Russia’s Vladimir Putin got behind the steering wheel to show Egypt’s Abdel Fatah el-Sisi what the Formula 1 circuit in Sochi looks like, picking an Aurus sedan from his motorcade for the job.

After concluding their talks on Wednesday, the two leaders traveled to the Sochi Autodrom, which just recently hosted the Russian F1 Grand Prix. They took the trip in President Putin’s new Russian-made Aurus Senat Limousine that was only premiered during the Russian president’s inauguration this May.

At the race track, Trade Minister Denis Manturov showed off two other Aurus models – Senat sedan and Arsenal minivan – to the two presidents. Both serve as part of the Russian president’s motorcade.

But simply looking wasn’t enough, as Sisi fully backed Putin’s idea to take one of the cars on a test drive. They opted for the Aurus sedan and drove around the circuit with the Russian president behind the wheel and his Egyptian counterpart as passenger.

Sisi isn’t the first foreign leader who got treated with a demo of the Aurus brand. Putin previously showed the Russian cars to Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and some other prominent guests – but stopped short of actually test-driving them.

The Aurus line (Au/Aurum being Latin for ‘gold’ and ‘Rus’ standing for ‘Russian’), which is crowned by the armored presidential limousine, has been in development since 2012 as part of a project called Kortezh (motorcade). The cars are expected to enter the market in 2019. The new Aurus SUV, called Komendant, is also expected to be unveiled next year.

Random quantum circuit easiest way to beat classical computer https://briefnews.eu/random-quantum-circuit-easiest-way-to-beat-classical-computer/ https://briefnews.eu/random-quantum-circuit-easiest-way-to-beat-classical-computer/#respond Wed, 02 May 2018 03:36:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/random-quantum-circuit-easiest-way-to-beat-classical-computer/

Enlarge / The evolution of a chaotic quantum system. (credit: Joint Quantum Institute)

One of the near-term (but somewhat irrelevant) goals of quantum computing is something called quantum supremacy. Quantum supremacy is not, sadly, a cage fight between proponents of competing interpretations of quantum mechanics. It is a demonstration of a quantum computer performing a computation, no matter how trivial, that cannot be performed on a classical computer.

The key question: what computation should be performed? A team of researchers is suggesting that computing the state of a random quantum circuit that exhibits chaotic behavior would be perfect for the task. Let’s delve into why that might be.

Getting all superior

The idea of quantum supremacy goes a bit like this. Yes, we have all of these different versions of quantum computing. And yes, they all seem to behave how we expect a quantum computer to behave. But they are all remarkably slow and can easily be beaten by classical computers.

Circuit City is coming back, and this time, the license holders propping up the ancient big-box retail chain say they mean it.

Following a tease of a CES announcement, current company CEO Ronny Shmoel confirmed on Monday that something called Circuit City will arrive as “a new, more personalized online shopping experience” starting February 15. The announcement event, which was reported by tech-business outlet Twice, included promises of AI-driven recommendations fueled by IBM’s Watson platform, plus unexplained “augmented reality” and “search by photo” features.

Curiously, Shmoel also promised “real-time tech support via video chat,” but it’s unclear whether this feature will include two-way video feeds—and, thus, whether Circuit City is prepared for a deluge of Chatroulette-caliber video surprises from trolls.

Supreme Court blocks 9th Circuit restrictions on Trump's refugee ban https://briefnews.eu/supreme-court-blocks-9th-circuit-restrictions-on-trumps-refugee-ban/ https://briefnews.eu/supreme-court-blocks-9th-circuit-restrictions-on-trumps-refugee-ban/#respond Mon, 11 Sep 2017 19:21:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/supreme-court-blocks-9th-circuit-restrictions-on-trumps-refugee-ban/

The US Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a lower court’s ruling which outlined exemptions from the Trump administration’s temporary ban on refugees.

The Department of Justice asked the Supreme Court early on Monday to stay the decision by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which sought to expand the class of refugees that could be admitted to the US.

The California-based 9th Circuit ruled on Thursday that “refugees who have formal assurances from resettlement agencies or are in the US Refugee Admissions Program (“USRAP”) through the Lautenberg Amendment” should be allowed in.

President Donald Trump initially ordered a temporary ban on almost all refugee admissions to the US.

While federal judges immediately sought to block the order, the Supreme Court allowed it to partially go into effect in a June 26 ruling, specifying that exemptions must be made for those with “a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States.”

Several conservative Justices were unhappy with the phrasing, predicting it would lead to endless litigation and efforts by lower courts to interpret it as broadly as possible.

Since then, several motions have been filed against the Trump administration’s implementation of the restrictions, claiming that the government’s definition of a “bona fide relationship” was too narrow.

The 9th Circuit also ruled that extended family such as grandparents, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins of persons in the United States should be exempt from the travel ban, which restricts entry for citizens of six predominantly Muslim countries – Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Monday’s filing from the DOJ did not contest that portion of the ruling, Reuters reported.

The 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang are fast approaching and winter athletes from around the globe are competing in the all-important World Cup circuit.

