Nadal continues his Rogers Cup campaign tonight (1am UK time) with a quarter-final tie against sixth seed Marin Cilic.

The World No 1 has seen off Stan Wawrinka and Benoit Paire as he bids for his fourth success and first since 2013 in Toronto.

Nadal is looking to bounce back from losing the semi-finals at Wimbledon last month while the 17-time Grand Slam champion can also move further ahead of rival Roger Federer in the ATP standings with a strong run in the Canadian tournament.

Cilic has seen off compatriot Borna Coric and Diego Schwartzman and looked in strong form having won 12 of his last 14 matches.

Nadal has won five of his seven meetings with Cilic with the Croatian having taken a victory by virtue of Nadal’s injury-enforced retirement in the Australian Open quarter-finals back in January.

The 31-year-old Spaniard has lost just three matches since returning from injury at the Davis Cup in April having stormed to four of an available six titles across the clay and grass seasons.

Cilic is looking to reach the semi-finals for the first time ever as he targets a first title since the 2016 Cincinnati Masters and Nadal has acknowledged he must be at his best.

“The first thing that I need to do well is play my best tennis,” Nadal said previewing his contest with Cilic.

“Without playing well it will be impossible.

“Quarter-finals after two good victories, tomorrow is the day to play a little bit better and that’s what I’m going to try.”

But how can you watch as Nadal bids to reach the final four for the first time since he last won the tournament?

Today’s play gets underway at 4pm on Sky Sports Arena – but Nadal and Cilic are not due on court until at least 11am (BST) following the other quarter-final between Robin Haase and Karen Khachanov.

Kevin Anderson and Stefans Tsitsipas have already booked their places in the semis, with the Greek having downed defending champion Alexander Zverev after eliminating Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic.

Roger Federer won his 20th Grand Slam after victory over Marin Cilic

Federer eventually extended his Grand Slam record in the men’s game after an incredible three-hour battle on the Rod Laver court as it took five sets and some stunning changes of momentum.

Cilic fought bravely but Roger Federer was just too good in the end and won 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

World No 2 Federer came into he match hot favourite having not dropped a set on the way to the final and after beating Cilic in the Wimbledon final last year.

And he surged to an early lead in comfortable fashion before Cilic rounded to make a game of it.

Federer simply blew Cilic away in the first set and looked on course for a straight-set victory but things swung round in the second set.

Cilic took it to a tie break and managed to get level in the match and make it a contest.

Federer then swarmed forward and won the third without much trouble before Cilic managed to get on top again.

But that was the end of the fight and Federer roared home in the final set to make it 20 Grand Slam titles and a sixth Australian Open title.

“I’m so happy, it’s unbelievable,” Federer said on court afterwards.

“It’s been a long time waiting for this final. It’s easier in the afternoon, but when it’s at night you think about it all day. I’m happy it’s over now. It’s a dream come true and the fairytale continues.

“After the year I had last year, it’s incredible.”

The 36-year-old, the second oldest man to win a slam title behind Ken Rosewall, moves four clear again of Rafael Nadal in terms of overall titles and is only three behind Serena Williams and four adrift of all-time record holder Margaret Court.

The crunch moment of the match came in the opening game of the decider. Playing at his peak, Cilic overpowered Federer from the baseline but the second seed withstood the pressure to save two break points.

A successful HawkEye challenge on a Cilic second serve helped him break in the next game and another break for 5-1 left him serving for the title. He needed only one match point, with Cilic netting a backhand return.

The Croatian appealed to HawkEye but the serve just clipped the line.

“First of all congrats to Roger and his team,” Cilic said, who will move up to No 3 in the world tomorrow.

“It’s amazing what he does year after year. All the best for 2018.

“It was an amazing journey for me. It could have been the best two weeks of my life. I had the chance at the beginning of the fifth but he played a great match.

“My team have been unbelievable for the last two weeks. We started this year amazingly well and hopefully we can reach more finals and lift more trophies!”

Controversially, the roof was shut on Rod Laver Arena, with the tournament referee using his discretion to implement the extreme heat policy even though it was an evening match and the temperature was not at the 40C threshold.

The combination of heat and humidity arguably made conditions more brutal than when the temperature was hotter earlier in the tournament and the referee may have had the fate of women’s runner-up Simona Halep in mind.

The women’s final was played in similar conditions, although not quite as hot, and ESPN showed a picture of Halep in hospital on a drip on Saturday night, apparently suffering from dehydration after her gruelling battle with Caroline Wozniacki.

The decision certainly seemed to play into Federer’s hands. If the Swiss is great outdoors, he is the master indoors, suffocating opponents with his pace of play.

