A Democratic US congressman on Wednesday called for an emergency hearing into claims of fraud in a North Carolina election, where the state is probing alleged improper handling of ballots by political operatives.
Almost a month after Republican Mark Harris declared victory in his North Carolina race for a seat in the US House of Representatives, the state’s election board is declining to certify the result as it investigates mail-in ballots from two rural counties that have been called into question.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Trump confirmed Pruitt’s resignation on Twitter, but little was known about the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chief’s reasons for departure until the full text of his letter to the president was provided to the media. After praising Trump and the “transformative work” his administration has done, Pruitt says:
“However, the unrelenting attacks on me personally, my family, are unprecedented and have taken a sizable toll on all of us.”
Remember when Maxine Waters told people to publicly confront Trump Admin officials?
Remember 2 days ago a school teacher confronted Scott Pruitt at dinner?
IT Worked!!
Thanks @RepMaxineWatershttps://t.co/iMKaKWUiSp
— Brian Krassenstein (@krassenstein) July 5, 2018
Even before Pruitt’s resignation letter became public, critics of the Trump administration were claiming credit for his departure and pointing to calls by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-California) to “get a crowd together, confront Trump cabinet members” in public spaces.
A conservative watchdog has called for Waters to be investigated by the Office of Congressional Ethics for breaching the House rules of conduct.
On Monday, Pruitt was accosted at a Washington, DC restaurant by an area schoolteacher.
Holding her two-year-old son, Kristin Mink urged the EPA head to resign “because of what you’re doing to the environment in our country,” and “before your scandals push you out.”
The media have hounded the White House about Pruitt for months, with every news briefing containing a question about some action of his or another. One story accused him of renting a Washington, DC townhouse for $ 50 a night from an energy industry lobbyist. Another said his police escort used sirens to clear traffic before his motorcade. He reportedly gave two staffers who followed him to DC from Oklahoma major pay raises without White House approval. One of the reported scandals concerned the cost of Pruitt’s security detail, which was protecting him from activists and protesters.
Pruitt is the third Trump Cabinet official to be ousted over ethics complaints. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price resigned last year after it was reported he spent taxpayer funds on charter flights. Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin departed in March after the agency’s inspector-general said he improperly accepted a gift of Wimbledon tickets and brought his wife along on a working trip to Europe.
Democrats had been gunning for Pruitt even before the former Oklahoma attorney general was nominated to head the EPA, however, mobilizing protesters on social networks by using the hashtag #PollutingPruitt and accusing him of having ties with the oil and coal industries.
As the head of the EPA, Pruitt presided over the substantial roll-back of environmental regulations, as well as the US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords.
After finally getting Pruitt’s political scalp, the opposition party demanded more – ironically adopting Trump’s own campaign rhetoric about the Washington establishment.
“One down,” tweeted House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California), “dozens more to go until we’ve drained the swamp of the Trump Admin’s toxic culture and corruption.”
“Took you long enough. Still a very long way to go to fully drain the swamp,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) tweeted at Trump.
The Democrats’ political guns are now aiming at Pruitt’s replacement, acting administrator Andrew Wheeler, a “coal lobbyist who has slammed climate science” but also “trashed Trump in a 2016 Facebook post,” per Coral Davenport of the New York Times.

“As long as there is a continuous hostile policy against my country by the US and as long as there are continued war games on our doorstep, then there will not be negotiations,” Han Tae Song told Reuters on Friday. “There are continued military exercises using nuclear assets as well as aircraft carriers, and strategic bombers and then…raising such kinds of military exercises against my country.”
His remarks came after he was asked about recent bilateral talks between the US and South Korea in Seoul. During those talks, the two sides agreed to keep working towards a peaceful end to the North Korean crisis.
Han went on to state that North Korea “will continue to build-up its self-defense capability, the pivot of which is nuclear forces and capability for a triumphant…strike as long as US and hostile forces keep up nuclear threat and blackmail.” He added that “our country plans ultimate completion of the nuclear force.”
Han, who serves as ambassador to the UN’s Conference on Disarmament, also stressed that North Korea would not consider abandoning its nuclear program. “This is the deterrent, the nuclear deterrent to cope with the nuclear threat from America,” he said, while stating that he had no information on when Pyongyang might test another ballistic missile.
When asked about China’s reaffirmation that the best solution to the crisis is for Pyongyang and Washington to implement a “freeze for freeze program” which would see the North suspend its nuclear and ballistic missile tests in exchange for a halt in joint US-South Korea drills, a plan also supported by Russia, Han said, “The situation is far from those things.”
He said the US administration had “never accepted” halting joint military exercises. However, he appeared to entertain the idea of possible cooperation, should Washington agree to end its war games with Seoul. “If they accept such thing, then we will think what we do in the future,” he said.
Beijing’s reaffirmation of the “freeze for freeze” proposal, also referred to as the “double freeze” and “dual suspension” program, came after US President Donald Trump said that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping had agreed “agreed that we would not accept a so-called “freeze for freeze” agreement like those that have consistently failed in the past.”
Responding to the topic of sanctions issued against North Korea by the Trump administration, Han said their aim is to “overthrow the system of my country by isolating and stifling it and to intentionally bring about humanitarian disaster instead of preventing weapons development as claimed by the US and its followers.” He called the existing sanctions “large-scale human rights violations,” while saying Pyongyang is “ready” for any additional measures taken by Washington.
“The media is saying the Americans and Trump are considering such things… but that is their business and then we don’t mind what they want to do against my country since the aim is quite clear… so we are ready for such kinds of measures taken by America against my country.”
Han’s comments come just two days after an opinion piece in North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun, the Workers’ Party newspaper, called Trump a “hideous criminal sentenced to death by the Korean people. He will be forced to pay dearly for his blasphemy any moment.”

