Sesma wants to create mainstream entertainment, and his latest directed film, Section 8, falls in line with those interests. In Section 8, Ryan Kwanten plays Jake Atherton, an ex-special forces soldier struggling to adjust to life at home. When his wife and son are murdered, Jake is hellbent on revenge, and his violent actions put him in prison.

While incarcerated, Jake is recruited by Sam Ramsey (Dermot Mulroney), the leader of a mysterious agency called Section 8, which eliminates powerful people around the world. When he learns the true nature of Section 8, Jake must decide if the life of an assassin is one he wants to live. Dolph Lundgren co-stars along with Scott Adkins and Mickey Rourke.

In conversation with Digital Trends, Sesma discusses his love for the ’80s, praises Kwanten’s talent, and reveals how he shot an integral fight sequence in Section 8.

Ryan Kwanten and his family embrace in a scene from Section 8.

Note: This interview has been condensed and edited for length and clarity.

Digital Trends: A lot of your films apply a mainstream style of filmmaking. Why does this style appeal to you as a filmmaker?

I’m an ’80s kid. I grew up with Spielberg, John McTiernan, Lucas, Cameron, all those kinds of guys. You’re talking to a guy who, as a kid, watched Aliens, Die Hard, Indiana Jones, and all that stuff. That kind of escapist popcorn film is really ingrained in who I am as a storyteller, and I really think there’s a lot of fun to be had there. That’s the kind of film I enjoy, and I think every filmmaker is influenced by what they were influenced by as a kid, really. Whatever enchants you as a child, I think, will come out in who you are as a filmmaker.

Looking at your filmography, you’ve written and directed most of your projects, but you didn’t write Section 8. What do you look for in a script when it’s not yours?

Christian Sesma: The blueprint of it has to make sense for me. As kind of granular as it sounds, see what I can get excited for from my own movie nerdiness. [Laughs] I’m just a movie nerd at heart so something has to go, “Oh, dude. I can make that. That’s going to be like a mini-Mission Impossible or something.” I have to kind of wrap my head around it that way, and then I take the script and flesh it out from there.

Chad Law is a fantastic writer. We’re good friends in real life. He brought me this project along with Brandon Burrows, the movie’s producer. They were like, “We really think we can make something cool here. We’re putting together a pretty cool package.” It was something that I felt I could do something with on the scope, but also really just at a human level with Ryan Kwanten and his family and all that stuff.

Scott Adkins points a gun in a scene from Section 8.

I recently spoke to Ryan about another film, Glorious. Now, he’s the star of this action thriller. My biggest takeaway from talking to him was his commitment level to a project. That as soon as he buys in, he’s in, and he gives it his all. What stood out to you about Ryan during this process?

Exactly what you just said. Ryan is a dream lead to work with. He’s a phenomenal talent and human being. He gives it his all. I come from guerilla filmmaking. I’m self-taught so Ryan was super game to just get loose with a lot of things that other actors or people wouldn’t be so up for. I was able to shoot a lot of this in my backyard in the Coachella Valley and the Palm Springs area. A lot of this was like, “Hey. Let’s go grab these shots.”

A lot of this stuff was also improvised. There are a lot of unscripted elements that Ryan and I were really excited to explore so that was really fun. Because he’s all in, and because we kind of connected and we understood each other’s ideas for this movie, it really made it a true pleasure working with him, which is something that, for a director, makes all the difference in the world. When your lead is all in, that helps you tremendously.

With your directing style, how do you approach unscripted moments? Do you like to shoot what’s in the script first, and then give the actors a few takes to play around with ideas?

Yeah. I mean there’s that. We definitely use the script as our guideline and blueprint. Sometimes, there’s some room to play around the edges. Sometimes, there’s stuff that I feel we could add to the script, like flashbacks of the family, and his relationship with his wife and son. When you’re going through that, you start getting ideas of what could help make this better.

SECTION 8 | Official Trailer

Section 8 has a lot of fight sequences. Take me through the process of directing a fight scene. Are you working in tandem with the stunt coordinators to choreograph every move?

Yeah. Let’s say the end sequence fight with Scott Adkins. That’s all previs out with the stunt coordinator and their team. They go through the choreography, and we’re able to work on it a couple of weeks before. Then Scott gets to set. We start working out the kinks, and then you start shooting it based on what’s called previs, which is basically like a visual storyboard. Then, you just start doing almost like a paint-by-numbers because we’ve already worked out the angles for the shots. Now, you’re doing it for real with the real cameras and lighting and crew and wardrobe. So it really is very pre-planned stuff.