A crucial performance indicator ahead of the 2018 Games in South Korea, the World Cup circuit includes all sports that will be part of the Olympic programme.

Canada captured four medals, including three gold, but dipped to third spot in the standings behind the United States after 525 events.

The Canadians have 52 gold to 49 by the Americans, who hold a 144-142 edge in overall medals, 54 behind the first-place Germans in the World Cup standings.

History repeated itself in the men’s race at the World Cup ski cross event at Blue Mountain, Ont., with Canada’s Brady Leman winning and Chris Del Bosco coming second, a repeat of the 2012 World Cup on the same course.

On the women’s side, Marielle Thompson won for the seventh time this season and was presented her third Crystal Globe as the overall champion, which she had clinched in late February in Sunny Valley, Russia.

The strong performance by the 24-year-old from Whistler, B.C., was the perfect final tune-up for the freestyle world championships which began Tuesday in Sierra Nevada, Spain.

After his travel ban defeat in the 9th Circuit Court, Trump considers a ‘brand new order’ https://briefnews.eu/after-his-travel-ban-defeat-in-the-9th-circuit-court-trump-considers-a-brand-new-order/ https://briefnews.eu/after-his-travel-ban-defeat-in-the-9th-circuit-court-trump-considers-a-brand-new-order/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2017 23:33:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/after-his-travel-ban-defeat-in-the-9th-circuit-court-trump-considers-a-brand-new-order/ trump executive orderEvan Vucci/AP

Seeking to regroup after a stinging legal defeat, President Donald Trump said Friday he is considering signing a “brand new order” after his refugee and immigration travel ban was halted in court.

“We will win that battle,” said Trump to reporters on Air Force One as he flew to Florida for the weekend.

“The unfortunate part is that it takes time statutorily, but we will win that battle,” Trump said according to a press pool report. “We also have a lot of other options, including just filing a brand new order.”

When asked specifically what changes would be made, Trump said, “New security measures. We have very, very strong vetting. I call it extreme vetting and we’re going very strong on security. We are going to have people coming to our country that want to be here for good reason.”

Trump also said that “in honor of the [Ninth Circuit] decision,” he would likely wait until next week a new measure. “Perhaps Monday or Tuesday,” he said.

Trump’s comments came a day after the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a restraining order on his original travel ban. The president has cast the order as crucial for national security.

“We’ll be doing things to continue to make our country safe,” Trump pledged at a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “It will happen rapidly. We will not allow people into our country who are looking to do harm to our people.”

The president’s comments were far more restrained than his angry reaction to last week’s initial court ruling blocking the travel ban. Trump took aim at both the “so-called judge” in that case and the ruling, which he called “ridiculous.”

Trump continued to conjure images of unspecified danger Friday, saying he had “learned tremendous things that you could only learn, frankly, if you were in a certain position, namely president. And there are tremendous threats to our country. We will not allow that to happen, I can tell you that. We will not allow that to happen.”

The 9th Circuit ruling represented a significant setback for Trump in just his third week in office. The appellate decision brushed aside arguments by the Justice Department that the president has the constitutional power to restrict entry to the United States and that the courts cannot second-guess his determination that such a step was needed to prevent terrorism.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer tweeted that Trump “ought to see the writing on the wall” and abandon the proposal. The New York Democrat called on the president to “roll up his sleeves” and come up with “a real, bipartisan plan to keep us safe.”

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California promised, “Democrats will continue to press for President Trump’s dangerous and unconstitutional ban to be withdrawn.” And Trump’s former presidential rival Hillary Clinton offered a terse response on Twitter, noting the unanimous vote: “3-0.”

Congress’ Republican leaders, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, declined to comment.

US District Judge James Robart in Seattle issued the temporary restraining order halting the ban after Washington state and Minnesota sued, leading to the federal government’s appeal.

The Trump administration has said the seven nations — Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — have raised terrorism concerns. The states have argued that the executive order unconstitutionally blocked entry based on religion and the travel ban harmed individuals, businesses and universities.

Trump and his aides frequently refer to a ruling by a federal judge in Boston who declined last week to extend a temporary injunction against Trump’s travel ban. In a separate federal ruling in Seattle, a different federal judge put the ban on hold nationwide; it is that judge’s decision that the White House has challenged.

“It’s a decision that we’ll win, in my opinion, very easily and, by the way, we won that decision in Boston,” Trump said.

A federal appeals court late Thursday upheld a lower court’s decision blocking the travel ban that was implemented under executive order by President Donald Trump two weeks ago.

The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals was reviewing a decision by US District Judge James L. Robart, who last week ruled against Trump’s executive order and imposed a nationwide temporary restraining order. In both the hearings before the 9th Circuit earlier this week, as well as before the lower district court, lawyers from the Department of Justice largely argued that the states of Washington and Minnesota had no standing to challenge the executive order and that it was well within the president’s right to set immigration policy. The 9th Circuit disagreed on both counts.

“There is no precedent to support this claimed unreviewability, which runs contrary to the fundamental structure of our constitutional democracy,” the appeals court concluded.
