I had stopped in one Friday to pick my mom up on my way home from Hunter College, and while I was waiting, Steve came over. He told me that he used to stage-manage bands in England, and he had a show coming up in the city and needed a crew.

Then he said that my mother had mentioned to him I had some band experience. Followed by, “Would you like to work stage crew for The Clash at the end of May?”

The venue for the shows was Bonds International Casino, a massive second-floor dance club on Broadway between 44th and 45th streets. It had been a men’s clothing store for many years, one I had shopped at with my grandfather a decade or so earlier. Thirty years after The Clash appeared there, I would take my wife for dinner at the Bond 45 Restaurant, possibly making me the only person to have been a patron at all three Bonds incarnations.

For those who don’t remember, these Clash performances gained notoriety because the promoters oversold the shows, selling 3,400 tickets to each show when the facility was only rated for about 1,700. On the third day of shows, May 20, 1981, when there were two shows scheduled, the New York City Fire Department came in and shut the place down.

We dumped all 4 grams of uncut, pink Peruvian flake onto the large glass coffee table and cut it into 16 large, neat, even lines. We proceeded to snort the table clean.

The ensuing reaction by the disgruntled fans was called a “riot” by the media. I was there, manning a police barrier in front of the club, and I would call it more of a ruckus: A couple thousand annoyed teenagers milling about and yelling. The addition of a police presence, including mounted units, only added to the tensions. The band, being fan-centric, honored all tickets by scheduling additional shows, and the performances resumed on June 4. What had been eight scheduled days turned into 17 performances.

Toward the end of the run, there was a rumor going around that Mick Jagger would be coming to one of the shows. Part of the rumor was that the Rolling Stones were considering scheduling a short-notice, one-night performance at Bonds, and we would get to work the show.

One night before the doors opened, following several nights of no-shows by Jagger, we were all called up to the “booth,” where the muckety-mucks were gathered. They informed us that Jagger was indeed coming that night, and to be on our toes, keep an eye out for him and bring him up to the booth when he arrived.

Following the “briefing,” the eight of us in the crew chipped in $ 50 each to purchase 4 grams of coke from one of the many sources of exceptional drugs at our disposal. We dumped all 4 grams of uncut, pink Peruvian flake onto the large glass coffee table and cut it into 16 large, neat lines. We proceeded to snort the table clean, two massive lines per person. Each of us closed out our turn by wiping the remnants of our lines up with a finger and rubbing the residue on our gums.

This was just a warmup for the liquor the bartenders would give up, and the crystal-meth-filled capsules we had in our pockets. When we started to feel sluggish we would carefully open a capsule and then snort one side per nostril of its painful, face-stinging contents to keep going all night. Ever since the “pit,” a security barrier in front of the stage, had been taken down, I’d been placed at different locations depending on what was going on that night. One night I would be onstage, another I guarded the temporary sound recording area; one night backstage, another night out on the floor. I even ran a follow spotlight for one of the shows when a light guy didn’t show.

screen shot 2018 07 19 at 3.22.03 am

This particular night I was posted stage left, where a lot of guests would channel in and out. The doors opened, and the place filled. No Mick Jagger. The show started. Still no Jagger. I was not in a good mood, and the guests were all a royal pain in the ass. The opening bands had brought a bunch of people with them, and I had had my fill of babysitting these leeches.

The first band finished. No Jagger. The second band finished. Again, no Jagger. The Clash took the stage, and the crowd pushed forward. In front of me was a wall of people; behind me, guests of the opening acts trying to sneak backstage. Added to this was the constant flow of people in the audience who thought saying something cute, offering me drugs or a blow job, would get them backstage.

About half an hour into the set, some putz dressed like McGruff the Crime Dog in a fedora and beige jacket with the collar turned up marches right up to the rope and tries to push past me. I put my hand on his chest, gently backing him up, and politely said that the public was not allowed in the area.

He ducked his head and tried to push past again.

I backed him up again, less gently, and said, finger in his chest, “I am not kidding, pal. This area is off-limits!”

To my utter disbelief, the asshole goes for it for a third time. This time, I slid my hand up his chest, wrapped my fingers around his neck and lifted him up off the ground. I wasn’t actually choking him, but rather using my hand against his jaw for leverage and then lifting straight up, like gripping a bottle just under the cap ridge.

There I was, holding this guy off the ground by his neck, hoping to make a point to any other jerk who thought the rules did not apply to them, when he pulled up his hat to show his face, and croaked, “Please! You don’t understand!” I felt a little wave of nausea pass through me as it registered in my exhausted, drug-addled mind that I was holding Mick Jagger off the ground … by his neck. I immediately set him down, and did all of the appropriate apologizing and groveling.