In now-deleted social media images, the Russian Ministry of Defense used what is almost certainly a screenshot from a mobile game as part of its supposed evidence that the United States military was supporting ISIS troops in Syria.
The posts, which went up on Facebook and Twitter Tuesday morning, included pictures that the text described as “irrefutable evidence” of “direct cooperation and support provided by the US-led coalition to the ISIS terrorists.” But as Kings College research associate Elliot Higgins noted on Twitter one of those pictures matches precisely with images found in an online trailer for AC-130 Gunship Simulator: Special Ops Squadron, a little-known mobile game from Byte Conveyor Studios. A warning from that trailer that the video was “Development footage / This is a work in progress / All content subject to change” was only partially cropped out of the Ministry of Defense posts, helping highlight the original source.
]]>Despite facing direct challenges and calls to step down from her role as House minority leader, Pelosi (California) said, “I have to stay,” during an interview on ABC’s ‘The View’ on Friday.
Pelosi had been describing meeting with President Donald Trump and members of his cabinet, alongside her Senate counterpart Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (New York). That bipartisan meeting last month ended up stirring feelings of betrayal among contingents from both parties, when Pelosi and Schumer announced a deal had been struck on immigration that excluded the president’s border wall.
“Some of the cabinet members at the table, I was the only woman at the table, and that’s why I have to stay there, to be one of the top women, top people, at the table,” she said to cheers from the TV studio audience.
“They asked a question,” she said of the cabinet members. “I was responding, and they all kept saying, well why aren’t we talking about this and why aren’t we—”
Pelosi then relayed that she told the table, “Does anybody listen when a woman speaks around here?”
The audience applauded, and then Pelosi clarified: “But the president was listening. I have to give him credit for that.”
Pelosi revealed that she has considered relinquishing her post, when she was asked about some of her colleagues wanting her to step aside to make way for “new blood” to lead Democrats in the House.
“I was ready to go if Hillary won, have a woman at the top of the table, protecting the Affordable Care Act, which is to me similar to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid,” Pelosi said
Pelosi overcame a challenge as minority leader when Congressman Tim Ryan of Ohio ran against her following the 2016 election. But the issue has not gone away, as just earlier this month, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez of California urged Pelosi and other longtime leaders to resign.
Pelosi has served as the leader of House Democrats since they broke the Republican majority in 2006, when she became the first female speaker of the House, a position formally third in line in the succession to the US presidency.

Twitter has said that Donald Trump’s “newsworthiness” was the reason why it did not remove a tweet from the US President threatening to wipe out North Korea.
As North Korea’s foreign minister Ri Yong Ho spoke at the United Nations Saturday, Trump posted a tweet which read, “Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at UN. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won’t be around much longer!”
Ri later said the message amounted to a “declaration of war” by the US.
Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won’t be around much longer!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2017
The tweet also angered Twitter users who wondered why Trump’s tweet was not deemed to have contravened the social media firm’s rules governing violence or the promotion of violence “including threatening or promoting terrorism.”
Among the considerations is “newsworthiness” and whether a Tweet is of public interest 3/6
— Twitter PublicPolicy (@Policy) September 25, 2017
The social media company replied to questions about the tweet by posting messages on its public policy account, citing “newsworthiness” and the public interest as reasons why it wasn’t removed.
“This has long been internal policy and we’ll soon update our public-facing rules to reflect it,” one message read. “We need to do better on this, and will.”
Twitter added that it is “committed to transparency and keeping people informed about what’s happening in the world.”
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un responded to Trump’s comments by calling the US president a “mentally deranged dotard” and threatened to explode a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean.
Trump’s comments are the latest to generate increased focus on rules governing posts on social media sites in recent times.

Last year, Facebook was criticized after banning an iconic image from the Vietnam War captured by photographer Nick Ut because it violated the site’s terms of service.
The image showed a naked nine-year-old girl running away from a napalm bombing alongside other children. The poster, Norwegian writer Tom Egeland had his account temporarily suspended.
The social media giant eventually reconsidered its stance, saying the image had “historic and global importance,” and added that it would consider such circumstances in the future.