What type of action sequence do you prefer? Are you a long car chase sequence guy, or a big gunfight? Maybe just good old-fashioned hand-to-hand combat?

Hmm. Good question. I probably prefer spaceships or robots. [Laughs] Good ol’ space battles. A good ol’ lightsaber battle. I don’t think you can beat a swordfight or lightsaber battle.

In action movies, a common critique usually involves the story, character development, and dialogue. Maybe the film didn’t have enough dialogue or character development and focused too much on the action sequences or vice versa. Maybe the dialogue was great, but it lacked action. How do you find a healthy balance between the action and the quieter moments?

Again, I think that goes with experience. Early on, maybe I’d be so excited to shoot an action sequence that I would miss the dramatic beats or vice versa. I think now when I’m approaching an action movie, I’ll know that the action movie has plenty of action beats in it so I’ll double down on the dramatic beats. So I know in editorial, we’ll have enough to balance them both.

Dolph Lundgren firmly stares in a scene from Section 8.

Did you have a favorite scene to shoot for this film?

To be honest, I really couldn’t wait to get the family stuff done. That was probably the most exciting stuff. I know if that didn’t work and if I didn’t grab you, then you’re just kind of checked out for just another gunfight. I felt like from the moment he gets home to his final cathartic moment in the nightclub where he catches up with the guy who killed his kid, that’s just one big sequence.

That’s a sequence that I really, really like personally because it’s emotional, suspenseful, [and] dramatic. There are some action beats there. I felt like if that wasn’t done the way I wanted it to be done, I don’t know if anybody would be along fully for the right after that. People might have checked out.

Section 8 is now in theaters and streaming on AMC+.

The Pale Blue Eye: Release Date, Cast, And More For The Christian Bale Netflix Movie https://briefnews.eu/the-pale-blue-eye-release-date-cast-and-more-for-the-christian-bale-netflix-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/the-pale-blue-eye-release-date-cast-and-more-for-the-christian-bale-netflix-movie/#respond Tue, 30 Aug 2022 18:09:26 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-pale-blue-eye-release-date-cast-and-more-for-the-christian-bale-netflix-movie/

(Welcome to …And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

Hot off his rather surprising appearance as the main villain Gorr the God Butcher in “Thor: Love and Thunder” (making him the latest actor to have dipped his toes into both ends of the DC and Marvel swimming pool), Christian Bale is about to venture back into much more familiar territory. Bale has collaborated with director Scott Cooper on a few occasions in the past, stretching back to 2013’s “Out of the Furnace” and the 2017 Western “Hostiles.” The third time should be the charm for both artists, as they’re once again reuniting for the upcoming “The Pale Blue Eye.” Official information about this project has remained scarce up until recently, as Netflix begins to ramp up marketing for the film that’s set to arrive roughly towards the end of this year and the beginning of the next.

Long a passion project for Cooper, “The Pale Blue Eye” now has a first look image and a release date to look forward to, along with various other notes and tidbits about what the film is about, who’s involved, and everything else you need to know.

The Pale Blue Eye Release Date And Where To Watch It

Christian Bale has seen one other film of his end up going straight to Netflix, although that wasn’t quite the intention from the beginning. Director Andy Serkis’ “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” was originally meant to debut theatrically via Warner Bros., but Netflix ended up swooping in and taking that picture off the studio’s hands. This time around, however, “The Pale Blue Sky” will undergo a limited theatrical release before premiering on Netflix. Mark it down on your calendars to look for theatrical showtimes near you on December 23, 2022. After that brief run, the movie will be made available on streaming January 6, 2023.

What Is The Pale Blue Eye About?

