  • Labour will lose a big chunk of support if it doesn’t oppose Brexit.
  • If there was an election before Brexit, just 19% of people would vote for Labour if it doesn’t oppose Britain’s EU exit, while the Conservatives would be 9 percentage points ahead, a YouGov poll has found.
  • Support for the anti-Brexit Lib Dems would jump to 17%.
  • However, Labour would be much closer to the Tories and way ahead of the Lib Dems if it opposed Brexit.
  • Jeremy Corbyn is under increasing pressure from Labour members to stand against Brexit.

LONDON — The Labour Party will haemorrhage voters to the Liberal Democrats if it doesn’t oppose Brexit, a poll has found, in the latest sign that Jeremy Corbyn’s party relies heavily on support from passionate pro-Europeans.

The slimy lump of coagulated fat, oil, wet wipes, diapers, and so forth took several weeks to dismantle via a combination of pickaxes, high-pressure hoses and large suctions tubes.

A few fragments of the coagulated ‘berg survived, however, and have been put on display in the Museum of London in all their grossness.

Business Insider took a trip to the exhibition — here’s what we found.

Here’s the fatberg in its natural habitat, a Victorian sewage pipe under Whitechapel Road, just east of central London.

Thames Water

Google Maps/Business Insider

The original fatberg measured 250m and had snarled up a large part of the waste infrastructure along a major road in London.

As Business Insider wrote at the time, it took around three weeks for the team of eight Thames Water employees to remove the thing.

But before they disposed of it all, the Museum of London managed to register a request to preserve part of the fatberg, and was granted bags of preserved gloop.

Here’s what they turned it into — a dried-out, solid, but still pretty gross chunk of sludge.

The toxic fatberg came to the museum in sealed containers, and had to be treated before it could go on display.

Eventually, the museum decided to air-dry the fatberg chunks preserve it for as long as possible, and give people the best view.

An earlier proposal to pickle the fatberg was ultimately not approved.

An investigation has been launched after an access panel on the wing of a Boeing 747 used by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe fell off during flight.

Japan’s Air Self Defense Force (ASDF) confirmed the incident happened during a flight from Tokyo to Hokkaido, Thursday. The part, which is about the size of a laptop computer and provides access to an area connecting the engines to the right wing of the plane, has not yet been found.

“There was no sign of it on the runways so it’s going to be very difficult to locate,” a spokesman for the ASDF said in a statement, cited by Reuters. ANN News in Japan broadcast images of the plane and its missing part on Thursday.

Two jumbo jets carrying Abe and other government officials set off from Tokyo on Friday ahead of a six-day trip to Eastern Europe. The Japanese PM was reportedly not aboard the plane that lost its panel.

The lost panel follows similar incidents involving US-made aircraft in Okinawa, the southern island prefecture home to several US military bases, in recent weeks.

On Wednesday, US Defense Secretary James Mattis called his Japanese counterpart, Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera, to personally apologize for a series of blunders beginning last month when the window of a military helicopter fell from its frame during a flight and landed in a school sports field. Around 60 students were playing in the area at the time, according to Japan Times.

“This is a regrettable incident and we apologize for any anxiety it has caused the community,” the Marine Corps said in a statement at the time.

On Monday, a US AH1 attack helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing on the premises of a hotel after a warning light indicated a problem with the tail rotor. On the same day, a heavy-lift helicopter was sent to the eastern coast of Ikeijima Island, near Okinawa, to pick up another military helicopter that was disabled on a beach. Questioned about the incidents, Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga said the US military should “feel ashamed of their inability to be in control of what they are doing.”

A huge chunk of men who rule corporate America would prefer if everyone focused less on diversity https://briefnews.eu/a-huge-chunk-of-men-who-rule-corporate-america-would-prefer-if-everyone-focused-less-on-diversity/ https://briefnews.eu/a-huge-chunk-of-men-who-rule-corporate-america-would-prefer-if-everyone-focused-less-on-diversity/#respond Sat, 21 Oct 2017 12:22:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-huge-chunk-of-men-who-rule-corporate-america-would-prefer-if-everyone-focused-less-on-diversity/ Mad MenMad Men / Facebook

Corporate America is still run by mostly white, old men. According to a new survey, they’re not too bothered about the lack of diversity.

