The US Air Force has some of the most high-tech aircraft in the world flying missions at the spear’s tip. But a remarkably large number of its systems are what would gently be referred to as “vintage”—and those systems are performing some of the Air Force’s most important missions. One of those senior-citizen system earned its wings during the war in Vietnam—the 48-year old UH-1 Iroquois, also known as the “Huey”.

We’ve reported frequently on the role that the A-10 Thunderbolt II fills for the Air Force. The 1970s-era turbofan-powered tank-killer turned close-air-support-provider-extraordinaire is constantly called upon in Afghanistan and Syria to provide firepower to protect US and allied forces. The B-52, the strategic bomber that entered service in the 1950s, has years of service still ahead of it—flying long-duration missions ranging from strategic deterrence to close air support in uncontested skies. And the land leg of the US nuclear triad, the Minuteman III ICBM, entered service in the 1960s.

The wreckage of a missing Russian Mi-8 helicopter has been located, the rescue coordination center said in a statement. The remains of the helicopter were located “on the ocean floor north east of Heerodden, [at] a depth of 209 meters,” the statement said. Police “will be in charge of conducting a search for casualties.” The helicopter with eight people on board was reported missing on Thursday.

This is not a drill: American Chopper returns to the Discovery Channel in winter 2018. The reality show, which was like All in the Family set in a custom motorcycle shop, aired 223 episodes from 2002 to 2012 on several different Discovery outlets. The longevity came in part from stormy dynamics on-screen and off: Paul Teutel, Sr and Paul Teutel, Jr argued so ferociously on the show and with the production team that the network canceled the show in 2010, then resurrected the program as Senior vs. Junior for two years before an abrupt final cancellation. A revamped show, Orange County Choppers, aired on CMT for one year before what we thought was permanent death.

Since giving up the bright lights, Paul Sr burned through stacks of money turning Orange County Choppers into a destination spot with a bowling alley and a restaurant. Paul Jr – in Rock Tavern, NY, just 12 miles away from his father in Newburgh, NY – stuck to high-dollar custom builds, the business proving less lucrative than before. Discovery tells us the reboot gets father and son together to “reclaim their preeminent bike brands and – hopefully, rebuild some sort of relationship.”

That relationship will undoubtedly chew on bikes, celebrities, and a lot of arguments about deadlines, money, and who’s been more successful than whom. We don’t know if Mikey or any of the previous support gang will return from suspended animation. More importantly, over the past five years the custom motorcycle business left choppers in its cafe racer mirrors and never looked back. In early 2018 we’ll discover if gold-studded tangerine gloss and 18-inch-wide rear tires can claw their way back into the public’s love. Until then, we’ll chuckle at one commenter’s sentiment regarding the show’s return, “Great! Can’t wait to watch it on my metal flake green TV, which by the way, leaks oil.”

A Baltimore jury found police officer Christopher Spivey not guilty of assaulting a suspect in an incident caught on police helicopter cameras.

Baltimore County officer Spivey was found not guilty of four counts of second degree assault on Thursday in a case built around infrared police helicopter footage.

The camera captured the stolen car chase and foot pursuit on January 25. After suspect Diamontae Tyquan Farrar, 20, had surrendered and was on the ground Spivey began kicking him. The officer was accused of excessive assault in the incident.

Video footage played in court on Tuesday shows Farrar running from the crashed car to a parking lot. Baltimore police had reportedly refused to release the helicopter footage before the trial.

The footage shows Farrar running in a carpark, where he stops and lies on the ground before the officers reach him. Spivey is seen running to Farrar and kicking him, even as other officers handcuff the suspect.

Spivey was also accused of spitting on Farrar.

The jury acquitted the officer within half an hour, and thanked the officer for his service after the trial, CBS Baltimore reports.  

Farrar, who is serving time for the theft, appeared in court and said he was kicked only twice and that the spit was accidental, and he wasn’t injured. The defense argued he hid his hands from police and resisted being handcuffed.

The Baltimore City Police helicopter captured the incident, and two officers, Edward Nero and John Bilheimer, testified that they were concerned by the video and decided to report it to their supervisors.

Nero was one of the six officers acquitted in the Freddie Gray case. Gray was arrested and fell into a coma in a police van. He died of spinal cord injuries after being shackled in the van without a seatbelt in 2015.

“Four not guilties in less than half an hour, 35 minutes, or whatever. I think it sends a powerful message as to the weight of this, or the merits of this case,” defense attorney Brian Thompson told media outside the court.

“We certainly hope that in the future they will investigate these matters more thoroughly before they charge a good cop like Chris Spivey,” he added.

“I take my responsibility to police the police very seriously,” Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger said after the trial. “I watched that video dozens of times before we made the decision to go forward. My decision will always be made based on the facts and the law.”

Spivey was suspended with pay during the trial.

A military-style helicopter came within meters of hitting a vehicle in Russia after it was filmed flying extremely low over a major highway.

Dashcam footage filmed in May captured the heart-stopping incident along the Rostov-Baku route, Gudermes, in Russia’s Chechen Republic. 

The startling clip shows two helicopters buzzing over the highway that runs between Russia and Azerbaijan.

One of the choppers pulls off an amazing feat of flying at speed right down the center of the road.

With vehicles traveling on both sides of the highway, one false move could have been devastating.

It is not clear why the helicopters were flying so low or who was operating them, though they appear similar to those among the Russian Air Force fleet.

When Shane Black revealed the cast of The Predator in a photo on Monday, one thing became abundantly clear: there was only one woman in that line-up of well-dressed and generally handsome gentlemen. But now, we know that Olivia Munn won’t be the only woman on the alien hunter’s to-kill list. She’s getting some company in the form of Yvonne Strahovski.

The news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter, who say that Strahovski will play the mother of Jacob Tremblay’s character, a “troubled boy who is accidentally drawn into the conflict with the fierce alien creatures by her ex-husband.” That ex-husband will be played by Logan and Narcos star Boyd Holbrook.

Additional story details remain scarce, especially since Black has denied the early rumors that the film is set in the suburbs. However, it should be noted that THR uses “creatures” and not “creature,” which raises a pretty good question: how many Predators are going to be menacing the cast in this movie? Because one was more than enough to turn most of the 1987 original’s ensemble into human trophies. I’m tickled at the thought of actors from Don’t Think Twice and Moonlight doing what Arnold Schwarzenegger could not and actually standing a chance against an entire team of Predators.

Anyway, Strahovski is best known for playing Sarah Walker on 91 episodes of Chuck, but she’s been a regular presence on television since then, going on to appear in Dexter, 24: Live Another Day, and The Astronaut’s Wives Club. She can be seen next in Hulu’s upcoming series adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale. Her film roles include I, Frankenstein, All I See is You, Manhattan Night, and The Guilt Trip.

Since she has plenty of experience playing tough women perfectly capable of fending for themselves, thank you very much, I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that The Predator isn’t just sticking her in a “worried mother” role. Although Black has specialized in making (usually pretty great) movies about tough men being tough men, last year’s The Nice Guys saw him creating one of the more memorable female characters of 2016 in Angourie Rice’s Holly March. Here’s hoping the trend continues. 

In addition to Strahovski, Holbrook, Tremblay and Munn, the cast of The Predator also includes Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Thomas Jane, and Alfie Allen. Cameras began rolling in Vancouver on Monday and the film is set for February 9, 2018 release date.
