LOS ANGELES—A new kind of entertainment is opening next month: a large, carnival-like arcade filled with VR headsets, brand-new arcade cabinets, holograms, escape rooms, a robot bartender named Guillermo del Pouro, hidden passages, and more. It’s called Two Bit Circus, and it’s run by a company of the same name. Founded by Eric Gradman (a computer programmer who has also worked as a circus performer) and Brent Bushnell (an engineer who is also the son of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese’s co-founder Nolan Bushnell), Two Bit Circus is something of a staple in the LA scene now. Their previous individual installations have appeared at nightclubs, corporate events, and more. Japanese movie star Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) inherits the role in this revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Broadway blockbuster that has already won four Tonys including Best Leading Actress In A Musical for Kelli O’Hara in the role of Anna. It takes 20 seconds to see why. O’Hara owns the role from the moment she and her young son arrive on a paddle steamer in Siam so Anna can take up the role of governess and teacher to the King’s children. He has a lot of children: 67 at the start of the play, 77 by the end. No wonder he looks exhausted in the final scene. During the course of her years in Siam, Anna not only teaches a privileged selection of the children about the Western world and instils in them Victorian values but she teaches the King to become a more liberal ruler, as well as teaching him the joys of the waltz. O’Hara conveys the spirited stoicism of the Victorian gentlewoman with utter conviction. Her singing is superb and semi-operatic but free enough to play with the tempo of Hello Young Lovers like Julie Andrews possessed by Frank Sinatra. Watanabe may not be the world’s greatest singer, over-performing It’s A Puzzlement, and his accent is so strong that he is not always intelligible. But his theatrical presence, timing and the depth he brings to the role are ample compensations. The moment in the Shall We Dance sequence when he insists on holding Anna in the British fashion as opposed to at arm’s length is absolutely electrifying. There is much to praise in Bartlett Sher’s production. The children, including one of the tiniest performers I have ever seen on stage, are wonderful and individually well-defined. The ballet-within-the-musical, The Small House Of Uncle Thomas, is a model of East/West choreography by Jerome Robbins and beautifully revised by Christopher Gattelli. Naoko Mori provides a highlight as Lady Thiang with Something Wonderful and Na-Young Jeon is heartbreaking as the tragic concubine Tuptim. Some misguided commentators have complained about racial stereotyping in The King And I but this is a liberal musical about the difficulties and benefits of two opposing cultures finding common ground and learning from each other. And with numbers including I Whistle A Happy Tune and Getting To Know You, as well as the hysterically funny Western People Funny, it has more singalong songs than almost any other musical I can think of. Until September 29. Tweedy The Clown might be the fulcrum on which the show revolves but he also performs juggling tricks, aerial stunts and plays the bagpipes. Better still he doesn’t wear scary “It” clown make-up. A scarlet tuft of hair is his one concession to clown-like presentation. Modelled on an Edwardian-style village green circus, Giffords started life in 2000. The retro-nostalgia trip is perfect in every detail. The current show, My Beautiful Circus, hovers around the 1920s/1930s, with a great band playing non-stop Gershwin, Cole Porter and Arthur Freed songs fronted by a singer in a satin dress and a feathered headband. Acts include Nell Gifford’s performing Shetland ponies, Diana’s Dancing Dachshunds, an aristocratic grey horse and a talking turkey. There is also a strongman with an afro the size of Wales. Breathtaking balancing acts, high-flying teeterboard acrobats and elegant aerialists complete the picture. The real secret to Giffords is that the performers, on four legs and two, seem to be having as much fun as the audience. The show is family-friendly with a light coating of mischief (Tweedy loses his trousers and the singer loses her dress in a mutual comic strip), making it harmless, charming and heaps of fun. Until July 9 (touring until September 30). Tickets: 01242 691181

A spokesperson for the Russian Foreign ministry called the hearing at the British parliament on Skripal case a circus show.
Follow RT’s coverage of the debate at the Parliament
“The conclusion is obvious: this is another information and political campaign, based on provocation,” said Maria Zakharova, commenting on the words of Theresa May.
Zakharova’s comments come after May said earlier on Monday that the “attempted murder” of Skripal was either “a direct act by the Russian State against our country, or the Russian government lost control of this potentially catastrophically damaging nerve agent and allowed it to get into the hands of others.”
May said that the Russian ambassador to the UK has been summoned to the Foreign Office, and that he must explain which explanation is the correct one. The ambassador has until the end of Tuesday to respond, according to May. If he does not give a “credible response,” the UK will conclude that the attack involved “unlawful use of force by the Russian state against the United Kingdom.” In that case, May said she will return to the House of Commons to outline retaliatory proposals.
Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter have been in critical condition in hospital since March 4, when they were found unconscious on a bench outside a shopping center in Salisbury.
“Before creating new fairy tales, let somebody in the kingdom tell us what was the result of the previous investigations into the Litvinenko, Berezovsky and Perepilichny cases,” Zakharova suggested.

