Lauren Boebert
Rep. Lauren Boebert.

  • Rep. Lauren Boebert was reading a passage from Romans that referred to "wanton killing."
  • But she pronounced the word like "wonton" — the Chinese dumpling.
  • Earlier this year, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had a similar slip-up with "gazpacho" and "Gestapo."

Rep. Lauren Boebert confused the words "wanton" and "wonton" while reading a passage from the Bible, a video shows.

Boebert was reading a passage from Romans that referred to "wanton killing," meaning reckless killing. However, she pronounced it like "wonton" — the Chinese dumpling.

A video of the slip-up was posted by left-wing activist Twitter account PatriotTakes on Wednesday.

"I don't know what a wonton killing is," Boebert said after mispronouncing the word from the Bible reading, drawing laughter from the crowd. "I'm going to have to look that one up."

Boebert was speaking at at a Truth & Liberty Coalition's conference on September 9. The nonprofit was cofounded by right-wing pastor Andrew Wommack.

Earlier this year, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had a similar slip-up with "gazpacho" and "Gestapo." In February, Greene accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of having "gazpacho police," confusing a cold Spanish soup with Nazi Germany's secret police.

Boebert's gaffe prompted some mocking responses online.

"Wonton killing is a shameful abuse of our civil right by the gazpacho police," wrote one person on Twitter.

Former GOP Rep. Denver Riggleman took to Twitter, writing, "Everyone should download the hit song 'Wonton Violence' by the Notorious MSG to show solidarity."

Boebert did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment that was sent outside regular business hours.

  • Russian commodity giants Rosneft, Polyus, and Rusal have recently issued bonds in Chinese yuan.
  • Trade between the two countries has grown, with Russia imports to China up 59% on-year in August.
  • Russia's finance ministry is also considering issuing bonds in the Chinese yuan amid sanctions.

Some Russian companies are issuing bonds denominated in the Chinese yuan amid sanctions over the war in Ukraine.

State-owned oil giant Rosneft was the latest to offer 15 billion yuan, or $ 2.1 billion, in a bond offering, Interfax reported on Tuesday. This followed a 4.6 billion yuan issuance from Polyus, Russia's largest gold producer, in August.

Just weeks earlier in July, Russian aluminum giant Rusal issued 2 billion yuan of bonds. Demand for the bonds was more than double what was offered, the company said on July 29.

"It seems natural to us to choose yuan-denominated bond placement, given the current situation on the financial market," Alexei Grenkov, the head of Rusal's corporate finance, said at the time.

Russia's finance ministry is also considering issuing bonds in the Chinese yuan, Vedomosti business newspaper reported on August 23, citing a source close to the government. The process could take up to two years, the media outlet added.

Russia's interest in yuan-denominated settlements comes as some Russian banks have been banned from SWIFT, the Belgium-based messaging service that lets banks around the world communicate about cross-border transactions.

Since Russia and China have been trying to establish alternatives to the US dollar hegemony for years, they are also taking this opportunity to boost the use of alternative payments systems at a time when trade between the two is growing. Russian exports to China rose 60% in August from a year ago, while Chinese shipments to Russia grew 27% in the same period, according to Reuters' calculations based on Chinese customs data.

Earlier this month, Russian state-energy giant Gazprom said it will begin taking rubles and yuan payments, instead of euros, for natural-gas exports to China.

The ties between the two countries could deepen this week, as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet at a regional summit in central Asia.

"Yuan instruments are a great alternative to the dollar. We have a positive outlook on the yuan — its liquidity is expected to increase, its international convertibility is expected to improve, and its risks from sanctions will remain limited," analysts at Russia's BCS Global Markets, a financial services firm, wrote in a note on August 18.

Republican lawmakers have warned Apple that it will face intense scrutiny from Congress if the California company procures memory chips from a controversial Chinese semiconductor manufacturer for the new iPhone 14.

Marco Rubio, Republican vice-chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said they were alarmed following a media report that Apple would add Yangtze Memory Technologies Co to its list of suppliers for Nand flash memory chips that are used to store data on smartphones.

