The former Labour MP, now a Liberal Democrat, told BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt that Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal does not solve the political impasse in the long term. But the BBC host challenged him on his party’s alternative solutions to the issue and pointed out they also do not resolve the debate in the long term. Mr Stayt said: “For some people, the argument you made there makes some sense – they are fed up with the process. “But I think the phrase you used a moment ago is that a ‘gangplank leads to nowhere’. “Now, tomorrow, if the vote goes against Boris Johnson who knows what will happen – is what some people would say. “That really is a vote into who knows what. Is there any evidence that the EU is ever going to offer a deal that is different from the one that we have now?” READ MORE: Farage reveals the only Brexit deal he would be willing to accept The Lib Dem Remainer replied: “They have offered a deal – if you want to use that terminology – they said you can stay in the single market and the customs union. “But it was this Conservative Government who said no to that. “What we do know is that Parliament has passed that Benn Act which safeguards the situation in the short term, which means we don’t just crash out. “And the Prime Minister, if there is no agreement that has been finalised by Parliament tomorrow, will have to send this letter and request an extension. “And Donald Tusk, who is the President of the European Council, is clear that that has not been ruled out. Lots of parliamentarians have good relations with other Governments in the EU.” But the BBC host interrupted Mr Umunna and rightly pointed out: “Yes, but that doesn’t get us anywhere! All that gets us is until Christmas.” It comes as Boris Johnson faces an uphill challenge in the Commons on Saturday with MPs on all sides of the opposition benches pledging to vote against his Brexit proposal. The DUP, which is crucial to the Prime Minister’s majority in Parliament, has vowed to vote against the deal on the issue of consent – or lack of – given to Northern Ireland over the future relationship with the EU. DON’T MISS: The Labour Party also vowed to vote against the deal, followed by the SNP and the Liberal Democrats. If the deal does not get through the Commons the Prime Minister will be forced to ask for an extension to the Article 50 process as dictated by the Benn Act. The extension will last until at least January 31, 2020, but it remains unclear whether the EU will grant it without any conditions attached to it. European Council Donald Tusk suggested that an extension could only be granted this time if attached to either a second Brexit referendum or a general election. Mr Umunna told the host he had answered his questions, but the presenter hit back: “No, you haven’t answered my question.” The guest replied: “I’ve answered your question. You may not like the answer Piers but the answer is a referenda are not the only way to determine things in this country, we also determine them by general election.” Mr Umunna went on to explain when he was a member of the Labour party, he voiced his opposition of their stance, before saying if people voted for the Lib Dems in a General Election, then another referendum wouldn’t be needed as the manifesto would clearly angle towards stopping Brexit. “People are fed up talking about Brexit,” the politician stated. Chuka Umunna left the Labour Party to join Change UK – The Independent Group for Change, before later stepping down to join the Liberal Democrats after the European elections. During a Brexit interview on Good Morning Britain, host Piers Morgan took a swipe at the Streatham MP for switching so quickly between parties. After being asked what he thought was going to happen in the political sphere, ahead of an attempt by rebel MPs try to take control of Parliament today, Mr Umunna said: “I think there will be an election. “I don’t see how you can govern with a majority of one if there is still a majority of one, so I think it is inevitable”. But, the ITV host delivered a quick swipe at the MP. He said: “And which party will you be representing?” Smirking, the Lib Dem MP replied: “My party, the Liberal Democrats, of course.” The pair both burst out laughing as the presenter quipped there would only be “one party left” for Mr Umunna to join – hinting at the Tories. READ MORE: Johnson’s secret Brexit showdown with Rebel Alliance THIS MORNING Ms Soubry told the BBC last month: “Chuka going to the Lib Dems, these are very heavy blows so soon. I am sorry, but you stick at something a bit longer than a couple of months. Especially when you have got had the courage to leave your own political party. “When you have worked with somebody from a different political party, and you thought, this person has got so much to offer. “I really believed this person is the future for our country. Quite a great double act I thought actually. “I believed in him. He was a major reason I left my political party. I believed in this new project. It was like, we had a big disappointment and he was gone. That was not the person I thought he was.” Some MPs who moved to Change UK also left after the poor European election results earlier this year. It comes as Boris Johnson delivered a speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street on Monday vowing to deliver Brexit by the end of October “come what may”. But, there have been suggestions Mr Johnson could try to call a snap election if MPs vote on Tuesday to block a no deal exit from the EU. The heated row began when ITV guest and Brexiteer MP Nadine Dorries said her constituents are calling for her to vote for the controversial Brexit deal, rather than support a no deal Brexit. The MP for Mid Bedfordshire told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “They are saying to me, ‘vote for this deal so we can have some certainty’. Families, workers, businesses – everybody just wants us to get on with this and vote.” But Mr Farage fired back and said: “Yes but fewer than one in five in the country want this deal.” Ms Dorries insisted