Half a century ago, such a rocket would have been part of the initial exploratory missions into space that only the U.S. and the Soviet Union could muster. Now, SpaceX is one of a crowd of actors eyeing the skies, rather than the sea, for economic, security and scientific gains, armed with different stages of technology. The growth of a wide range of commercial and state entities in space has created an opportunity for international cooperation, but politics closer to the ground are threatening efforts to produce a peaceful, stable and secure outer space environment.
It’s the commercial sector — more than governments — leading the development of space technology, says Victoria Samson, the Secure World Foundation’s Washington office director. Businesses are “now the driver of most space applications,” and miniature satellites “are being deployed in orbit on behalf of universities, high schools and even middle schools,” resulting in what some have called the “democratization” of space, a Mitchell Institute policy paper published in December says. At the same time, more than 80 countries currently either own or operate a satellite, and because “the politics of space don’t occur in a vacuum,” as Samson says, tensions on Earth will be reflected in the skies above and beyond. Countries are recognizing the vulnerability and advantages of operating in space.
[China and Russia] are building those capabilities to challenge the United States of America, to challenge our allies and to change the balance of power in the world.
U.S. Air Force Gen. John Hyten
The U.S. is currently trying to navigate these challenges with Russia and China, says Henry Hertzfeld, research professor of space policy and international affairs at George Washington University. Russia and the U.S. have a history of cooperative space exploration that continues today. But because of America’s tensions on Earth with Russia and China — a more recent space power — the U.S. is convinced their emerging capabilities pose a threat. “[China and Russia] are building those capabilities to challenge the United States of America, to challenge our allies and to change the balance of power in the world,” U.S. Air Force Gen. John Hyten said at the 2017 Reagan National Defense Forum.
India and China are battling to try and sell low-cost space technology and satellite launch facilities to smaller developing nations, recognizing the economic benefits — and geopolitical clout — that this brings. India has launched 164 foreign satellites since July 2015 after launching just 45 over the previous 16 years. China is sweeping up contracts to launch satellites for South American and African nations, says Dublin-based space analyst and author Brian Harvey. And because the technology involved in launching satellites is also useful in shooting long-range missiles, the growing space programs of North Korea and Iran worry neighbors who may be more advanced in space technology — like South Korea and Israel.
“We believe Iran is refining its missile-launch capabilities under the garb of a space program, and that is something we are watching carefully,” says Isaac Ben-Israel, chairman of the Israel Space Agency.
Ironically, it was during the Cold War that the U.S. and the erstwhile Soviet Union signed up for what remains the marquee symbol of space cooperation, even as they each tried to edge ahead of the other — the USSR sending the first man into space, the U.S. the first man on the moon. The International Space Station (ISS), which NASA spokesperson Stephanie Schierholz calls the “crown jewel” of international cooperation, helps the two countries to maintain working research and personal relations. But, in the last few years, “the Russians are sometimes taking a hard line, almost a reflection of attitudes during the Cold War,” Hertzfeld says. “It’s not an open environment of close cooperation at the moment.”
China is more of an obstacle. Federal U.S. law prohibits NASA from working with the Chinese government on space issues, and China is largely excluded from the ISS. But that hasn’t stopped the country from carving out its own place in orbit. It created its own satellite navigation system called Beidou, landed for the first time on the moon in 2013 and demonstrated its anti-sat capability in 2007 by shooting down one of its own satellites.

The U.S. isn’t sitting idle. Last summer, President Donald Trump revived the National Space Council, which announced in a directive in December that NASA’s efforts will focus on sending an astronaut to the moon. It’s a stepping stone for eventually getting to Mars that the council hopes will create more options for international collaboration.
NASA’s Schierholz also says international efforts will be “absolutely essential” for more ambitious space efforts. “The acting NASA administrator, Robert Lightfoot, has actively said journeys to Mars will not be accomplished without everyone working together,” she says. Other groups, like the Second World Foundation and the U.N.’s Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, work to encourage peaceful uses of outer space. Even the U.S. and China moved toward collaboration when a SpaceX cargo craft carried a Chinese experiment to the ISS in June.
Hertzfeld says the nonviolent history of space exploration thus far, paired with the thought that making a mess in space hurts everyone, may allow mutual interests to rise above disagreements that could lead to conflict. But for much of that history, space was mostly just that — space. Now it’s crowded like never before, with no traffic cops to regulate.