Nearly a third of the men surveyed recently by PwC would prefer if less attention was paid to diversity. Thirty-one percent of men said there is too much focus on it, compared to 4% of women.

The survey interviewed 866 US public company board members, of which 14% were women – a representative cross section, according to PwC.

Among other findings:

  • When asked whether gender diversity was “very important,” only 35% of men said so versus 68% of women.
  • When asked whether racial diversity was “very important,” only 20% of men said so, compared to 42% of women.
  • Eighty percent of women said that increasing diversity was happening too slowly, compared to 33% of men.

On every question asked about the importance of diversity, women were far more likely to say that different types of diversity (by age, socioeconomic class, race, etc.) are important. For instance, when it comes to racial diversity on boards, 74% of women but only 26% of men say it’s “very important.”  The chart below goes into the details.

A big reason for the disparity is that most of the people running these boards are older men who grew up in a different social climate, said Paula Loop, leader of the Governance Insights Center at PwC.

Only 4% of directors at S&P 500 boards are under age 50, and they’re overwhelmingly men, per the report.

“You’re seeing a lag in the environment these people worked in,” Loop told Business Insider. “They’re continuing to feel that it’s not missing from their board groups.”

One bright spot, according to Loop: men seem to have slightly improved their views on gender diversity since the survey last year. That might be due to pressure from institutional investors who have made gender diversity a hot topic, she said.

A chunk of code found in the Kronos bank-fraud malware originated more than six years before security researcher Marcus Hutchins is accused of developing the underlying code, a fellow security researcher said Friday.

The conclusion, reached in an analysis of Kronos published by security firm Malwarebytes, by no means proves or disproves federal prosecutors’ allegations that Hutchins wrote Kronos code and played a role in the sale of the malware. It does, however, clarify speculation over a Tweet from January 2015, in which MalwareTech—the online handle Hutchins used—complained that a complex piece of code he had published a month earlier had been added to an unnamed malware sample without his permission.

Shortly after his arrest in Las Vegas two weeks ago, the Tweet resurfaced, and almost immediately it generated speculation that the malware Hutchins was referring to was Kronos. An analysis of Kronos soon showed that one portion used an instruction that was identical to one included in the code Hutchins published in January 2015.

Two once-hot activist hedge funds have lost a big chunk of their assets https://briefnews.eu/two-once-hot-activist-hedge-funds-have-lost-a-big-chunk-of-their-assets/ https://briefnews.eu/two-once-hot-activist-hedge-funds-have-lost-a-big-chunk-of-their-assets/#respond Sat, 24 Jun 2017 11:32:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/two-once-hot-activist-hedge-funds-have-lost-a-big-chunk-of-their-assets/ Keith MeisterReuters/ Brendan McDermid

Keith Meister’s Corvex Management and Richard (Mick) McGuire III’s Marcato Capital Management, two once-hot activist hedge fund firms that bolted out of the gate during the post-financial crisis bull market, have lost a big chunk of their assets over the past year as some of their highest-profile activist plays have slipped into the red.

Meister and McGuire are the protégés of rival activists Carl Icahn and Bill Ackman. At his peak, Meister, the former Icahn lieutenant, owned $ 8.5 billion in U.S. equities at the end of the third quarter of 2015, according to Corvex’s filings with regulators. His most recent 13F, filed in mid-May, show his U.S. equity holdings at $ 3.6 billion —a 58 percent decline. While those numbers don’t tell the whole story, they are a proxy, as most of activists’ holdings are in equities.

Earlier this year, Corvex reported regulatory assets under management, which also includes leverage, of $ 7.4 billion at the end of 2016. Corvex had $ 5 billion in capital at the beginning of 2017, according to estimates by data provider Absolute Return, which said that was a 29 percent decline since January 2016.

With backing from Soros’ seeding platform, Meister launched Corvex in 2011 to much fanfare, doubling assets by 2013 with several early activist successes. But many of his activist plays have not performed well, particularly recently. His latest ones — oil and gas exploration company Energen Corp., telecommunications company CenturyLink, and streaming music service Pandora Media — are all trading lower than his average purchase price, according to his 13D filings.