ā€œApple is playing with fire,ā€ Rubio told the Financial Times. ā€œIt knows the security risks posed by YMTC. If it moves forward, it will be subject to scrutiny like it has never seen from the federal government. We cannot allow Chinese companies beholden to the Communist party into our telecommunications networks and millions of Americans’ iPhones.ā€

A retired tech tycoon has pledged $33 million to raise an army of civilian marksmen and ‘black bear warriors’ to defend Taiwan from a Chinese invasion https://briefnews.eu/a-retired-tech-tycoon-has-pledged-33-million-to-raise-an-army-of-civilian-marksmen-and-black-bear-warriors-to-defend-taiwan-from-a-chinese-invasion/ https://briefnews.eu/a-retired-tech-tycoon-has-pledged-33-million-to-raise-an-army-of-civilian-marksmen-and-black-bear-warriors-to-defend-taiwan-from-a-chinese-invasion/#respond Fri, 02 Sep 2022 10:01:55 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/a-retired-tech-tycoon-has-pledged-33-million-to-raise-an-army-of-civilian-marksmen-and-black-bear-warriors-to-defend-taiwan-from-a-chinese-invasion/ - A colourful Taiwanese tycoon unveiled plans September 1 to train more than three million "civilian warriors" to help defend the democratic island in the event of a Chinese invasion, donating 33 million USD of his own money.
Retired tech tycoon Robert Tsao also announced that he had regained his Taiwanese identity after giving up his Singaporean citizenship.

  • A retired Taiwanese tech mogul is pledging his millions to fund training for civilian troops.
  • He says he'd pay a private military training outfit to train 3 million civilians for three years.
  • Taiwan has around 88,000 active-duty ground troops, compared to China's 1.04 million professionals.

A retired Taiwanese tech tycoon said on Thursday that he plans to use his own wealth to train more than 3 million "civilian warriors" to defend against a Chinese invasion.

Robert Tsao, 75, intends to use $ 33 million of his own cash to fund the effort, according to Taiwan News, an English-language news outlet on the self-governing democratic island.

Tsao also announced that he was renouncing his Singaporean citizenship in favor of regaining his Taiwanese identity in light of China's repeated military threats to Taiwan, per Taiwan News.

According to the outlet, Tsao said his money would go toward having the civilian troops trained for three years by the Kuma Academy, a private military outfit also known as the "Black Bear Academy."

The eventual 3 million "black bear warriors" could then work alongside Taiwan's military, Agence France Presse reported, citing Tsao.

Tsao also said that $ 13 million from the sum would be used to train 300,000 "marksmen," the outlet reported.

Tsao became one of Taiwan's most prominent business magnates after founding United Microelectronics Corps in 1980. He no longer holds a position in the company.

As Insider reported, Taiwan has around 88,000 active-duty ground troops, compared to mainland China's 1.04 million professional soldiers. However, the island also has around 1.5 million reservists — civilians who have completed a four-month mandatory national service.

It's unclear if the "black bear warriors" mentioned by Tsao comprise reservists who will receive extra training, or if they are other civilians.

China-Taiwan tensions have soared since US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited the self-governing island in early August, despite Beijing's threats of military action. China's People's Liberation Army has so far responded to Pelosi's visit by carrying out live-fire drills in positions around Taiwan and sending ships and fighter jets into the areas around the island.

On Wednesday, Taiwan vowed to counterattack without exception should any of Beijing's forces crossed into the island's waters or airspace.

Chinese regulators reportedly axed 8,000 malicious apps https://briefnews.eu/chinese-regulators-reportedly-axed-8000-malicious-apps/ https://briefnews.eu/chinese-regulators-reportedly-axed-8000-malicious-apps/#respond Mon, 28 Jan 2019 00:43:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chinese-regulators-reportedly-axed-8000-malicious-apps/

China’s cyber regulators are tightening their grip on the country’s infamously censored internet even more, and it includes keeping a closer eye on games and apps. According to Reuters, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has deleted 7,873 mobile apps it deems malicious. Some of those applications reportedly overcharged users, while others stole their information.

One of the apps affected by the purge was Fruit Ninja, though it’s not entirely clear if CAC axed the original game or one of its many copycats. That deleted Fruit Ninja apparently tricked people into signing up for paid services. There was also at least a couple of games with intentionally provocative names — Bathroom Goddess and Naughty Housemaid — deleted for information theft, spamming and forced downloads.

In addition to the app purge, the CAC said in a statement that it has removed over 7 million pieces of information online. It also criticized a Tencent news app for posting “vulgar and low-brow information,” which exemplifies the internet company’s issues with the government. If you’ll recall, China put its video game approvals on hold after establishing an ethics committee to oversee the industry. The first batch of titles approved after that almost-year-long freeze didn’t include anything from Tencent.