A viral video has captured the moment a police dinghy in Australia was stalked by a huge great white shark.
Measuring at 4.5 metres long, the animal was longer than the inflatable raft itself and reportedly followed the boat for ten minutes.
It also circled the 5.7-metre fishing boat that it had been approaching in the water.
The police officers were carrying out drug tests and safety regulations on recreational boats in the water in South Australia when the incident occurred.
The men on the fishing boat spoke of their nervousness at the creature, later dubbed Noah.
Mark Oates, one of the passengers told ABC radio in Adelaide: “We kind of had thoughts of changing our Bonds [underwear] a couple of times.
“So we powered up and cruised out of there but it just kept following us for 10 minutes.”
He said that he warned the police officers to “back off a bit” due to the proximity of the shark.
Due to the shark being so close, it meant that “little fish” were caught by them that day.
They also avoided being breathalysed by the officers as the police avoided boarding the boat.
South Australia police took to Twitter after the scary event: “Police were concentrating on recreational boats and checking registration, licences and safety equipment along with alcohol and drug-testing operators when they were paid a visit by one of the locals.
“Noah wasn’t keen on being breath tested and our Water Operations Unit officers were happy to oblige!”
The shark was not allowed to be interred with due to Australian laws.
They are listed as “vulnerable” and are not allowed to be harmed unless granted in exceptional circumstances.
There are thought to be as many as 12,800 great white sharks surrounding the coastlines of Australia, according to national science body CSIRO.
A great white shark in South Africa came dangerously close to a diver who was filming underwater.
The creature can be seen flashing its teeth during filming.
Suddenly it heads straight to the cameraman and comes within inches.
At the last minute, it swerves away and swims in another direction.
The video makes for a nerve-wracking watch.

Google Maps crop circles suggest we have strong alien proof, pointing to their presence on the planet earth.
A Google Earth satellite image, taken from space, pictures a spooky pattern of crop circles etched into a field – were these crop circles left by aliens?
The concentric crop circles, spotted in New Castle, Colorado, US, closely resemble those said to be proof of extraterrestrial beings in areas such as Stonehenge.
In the spooky image, no other signs of human life such as houses can be seen – and this is exactly the kind of deserted place secretive aliens might choose to make their mark.
New Castle is a mountainous region, which would offer aliens many hiding places, and a site to park their UFO, if they were looking to explore.
The number of crop circle sightings have increased by a lot since the 1970s, suggesting there is more and more possibility of alien presence on earth.
A crop circle, also known as a crop formation, is a pattern made when field crops are flattened to leave a shape in the ground.
They are typically formed of multiple concentric circles, but can vary in size and shape.
Since the 1980s, many have believed crop circles are proof of paranormal activity of aliens on earth.
Crop circles have been found near the ancient sites of Stonehenge, suggesting a spooky connection with another world.
There are a number of theories on why aliens leave crop circles on earth.
One leading crop circles theory is by Dr Horace Drew, who holds a PhD in Chemistry.
He said crop circles left by aliens may show “images of the future” which the extra terrestrials wish to communicate to the human race.
This theory was announced during a meeting at the UFO & Paranormal Research Society of Australia.
Another Google Maps street view alien mystery was recently revealed in the Nevada desert.
Tonopah Test Range, known as Area 45, is located in this area – a mysterious site owned by the US government.
Alien conspiracy theorist found a crop circle there, and have speculated it could be the work of aliens.
Jose Mourinho was furious after Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The United boss accused Pep Guardiola’s side of getting all the decisions and took offence to the manner in which City celebrated their win.
Things boiled over in the tunnel after the final whistle, leading to a scrap between both sets of players.
Mourinho has since suggested it was all due to a “diversity” in opinions between the two sides and would not discuss the matter further.
However, former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has jokingly claimed there was more to the United boss’ words than meets the eye, suggesting he was slyly having a pop at City.
“Jose saying ‘diversity’ – are we sure?” Keys tweeted.
“Broken up – the way he’s delivering it – it sounds more like ‘diver-City’. Listen again.”
Mourinho had accused City of going to ground easy in the build-up to Sunday’s derby.
The Tweet sparked a response from fans who began to delve a little deeper into Keys’ Mourinho conspiracy theory.
“If he was he’d have a point. Raheem Sterling could teach Ashley Young a thing or two, and that’s saying something!” one fan replied.
“Not only cheating by diving, but cheating with fouls to stop counters,” another added.
“Refs need to catch up – when employed as a clear strategy, should be punished as consistently as taking off a shirt to celebrate.”
However, many were having none of it and were clearly not onboard with Keys’ theory.
“My good lord, when you think you’ve seen it all,” one fan wrote.
“What does it sound like if you play it backwards at half speed?” another joked.
“You can legitimately criticise Mourinho for many things but give him a break on this, he is a non native speaker after all,” a third added.
Speaking about United’s post-match scuffle with City, Mourinho said: “The only thing I can say is that for me it was just a question of diversity.
“A diversity in behaviours, diversity in education, just that and nothing more than that.”