The warning issued on Tuesday upgraded information in the two states. Quintana Roo, which was previously only targeted in a December report for lack of internet and cell phone service in some areas, and Baja California Sur, citing increased homicide rates from this time last year, according to the US State Department Travel Warning.
Quintana Roo has had 169 murders this year. The department states that turf wars between gangs are the reason for an uptick in violence, Bloomberg Politics reported.
The warning also states that US citizens should “defer non-essential travel” to certain areas in Mexico because US government personnel and their families are prohibited from traveling to the areas outlined in the warning. As a result of this, personnel response times in an emergency may be “hampered or delayed.”
The expanded travel warning may hurt these areas, which pull in $ 20 billion a year for Mexico. Quintana Roo houses the resorts of Tulum and Cozumel, which attract 10 million tourists a year. This amounts to one-third of the national total for tourists.
“Shooting incidents, in which innocent bystanders have been injured or killed, have occurred” in both areas, the US warned, according to the State Department document. “While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by US citizens.”
Quintana Roo’s tourism ministry responded to the warning quickly, saying in a statement that the state is “safe and protected” and the government will continue to collaborate with US and federal officials regarding security, according to Bloomberg.
Coparmex is a business group that represents more than 200 hotels, restaurants and other companies in Cancun. The business says the warning will affect bookings in the winter when Americans head to the beaches to stave off the cold weather.
The head of Coparmex in Cancun, Adrian Lopez Sanchez, says that security is beginning to improve right now after declining earlier this year and last year.
Occupancy at hotels in Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and surrounding resorts rose to 78.6 percent in the year through July. That is an increase from the 75.1 percent in the period a year earlier, according to STR, which provides data and analytics on the lodging industry, Bloomberg reported.

“Tourism is very sensitive,” Sanchez said, according to Bloomberg. “Warnings directed toward the US market are significant.”
Tourism officials in Riviera Maya, a 140-mile-long area of the Caribbean coastline, which includes Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, have already been on the defensive this year regarding vacation advisories, following the death of a 20-year-old Wisconsin woman named Abbey Connor.
Connor allegedly consumed tainted alcohol at a resort in the area and later died, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The State Department issued a report after that incident advising US citizens to drink alcohol in moderation and seek help if they begin to feel ill, CNN reported.

The International Monetary Fund has released its US economic growth forecasts. Uncertainty in President Donald Trump’s fiscal plans has erased previous predictions of a faster growing economy.
On Tuesday, the IMF cut its 2017 and 2018 growth forecasts for the US down to 2.1 percent, according to the IMF Mission concluding statement report.
The IMF’s April 2.3 percent prediction for 2017 and 2.5 percent US growth forecast for 2018 have now been changed, according to Bloomberg.
Following a review of US economic policy, the IMF has said that it is unlikely that the Trump administration’s fiscal plans and tax cuts will meet its GDP growth goal of 3 percent over a sustained period due to the lack of details concerning the $ 3.6 trillion in spending cuts for the government proposed in May, according to Reuters.
Alejandro Werner, director of the IMF’s Western Hemisphere Department, said at a press briefing in Washington that “we have removed the assumed fiscal stimulus from our forecast.”
The IMF cites that the US is experiencing “its third largest expansion since 1850.” And that “the US is effectively at full employment.”
“For policy changes to be successful in achieving sustained, higher growth, they would need to raise the US potential growth path,” the IMF report said.
Growth is projected to drop to 1.9 percent in 2019 and 1.8 percent in 2020, according to the IMF.
The IMF mentioned that the disproportionate cuts in spending to middle- and low-income households “would appear counter to the budget’s goal of promoting safety and prosperity for all Americans,” according to Reuters.
The fund has made a suggestion to follow a tax policy which focuses more on the revenue to GDP ratio. They would ask for cuts that are more balanced and boost the strength and efficiency of the social safety net. The fund also includes plans to rein in inflation costs in healthcare, Reuters reported.

Since the Switch started to show up in gamer’s homes, some have been complaining about issues with its wireless Joy-Cons. Problems with losing connection, particularly on the left one, have plagued some enough to attempt DIY fixes, but in a statement to Kotaku, Nintendo said there could be a reason for problems.
Nintendo:
“There is no design issue with the Joy-Con controllers, and no widespread proactive repair or replacement effort is underway. A manufacturing variation has resulted in wireless interference with a small number of the left Joy-Con. Moving forward this will not be an issue, as the manufacturing variation has been addressed and corrected at the factory level.
We have determined a simple fix can be made to any affected Joy-Con to improve connectivity.”
This jibes with something CNET editor Sean Hollister noticed after Nintendo performed a quick fix on his troublesome left Joy-Con. By taking before and after pictures, he observed that the only change made was the addition of a bit of conductive foam, possibly to shield the controller from interference. Also, a new controller purchased from Amazon lacked the modification, but sported a circuit board with a different manufacturing code.
Nintendo also said that there are other reasons Joy-Cons could have connection issues, but given this information, if you’re having problems then you should contact the company and get the fix.