Iran’s foreign minister ridiculed a security conference speech by Netanyahu, who used a part of a drone to make a point. He lashed out at Israel’s “aggression to neighbors” and mentioned the country’s “crumbling invincibility.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif spoke at the Munich Security Conference a few hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu displayed what he said was a piece of an Iranian drone shot down last week by Israeli forces. The Iranian official dismissed the use of the prop as a “cartoonish circus” that was meant “to blame others for its own strategic blunders, or maybe to evade the domestic crisis they’re facing.”
He added that Israel was avoiding discussion of its own hostile and destructive policies in the Middle East.
“Israel uses aggression as a policy against its neighbors,” Zarif said, citing the regular air incursions into Syria and Lebanon. “The entire speech [by Netanyahu] was trying to evade the issue.”
Zarif also said that the loss of a fighter jet by Israel during the latest flare-up on the Syrian border tarnished the image of invincibility the Israeli military has.
Earlier on Sunday, Netanyahu called Iran the biggest threat in the world, and taunted Zarif while holding the aircraft fragment.

Multiple unexpected claims have been made on Charles Mason’s remains. Now a Los Angeles Superior Court judge will have to determine the county where the matter should be decided.
The 83-year-old convicted murderer was not originally thought to have a named next of kin, but multiple claimants have emerged, including a pen pal, an estranged grandson in Florida and another man claiming to be Manson’s long-lost son.
Manson died in a Bakersfield hospital in November of cardiac arrest following an illness, after having spent decades in jail for his crimes.
Prison officials previously indicated Manson had not listed anyone as his next of kin. A pen pal, one of the legal claimants, shared a document dated 2002 to US media that says he is entitled to all of Manson’s person belongings after his death.
Another document purporting to be a valid will was reportedly filed by Matthew Robers, who alleges that Manson was his father.
The last petitioner is Jason Freeman, a 41-year-old Florida man who originally came forward in 2012 purporting to be Manson’s grandson. Freeman wants a private cremation for Manson, with whom he said he had some contact in recent years.
Only the pen pal and the supposed ‘grandson’ were in court Monday, so the case has been narrowed between them.
Mason was the notorious ring leader of a cult of followers known as the ‘Manson Family’ who committed a string of high profile murders in the ‘60s. Among the eight killed was the actress Sharon Tate, who was pregnant.
Since the murder convictions, Manson had been imprisoned at various locations, including San Quentin, the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, Folsom, and at Corcoran state prisons.
Manson’s notoriety has fueled a trade in macabre memorabilia, or “murderabilia,” throughout his life, including the psychedelic folk music he recorded before his crimes.
A lawyer representing the county where Manson died, Bryan Walters, described the legal case as “really weird” and “like a circus,” and admitted the process “hasn’t gone as smoothly as we hoped.”
“When we received it, we thought no one would claim the body. We assumed it would be an easy matter to take care of.”
“He is a figure of public scrutiny, so the simple is just not possible,” he said.

The Circus is coming back to town, now that Showtime has renewed its political documentary series for a third season, it was announced on Wednesday.
The new season, premiering Sunday, April 15 at 8/7c, has Alex Wagner (of CBS News and The Atlantic) joining NBC/MSNBC’s John Heilemann and Mark McKinnon as a permanent host. As previously reported, NBC News’ Mark Halperin is out as host, having been fired by Showtime in the wake of sexual harassment allegations.
Chronicling the year ahead, The Circus will continue to explore the stories behind the headlines and pull back the curtain on the behind-the-scenes drama in Washington and across the country, especially as the nation prepares for November’s unarguably consequential midterm elections.