Cilic certainly looked like he needed space to breathe as he dumped a smash into the bottom of the net to drop serve in the opening game and it got worse from there until he composed himself to hold in the fifth game.

Although the first set was gone, the last couple of games at least allowed the 29-year-old to get a foothold, and it was he who eventually claimed a second set that saw both men have chances.

Cilic looked like he might have missed his opportunity when he netted a weak backhand on set point at 5-4 but he made up for it with a terrific tie-break, his improvement in the match demonstrated by the rock solid smash that clinched it.

He was the better player at the start of the third set, too, but Federer found his level again to take it and looked poised to cruise over the line at 3-1 in the fourth.

However, Federer was struggling to find a first serve and Cilic began to crush the second one with his forehand. The Croatian engineered an unlikely turnaround by winning five straight games to force a decider.

He piled the pressure on at the start of the fifth, overpowering Federer from the baseline, but the 36-year-old held firm to save two break points. And with that Cilic’s window of opportunity shut.

Why was the roof closed? Cilic tees off https://briefnews.eu/why-was-the-roof-closed-cilic-tees-off/ https://briefnews.eu/why-was-the-roof-closed-cilic-tees-off/#respond Sun, 28 Jan 2018 13:46:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-was-the-roof-closed-cilic-tees-off/ MARIN Cilic has revealed he was taken by surprise by the Australian Open’s decision to close the roof for the men’s final — a move condemned by former grand slam champions such as Pat Cash.

Determined not to apportion blame for a harrowing five-set loss to Roger Federer to the changed conditions, Cilic said it was “very difficult” to adapt.

“Throughout the tournament I played all my matches outdoors, also preparing a hot day, 38 degrees.” he said.

“Then first match for the final to play with the roof closed, it’s difficult.

“I have to say that decision could it have been different.

“I think that it was just little bit difficult to adjust, especially the beginning of the match. With the roof closed, it was way, way cooler than I expected.

“That was very, very difficult, especially for the final to, you know, be in that kind of a situation.”

Cilic claimed officials didn’t ask him for his views on whether the final should be decided indoors despite the Open being an outdoor event.

“Well, no, they didn’t ask me. They just came to me to tell me that they are thinking about decision, and they going to make the final decision just around 7pm, just slightly before the match,” he said.

“I didn’t mind to have roof closed, but it was a huge difference in temperature from having outside 38c, then when you came in, it was like 23, 4, I don’t know. It was way cooler than I expected.”

Cilic struggled with timing issues from the start as Federer, one of the most efficient players indoors in the history of the game, threatened to bolt.

“Just looking at my own side, I didn’t feel those conditions before,” Cilic said.

“I had a slow start in the match, losing straightaway my two service games, then catching up most of the time … I’m saying it was very different than what we’ve played outdoor.

“But looking overall, I’m really pleased with the performance. Played great tennis over these two weeks.

“I had tough matches, tough opponents, beating Rafa (Nadal), reaching here a final, which is definitely amazing. Looking at my own game, I think I improved a lot.

“I’m playing great tennis. That’s really exciting for me for this 2018.”

Cilic lamented not taking any of the four break points he held in the opening game of the fifth set, before Federer raced away.

“It was a big battle, five sets. I managed to turn it around. In the fourth set, it was a big boost for me with the game that I played on 3-2 when he was serving,” he said.

“Then that lifted me a lot up. I started to play great tennis.

“I was hitting the ball great. I was just playing phenomenal. Then first game of the fifth set was more or less crucial at the end with having those four, I believe, break points that I didn’t convert.

“Just a little bit tougher game, my service game next game. Just it ran away from me.”

Cilic said Federer remains the benchmark for excellence, outlining what makes the Swiss so great.

“I would say first the passion to compete, season after season, especially at this high level,” he said of Federer.

“Then also being able to challenge himself first physically and then mentally, as well, to be at the top almost every single week.

“To work hard and improve, those things we know he’s doing really well.

“We know he has the level. With his game style, it’s very all-around. In those moments, obviously physical abilities come into play with his age, but also mentally that he’s able to challenge himself and continue with his progress.”

Cilic is confident he can build further on his rise today to No 3.

“My ultimate goal is to reach No 1. That’s my goal,” he said.

“That’s what I’m working for. Even in these last one or two years, the progress that I did is big. Last year I improved a lot in different areas.

“Now in these last couple months, I improved even more. So that gives me big confidence.

“Beating here Rafa — obviously he retired, but it was great match as well. Then playing with Roger head-to-head, a great match. This is giving me big confidence for going forward.

