One of them was stabbed more than 100 times. Another body was hung from a living room ceiling.

The killings were carried out by four members of a “once peaceful cult” known as the Manson Family, headed by ex-prisoner Charles Manson – said by those close to him to be “a monster beneath the surface”.

Now, for the first time, ITV will show unseen footage in Manson: The Lost Tapes, which must rank as one of the most chilling true crime documentaries you will ever watch.

Even though these hideous murders happened in the US almost 50 years ago, these extraordinary testimonies taken from those who were part of the murderous cult are as compelling as they are disturbing.

The late film-maker Robert Hendrickson was granted exclusive access to the group on Manson’s ranch just weeks after the murders were committed, interviewing members who were not directly involved in the killings.

His original film was released in 1973 but banned by a judge.

The archive footage has now been unearthed by British producer Simon Andreae and his two-part exposé features excerpts from 100 hours of the original, astonishing, footage.

From the outset, cult member Sandra Good sets the tone. As she runs her hand down a large bladed knife, she tells Hendrickson, “Whatever’s necessary to do, you do it. When somebody needs to be killed, there’s no wrong, you do it. And you move on and you kill whoever gets in your way. This is us.”

These cold words are uttered without remorse. During the making of the current film, former cult members Dianne Lake and Catherine Share were confronted with footage of their younger selves which took them straight back to a very disturbing period of their lives.

Dianne joined when she was 14 and, like many of the other youngsters in “the family”, had come from a difficult background.

“My mom and dad were not the warm, fuzzy, hugging variety. They really weren’t,” she says.

“I suppose I was looking for some affection… for a place where I was really loved.”

Recalling her arrival at the ranch, she says: “I walked in there, up the stairs, and two girls just starting screaming my name,‘Dianne! Dianne! Charlie, Dianne is here!’ “[The warmth of the welcome] was magical, the whole way it unfolded. It was like it was meant to be.”

Manson, who at 32 had spent more than half his life in prisons and institutions following a string of violent crimes including robbery and the rape of a young boy, was busy convincing members that he was a type of Jesus figure.

“It worked,” says Dianne.

“We did kind of think of ourselves as his disciples.”

When men joined the cult they were welcomed with sex by the young women.

Dianne recalls: “We were just having one of our get-togethers. You know, some music, that sort of thing.

We were sitting in a group, all naked. Then there was a knock at the door.

It turned out to be Paul Watkins [a new cult member]. Nancy and I just made him feel welcome. We encouraged him to have sex with us.”

Watkins, in footage from the 1960s, says: “Charlie told me they were my girls. They did look beautiful. He said he couldn’t handle them all by himself… It was the summer of ’68.”

He also revealed how, when it came to free love, Manson was the main attraction: “He said the whole universe was one great big ****.

Everything. He said it was everything… That’s all they ever did, was try to get Charlie to make love to them… Everything that you could possibly think of was done.”

The film shows his acolytes living on a diet of sex, scavenged food and drugs administered by Manson.

But there was glamour too. Dianne recalls: “Dennis Wilson, the Beach Boys drummer, once turned up in his Rolls with all these girls that he’d picked up hitchhiking, [who] were excited to be introduced to Charlie.

“There was a mutual admiration going on between Charlie and Dennis. They were both wild, they liked women and listening to music.

Dennis was kind of looking for spiritual guidance and I guess Charlie fitted the bill.”

DENNIS would later invite Charlie “and his family” to move in with him but this didn’t please the other Beach Boys.

“Dennis moved out of the house and we had to as well!” recalls Dianne, explaining how they all came to arrive at the ranch where the murders would be planned.

The 14-year-old’s adventures in free love took a dramatic turn for the worse when she discovered Manson’s dark side.

“When I first met Charlie, he expressed his love and adoration for me. It was a high, it was magic, love and joy. I stayed with Charlie because I wanted that again and again and again,” says Dianne.

But he subjected her to a brutal sexual assault. “I was feeling kind of neglected and I wanted him to make love to me,” she says.

“We went to a different part of the ranch and a gypsy caravan. But instead of making love to me he sodomised me, he raped me.

He was saying, ‘This is the way we do it in prison’. “It was more than just a rejection, he abused me, he hurt me. It was like, ‘Don’t you dare ask me for sex’ kind of response. I never asked him to make love to me again. Never.”

Catherine Share, nicknamed Gypsy, looks back on taking LSD administered by Manson: “I wasn’t aware of the fact that he was taking less or none at all,” she says. “I was aware of the fact that he always seemed like he was in control and I was not.”

Dianne also took acid with the cult and says, “I remember one trip when I crawled into the bus. And I swear to you, I thought I could see through the bus, like it was glass and could see through it out into the trees. And I remember seeing the forest, watching the trees grow and flowers bloom.That’s the kind of stuff that would happen when you took LSD.”

She adds: “Charlie didn’t take the acid trips with us, he just handed it out. So that gave him even more control. We just bought the whole Jesus thing. And there were probably 12 of us, too. We did think of ourselves as his disciples.”

In the original footage, Paul says: “It’d be more like fear, what we were experiencing. Charlie said that fear was love.