The review embargo for “The Greatest Showman” was lifted at 3 a.m. EST on Wednesday, and the critics have weighed in.
They don’t like it.
For the most part, Hugh Jackman’s long-gestating musical about circus man P.T. Barnum is hollow, barely comprehensible, and whitewashes the uglier parts of his life. And while the movie has an excellent supporting cast — Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya — they don’t have much to do except for sing and dance.
If you like loud, bombastic, inspirational musical numbers, then you might have fun at “The Greatest Showman,” even if your enjoyment might be empty. But if you prefer a passionate portrayal of a Victorian Era “freak” to society, stick with “The Elephant Man.”
Here’s what critics are saying about “The Greatest Showman.”
“This ersatz portrait of American big-top tent impresario P.T. Barnum is all smoke and mirrors, no substance. It hammers pedestrian themes of family, friendship and inclusivity while neglecting the fundaments of character and story.”
— The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney
“‘The Greatest Showman,’ a montage sequence that occasionally turns into a movie musical, steers clear of any contemporary resonance and ignores meaty themes. The first-time director Michael Gracey achieves an aggressively synthetic style through kinetic editing and tidy underdog stories, but none of the true joy of pulling a fast one. It’s a standard-issue holiday biopic, one that tells a story about a populist entertainer hungry for highbrow respect, the joys of showbiz and the price of ambition. An amusement park version of P.T. Barnum is fine, as far as that goes, but if you are going to aim for family-friendly fun, you need to get the fun part right.”
— The New York Times’s Jason Zinoman
“Because ‘The Greatest Showman’ is not, in any traditional sense of the phrase, a biographical motion picture about P.T. Barnum. It is a high-energy, breathless fantasy. Employing sleight of hand, some fast talking, and a lot of tall tales, it exaggerates the legend until the illusion takes on a life of its own, turning into the promised ‘fever dream’ that, while admittedly stuffed with some truly excellent musical setpieces, has something sinister at its core.
“In the 19th century, P.T. Barnum made his name as a freak show peddler; a simple Google search will surface the reports of the abuse and the fetishizing of minorities, the disabled, and the ostracized, all in the name of impressing looky-loos with “oddities.” In the grand, uplifting musical extravaganza ‘The Greatest Showman,’ Barnum is these outsiders’ song-and-dance savior, with Hugh Jackman starring as a gumptious street urchin who becomes three-ring Jesus.”
— The Daily Beast’s Kevin Fallon
“As Barnum himself notes at one point, ‘No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else.’ Admittedly, that maxim rings a bit hollow coming from a character whose real-life counterpart shamelessly exploited his performers’ differences, inflaming the public’s racism as well as its hunger for spectacle and grotesquerie. Curiously absent from the movie’s relentless feel-good offensive are any references to, say, the blackface minstrel acts that Barnum produced. Nor is there any mention of Joice Heth, a slave whom Barnum paraded before his customers, falsely claiming that she was George Washington’s 161-year-old former ‘mammy.’
— The Los Angeles Times’s Justin Chang
“Jackman made an indelible Wolverine, but Barnum is the role he was born to play. A stage veteran with such refined charm that it can’t help but invite a certain degree of suspicion, Jackman has already proven that he can sell audiences on a lovable flimflam man (he does it twice over in ‘The Prestige’ alone), but here he gets to combine his strengths with a part that allows him to hoodwink us and act the hero at the same time. In a movie where virtually nothing is believable, or even tries to be, Jackman manages to sell every note and adjust for inflation.”
“First-time director Michael Gracey, working from a script by Jenny Bicks (‘Sex & the City’) and Bill Condon (‘Chicago,’ ‘Gods and Monsters,’ ‘Dreamgirls’), plunges ahead in a giddy rush, carving out ample opportunities for his stars to sing the soaring rock-opera compositions penned by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the gifted musical duo behind ‘La La Land’ and ‘Dear Evan Hansen.’ What he doesn’t make much room for is subtlety; every emotion is signaled to the peanut gallery, every story beat landed with a foot stomp and a handclap.
— Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblatt
“In a weaselly little move, the film, written by Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon, also attempts to inoculate itself against any criticism by putting a critic (Paul Sparks) right into the story, framing him as a scold and a jerk who fails to see the majesty of what Barnum and his ragtag circus folk are doing.”
— Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson

A tiger which escaped from a Paris circus briefly caused pandemonium in the heart of the French capital. The animal was shot dead by circus staff, which triggered outrage among local residents and online.
Reports of a tiger roaming the streets of the city’s 15th arrondissement emerged shortly before 6pm local time. “Traffic is interrupted on the T3a line because of the presence of a tiger, belonging to a nearby circus,” the T3a tramway line operator suddenly confirmed.
“At first, we thought it was a technical incident,” a passenger on the tram told France Info. “Then the driver told us it was a tiger. Naturally, we wondered what was going on.”
“It was a big tiger,” said another witness. “We freaked out because it happened when we were leaving work. We saw it running. It’s really sad.”
Armed police and firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, but gunshots rang out into the night before they figured out their containment plan.
The animal was “neutralized” near the Garigliano bridge over the River Seine, about 2 kilometers from the Eiffel Tower, according to AP. Paris police confirmed that “all danger has been averted” after the tiger was killed by one of the circus’ staff. By 6:30pm the tramway traffic was brought back to normal.
“The owner was in shock. When we arrived the 200-kilogram tiger was already dead,” Valerian Fuet, a spokesman for the firefighters, told AFP. The owner, who was not named, was taken into custody while authorities launched an investigation into the incident, according to a police source.
The tiger escaped from the Bormann Circus, which had been preparing for several upcoming performances in December. The animal’s killing prompted outrage on social media.
“Without a tiger in the circus, this kind of problem would not arise,” wrote Olivier Peru.
“The sad life of a tiger prisoner of a circus, who tries to escape from his miserable life and who ends up coldly shot,”added Maxime Riou.
Just a few days ago, a journalist from the Libération newspaper spotted three circus tigers being held in a cage nearby, and spoke out against their conditions. On Friday, she again posted a picture of the tigers, one of which is now dead.
“We must react immediately and ban this exploitation of wild animals reduced to slavery,” said the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, founded by the famous French actress who became a prominent animal rights activist. “It’s a miracle that there weren’t any human victims this time.”