“No 3 feels and looks amazing, especially behind them as well. But I know how difficult it is, knowing as well Novak and Andy and many other guys had a tough last season.

“For me it’s a great time that I improved and that I am continuing to improve. Big time ahead for me.”

Australian Open: John McEnroe warns Marin Cilic about Roger Federer with HILARIOUS fable https://briefnews.eu/australian-open-john-mcenroe-warns-marin-cilic-about-roger-federer-with-hilarious-fable/ https://briefnews.eu/australian-open-john-mcenroe-warns-marin-cilic-about-roger-federer-with-hilarious-fable/#respond Sun, 28 Jan 2018 02:49:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/australian-open-john-mcenroe-warns-marin-cilic-about-roger-federer-with-hilarious-fable/

Federer is aiming to win his 20th Grand Slam title later today after reaching a record seventh Australian Open final.

In order to do so, he will have to overcome Cilic who has already beaten world No 1 Rafael Nadal this tournament.

Federer and Cilic have met nine times throughout their professional careers, with the latter winning just one back in the 2014 US Open.

However, McEnroe opted to look back at one of the more recent encounters between the pair.

This will be a repeat of the 2017 Wimbledon final when Federer lifted his eighth SW19 title.

Cilic broke down in tears on court as blisters on his feet prevented him from giving the 36-year-old a fierce match.

“A little while ago, a goat (G.O.A.T) named Roger was happily browsing in an English grass field,” McEnroe said on Eurosport.

“Then came a tall Croatian shepherd who wanted to play with the animal.

“But Roger the GOAT made the shepherd run so much that it took the skin off his feet. He started crying uncontrollably.

“Months later, Roger the GOAT had moved to the Australian bush. This time a Korean whizz-kid thought that he could outsmart the animal.

“He too ran miles before his feet literally burnt under him.

“Hidden behind a tree, the Croatian shepherd was lurking in the shadow, fuelled by a desire for revenge.

“Don’t mess with Roger the GOAT, he has the power to give you blisters, again. That’s the moral of the story.”

Marin Cilic is a Croatian professional tennis player who is taking on Rodger Federer in the Australian Open 2018 tomorrow.

The 29-year-old player, who now lives in Monte Carlo, Monaco, won the 2014 US Open.

He also beat Scottish player Andy Murray in the fourth round of the 2009 US Open, when Murray was ranked second best player in the world.

Originally from Krstine, Međugorje, a town in Bosnia & Herzegovina, and is currently dating Kristina Milković, a psychology graduate from Croatia.

What is Marin Cilic’s net worth?

The Net Worth Portal states that the tennis player is worth a whopping $ 17.2 million, around £12m.

He has earned around $ 10m or £7m by winning tournaments, and he also earns cash from endorsements with brands such as Line Head and Li-Ning.

Li-Ning is a Chinese athletic apparel company, and the Croatian signed a five-year deal with the brand.

Marin Cilic and Roger Federer will play tomorrow, but how much is Cilic’s competitor worth?

Roger Federer’s net worth is said to be $ 420 million (£304 million), according to Net Worth Post.

The 36-year-old Swiss tennis professional is ranked number two in the world in men’s singles tennis, according to the Association of Tennis Professionals.

He is married and has four children, comprised of two sets of twins.

He is said to have a huge fortune, made up of both his tennis earnings and endorsement deals. He earns £27,600 in just over five hours, according to one calculation.

Roger Federer has an astonishingly high net worth, as one of the world’s highest-earning tennis players.

Roger Federer stats show that the Swiss tennis player is likely to beat against the Croatian pro.

Federer beat Cilic 6-7(5) 6-4 6-1 at the ATP World Tour Finals in London last November.

The pair were on holiday in the off-season with their families when it emerged they were both in the same place.

Cilic and Federer knew each other were there but held off contacting one another.

But the Croat broke the silence by sending Federer a text message asking him if he’d like to practise – and it was an offer he duly took up.

Federer said: “I was there first, I think, and he arrived later on the island. I was told that Marin was coming. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cool. It’s not that they warned me another tennis player is coming. It’s all good, we’re fine’.

“When he arrived, I didn’t want to bother him. He didn’t want to bother me. After two days, he wrote to me: ‘I’m here, too, in case you want to catch up and stuff, let me know’.

“I was like, ‘Sure, let me know if you want to hit’.

“He was eager to hit because it’s good to stay in the rhythm for both of us. We also met up later for drinks, met his fiancée.

“We had cake together, my whole family and him. We had a good time. It’s not like we’re hanging out all the time, but our paths crossed a few times. We actually went to practice twice for 45 minutes.

“It’s great fun. No coaches, no nothing, just the two of us on the court hitting balls. It was just nice and laid back.