Upon the production’s initial announcement, director Scott Cooper stated that, “This is my attempt at a large-canvas whodunit, with a serial killer at its center. I want to make films that push me into a different, maybe uncomfortable space, but I am glad to have Christian go there with me. I’ve wanted to make this for over a decade and fortunately for me, Christian has perfectly aged into the lead character.” Cooper’s film is an adaptation, based on the 2006 novel of the same title by author Louis Bayard. The plot has been described as a “Gothic thriller that revolves around a series of fictional murders that took place in 1830 at the United States Military.” The longer synopsis of the novel is as follows:

At West Point Academy in 1830, the calm of an October evening is shattered by the discovery of a young cadet’s body swinging from a rope. The next morning, an even greater horror comes to light. Someone has removed the dead man’s heart. Augustus Landor—who acquired some renown in his years as a New York City police detective—is called in to discreetly investigate. It’s a baffling case Landor must pursue in secret, for the scandal could do irreparable damage to the fledgling institution. But he finds help from an unexpected ally—a moody, young cadet with a penchant for drink, two volumes of poetry to his name, and a murky past that changes from telling to telling. The strange and haunted Southern poet for whom Landor develops a fatherly affection, is named Edgar Allan Poe.

The Pale Blue Eye Cast And Crew

Given the lead actor involved and the well-known figure featured in the story, casting will prove to be even more important than usual with “The Pale Blue Eye.” Christian Bale is attached as lead protagonist Augustus Landor, the detective in charge of unraveling this disturbing murder mystery. The aforementioned “young cadet” who’s none other than Edgar Allan Poe himself will be portrayed by distinctive character actor Harry Melling, a veteran of the “Harry Potter” franchise, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and the popular Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit.” We previously reported that a bevy of other actors had also joined the cast. These names include Gillian Anderson, Robert Duvall, Timothy Spall, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, and Harry Lawtey.

As mentioned, the film will be written and directed by Scott Cooper. The esteemed Howard Shore is reportedly on board to compose the score, with cinematography duties falling to Masanobu Takayanagi, who’s known for his work on “Warrior,” “The Grey,” “Spotlight,” and Cooper’s previous film, “Hostiles.” Stay tuned for more details as they come in.

The Hills Recap: Is Mischa Barton’s Comeback Going According to Plan? (Plus: Heidi Montag, Christian Singer?) https://briefnews.eu/the-hills-recap-is-mischa-bartons-comeback-going-according-to-plan-plus-heidi-montag-christian-singer/ https://briefnews.eu/the-hills-recap-is-mischa-bartons-comeback-going-according-to-plan-plus-heidi-montag-christian-singer/#respond Tue, 30 Jul 2019 11:34:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-hills-recap-is-mischa-bartons-comeback-going-according-to-plan-plus-heidi-montag-christian-singer/

It took six weeks, but we finally reached the “new beginnings” part of The Hills: New Beginnings on Monday, courtesy of comeback queens Mischa Barton and Heidi Montag. Once titans of their respective industries, Mischa (empress of television) and Heidi (mistress of music) have decided that it’s time to get back to business, leading to arguably the biggest twist in Hills-tory.

We’re talking, of course, about Heidi’s decision to become a Christian recording artist and release a “faith-based” song. Did we miss the episode where Heidi found religion? Either way, we hope her new material doesn’t stray too far from the lyrics she crooned back in 2010: “They say I’m superficial / Some call me a bitch / They’re just mad cause I’m sexy, famous and I’m rich.”

Meanwhile, Mischa — voted 2004’s Breakout Female TV Star by the Teen Choice Awards jury — went on her first acting audition since parting ways with her momager a few years ago. We still don’t know the name of the project, but we’ve gathered that it’s a period piece (1960s?) and requires Mischa to put on her best Designing Women voice as a brothel worker named Ruth. “If all the cards are right and fall into place, this could be a total comeback,” Mischa said. (Mixed metaphors aside, we’re rooting for her.)

Elsewhere this week…

* Stephanie, Audrina and Joey had a long-overdue sit-down to hash out all this Justin Bobby nonsense, and it accomplished… absolutely nothing. Stephanie insisted (for the millionth time) that she never hooked up with Justin Bobby, so Audrina — desperate for any opportunity to keep this imaginary love triangle afloat — decided to take a new approach: “I don’t even care if you did or didn’t.” What?! We haven’t been this confused since Spencer brought up the multiverse during his latest business update.

* The madness continued during a post-fight spat between Audrina and Justin Bobby, which ended with her telling him he’s “not that special” and asking, “Why are you such a d—k?” (With this relationship officially squashed, and Stephanie [possibly] not returning, The Hills is going to be hurting for romantic drama next season. Perhaps it’ll be time for some actual new beginnings.)

* Just asking… When is someone going to figure out that Frankie is the one pulling the strings behind the scenes?

Your thoughts on Mischa and Heidi’s comebacks? Audrina’s change of course? Ruth’s future at the brothel? Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.

