A Bat-mystery has been solved. Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries has shed some light on the decision to not recast the role of Kate Kane, in the wake of Ruby Rose abruptly parting ways with the CW series, but instead create “a whole new character” to slip into the cape and cowl for Season 2. As recently reported, Batwoman has put out a casting call for a new character (possibly code-)named “Ryan Wilder,” who is described as “likeable,” “goofy,” and a “highly skilled [but] wildly undisciplined” fighter. She will, hopefully sooner rather than later once Season 2 arrives in early 2021, come to adopt the vigilante persona of Batwoman. A June 3 TVLine op-ed called into question the change-up, given how it will likely render meaningless so much of what was established during Season 1. Now Dries, in an ATX Festival At Home Q&A with fellow CW showrunner Julie Plec (of Legacies), spoke about the decision for the first time since Season 1 ended. “To be honest with you, I did consider the ‘soap opera version’ [of recasting] for a hot minute, because selfishly we already had a couple episodes written, and transition-wise it would be seamless,” she told Plec. “But upon further reflection — and I think [Arrowverse EP] Greg [Berlanti] helped me make this call — he’s like, ‘I think we should just reboot Batwoman as a different character.’” In addition to paying “respect to everything that Ruby [Rose] put into the Kate Kane character” during Season 1, Dries said, “it also helps the audience, because we’re not asking them to address ‘the elephant in the room’” by accepting a new face as the same person. Dries went on to affirm that “Ryan Wilder” is “a whole new character who in her past was inspired by Batwoman, so she is going to take on the mantle,” adding that the scrappy twentysomething who lives in a van, with her plant, “is maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun.” Want scoop on Batwoman, or for any other show? White House adviser Kellyanne Conway and her husband, attorney George Conway, disclosed intimate details of their marriage in an interview with The Washington Post.

The Night King (played by Vladimir Furdik) has been planning a rising for years on Game of Thrones.
Fans had initially been confused as to why he chose now to launch an attack on Westeros, as Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) desperately try to defeat him.
But now it seems a simple explanation may have just revealed why he felt now was the time.
Game of Thrones fans on Reddit have been discussing what his plan is and it seems there could be something related to Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright).
arnorwarrior suggested the Night King has the ability to see in to the future, just like Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow).
They added: “He needed a period to attack where the Seven Kingdoms were a mess and dragons were around for him to get one to break The Wall.
“Now is the first time in 8000 years where those conditions have been true.”
This suggests the Night King has been waiting a long time, and could be the same one seen made by the Children of the Forest.
With one very old being, he now has nothing to lose and will certainly go all guns blazing for the prize he has waited so long for.
TuntSloid suggested a different motive for attacking Westeros, and it relates to his creation story.
When his heart was plunged with an obsidian blade, the process of gaining eternal life and wintry powers was certainly not pain-free.
The Reddit user suggested it was this creation which meant he was out for revenge, not actually taking Westeros.
They wrote: “Perhaps the man who became the Night King did not want to be stabbed in the chest by an obsidian blade.
“Probably didn’t know he would be the Night King until after the transition – perhaps that’s the motive.
“He wants revenge on the children or any other acting parties on the eternal curse put on him.”
But what is the Night King’s plan? And will he actually leave the Westerosi forces alone once he meets them?
The Night King has been no stranger to leaving a trail of devastation in his path.
But it is always neatly arranged into a collection of symbols.
Are they actually a sign of what’s to come? Or could they just be a nice way of disposing corpses?
Game of Thrones season 8 will return to HBO and Sky Atlantic in 2019. Seasons 1-7 are currently streaming on NOW TV.

There is no louder and more impassioned voice about the current movement in Hollywood to get more female-focused stories told than Jessica Chastain. But she says some guys are allowed to come along for the ride.
Chastain made headlines at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, along with fellow stars Lupita Nyong’o, Marion Cotillard, Bingbing Fan, and Penélope Cruz, when they converged on the French Riviera to announce the movie, “355,” in which they all star as international spies.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

NSW halfback Nathan Cleary has revealed owning a New Zealand passport could have meant representing the Kiwis against England in the controversial Test match in the US on Sunday.
Cleary was born in Sydney but spent much of his childhood in Auckland, where dad Ivan played and coached the Warriors before taking over at Penrith in 2012.
The Panthers star admitted he once considered making himself eligible for NZ before his parents intervened.
“I had a Kiwi passport but mum and dad didn’t want me to play for them. I felt I was Australian the whole time anyway,” Cleary told AAP.