Chinese tech at CES: Politics is temporary, business is permanent https://briefnews.eu/chinese-tech-at-ces-politics-is-temporary-business-is-permanent/ https://briefnews.eu/chinese-tech-at-ces-politics-is-temporary-business-is-permanent/#respond Fri, 11 Jan 2019 22:43:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chinese-tech-at-ces-politics-is-temporary-business-is-permanent/

At the start of 2018, the US imposed a series of tariffs on Chinese products ranging from solar cells through to home appliances. It was the escalation of rhetoric between the two countries over fears that the US-China trade deficit had become too high. According to US Census Bureau statistics for 2018, the US bought $ 447 billion worth of Chinese goods, but only $ 102.4 billion went the opposite way. An additional $ 200 billion tariff package targeting the technology industry was due to be levied on January 1st, 2019.

This second wave of tariffs was halted pending the outcome of a lengthy trade summit between the US and China. Whatever decision is reached will have enormous consequences for producers and consumers, who may see prices rise and investments delayed. That could lead to reduced growth, stock market drops and people losing their jobs, especially in the high-output, low-margin component industry.

Some Chinese companies attending CES are reticent to talk about what could happen in the coming weeks. An American employee of a Chinese company said that their CEO had told them all to avoid talking politics at the show. Several other businesses were similarly unwilling to speak publicly on the matter. The implication was that they may face reprisals from Beijing for engaging with a journalist.

“[a trade war] would be bad for all of us, and hurt all of us.”

Breswell Su, sales manager at a large Chinese electronics conglomerate, said that tariffs are a “huge concern.” He explained that, as the “economic situation gets intense,” the imposition of tariffs will only be one of a number of problems. A fall in the value of the yuan, for example, will increase costs and squeeze the industry’s already-slender margins. He added that companies will look to survive on tiny margins and attempt to recoup their losses by pushing harder into other territories.

Employees at one Shenzhen-based maker of battery packs and headphones felt that the trade war would not affect them. Representatives said that their products may avoid tariffs altogether because they’re shipped via Hong Kong. From there, hardware is delivered to an Amazon warehouse, which fulfils its global shipping obligations.

Schumacher Electric produces battery charging equipment and has manufacturing facilities in China, Mexico and Belgium. Product Engineer Linh Nguyen said, if tariffs are imposed, his company will simply make sure that hardware imports to the US come from the Mexico plant. “Politics is temporary,” he added, saying that the situation may change tomorrow, so it’s a responsibility for businesses to be flexible.

It’s not just tariffs that businesses have to worry about. A trade war-caused fall in the value of the yuan, for example, will increase costs and squeeze the industry’s already-slender margins.

South China Morning Post

Another individual who declined to be named said that the tariffs may not have as negative an impact “if everybody on the playing field is affected.” If all Chinese businesses are slapped with the charges, then, the impact on competitiveness may be negligible.

Wenjuan Li, Marketing Director of Made In China, has been advocating for an end to the hostilities, even talking to the Chinese government. She said that the tariffs are a “big concern for Chinese suppliers,” many of which are either racing to get products into the US before the deadline, or avoiding shipping there at all. She added that, in her opinion, a trade war would be “bad for all of us, and would hurt [all of] us … we just want to do business.”

One of the issues often raised in the words between the US and China is the latter’s apparently lax attitude toward intellectual property law. The country has a reputation for producing lookalike gadgets, and is often seen to copy the designs created by US companies. Li said that “the US has complicated policies that suppliers in China do not understand,” and that they are not “deliberately infringing.”

At the time of writing, the trade talks between the US and China are still ongoing, with The Wall Street Journal reporting on positive notes emerging from the summit. It remains unclear how the negotiations will end, and how much either side is willing to concede in their pursuit of good relations. According to CNBC, China is likely to be a bigger loser than the US should any trade war escalate, which could harm some, or all of the businesses exhibiting at the show.

9 Hollywood movies that dominated the Chinese box office in 2018, including some that underperformed in the US https://briefnews.eu/9-hollywood-movies-that-dominated-the-chinese-box-office-in-2018-including-some-that-underperformed-in-the-us/ https://briefnews.eu/9-hollywood-movies-that-dominated-the-chinese-box-office-in-2018-including-some-that-underperformed-in-the-us/#respond Mon, 31 Dec 2018 20:46:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/9-hollywood-movies-that-dominated-the-chinese-box-office-in-2018-including-some-that-underperformed-in-the-us/ aquaman 2 warner brosWarner Bros.

  • The Chinese box office has become an essential part of the success of some of Hollywood’s biggest movies.
  • Movies that underwhelmed in the US, like “Rampage,” rebounded in China. Others, like “Aquaman,” dominated the global box office thanks to huge box office in China.
  • China is projected to dethrone the US as the world’s biggest theatrical market by 2022.