ITV GMB: Kate Garraway silences Terry Christian as HUGE Brexit row ERUPTS with Tim Martin https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-kate-garraway-silences-terry-christian-as-huge-brexit-row-erupts-with-tim-martin/ https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-kate-garraway-silences-terry-christian-as-huge-brexit-row-erupts-with-tim-martin/#respond Fri, 15 Feb 2019 09:35:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-kate-garraway-silences-terry-christian-as-huge-brexit-row-erupts-with-tim-martin/

The Wetherspoons boss appeared via live video link on Good Morning Britain for a debate on the topic as Terry sat in the ITV studio with Kate and Ben Shepherd.

Terry was arguing that, if a company has to sack workers because of a weakened pound, they should lay off workers who voted for Brexit first.

It came after he posted a provocative poll on his Twitter page regarding potential job losses because of Brexit.

His post read: “If you own a business and because of brexit and the weak pound you are forced to lay workers off – is it fairer to lay off: Leave voters 1st, Remainers 1st, Choose randomly.”

But Tim alleged job losses hadn’t occurred and the UK was in a battle for “self-determination”.

“What I’m saying is they voted for this short term pain but I’m letting them have it,” Terry insisted.

However, as Tim kept trying to answer the questions, Terry was interrupting and host Kate had to call him out.

Terry said if he was the boss of Wetherspoons, he too would want a no deal Brexit.

Tim responded: “Nonsense. Terry, you’re talking absolute nonsense.”

“If I was selling a loaf and it was a bit mouldy and stale people would by it if they’re poorer,” Terry said.

But Tim hit out: “You are to economics what Tiger Woods is to monogamy, you have no understanding at all.”

“Alright Tim,” Kate interrupted before adding: “If Brexit does go plan who is going to be laid off?”

Terry interrupted: “They were warned it would cost jobs.”

Tim then complained: “I can’t speak if Terry keeps interrupting.”

Terry wasn’t about to give up anytime soon as he continued to say his piece over Tim as the businessman stated: “You’re a broadcaster, you know very well if you keep talking I can’t answer.”

“Terry, give him a chance,” Kate warned.

Given the space to speak, Tim declared: “Terry is making the assumption that we’ll be worse off which we heard before the referendum that we’d lose jobs by now, we’ve actually created half a million which is a direct contradiction of what people frightened us into to vote Remain.”

Ben then touched upon the fact Tim was after a no deal Brexit, and Terry was quick to criticise him again.

“Great for Wetherspoons, he can sell more cheap booze,” Terry said.

He continued: “My savings have already reduced by 18 per cent because of the pound. This is because all our trade is done with Europe. No deal Brexit is a car crash, it will destroy us.”

As the debate was coming to an end, Tim dryly added: “Terry for Chancellor of the Exchequer I say.”

“Cheap booze, more poverty, better for him,” Terry added once again.

The discussion then concluded, with Ben announcing: “I think we need a bit of a rest, crikey.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

Chelsea news: Eden Hazard replacement claim made ahead of Christian Pulisic arrival https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-eden-hazard-replacement-claim-made-ahead-of-christian-pulisic-arrival/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-eden-hazard-replacement-claim-made-ahead-of-christian-pulisic-arrival/#respond Sat, 02 Feb 2019 16:08:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-eden-hazard-replacement-claim-made-ahead-of-christian-pulisic-arrival/

That’s according to former United States international Kyle Martino.

Pulisic was signed for a fee of £58m at the beginning of January but was loaned straight back out to Borussia Dortmund.

The American had been linked with Chelsea for months, but he was also said to have been interested in joining Liverpool.

The size of the fee has invited criticism from some, but Martino believes the 20-year-old can live up to it.

And with Hazard looking like he may join Real Madrid in the summer, Pulisic will have to deliver.

“He can [start] and I think $ 73million says that Chelsea thinks that he needs to be ready to start,” he said.

“It is big money for a player who’s worth it.

“You look at the video and it tells you the quality is there but what’s hard to scout is his character.”

Martino then went on to note that Pulisic needed some arrogance if he’s going to fill the boots of Chelsea’s star man.

“But I have talked to some of the US players that were with him and the coaches that have coached him, who have said he is the right side of cockiness,” he added.

“He has this confidence where he plays and he wants to take over a game and I just think Chelsea are getting a player that.

“If Eden Hazard leaves, that is ready to come and start right away.”