“My little brother and sister were both born there so they’ve got Kiwi passports too.
“But I was born here, and both my parents are Australian, so it just felt right.”
Not only could he have been performing the haka, but Cleary could’ve been lost to rugby league having grown up primarily playing soccer until he was 15.

He made a number of representative teams on the northern beaches and Auckland, and became a huge fan of Ronaldo in his days at Manchester United.
“I started playing soccer when I was four. You don’t get to make many decisions at that age, and dad played it until he was 18 so I didn’t really have a choice,” he said.
“I enjoyed it. I became a big Manchester United fan and that’s when I started following Ronaldo. I’m pretty into it. I love the World Cup – it’s pretty cool when everyone stops and watches it.”
Instead the 20-year-old has the chance to become just the second Blues halfback in 14 years to deliver an Origin shield to the state in Sunday’s blockbuster at ANZ Stadium.
And the day before the Socceroos’ crucial pool match against Denmark, Cleary says part of his rise can be credited to his once promising career in the round- ball game.
“Playing soccer, striking the ball, you’d like to think there’s a fair bit of correlation there with my goalkicking and general kicking game. I reckon a lot of it came from that,” he said.

When a Chinese trading ship under Dutch protection ran aground on a coral reef off the southern coast of Bali, the islanders took a traditional view of the accident. By the custom of tawan karang, or “reef right,” any cargo they recovered bobbing in the turquoise waters of the Java Sea was considered a gift from the maritime deity Baruna.
The Dutch didn’t see it that way. Or, as some historians would have it, they chose not to see it that way, and used the locals’ exercise of reef rights as a pretext for completing their conquest of Bali. The resulting invasion of the southern half of the island in late 1904 not only set in motion the fall of the last remaining independent Balinese kingdoms but also one of the largest mass suicide protests in modern times — if anyone is keeping count.
Suicide is very negative in Bali. Puputan isn’t suicidal, it’s a fight to the death.
Magaret Weiner, author, Visible and Invisible Realms: Power, Magic and Colonial Conquests
At the time, the Dutch already controlled northern Bali, a process of conquest and colonization that had begun in the early 19th century. And now the Europeans issued an ultimatum to the rajas of the rebellious Hindu kingdoms in the south: Compensate the Chinese traders for the cargo the locals “stole” from the grounded ship, disarm and end the practice of slavery, or prepare to become casualties of war or vassals. When the kings rejected the demands, the Dutch prepared to march south.
In September 1906, Gen. M.B. Rost van Tonningen and his army of hundreds of soldiers, cavalry and artillery batteries met only light resistance as they advanced through mountainous jungles to the capital of the kingdom of Badung, now Denpasar, at the island’s southern tip. Accompanying the expeditionary force was Dutch war journalist H.M. van Weede, who noted that when the troops arrived outside the capital’s puri — a combination temple and palace — they were met by an eerie silence marked only by a low thrum of drumming.
Then, a strange procession emerged from the puri. In front was a palanquin carrying the raja of Badung, followed by an entourage of priests, guards, women and children, all dressed in white, wielding ceremonial kris daggers and marching trancelike toward the invaders. Van Weede and other Europeans present speculated that members of the procession had consumed opium — abundant in the region — before exiting the puri. Disobeying orders to halt, they continued to march toward the Dutch and stopped at a distance of about 100 paces. Then the raja gave the signal, and a priest stabbed him through the chest. The puputan was on.
The word means “to finish” in Balinese and generally refers to a last, desperate attack. The most literal translation into English is “slaughter protest.” The sense, though, is closer to “ritual self-sacrifice.”
Some men and women began stabbing themselves while others charged the soldiers. A stray rifle shot was said to have triggered a Dutch volley that mowed down the front lines of the procession. Those who hadn’t been shot continued to kill themselves or other Balinese. Those who were only slightly wounded finished off the ones who were more seriously hurt. The women in the group mockingly tossed jewels and gold at the Dutch troops while begging the soldiers to shoot. Hundreds of bodies piled up around the empty palanquin, the white ceremonial garb of the slain stained scarlet with blood. Van Weede took photos for posterity.
By the time the puputan ended, as many as 1,000 Balinese lay dead, according to Dutch estimates. It wasn’t the first time the colonists had encountered the ritual: In 1894 the rulers of the island of Lombok, just to the east, had initiated a mass suicide in response to a Dutch invasion. In 1908 — following a second and final ritual suicide by the raja and his followers in the Bali kingdom of Klungkung — the Dutch completed their conquest of the island.
Not all puputans were suicidal, and not all ended in defeat. But the Badung populace must have known what was coming when they faced the colonial troops. “For them perhaps, the puputan was indeed more symbolic than strategic, the last act of a tragic dance-drama, natural for a people whose genius for theater is unsurpassed,” writes Robert Pringle in A Short History of Bali.
It’s better to see the puputan as a last act of resistance rather than one of despair, says Magaret Weiner, author of Visible and Invisible Realms: Power, Magic and Colonial Conquests. “Suicide is very negative in Bali. This isn’t suicidal, it’s a fight to the death. It’s determination.”
Since the Dutch conquest and the events of the early 20th century, Weiner says, the concept of puputan has morphed into drastic resistance to foreign influence. With Indonesian independence, the deadly defiance is remembered with pride. Every year the island commemorates puputans in re-enactments that call on European expats to play the role of the colonial Dutch.
Calls have even been made by activists for modern pupuptans against that new form of colonialism — tourism.