The US box office broke records in 2018 thanks to blockbusters like “Black Panther” and surprises like “A Quiet Place.” But the international box office, primarily China, is still essential for Hollywood, and 2018 proved that.

China has approved an unexpected number of Hollywood movies this month in an effort to reach its 2018 box office goal of $ 8.7 billion by year’s end, Bloomberg recently reported. China still relies on many imported movies, but it’s fast catching up to the US in terms of its box office. The country is projected to surpass the US as the world’s biggest theatrical market by 2022, according to a report from Ampere Analysis released in November.

Movies that underwhelmed in the US, like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s “Rampage,” rebounded in China. It grossed $ 101 million in the US, but $ 156 million in China. “The Meg,” another monster movie, made $ 530 million worldwide, boosted by its $ 153 million take in China.

“Venom,” Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off, overcame terrible reviews to become a global hit, propelled by its Chinese box office. Despite a 28% Rotten Tomatoes critic score, “Venom” is the fifth highest-grossing movie in the world in 2018 with $ 855 million. $ 270 million of that came from China.

But another huge comic-book movie could swim past “Venom” any day now. Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman” is currently at $ 750 million worldwide, and is eyeing over $ 900 million before it leaves theaters. It’s grossed nearly $ 190 million in the US, but $ 232 million in China, thanks to a rare early release ahead of its domestic debut.

Chinese audiences love monster movies, Exhibitor Relations senior box-office analyst Jeff Bock told Business Insider earlier this year, and some of China’s top Hollywood movies fall into that category, like “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “Aquaman,” “Venom,” “The Meg,” and “Rampage.”

“Monster movies are bonafide box-office gold in China,” Bock said.

But Chinese audiences also flocked to the theater for the likes of “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” showing that it’s not all about monster mayhem.

Nine Hollywood movies entered the top 20 at the Chinese box office this year, according to Box Office Mojo. We’ve rounded them up, including the Chinese, domestic, and worldwide box office for each.

China is set to become the first nation to explore the far side of the moon, after Chang’e-4 lunar probe entered a planned orbit, ahead of its much-anticipated landing on the unexplored part of Earth’s satellite.

“The probe has entered an elliptical lunar orbit, with the perilune [closest point] at about 15 km and the apolune [maximum distance] at about 100 km,” the China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced Sunday.

The Chang’e-4 probe, consisting of a lander and a rover, was launched on December 8. It is now up to its ground control to determine the “proper time” for the Chinese lunar exploration mission to make a touchdown on the far side of the moon, the space agency said. The probe’s descent will be aided by a communications relay satellite, the Queqiao, which China deployed back in May.

If the landing is successful China will enter the history books and proceed to explore the composition of an unexplored region of the moon to learn more about its formation and history. The far side has long fascinated scientists after being first photographed by the Soviet space probe Luna 3 in 1959. Whether or not this mission proves a success, Beijing plans to land astronauts on the moon by 2030.

Chinese schools keep tabs on kids with ‘intelligent uniforms’ https://briefnews.eu/chinese-schools-keep-tabs-on-kids-with-intelligent-uniforms/ https://briefnews.eu/chinese-schools-keep-tabs-on-kids-with-intelligent-uniforms/#respond Sat, 29 Dec 2018 12:19:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chinese-schools-keep-tabs-on-kids-with-intelligent-uniforms/

Even schoolkids can’t escape China’s increasing obsession with surveillance. Over 10 schools in the country’s southwestern Guizhou province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have made students wear “intelligent uniforms” from Guanyu Technology in the name of improving attendance and safety. Each uniform has two chips that indicate when a student is entering or exiting school grounds, and automatically sends that data to both parents and teachers. Leave without permission and an automatic voice alarm will make it patently clear you’re a truant.

Kids can’t think of playing hooky by swapping uniforms, either. Each uniform is linked to a given child’s face, and facial recognition at the school entrance will raise an alert if there’s a mismatch. The chips in the uniforms can survive 500 washing cycles and temperatures upward of 150C (302F), and they’re also useful for purchases.

If this sounds like a privacy nightmare, you guessed correctly. Attendance rates have improved since the technology quietly went into service in 2016, according to school principal Lin Zongwu, but it also doesn’t allow for the slightest deviance in behavior. And did we mention that the system can find students after school? Lin noted that staff merely “choose not to” track children outside of school hours. It wouldn’t take much for an unscrupulous faculty member or government officials to track pupils beyond class and create a particularly dystopian childhood.