Charlie said that fear, love and awareness were the same thing. “The more fear you had, the more awareness you had, the more love you had.”

Ahead of the horrific events of August 1969, Manson was described as becoming increasingly paranoid and devised a plan – called Helter Skelter after The Beatles’ song – for what to do after a race war that he expected to unfold and place downtrodden black people at the top of society.

“He’d become obsessed with the White Album. Charlie would play it forwards and backwards, over and over again,” says Dianne. “He thought it was sending him a message. It was all crazy thinking.”

The “family” was trained in using weapons. Catherine says: “He taught us to hold a knife so it was, like, part of our fist and that’s how you do it with a shiv [razor] in prison. How to flick it open… We put oil on it and flicked it open like a switchblade. And it was going to be our ‘forever survival tool’.

“But all the while beneath the surface [with Charlie], there was a monster lurking.”

AND DIANNE adds: “I don’t remember the training really but [Charles] said ‘You stab and then you rip up’. That way you would hit as many vital organs as possible.”

Manson’s horrific plans were becoming more and more obvious. Three months before Manson hand-picked a group of disciples to begin the killings, he confided in Paul about how good it felt to kill.

“He said that one day, up in the mountains of Bel Air and in Beverly Hills, there would be some atrocious murders; that there would be blood splattered over everything. That people would be chopped to pieces and cut up with knives and there would be things written on the walls in blood.”

A 19-year-old girl’s body was allegedly chopped up and stuffed in a freezer after she was stabbed to death in a suspected honor killing at a £1.5 million home in South West London.

A 21-year-old woman, understood to be the cousin of the victim, was also injured in the attack and is in “serious but stable” condition in hospital.

She reportedly managed to escape with a knife wound to the neck. Hospital staff alerted police, who then went to the home to find the remains hidden in a freezer.

According to The Sun, police arrested three suspects, including the builder working on the house for the owners who live next door. They are reportedly questioning two men, 33 and 38, and a 29-year-old woman.

The perpetrator is believed to be the uncle of the 19-year-old and step-father of the other victim.

“The girls had got mixed up with a gang of guys. One wanted to marry one of the boys and her Pakistani family couldn’t take that,” a family friend of the owners told the tabloid.

“Whoever did this cut her up Jack the Ripper style.”

A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Daily Mail a man was arrested when he tried to flee the country from Dover.

“Relatives told me that the man was Asian and was caught at Dover trying to leave the country.

“I heard he kidnapped them both and chopped one of them up and put her in the freezer. I heard he slit the other one’s throat.”

Police had been called to the address earlier over fears for the welfare of the two women.

They carried out a search of the detached property, which the victim’s relative was reportedly renovating, and initially found nothing. They made the grim discovery during a second visit.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Price said police are working hard to understand the circumstances of this “despicable act” and establish the motive for the incident.

“At this early stage it is believed the two victims were taken to an address before being attacked.

“We also understand that the victims were known to their attackers.”

Those poor old Skywalkers have a terrible habit of losing limbs in the franchise.

Before anyone hauls us in front of The Jedi Council, of course nobody has officially said that Rey is part of the most famous amputation-prone pack in the galaxy, but seemed to give a pretty massive hint.

In fact, the image of the trainee Jedi not only seems to confirm her heritage it predicts exactly what is going to happen to her and her hand.

Even Daisy Ridley herself replied to the question of whether Rey would be injured in the next film: “Injured emotionally or physically? I’ll say… yes.”

The image in question shows Rey holding the iconic light blue Skywalker lightsaber.

Not only is this powerful artifact inextricably linked to one particular family, it also has an inexorably unbroken pattern of being lost along with the hand holding it.

Star Wars is slavishly committed to the concept of repeating patterns and Rey holding the Skywalker lightsaber will activate not one but two powerful patterns.

Firstly, both the previous wielders of the Jedi blade have lost their right arms in battle. Luke lost his forearm fighting Darth Vader, while Anakin lost his emtire arm at the shouldre in a brutal encounter with Count Dooku.

Secondly, both these iconic momenst happened in the second film of their respective trilogies, namely The Empire Strikes Back and Attack of the Clones.

Rey is holding the Skywalker lightsaber in the second film of the final trilogy – only one thing can possibly happen.

Further support for this theory came from an unofficial sighting on the Last Jedi set.

reported that one of his contacts saw compelling evidence of what is going to happen.

He said: “He saw Daisy Ridley on set… what he caught on her left arm was that it was actually covered by a green screen sleeve.”

Green screen technique are commonly used in the film industry to add special effects into a scene – for example a missing or mechanical arm. 

There have also been some detailed leaked reports of a climactic battle on Ach-To, with Rey and Luke facing Kylo Ren and his massed Knights of Ren. The unconfirmed reports suggest that Rey will be overwhelmed and this would be a likely moment for her to lose her arm, and possibly that slippery lightsaber.  

Let’s not forget that the unfortunate Anakin went on to lose every single limb at the end of The Return of the Sith.

Hopefully that is one pattern that won’t bear repeating.

The Last Jedi is out in UK cinemas on December 15.
