  • Facebook came back under fire this weekend after its advertising executive Rob Goldman accused the media of misrepresenting the way Russian trolls used its platform.
  • Goldman, who said most Russian ads were bought after the 2016 presidential election, was retweeted by President Donald Trump as proof that the media is “fake news.”
  • The tweets launched a debate over whether Goldman should have publicly criticized coverage of Facebook in a way that is easily misconstrued as support for Trump.

Facebook is under fire again this weekend after one of its executives suggested the media misrepresented details around the company’s role in Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Rob Goldman, vice president of ads at Facebook, took to Twitter on Friday to critique what he sees as inaccurate news coverage of Russian advertising buys. He was making a point about the ongoing use of Facebook by Russian trolls, but that point wasn’t clear to everyone.

Volkswagen has been storing some of its more than 100,000 bought-back TDI-equipped cars in various places around the country as the automaker wades through the largest scandal in its 80-year history. One such location appears to have become a bit of a problem. The city of Pontiac has cited the property owners of the blighted Silverdome, a former NFL stadium where the Detroit Lions played from 1975 to 2001, for turning the site into a massive parking lot for diesel-powered VWs in limbo.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Pontiac has issued six citations to Triple Investment Group, ranging from improper security of the cars to lacking a business license to store them there. Triple Investment Group has owned the 127-acre site since 2009, when it bought it in a city auction for $ 583,000.

Car and Driver attempted to contact the property owners, as well as the city of Pontiac and Volkswagen, on Thursday. A VW spokesman told C/D earlier this year that the company was keeping the cars maintained at various sites around the U.S., including the Silverdome, until a final fix is made for the cars or until they are otherwise recycled in some form.

Volkswagen admitted in September 2015 to purposely rigging its TDI-equipped vehicles with “defeat devices” that would trick emissions testers. It has since agreed to pay out billions of dollars, including setting aside some $ 11.2 billion to offer buybacks for more than half a million affected cars.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer continued his defense of President Donald Trump’s unfounded claims that the Obama administration spied on Trump Tower during the election.

Members of Trump’s inner circle have sparred with lawmakers and intelligence officials over the matter for nearly two weeks.

During a White House press briefing on Thursday, Spicer cited comments from Fox News commentator Andrew Napolitano that Spicer said confirmed Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), an intelligence agency, took part in a spy operation at Trump Tower during the 2016 US election.

“Three intelligence sources have informed Fox News that President Obama went outside the chain of command,” Spicer said, reading from notes in the White House press room on Thursday. “[Obama] didn’t use the NSA, he didn’t use the CIA, he didn’t use the FBI, and he didn’t use the Department of Justice. He used GCHQ, what is that? It’s the initials for the British Intelligence Spying Agency,” Spicer said.

A spokesperson for the GCHQ quickly issued a statement debunking the Fox News report Spicer was referencing.

“Recent allegations made by media commentator judge Andrew Napolitano about GCHQ being asked to conduct ‘wiretapping’ against the then president-elect are nonsense,” the statement read. “They are utterly ridiculous and should be ignored.”

Spicer engaged in a heated discussion with reporters on Thursday about Trump’s wiretap claims — which Trump had appeared to walk back during an interview on Fox News the night before.

Trump has previously urged congressional lawmakers to look into the matter. The Senate Intelligence Committee has, and issued a joint statement on Thursday saying it sees “no indications” Trump was wiretapped.

President Donald Trump cited a nonexistent incident in Sweden while talking about the relationship between terror attacks and refugees around the world during a rally in Melbourne, Florida, on Saturday.

“You look at what’s happening in Germany. You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden … Sweden … who would believe this? Sweden, they took in large numbers, they are having problems like they never thought possible. You look at what’s happening Brussels, you look at what’s happening all over the world,” Trump said. 

No incident occurred in Sweden on Friday night.