If his price-tag is anything to go by, Pulisic will likely come straight into the starting line-up when he links up with his new team-mates in the summer.

The future of Willian, who has been subject to bids from Barcelona in the past, as well as some interest from PSG, is still unclear.

Chelsea may look for other attacking midfielders in the summer, as the futures of Pedro, who’s the wrong side of 30, and Callum Hudson-Odoi, are also up in the air.

Syrian Christian town where Jesus’ language remains in use celebrates Christmas (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/syrian-christian-town-where-jesus-language-remains-in-use-celebrates-christmas-video/ https://briefnews.eu/syrian-christian-town-where-jesus-language-remains-in-use-celebrates-christmas-video/#respond Thu, 27 Dec 2018 12:07:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/syrian-christian-town-where-jesus-language-remains-in-use-celebrates-christmas-video/

One of the places where Christmas was celebrated on Tuesday is Maaloula, a small town near Damascus, where residents still speak Aramaic, the language used by Jesus Christ.

Maaloula is located in a mountainous area near the Syrian capital, where two ancient Christian monasteries also stand. The area saw heavy fighting against Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadists in 2013 and 2014. Some of the damage can still be seen at Christian sites, like defaced crosses and icons or damaged frescos.

But with peace returning to the cradle of Christianity in Syria, people there gathered together with their families and celebrated Christmas in the ancient churches.

“After terrorism had assaulted this monastery and caused a lot of destruction, sabotaging, looting, and setting fires, we restored the monastery, and we are receiving believers who want to get the blessings of this place, as well as hold prayers and religious rituals,” Archimandrite Matta Rizq of the Mar Thecla monastery told Ruptly.

An anti-terrorist raid ended with 19 Islamist militants killed in a firefight as Egyptian security forces cornered them in a mountainous area in Minya Province, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday. The officials linked the militants to the terrorist attack in Minya earlier this week. On Friday, gunmen killed seven people when they opened fire on two buses transporting Coptic Christian pilgrims to a monastery. Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

He often wears suits, has thick glasses and when he talks, he starts out in an informal, teenager-like tone but then quickly recovers into academic language. Othman El Hammouchi is on his way to becoming one of Belgium’s most prominent philosophers, but he’s still an 18-year-old college student. “My choice to study mathematics had nothing to do with politics,” El Hammouchi laughs when I ask him about his choice of study, amid his first-year exams at the Free University of Brussels. “I’m just interested in certain questions and how they relate to things like the relativity theory and Kantian philosophy.”

When he was 17, El Hammouchi won an essay contest for high school students and in his own words entered the “circuit” of writing opinion pieces, doing interviews and giving talks. Since then he has been featured in most of Belgium’s newspapers, and one of the country’s most important philosophers, Etienne Vermeersch, called him “brilliant.”

At first sight, his conservatism seems to be quite traditional. “For me, conservatism is a complete world view that places emphasis on traditional structures such as religion, marriage and hierarchy,” El Hammouchi says. Yet at the same time, he moves away from commonly held positions on the right, such as doubting the existence of man-made climate change. “As a conservative, you shouldn’t deny science,” he says.

The traditional marriage was a sort of contract in which the woman exchanged sex for stability. Yet the sexual revolution undermined that.

Othman El Hammouchi

His most obvious clash with today’s right? El Hammouchi is a religious Muslim at a time when European conservatives are moving toward hard-line positions on identity, often critical of Islam. It’s not just far-right groups. A leader of the conservative New Flemish Alliance, Belgium’s biggest party, Bart De Wever this year told a local newspaper: “Muslims want a place in the public space, in education, with their external religious symbols. That causes tension.”

This kind of rhetoric, argues El Hammouchi, means “conservatives in Belgium are throwing away the votes of 7 percent of the population who are Muslim.” He rather argues for a “conservative grand alliance” between Christians and Muslims. “One of my goals is to take away this irrational hatred toward Islam,” he says. His work has elicited little reaction from conservative politicians, but recently he joined Doorbraak, a prominent publication in conservative circles, as a regular contributor.

When I ask him what he is currently reading — besides his exam coursework, of course — he rattles down a lengthy list of philosophy books. He mentions Dutch (and strongly atheist) philosopher Herman Philipse’s God in the Age of Science? A Critique of Religious Reason and Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, a 1979 book by Douglas Hofstadter about cognition and machines. But Immanuel Kant “was truly the greatest,” El Hammouchi says of the German philosopher behind Critique of Pure Reason.