The Devil’s Eight is a boss-centric game where players can’t simply grind their way up to defeat their foes, but instead must hone their skills in order to advance. On top of these invigorating battles, bosses will have their own design, as well as music that works in tandem with their attacks, giving each circle of Hell a different feel than the last.
In The Devil’s Eight, you are completely stripped of offensive capabilities and left with only your shield. The battles take place on a circular platform – giving players little room for error when dodging attacks. You’ll have to observe how the boss attacks you for the opportunities to present a reversal – all while keeping yourself alive. Your shield has a defensive ability to reflect an attack back at the boss, but be careful of your timing or you’ll end up on the receiving end of some pain. Luckily, bosses seem to follow the rhythm of the music, giving players a good indicator on when they’ll need to protect themselves.
One of the biggest draws to The Devil’s Eight is the audio-visual experience players will be able to enjoy during tense battles. Players will battle bosses like Lust, a woman-like figure dancing with a man-like figure dancing on the opposite side, all while playing a catchy electronic-track. These types of catered battles require practice (and a well-tuned ear), but will unveil backstories as you defeat them, shedding light on dark pasts and pain.
If you’re looking to test your skills and enjoy an electronic soundtrack with themed-bosses, keep an eye on The Devil’s Eight.
The Devil’s Eight will be launching a Kickstarter campaign on September 12, 2017. You can follow the developer’s on Twitter for updates as well as their site here.

Hair-raising footage captured the moment a great white shark measuring some 16 feet in length gave a fisherman and his son the fright of their lives.
Craig Hudson was out fishing with his 10-year-old child off the coast of Busselton in Western Australia.
When the monster shark started to circle their boat, Craig started filming.
Craig could be heard saying: “I’m shaking right now boy, that thing is massive. Probably bigger than the boat, look at him.”
The shark’s fin could be spotted first, before it swam directly towards the boat and its whole body emerged just underneath the surface of the water.
Craig said: “Oh s***, alright we’re getting a bit close now.”
His son asked him questions about what the shark planned to do with them as he begged his father to move the boat on.
Already in the process of trying to get away from the huge predator, Craig said: “He’s probably about 16 foot… I can’t even keep the bloody camera still I’m shaking that much.”
The extremely close encounter has thoroughly spooked viewers since the video was shared online.
One YouTube user commented: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat…”
Another shared: “I would be swearing too if I was out that deep and there was a shark that big coming that close to the boat”.
Western Australia is well known for shark sightings, which are believed to be on the rise.
Just last month 17-year-old surfer Laetitia Brouwer died after a shark attacked her at Wylie Bay.
There have been 15 fatal shark attacks in the Australian state since 2000, with Laetitia’s death the third fatality in the area in less than a year.
Marc Payne – a seasoned abalone diver in Esperance – said the number of great white sharks in the area had grown.
He said: “I’ve had quite an increase in interactions with white sharks of around about 200 per cent in the past three decades.”