However, Fox News host Tucker Carlson ran an interview on Friday night’s broadcast of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” with documentarian and media personality Ami Horowitz, who presented a clip from a new film documenting alleged violence committed by refugees in Sweden. The segment went on extensively about a supposed crime surge in Sweden and its links to immigrant populations. 

Crime rates in Sweden have stayed relatively stable, with some fluctuations, over the last decade, according to the 2016 Swedish Crime Survey.

This isn’t the first time that there has been a correlation between Trump’s statements and programming on cable news, of which he is a noted fan.

In late January, Trump tweeted about gun violence in Chicago shortly after after an “O’Reilly Factor” segment on the same topic, which cited the same statistics and even used the word “carnage,” a recent favorite noun of Trump’s.

In February, Trump declared in a tweet that he was calling “my own shots” in his administration shortly after MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough asked on air whether Trump’s chief White House strategist, Steve Bannon, was “calling the shots” in the White House.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer suggested he misspoke when he cited an Atlanta terror attack that never happened.

At least three times last month, Spicer mentioned a nonexistent Atlanta, Georgia, terror attack while defending Trump’s controversial travel ban. Spicer named Atlanta alongside the Boston Marathon bombings and the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.

In a statement to ABC News Wednesday night, Spicer said he “clearly meant Orlando,” apparently referring to the mass shooting in June at a gay nightclub in Florida.

The Daily Beast first caught Spicer’s misstatements on Tuesday.

On Jan. 29, Spicer explained on ABC’s “This Week”:

“What do we say to the family who loses somebody over a terroristic [sic] — to whether it’s Atlanta or San Bernardino or the Boston bomber? Those people, each of whom had gone out to a country and then come back.”

The very next day, Spicer took to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to defend Trump’s travel ban again:

“What happened if we didn’t act and somebody was killed? … Too many of these cases that have happened — whether you’re talking about San Bernardino, Atlanta … would you wait until you do? The answer is we act now to protect the future.”

Finally, at a press briefing on January 30, Spicer once again referenced Atlanta:

“But I don’t think you have to look any further than the families of the Boston Marathon, in Atlanta, in San Bernardino …”

Atlanta Police Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Espy said in a statement to CNN the department was unaware of any recent terrorist attacks. “From what we can recall, the last known terrorist attack in the state was 1996 in which Eric Rudolph was implicated,” she wrote, referring to a bombing that happened at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway last week was criticized for citing a “Bowling Green Massacre” — another terror attack that never happened.

Earlier this week, the White House released a list of 78 terror attacks that it alleged went underreported by the media, ostensibly to support its argument for the travel ban. Several incidents on that list, however, were indeed widely reported by news organizations worldwide.

One of President Donald Trump’s top White House advisers referred to a terror attack that never happened in an MSNBC interview that aired on Thursday night.

Kellyanne Conway suggested that the so-called “Bowling Green Massacre” in Bowling Green, Kentucky, was one of the catalysts for Trump’s executive order banning nationals from seven Muslim-majority states like Iraq.

There was no such attack in the US.

During her interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, Conway described the false incident as two Iraqi refugees having come to the US, becoming radicalized, and masterminding the nonexistent attack. Conway offered no evidence to back up her claims and flatly suggested that “most people don’t know … because it didn’t get covered.”

Neither Conway, nor a White House spokesperson immediately responded to a request for comment.

The only incident surrounding Iraqi refugees and Bowling Green, Kentucky, in recent history was a 2011 case in which two Iraqi nationals were indicted on federal charges on accusations that they tried to provide material support to terrorists and to al Qaeda in Iraq.

The FBI’s 2011 press release said that the two men, Waad Ramadan Alwan, 30, and Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, 23, were former residents of Iraq who lived in Bowling Green at the time of their arrests. Alwan was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison in and Hammadi received a life term in 2013, the FBI said.

Despite Conway’s allegations, there was no massacre in Bowling Green, and, according to the FBI’s statement on the matter, there was no plan for a terror attack in that city.