Britain needs a new negotiating team for the next stage of Brexit talks as she outlined her support for Theresa May’s controversial Brexit deal. She warned: “If this deal does not go through I think there is a strong danger that we could end up in a snap general election and possibly with Theresa May leading it. “I think that is something that has changed in the last week and I think my colleagues need to get behind this today.” The heated exchange intensified when former Labour Party MP Chuka Umunna launched a furious attack on prominent Brexiteers for creating a political “mess” in Britain. Mr Umunna said: “The reason that we are in this mess – it is something for Nigel to talk about betrayal is that the architects of this chaos, the ones who campaigned for us to leave the European Union in the first place, we, in Parliament, have been trying to square the fantasy and mythical promises that they were making about what voting to Leave would mean for the UK and it has proved impossible to deliver.” He added: “If you look at the big problems we have got in this country, in my constituency we have got too many young people stabbing and killing each other. We have some of the most extreme social problems in the country. This vote, so far, has done absolutely nothing.” A huge row then erupted between the panel and ITV host Kate Garraway was forced to intervene and ask the pair to stop shouting over each other. An infuriated Mr Farage then fired back at the Remainer Independent MP. He blasted: “Let’s get it over with. Let’s leave and then we can get on with it. It’s very easy. what we promised on our side of the argument was independence. “We wanted to become an independent state and not having our laws made in Brussels, having our own courts and controlling our own borders. That is not hard to deliver.” Ms Dorries told the prominent Brexit campaigner Theresa May’s Brexit deal is only way in which Britain can regain control of its laws. But Mr Farage hit back once again and said: “That’s the problem. It doesn’t allow us to do those things. Let’s get out and leave the European Union. “I agree with you – huge social problems in this country, huge educational problems in this country. Let’s get this done with, get it over the line, leave on WTO rules and we are free.” MPs are set to vote on part of the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal on Friday but chances it will pass are slim with the DUP, which props up Mrs May’s Government, set to vote it down. The Prime Minister will urge the Commons to back her Withdrawal Agreement, which covers payment of the £39 billion to the EU, the Northern Ireland backstop and citizens’ rights. Defeat would see Britain leave the EU on April 12 with no deal. The Labour Remainer claimed to have bottled his leadership ambitions three years ago for “family-orientated reasons” and that he did not regret the decision to not run against Jeremey Corbyn to lead his party. But ITV Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan challenged the Labour backbencher on his decision asking him if he would ever think of taking up the position in the future. Mr Morgan said: “You not running, many people think, was one of the reasons that led to Jeremy Corbyn getting in. “And now you are where you are. “You’re crying after the milk got spilt because you allowed it to be spilt. “I thought you had a very good chance of becoming leader. “There would have been a very different narrative to the Labour party had you become leader.” Asked if he was ready to lead the Labour party, Mr Umunna replied: “I won’t be the leader of the Labour party. “Jeremy Corbyn is the leader of the Labour party. “I think it’s highly unlikely.” But as the ITV host pointed out “that’s not never”, the Labour MP admitted: “I do not think I will ever be the leader of the Labour party.” The Labour MP has been campaigning for a second Brexit referendum advocating in favour of the UK to remain in the European Union and thwart Brexit. In stark contrast, the leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn claimed he would seek to trigger a general election before March 2019 and only in the event of failing to get one he would consider advising his party to vote in favour of a second Brexit vote. It comes as Prime Minister Theresa May faces a confidence vote in her party leadership after Sir Graham Brady received 48 letters required to trigger the vote. Tory MPs will cast their votes between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday.

The stark warning was issued by MP Chuka Umunna, who noted there are political groups who will “seek to use the issue” of divides within the country “for their own nasty ends.” There is a problem sweeping the UK which ministers, MPs and the public must recognize, he said.
The London MP for Streatham insisted the issue is being hidden and ignored, despite his own warnings of a “national crisis” over the issue. In the past, areas which have been listed as having significant racial and ethnic divides are Luton and Blackburn.
“I think we need to do more. I think all parties should do more. I don’t think you can blame or place the will to do more on any particular party. All parties need to be seeking to do more on integration,” he told the Independent.
Umunna has warned of the creation of areas where extremists from “both ends can step in.”
“You cannot ignore the cultural dimensions of this. If you do, the problem is, you leave the field open to the far-right who will seek to use that field for their own nasty ends,” he warned.
The MP referred to the Casey review from 2016 for which the government came under fire. The review slammed UK politicians’ inadequate moves towards integration as no more than “saris, samosas and steel drums for the already well-intentioned.”
The interview follows a BBC Panorama show which portrayed divisions between ethnic groups in Blackburn.
“I think we should have statutory duties on local authorities followed up with financial resource to be able to handle demographic change in their communities, population changes and to help newcomers integrate to their community,” Umunna said.