Mick McGuirevia Bloomberg TV Pandora is the worst — it’s down 26 percent from the price Meister paid for his stake, which was disclosed in May of 2016. Overall, Meiser’s current activist plays are down about 15 percent by that measure, compared with a 6.78 percent gain for the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index during the respective time periods. Out of 14 activist plays in which he took a 5 percent stake or more, six are either trading lower than when he bought them, or did so when he sold out. Over time, however, his holdings still outperform the S&P 500 — but by just a little more than 1 percent. Meister declined to comment.

Marcato’s assets have fallen 50 percent, to $ 1 billion, according to a person familiar with the numbers. McGuire, a former partner at Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital Management, launched Marcato in 2010 with seeding from Blackstone and quickly took off, nearly doubling assets in 2013. Marcato’s decline is entirely from redemptions, largely from funds of funds, as the flagship fund is actually performing well. Although it lost 9.3 percent in 2015, it gained 9 percent last year. This year, the fund is up about 8 percent so far.

McGuire’s newest activist positions— in Deckers Outdoor Corp., which makes UGG boots and apparel, and Terex Corp., which manufactures cranes — have gained 44.45 percent and 67.45 percent, respectively, from his average purchase price, trouncing the S&P 500. But the attention has been on casual dining chain Buffalo Wild Wings, where he recently wrangled a board seat. So far, though, the position has been a loser. His stake is down almost 6 percent from his purchase cost of $ 138 per share.

In recent years, McGuire has been involved in a couple of other high-profile losers — auction house Sotheby’s International, which he exited with a 3.6 percent loss from his purchase price, and transactions processing company NCR, which had fallen 7 percent by the same measure when he left the board, then quickly sold out. Overall, however, his 12 activist plays’ gains have almost doubled the broader market, with an average gain of 30 percent.

McGuire declined to comment.

The FCC just sold a chunk of the wireless spectrum to T-Mobile https://briefnews.eu/the-fcc-just-sold-a-chunk-of-the-wireless-spectrum-to-t-mobile/ https://briefnews.eu/the-fcc-just-sold-a-chunk-of-the-wireless-spectrum-to-t-mobile/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2017 23:25:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-fcc-just-sold-a-chunk-of-the-wireless-spectrum-to-t-mobile/

The results are in. After a year-long process, the Federal Communications Commission today announced the conclusion of its first-ever broadcast incentive auction, naming T-Mobile, Dish, Comcast and US Cellular as the biggest winners.

T-Mobile threw down $ 8 billion to capture 45 percent of all low-band spectrum sold, meaning it now has the ability to provide service across the entire US and Puerto Rico. This doesn’t mean the carrier’s service will improve over night, but it does give T-Mobile the opportunity to blanket the entire nation in LTE coverage. Note the auction didn’t deal with the up-and-coming 5G spectrum, which is currently being gobbled up by AT&T.

The FCC raked in $ 19.8 billion in gross revenue for 70MHz of spectrum, so you could call the commission itself a winner, too.

But of course, the FCC doesn’t get to keep all of that cash. Roughly $ 7 billion raised in the auction will help pay down the national debt, and more than $ 10 billion will go to the 175 winning broadcasters participating in the FCC’s program to repurpose their airwaves for mobile carriers. For example, NBCUniversal earned $ 481.6 million by selling spectrum in Philadelphia, New York and Chicago. Meanwhile, NBC’s parent company, Comcast, ended up spending $ 1.7 billion to acquire mobile spectrum in the auction.

These sold stations will move to lower channels, be absorbed into other networks or disappear from the airwaves completely. An additional 957 non-winning stations will change channels in an effort to clear the airwaves for mobile use; the first group of stations will begin migrating on November 30th, 2018.

This mostly affects people who use over-the-air antennas, as they’ll have to re-scan their TV sets as the changes roll in. Cable and satellite TV providers should make any necessary changes for their customers. The FCC has set up an FAQ page for anyone wondering what the televised future holds.

“The conclusion of the world’s first incentive auction is a major milestone in the FCC’s long history as steward of the nation’s airwaves,” FCC chairman Ajit Pai said. “Consumers are the real beneficiaries, as broadcasters invest new resources in programming and service, and additional wireless spectrum opens the way to greater competition and innovation in the mobile broadband marketplace.”