“To get to know the man behind the tennis player, I guess, even though I got to know him better through the Laver Cup and so forth.”

Edmund had been expected to last just a day in the tournament after he was drawn against No 11 seed Kevin Anderson.

But Britain’s sole representative in the men’s singles – Andy Murray had hip surgery a week before the Australian Open – knocked out the South African in five sets before going on the run of his life to reach the last four, including a famous quarter-final victory of world No 3 Grigor Dimitrov.

Now he faces Cilic, who had already beaten one Spaniard in Pablo Carreno Busta when he came up against Rafael Nadal in the quarters.

The No 1 seed took the lead twice but when the Croatian forced a deciding set, Nadal decided to call it quits with a leg injury while trailing 2-0 in the fifth.

So can Edmund upset the odds one more time? Express Sport brings you all the action from Melbourne.

Kyle Edmund vs Marin Cilic LIVE

(* denotes next to serve)

*Edmund 2-5 Cilic

9am: First blood Cilic. The Croatian holds to love and follows it with a strong return game, forcing two break points only one of which he is able to save.

8.55am: Not many nerves but Edmund accidentally challenges a call when trying to get the ballboy to bring his towel – umpire manages to allow it to be cancelled though!

Brilliant defence from the Brit at 30-30 on his own serve. Djokovic-esque slides into the ball and the like before Cilic finally bangs one wide. Sensational stuff.

8.45am: Dramatic start. Edmund immediately forces two break points as Cilic starts a little tight, but the Croatian finds two big serves to save them and eventually holds.

On his own serve, Edmund is called for an early foot fault. He’s baffled and confronts the umpire about it. Nothing doing (obviously) and he heads back to the baseline, winning the point with his second serve. He holds too and both players are on the board.

8.37am: Here we go. I’m legitimately nervous. I thought this was over when Murray pulled out…

8.30am: Coin toss done. Cilic won it (tails DID fail for Kyle) and will serve first. The players are knocking up and we are a couple of minutes away.

8.20am: Kyle Edmund had an earlier hit than usual today, apparently so he could get the chance to play on Rod Laver Arena before the sessions started there.

“I’ve got a late match and we had the option of hitting on an outside court but I’ve played one match here and I just thought it would be nice to hit again on here and feel the environment. It’s now waiting, refuelling and getting ready for tonight.”

We’re all waiting and refueling Kyle. Not long now…

7.40am: At last! World No 1 Simona Halep is through to the final. She wins the final set 9-7 to seal a fine match in two hours, 22 minutes. Remarkable stuff.

So I reckon that means we should be looking at a 7.40pm start time locally in Melbourne for the boys – that’s 8.40am over here, so you’ve got time for a coffee and a bagel.

7.30am: Hands up if you predicted this semi-final? Nope, me neither. I have instructed my bookies to find someone who bet on Edmund to win the whole thing – but no-one has turned up so far.

Now though, the Brit is as short as 10/1 to win his next two matches and seal a maiden Grand Slam title. I would usually say he hasn’t a hope but this week, anything is possible.

Along with Cilic, Edmund is due out on court in about 30 minutes. However, Halep and Kerber are at 7-7 in the third and still going, meaning the men’s semi looks to be delayed by at least 15 minutes.

Nadal had taken the first set to leave Cilic a 10/1 outsider to come from behind and knock out the world No 1.

But the Croatian rallied to take the second before losing an agonisingly tight third-set tie-break in which both men lost their serve repeatedly.

However, Cilic hung tough and broke early in the fourth, at which point Nadal called for the trainer.

He had three minutes of treatment on his right leg above the knee and was given tablets to deal with the pain – but he still could not stop Cilic forcing a fifth and deciding set.

And after another treatment session, the No 1 seed was broken again and he promptly retired, much to the disappointment of a packed Rod Laver Arena.

Nadal confirmed afterwards that the problem was not with his troublesome knee or with his hip, but that it was a muscular injury that had initially felt “tired” in the third set before giving way in the fourth.

“It is difficult to know exactly what it is now,” Nadal said.

“It is difficult to know exactly the muscle. Just happened minutes ago.

Nadal had already said he would not play in Spain’s Davis Cup tie with Britain (February 2-4) and will now prioritise the top clay-court tournaments in Barcelona, Madrid, Monte Carlo and Rome ahead of defending his French Open crown.

Rafael Nadal was forced to retire nearly four hours into the match

But he did call on the ATP Tour to reconsider the schedule and surfaces on which they play after joining Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori in the ranks of men’s tennis’ walking wounded.

“Somebody who is running the tour should think little bit about what’s going on,” Nadal added.