He was extremely gracious about it, saying, “No, no, don’t worry about it, I know you were just doing your job …” and then he added the word “well” as he rubbed his neck.

I turned to the nearest asshole and told him not to let ANYONE past the rope or it was his ass when I got back, and then I escorted Jagger to the booth. I apologized one last time, and again he said, “No problem,” as he headed up the stairs. I never heard anything about it from anyone. Apparently Jagger did not tell them he had been manhandled, and I still had a job. The Stones, however, did not book a gig at Bonds.

There are 2 choke points that threaten oil trade between the Persian Gulf and East Asia https://briefnews.eu/there-are-2-choke-points-that-threaten-oil-trade-between-the-persian-gulf-and-east-asia/ https://briefnews.eu/there-are-2-choke-points-that-threaten-oil-trade-between-the-persian-gulf-and-east-asia/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 23:00:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/there-are-2-choke-points-that-threaten-oil-trade-between-the-persian-gulf-and-east-asia/ The flow of international trade has always been subject to geopolitical risk and conflicts. At all stages of the supply chain, trade inherently faces challenges posed by the geopolitical realities along a given route.

Some routes are more perilous and harder to navigate than others. One such trade route is the maritime path for transporting oil from Persian Gulf exporters to East Asian consumers. This route faces two major choke points that are unavoidable given geographic constraints.

map1Mauldin Economics

The Persian Gulf is a leading oil-producing region. It accounts for 30% of global supply. Meanwhile, East Asia is a major oil-consuming region. It accounts for 85% of the Persian Gulf’s exports (according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA)).

The two straits are geopolitical choke points because geographic limitations and political competition threaten access.

Choke Point #1: The Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is the main maritime route through which Persian Gulf exporters (Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) ship their oil to external markets. Only Iran and Saudi Arabia have alternative access routes to maritime shipping lanes.

Map2Mauldin Economics

The strait is 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, bordered by Iran and Oman. The EIA estimates that approximately 17 million barrels of oil per day—about 35% of all seaborne oil exports—pass through the strait.

This path is also the most efficient and cost-effective route through which these producers can transport their oil to East Asia. Persian Gulf countries depend heavily on revenue from these exports.

That’s why passage through the Strait of Hormuz is both an economic and a security issue. A disruption in the strait would impede the timely shipment of oil.

This would cause exporters to lose significant revenue, and importers would face supply shortages and higher costs. The longer the disruption, the greater the losses.

Disruptions could take place when Sunni and Shiite countries threaten to deny each other passage through the strait.

Shiite-majority Iran has threatened to close the strait and plant naval mines to assert its power over Saudi Arabia and other Sunni states. Saudi Arabia and its allies have conducted naval drills to show their willingness and ability to retaliate should Iran follow through.

Persian Gulf countries that depend on oil revenues have tried to mitigate this risk in two ways.

First, they’ve established alternate export routes. But the pipeline capacity is not enough to relieve dependence on the Strait of Hormuz.

Second, Persian Gulf countries have built security alliances with countries that have a vested interest in keeping the strait open. These alliances often involve the United States.

In 2016, the US received 18% of its oil imports from the Persian Gulf. As such, the US wants to maintain safe passage of exports through the strait.

Choke Point #2: The Strait of Malacca

The Strait of Malacca is the shortest sea route to move goods from the Persian Gulf to Asian markets. It is over one-third shorter than the closest alternative sea-based route.

Map3Mauldin Economics

Roughly a quarter of all oil transported by sea (more than 15 million barrels per day) passes through the Strait of Malacca. This makes it second only to the Strait of Hormuz in oil transport by volume.

The Strait of Malacca is 550 miles long and runs past Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. At its narrowest point, the strait is a mere 1.5 miles wide. This makes ships more susceptible to piracy (which is prevalent in the area) and blockades.

Both Japan and China’s economies rely heavily on oil imports that pass through the Strait of Malacca. Over 80% of China’s oil imports (by sea) and around 60% of Japan’s total oil imports currently pass through the strait.

That means open access through the strait is key to their economic security.

Japan and China have a long history of animosity and war in their attempts to be the dominant geopolitical power in the region. But, for one of them to block access to the strait would be a double-edged sword.

On one hand, restricting trade flow through the strait could be a way to inflict economic pain on a rival. This could lead to an economic downturn and subsequent domestic political problems for the rival.

On the other hand, this type of action could set a precedent for other countries to vie for control of the strait. This could put either Japan or China’s access at risk.

To secure their economic stability, Japan and China have pursued means to guarantee safe passage of oil through the strait.