The British Royal Family are largely known by their first names – but what is their surname?
The royals traditionally did not have a surname at all, but this changed in 1917.
King George V decreed the family surname would be Windsor, seven years after he ascended to the throne.
The house name, something royals have always had, was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
King George decided this was too germanic, and due to anti-German feeling at the time, he switched to the much more British sounding “Windsor”, which came from royal property Windsor Castle.
However he made the decision not just to change the dynasty name, but make this the official surname too.
Today, the Royal Family is still known as the House of Windsor, however the Queen made a slight modification to their surname.
In 1960, the Queen and Prince Philip decided they wanted to differentiate between their branch of the family tree and others.
So they hyphenated Windsor with Mountbatten, Philip’s surname, and all of their descendants carry the name Mountbatten-Windsor.
There is one exception, as any royal with the title “His Royal Highness Prince or “Her Royal Highness Princess” doesn’t need to use a surname at all.
They can use Mountbatten-Windsor if they need to, but they don’t have to do so. Princess Anne put it on her wedding certificate in 1973, for example.
Confusingly, some members of the Royal Family don’t use Mountbatten-Windsor, but do use their family’s territorial name instead.
For example, Prince William and Prince Harry used “Wales” when they served in the military because their father is the Prince of Wales.
Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are reported to use York, since their father, Prince Andrew, is the Duke of York.
There are other names in use too – Princess Anne’s children took their father’s last name, Phillips, although Zara is now married and uses Tindall. Prince Edward’s daughter uses Windsor, without Mountbatten.
The Royal Family’s official website notes: “A proclamation on the Royal Family name […] does not pass into the law of the land.” Simply put, none of the royals have to use the official surname, and newly crowned kings or queens are not bound to continue the surname rules set by predecessors.

Akayed Ullah, the 27-year-old Brooklyn resident who attempted to carry out a suicide attack at New York City’s busiest transit hub, chose the location because of its Christmas-themed posters, The New York Times reported on Monday.
The explosion went off in the passageway linking the Port Authority and Times Square subway stations in midtown Manhattan. Numerous reports indicated that the bomb may have exploded prematurely, and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Ullah “did not achieve his ultimate goals.”
According to former NYPD commission Bill Bratton and multiple media reports, Ullah is believed to have been inspired by the terrorist group ISIS. And according to CNN, Ullah told investigators he detonated the pipe bomb in retaliation for Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Ullah was taken to a hospital for treatment for his injuries, which the police said included burns to his hands and abdomen. The police said just three other people were injured in the attack and that the injuries were not life-threatening.
Sources told the New York Post that the suspect told investigators he made the explosive device at the electrical company.
The Times reported that the police found Ullah with an intact explosive device, which it said they stripped him to remove. The Joint Terrorism Task Force is reportedly still investigating the attack and Ullah’s motives.
Ullah has lived in the US for seven years and entered the country on an F43 family immigrant visa. He was a licensed driver for the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission from 2012 to 2015, NYC TLC Deputy Commissioner for Public Affairs Allan J. Fromberg told CNN. Ullah was not licensed to drive a NYC yellow taxi, Fromberg said.