“Too many people getting injured. I don’t know if they have to think a little bit about the health of the players.

“Not for now that we are playing, but there is life after tennis.

“I don’t know if we keep playing in this very, very hard surfaces what’s going to happen in the future with our lives.”

Cilic meanwhile would not be drawn on whether he wanted to see changes, as many professionals have called for in recent months.

“The calendar is there for so many years,” Cilic said.

“Just in this last year, obviously beginning of this one, we see a lot of top guys that are injured.

“In the end it’s on all of us to try to take care of our bodies, to try to pick the right schedule, to listen to our body, how it feels.

“I completely understand there are a lot of tournaments that we play, mandatory tournaments.

“In my own perspective, we are all picking our own schedule.

“It’s tough to say, ‘Okay, we going to take out two months of the season’ cut that many tournaments, because tennis is such a global sport.

“Everywhere we play people enjoy it. I think tennis is getting more and more popular, which we really want also.”

Cilic will play unseeded Kyle Edmund in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, a stage of the Melbourne tournament the Croatian last reached in 2010, when he lost to another Brit – Andy Murray – in four sets.

Cilic and Edmund will clash for a place in the final at 8.30am UK time on Thursday morning.

Nadal’s progress through the draw had been serene until he faced Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round, the plucky Argentinian taking the second set, the first time the No 1 seed had had his nose bloodied at the Australian Open this year.

But the Spaniard battled through the match, spending nearly four hours on court, a test he said he needed to prove to himself his knee was up to the challenge of a long match.

Cilic also dropped a set in the previous round, losing a first-set tie-break to No 10 seed Pablo Carreno Busta, but then finding his form to win through in four.

The Croatian reached the Wimbledon final and hit a career-high No 4 in the world in a stellar 2017 – he will now look to return to the last four in Australia for the first time in eight years.

Express Sport will bring you all the latest action from Melbourne as it happens.

Rafael Nadal vs Marin Cilic LIVE

(* denotes next to serve)

*Nadal 6-3, 3-6 Cilic

9.55am: What a turnaround. Cilic wins four games on the spin to take the second set and level things up. Getting the unforced error count down has been a part of it, but also hanging tough with Nadal. The Spaniard hit 17 winners in the opening set – there were just seven to Cilic’s 16.

9.45am: Hello? Cilic is working so very hard and he immediately breaks back and holds to love. A real power play from Cilic!

9.35am: Bit of an implosion from Cilic, perhaps feeling the relentless pressure of Nadal. The Croatian double-faults and finds himself two break points, only to be warned for a time violation. He is incredulous, and promptly double-faults again to lose the game. Nadal right in the driving seat now.

Cilic is still talking to the umpire about that time violation.

9.20am: Cilic started this match as a 3/1 underdog, and he’s now out to 10/1 after losing that first set. And you can see why as Nadal forces his first break point of the second set, jumping all over a mis-hit from Cilic to make it 30-40. The taller man saves it at the net and goes on to find a hold but it is not easy work for the world No 6 at the moment.

9am: Nadal has to save a break point but after he does, he makes more inroads into the Cilic serve, going 0-40 up in a matter of moments. He makes the second chance count but in the next game Cilic saves the first set point with a classic forehand winner and the second by stepping into the court and battering a backhand.

But Nadal’s hitting is too much and he finds a brilliant forehand winner to take the set after 54 minutes.

8.45am: A gruelling service hold for Cilic, who has to save five break points in the sixth game of the match. The Croatian manages it though, which should give him some confidence. Nadal yet to hit top gear but he is about to depress the clutch and do so I think…

8.30am: Intriguing start. Nadal is employing his “stand three miles behind the baseline on first serve” tactic which tends to force big servers forward – but Cilic hates it at the net and seems happy to set back. That said, shorter points will favour the Croatian and the big forehand his starting to fire. On serve after four games though.

8.15am: Play is underway on Rod Laver Arena and Nadal will serve first.

8am: The players are about to head out on court so we are moments away. In terms of British hopes, I think we want a six-hour five-setter don’t we? Yes, I think we do.

7.40am: Kyle. Edmund. That’s probably all you’ve been able to think about waking up this morning. He has knocked out Grigor Dimitrov in four sets and is into a first ever Grand Slam semi-final. That really is a heck of a story.

The winner of this match will be his opponent, and it is an intriguing match-up. When these two met here in the last 16 seven years ago, Nadal romped through in straight sets, and he hasn’t lost to the Croatian since, with four more wins and just one set lost.

Nadal favourite? Yes. Should he cruise through? Perhaps not. 8am start scheduled here.