Like Persian Gulf countries, Japan relies on its alliance with the US to guarantee free navigation of goods by sea. Since the Pacific Coast of the US conducts a significant amount of trade with East Asia, the US relies on its alliance with Tokyo to offset China’s power and any other potential threats in the region.

China’s strategy involves strengthening its military and political ties in the region. Beijing has forged strong political and economic relations with the countries that surround the Strait of Malacca, particularly Indonesia.

It is also in the process of building a large navy. Its goal is to gain more control of its surrounding seas.

Mitigating Risk

For both Persian Gulf exporters and East Asian consumers, the free passage of oil shipments is vital. But, two geopolitical choke points threaten this.

In the Strait of Hormuz, the main risk comes from the conflict between Sunni and Shiite powers in the region. In the Strait of Malacca, it is the regional rivalry between China and Japan.

All of these countries must take measures to mitigate their risk and secure free passage through the respective straits. Geopolitics not only explains why such measures are necessary, but also which of them are most suitable for the countries involved.

2 choke to death in pancake & huge donut eating contests within 24hrs https://briefnews.eu/2-choke-to-death-in-pancake-huge-donut-eating-contests-within-24hrs/ https://briefnews.eu/2-choke-to-death-in-pancake-huge-donut-eating-contests-within-24hrs/#respond Tue, 04 Apr 2017 00:50:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2-choke-to-death-in-pancake-huge-donut-eating-contests-within-24hrs/

A 20-year-old college sorority sister in Connecticut and a 42-year-old man in Colorado both choked to death within a 24-hour period after separate eating contests. One was a charity benefit involving pancakes, and the other was a huge donut challenge.

Caitlin Nelson was in critical but stable condition when she was rushed to a hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Thursday evening. She had reportedly eaten four or five pancakes when she began choking during a contest hosted by her sorority Kappa Delta at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, according to FoxNews.com and the Associated Press.

Nelson died Sunday at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, where she had been transferred Friday. The 20-year-old junior’s LinkedIn page showed she was certified in youth mental health first aid. Her father, James Nelson, was a police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, who died on September 11, 2001, responding to the terrorist attacks.

“It’s a tragic event that started out as something fun,” Fairfield police Lt. Bob Kalamaras said, according to AP. “It was just a tragic accident.”

The private Roman Catholic campus held a Mass and vigil Sunday night, while requesting the media and community respect the family’s privacy. The family did confirm that Nelson’s wishes to be an organ donor would be honored.

Early Sunday morning, over 1,800 miles away in Denver, Colorado, a 42-year-old man died choking in the lobby of Voodoo Doughnut after attempting to devour a half-pound (0.23 kilogram) donut in under 80 seconds. That’s the size of six regular donuts, according to the store.

Police and paramedics responded at 1:30am Sunday, but it was already too late for Travis Malouff. Witnesses told KUSA that people in the restaurant did not know how to perform the lifesaving Heimlich maneuver.

“They tried so hard to do everything. It was clear that nobody was trained and they were just reacting,” a witness said.

Malouff’s father, Curtis Malouff, told the local station that his son’s smile, energy and laugh are missed.

“If a challenge is there — he’d probably take it,” he said.

The NCAA Tournament is underway and already things have gotten ugly, only this time it was between two New Orleans teammates with one appearing to choke the other during an altercation.

The incident occurred late in the second half of the First Four matchup, with Mount St. Mary’s leading New Orleans. Travin Thibodeaux appeared to be upset at Christavious Gill for not passing the ball soon enough, leading to a three-second violation.

Thibodeaux confronted Gill on the way towards the bench during the ensuing timeout. When Gill tried to push Thibodeaux away, the 6-foot-5 Thibodeaux appeared to put both of his hands around the neck of Gill before others quickly intervened.

We never get a good angle of the altercation, but when the video is slowed down, it does appear that Thibodeaux’s hands are around the neck of Gill momentarily.

Mount St. Mary’s went on to win the game 67-66.

The youngster was just 16 when Seifeddine Rezgui Yacoubi opened fire on tourists near the city of Sousse and today, he appeared on the show to talk about his ordeal following the closure of the inquest into the attack.

Phillip told Owen – who lost his grandfather, uncle and brother in the attack – that he understood recounting the horrific day would be traumatic for him and he could stop the interview at any time.

“Then the noise, it’s not a noise that you’d recognise straight away. When I first heard it, I thought it was fire crackers. Gun fire is not your first thought when you’re on holiday.

“It’s when people start to run that you think ‘What’s happening?'”

He went on to reveal that he was with his brother Joel, 19, when people started to run from the pool area of the hotel they were staying in. They searched for his grandfather Charles, 78, and uncle Adrian, 44.

Owen explained: “We left as a four but we didn’t get any help from anyone…”
