikes on Houthi-controlled territory, with weapons, munitions, and support coming from allies in the US, UK, and other Western powers.

The city of Hodeida, controlled by the Houthis, has been the target of a renewed offensive by the coalition since September, in a bid to cut Houthi access to the sea – their only remaining source of resupply.

However, Saudi airstrikes have regularly struck civilian targets such as weddings, funerals, hospitals, and buses in the past.

In August, 50 people died, mostly children, and at least 77 were injured after a Saudi airstrike struck a bus. The coalition said the attack was “legitimate.”

The suffering caused by the Saudi’s errant bombing of Yemen’s civilians has been compounded by the growing humanitarian disaster as millions face the growing threat of famine.

Recent UN estimates say 14 million people now face “pre-famine conditions,” as skyrocketing food prices has seen people rely on food aid to survive.

Some 80 percent of this aid is accessed through the port of Hodeida, however resupply has been hampered since the coalition besieged the port in June. The Saudis argue the port is used by regional rivals Iran to smuggle weapons to the Houthis, a charge Tehran denies.

Warning that Yemen’s civilians were on the brink of starvation, Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock called for an “immediate cessation” of hostilities in and around the port to allow aid be delivered. He also called for increased funding and support for the humanitarian operation and for all factions to cooperate fully with the UN to bring an end to the conflict.

At least 15 Yemeni civilians were killed and 20 others injured when a minibus they were traveling in was struck in Jabal Ras District in Hodeidah Governorate, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Some of the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals. “This is a horrific incident,” said Lise Grande, the OCHA’s humanitarian coordinator for Yemen. “The United Nations agencies working in Yemen unequivocally condemn the attack on civilians and extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” she continued, while declining to place blame on any party. Yemen has been engaged in a brutal war since March 2015, with the Saudi-led coalition often coming under fire for its aerial bombardment of the country and civilian deaths. However, Riyadh denies allegations that it is targeting civilians.

Moscow is aware of who the people named as suspects in the Skripal saga are, President Vladimir Putin said, adding that these people are civilians.

Saying that there is “nothing criminal” about the two, Putin also hopes that the people in question will eventually come forward and talk to the media.

 “I want to address them [the suspects]… [I hope] they contact the media. I hope they appear and tell everything about themselves,” he said, addressing the audience during the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in the Russian city of Vladivostok.

Earlier in September, UK prosecutors named two Russians they suspect of poisoning Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury this March. According to London, their names are Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov. Russia denies any involvement and accuses Britain of spinning the case to stir anti-Russian sentiment.

Beyond identifying them as Russian nationals, the prosecutors gave no indication as to who the men are.

The evacuation is being monitored by the UN and other aid agencies, and a live broadcast of escape routes is available on the Russian Defense Ministry’s website, it said. Russia’s Reconciliation Center is negotiating another evacuation from the town of Douma, one of the last remaining strongholds controlled by militants.

Meanwhile, life is returning to normal in villages and settlements in Ghouta province. Displaced persons are returning to “areas liberated from armed groups,” General Rudskoy said, adding that “some 40,000 people have returned to their homes.”

The returnees are receiving aid packages delivered by UN agencies and the Russian Reconciliation Center, he said, adding that the “arrival of three UN aid convoys, carrying 445 tons of food, medicine and basic necessities, was ensured since the first humanitarian pause took effect in the enclave.”

Daily humanitarian pauses in eastern Ghouta began on February 27 as part of the Syrian military’s and Russia’s efforts to help civilians leave the combat zone. The Russian military has repeatedly said that the militants are using civilians as human shields, targeting those who are trying to flee the terrorist enclave.

Hundreds of militants and their families have begun leaving the town of Harasta in East Ghouta on Thursday, under a special, Russian-brokered agreement with the Syrian government, which will see them transported to Idlib province.

Two videos of Thursday’s mass evacuation have been obtained by RT’s Ruptly video agency. The drone footage shows a caravan of busses patiently waiting for the rebels and their families. Smoke is seen rising in the background of the town they leave behind.

The second video shows rebels loading bags onto waiting busses, as military personnel and tanks circle in the background. 

Under the deal struck between the Syrian government and members of the Ahrar al-Sham rebels, about 1,500 militants and 6,000 civilians, including the rebels’ families, plan to leave Harasta in two batches, a SANA reporter said on Thursday. So far, the news agency confirmed that 810 people have managed to exit Harasta via 10 buses, including 253 men, 157 women, 218 children and 182 militants. More are due to follow on Friday.

The surrender of hundreds of militants and their families was made possible after the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria announced the opening of a third humanitarian corridor in Harasta on Wednesday. To ensure transparency of the project, Russia installed CCTV cameras in all three of East Ghouta’s functioning corridors.

Meanwhile, civilians continue to flee the rebel-held territory through two other corridors in East Ghouta. “In total since the beginning of the humanitarian operation, 94,831 people have been evacuated from Eastern Ghouta with the help of the Russian Centre for Reconciliation,” the Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has visited eastern Ghouta on Sunday for the first time in years, where a military operation to retake the area from militants is ongoing and a steady stream of civilians are fleeing to safety.

Footage and photos released by the presidency and state media SANA show Assad meeting with frontline soldiers and some of those displaced from the former militant-held enclave. The casually dressed president praised them for the efforts to retake the Damascus suburb, which has been under militant control since 2012.

In his first visit to the area in years, the president was recorded talking and shaking hands with soldiers, as well as some civilians that were displaced by the fighting.

Tens of thousands of civilians have passed through humanitarian corridors established by the Russian and Syrian militaries, escaping eastern Ghouta where they had been used as human shields by terrorists from Jaysh al-Islam and other militant groups. On Sunday alone, more than 25,000 people reportedly left militant occupied areas of the city, bringing the total to over 70,000, according to data from the Russian Defense Ministry.

The UN and other humanitarian groups have been working with the Syrian government and Russian Center for Reconciliation to provide aid and assistance to the civilians leaving and those still trapped in the area of eastern Ghouta.

“We have thousands of people leaving their places, running away from battles. That is putting a lot of pressure on humanitarian workers, on the government services, on the people themselves,” UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria Ali Al-Za’tari told Russian media.