El Hammouchi grew up in Vilvoorde, a small city in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking area of Belgium, right outside of Brussels. He credits his “orthodox Muslim family” for his conservatism. Said Bataray, a pundit who knows El Hammouchi, says his friend’s focus on the family is all-encompassing. “Othman is a good aspiring philosopher, but he is also a bit sheltered,” Bataray says. “He was always the smartest in his class, came from a good family and encountered little discrimination so far in his life.”

El Hammouchi’s political thinking is difficult to pin down — and evolving, as one would expect of an 18-year-old. He might critique contradictions in European conservatism while at other times taking hard-line positions out of step with progressive Belgian society. His socially conservative views about gender and sexuality have already caused controversy. “The traditional marriage was a sort of contract in which the woman exchanged sex for stability,” he says. “Yet the sexual revolution undermined that. And I don’t think women benefited. Men can now do whatever they want.”

When he published a fiercely antiabortion article in which he compared abortion to murder (not so common in European conservatism, compared to its U.S. counterpart), it yielded a strong counterreaction. Writer Heleen Debruyne called him pompous, adding: “I could ignore this little philosopher, but if history teaches us anything, it’s that we should keep guarding the social rights we conquered.” Meanwhile, social media commenters questioned how much media attention should still be put on the provocative views of El Hammouchi.

In Europe, May 1968 has become shorthand for a range of progressive movements active during the ’60s, which culminated in a massive wave of strikes and riots in Paris. Belgium also saw riots at that time, mainly in the student city of Leuven, where protests by Dutch-speaking students snowballed into a broader movement against traditional hierarchies such as the church, patriarchy and traditional politics. To European conservatives, it unleashed individualism, irresponsibility and identity politics.

Gui Polspoel is a journalist who was a student in Leuven during that time who recently debated El Hammouchi. “He reads a lot of books and philosophers, yet he fails to truly think,” Polspoel says. “He just quotes them but remains stuck in his own dogmas. May ’68 was for me a movement of emancipation and thinking outside accepted frames. Maybe he should use more of that spirit himself.”

Bataray points out that El Hammouchi’s heterodox thought can hardly be considered rigid. “He can think outside of the box; in some areas, he is very advanced and has extremely interesting ideas,” Bataray says. “Yet in others, he is so cramped it occasionally gets difficult.”

El Hammouchi is staying busy as his public profile continues to grow, writing for Doorbraak and working on a wide-ranging book. Yet he is still a student. Grand alliances notwithstanding, for the moment he still has exams to pass.

Several thousand protesters hit the streets of Pakistan calling for the Christian woman accused of insulting Islam be put to death. Asia Bibi would become the first person executed for blasphemy if her appeal fails.

The Pakistani city of Lahore was the center of Friday’s protests, which were organized by the anti-blasphemy party Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP). Demonstrations also took place in a number of other cities across the country, including Karachi and Rawalpindi.

The rallies came after Pakistan’s Supreme Court heard the final appeal of Bibi, a Christian laborer accused of blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed in 2009 by Muslim women she was working with in a field.

According to Bibi’s autobiography ‘Blasphemy: A Memoir: Sentenced to Death Over a Cup of Water’ the incident began when she went to retrieve a cup of water from a well during a hot day of fruit picking.

When a Muslim woman nearby saw her doing so she shouted, “Don’t drink that water, it’s haram (forbidden)!” She then turned to the other women in the field, telling them that Bibi had dirtied the water in the well by drinking from their cup.

“Now the water is unclear and we can’t drink it! Because of her!” the woman said. Several women called Bibi a “filthy Christian” and told her to convert to Islam.

“I’m not going to convert. I believe in my religion and in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the sins of mankind. What did your Prophet Mohammed ever do to save mankind? And why should it be me that converts instead of you?” Bibi said.

At that point, one woman spat on her while another shoved her. Days later, she was accused of blasphemy.

Friday’s protests came despite the court saying it had reached a judgment at a hearing on Monday, but that it would not be released immediately for “reasons to be recorded later.” It also said that it had ruled on a petition that would put Bibi on the no-fly list if released, but did not publish that judgment either.

Bibi’s case has prompted international calls for her release, with Pope Benedict XVI joining in the calls in 2010. Pope Francis met with Bibi’s daughter in 2015.