“The second thing we need to do is help people with English language learning. Our research shows that almost one million people in our country do not talk English to a sufficient level,” he said.
Umunna, chair of the all-party group on social integration, said employers must allow people to time off to take English lessons.

Labour politician Chuka noted that he had recently travelled to Brussels to meet with Michel Barnier to discuss Brexit negotiations.
Piers probed: “Do they think that there is a chance of a second referendum? I know that you want another one.”
Nervously laughing, Chuka replied: “To be frank, and I’m not going to refer to any specific conversation, they don’t know.
“But I think why this is significant is because first of all, look, the process is not necessarily inevitable.
“The government says that legally, once you’ve triggered Article 50 you’re on the train, you can’t get off it,” he said. “That is wrong.”
The 39-year-old went on to add: “And politically, what Donald Tusk is saying here, and it is the same that I’ve been hearing from other governments of the EU 27, if at the end of the Brexit process, Brexit is just not what you thought it was going to be, you actually look at the deal you’re going to get and it’s awful and actually can we go back to the status quo, that is open you.
“I don’t know if we’re going to end up in that place because the process hasn’t finished yet but what I do know…”
But Piers wasn’t impressed with his answer as he snapped: “Chuka you do know, you do know because there is absolutely no deal ever imaginable on the table that you as a fierce Remoaner….”
“A Remoaner?” Chuka asked looking stunned. “I’m a Brit who wants us to have a close as possible relationship with…”
Piers, 52, hit back: “You’re a person who voted Remain and moans a lot about Brexiteers, you’re a Remoaner.
“People like you, there’s never going to be a deal on the table that you don’t find bad. Do you admit that?”
“I’m about to because Theresa May has taken the best possible options off the table and that’s going to destroy your viewers’ jobs” Chuka hit back.
Susanna Reid then piped up, quipping: “That’s what Jeremy Corbyn is going to do as well!”
However, before Chuka could respond and the debate could get even more heated, Piers put an end to the segment, swiftly interjecting: “Okay we’ve got to leave it there chaps!”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
The ITV broadcaster, 52, had to intervene as Labour MP Chuka Umunna and Conservative politician engaged in an angry war of words as the latter said that no deal was better than a bad Brexit agreement.
As the discussion heated up, Redwood, 66, told his sparring partner: “The pound goes up and down in the EU. It will go up outside the EU.
“We’ve actually had a period where the pound has risen about nine per cent against the dollar, I don’t remember Chuka coming on to say that was because of Brexit.”
At the same time Umunna, 38, could be heard trying to speak over Redwood and interrupt him: “Let’s look at the reality of the currency. Let’s look at the reality of the currency.”
“Nothing to do with Brexit, they are the kind of movements we had before we voted in the referendum,” Redwood hit back.
Umunna talked over Redwood, telling him: “The reality of the situation for most of this year.”
The clash became so heated that neither guest could be heard and Garraway warned them: “You can’t both talk over each other.”
Good Morning Britain co-host Ben Shephard agreed: “This is becoming a bit of a shouting match.”
However, neither of the duo could hear her over their own voices as Redwood continued to asset his point: “I don’t think Chuka studies the currency at all. The currency -.”
She ended up cutting off Redwood: “Alright John, let’s just pause it there for one minute because I wonder if it’s hard for everyone to follow when you both talk over each other.”
The exchange comes as Redwood posted on Twitter that “no deal is better than a bad deal” and shared a Sky Data poll in which 74 per cent would rather leave the EU without an agreement instead of one detrimental to the UK.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
The Streatham MP appeared on the ITV show alongside Tory rival Iain Duncan Smith, where he scrutinised Theresa May’s controversial move to pull out of ITV and the BBC’s televised debates for the snap general election she announced earlier this week.
However, following news that the Conservative Party have extended their historic lead over Labour by 24 points, Susanna Reid teased the headlines won’t make “great reading for Jeremy Corbyn”.
“This will be tough for Labour as it’s an usual election process,” admitted Umunna, 38. “Firstly there’s leaving the European Union, second thing is looking out for public services; the NHS is in crisis and is being starved of funds, and the economy has got to change.
“We’re the fifth most wealthiest country in the world.”
Reid was unconvinced as she dug out Corbyn’s bold promises going into the the June 8 vote, which included creating “a million good quality jobs”.
“How will you generate ‘decent’ jobs for all?” she said. “How do you promise that? Are you going to promise zero unemployment? That’s a fantasy land – it’s impossible.”
Umunna fired back: “I’m not gong to deny it, we’ve got a low rate of unemployment, but there 700,000 vacancies.”
Reid interrupted: “So you’re going to force people to take those jobs?”
Umunna also clashed with Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Iain Duncan Smith, who suggested that no one will be watching the upcoming head-to-head debates if Theresa May doesn’t stand.
“I think they’re a big yawn,” he moaned.
