TNT’s Snowpiercer this Monday will answer a burning question amidst the Freeze, by catching viewers up on Melanie Cavill’s trek to the Breslauer Research Station — and revealing why it is she failed to “ping” the latest weather balloon to be released.

While recapping Melanie’s arduous adventure, the dystopian drama will also flash back to prior to the titular train’s departure, revealing the specific circumstances that led to both Wilford and Alex being left behind.

TVLine spoke with series star recent Performer of the Week Jennifer Connelly about the harrowing Melanie-centric hour ahead….

TVLINE | When last we saw Melanie, she had said a sad goodbye to Alex, hopped off the train with her sled and was ready to trek through the tundra. Most simply said, “How goes it?”
[Chuckles] It’s a mixed bag. As you might expect, there are some obstacles along the way, there are some unforeseen encounters and events and challenges. But she’s really put to the test, and I think that she rises to the occasion.

TVLINE | Will the show “rewind” a bit to reveal what happened as soon as she left the train?
Yes, you meet up with her and follow her on her journey from when she leaves the train and begins her epic snow crossing to the station. And then, it’s all about her voyage of discovery, trying to gather this information so that they can get off that train and find a place to start again on Earth.

Snowpiercer Big Alice

TVLINE | Talk about these epic treks through the snow. What does that actually look like for Jennifer Connelly, on set? What are you trudging through?
I was trudging through some synthetic material that was being blown by massive fans inside sound stages in Vancouver, [against a] green screen. Most of the show is practical locations, where we’re filming inside these train cars and in these beautifully designed sets. And once I was inside the research station, it was that way as well. But for the snowy journey, that was on a green screen — although they did pick up some footage without me, out on a glacier.

TVLINE | One of the first thoughts I had as soon as Melanie embarked on this trip was that I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s not alone when she gets there. That seems like the kind of thing the show would do….
Yes, maybe…. Maybe somebody, or something, is there.

TVLINE | Would you almost describe her ordeal at the weather station as like Matt Damon’s The Martian? Is she going to have to “science” some stuff?
She is going to science the heck out of the problem while she’s on her own in a hostile environment, so I can see why you make the comparison. It’s pretty cool, and I have a lot of admiration for that. My [23-year-old] son is an engineer, and I was thinking, “God, wouldn’t it be cool to be just a little bit like Kai?” And I got to pretend I was a bit like Kai in this episode.

Snowpiercer Wilford Melanie

TVLINE | The promo for this week suggests that we will get some flashbacks to pre-Freeze times. What sorts of things will we learn?
The Melanie  that we met at the beginning of Season 1 was a very different woman than we’re spending time with now, and we’ve been following this process of her being able to drop these facades and get back to who she really is, and get back to her original purpose. In this episode, we go much deeper than we have before and we explore what happened in the moments leading up to the train leaving, and how it happened that Alexandra was left behind. We get to understand a bit about the history between Wilford and Melanie,  and what exactly led to her decision to take the train from him.

Snowpiercer 2x03

TVLINE | We gave you and Rowan Blanchard Performer of the Week for that episode where Melanie and Alex truly reconnected. Were you happy that that happened sooner rather than later? Because when we first met Alex, I was like, “Oh, man, I hope they’re not at loggerheads for half of the season.” It was nice that they shared those moments just a few episodes in.
I really liked that, yes — and thank you, by the way, that was very nice. I thought it was good because I thought it was a believable balance. I would’ve been really frustrated if it was like, “Oh, we’re just going to forget all this history that we had and assume a relationship that isn’t real,” because that wouldn’t have felt genuine either. That was a huge number of years that have gone by without them actually knowing each other, so I feel like it needed to be earned a bit. But they both want that relationship so much, so I thought it was really moving when they do come together. It was really satisfying. You want that to happen, and I wanted that to happen so much.

RELATED STORIES

Season 2 of TNT’s Snowpiercer pulled out of the proverbial station this Monday night, wasting no time in teasing new inter-train dynamics while dropping the tiniest hint of a major development.

Caught up to and latched onto by suped-up supply train Big Alice, the 994 car-strong Snowpiercer how has a 40-car monkey on its back. Melanie’s not-dead daughter Alex barked out demands, issuing a “shopping list” (food, beer, books, hens, and Mr. Wilford’s favorite scotch, etc;) to be filled by Andre & Co., lest her boss uncouple the trains and leave Snowpiercer dead in the frozen water.

Meanwhile, Melanie — who had been thrown from the train when last we tuned in — crawled beneath the coupling and went about severing Big Alice’s connection to Snowpiercer’s systems. After a mutant-looking giant from Big Alice lugged away their demanded foodstuffs, Big Alice fired up its engines and the trains began moving. Melanie darted between two wheels into the drifts alongside the track, where she realized her suit had been punctured and she was freezing to death. As she lay there, a snowflake drifted onto the face of her helmet. This is a big deal, we were reminded when she reported back to Ben, because the world had been rendered too cold for it to even snow. So… is the iced-over Earth beginning to thaw? Before clambering aboard the accelerating train, Mel scooped up a vial of the freshly fallen white stuff.

Melanie was welcomed aboard Big Alice by Kevin, a bitter former colleague who zapped her with a cattle prod and then led her upstairs to Mr. Wilford’s suite, where she was also reunited with his dog, Jupiter. Melanie egged Wilford to tell all — of how Big Alice waited for its moment to pounce, taking a shortcut using test track in the Rocky Mountains before intercepting Snowpiercer in Chicago. Wilford, though, only wants one thing: the “keys” to Snowpiercer. And if he doesn’t get them, he will “drop anchor” and grind his old train to a sub-zero halt.

Snowpiercer alex

Just then, Alex arrives, and while Melanie is stunned and overjoyed see her daughter alive, Alex is “distinctly underwhelmed.” Melanie explains how she sent people to get Alex, grandma and grandpa, but they never came back. Alex, though, only cares about apprising Wilford of the “shambles” of a situation on the other train, including how someone named Layton is in charge (with help from “that blonde in housekeeping”), and how she saw no jackboots. She then has Kevin take her mom to the brig.

Andre meanwhile has gone about surveying the new world order, making sure that enough people are minding the tail, which is now a “borderland.” During a council meeting in the Night Car, Ruth suggests that Melanie is “working things out” with Wilford, but Andre maintains, “A 40-car parasite does not call the shots around here” — and that, though tired from the revolution they just fought, they need to hit Big Alice “before they hit us.” After the meeting, some tailies bully Zarah about selling out Josie, but Andre breaks things up, during which it comes out that Zarah is pregnant with his child. Ruth is a bit tickled by the idea of a baby being born on Snowpiercer (and the “hope” that it brings), so she safely sets up the parents-to-be in a First Class home that had been vacated by an old couple who Cyanide’d their way out of the revolution. At Ruth’s urging, Andre addresses the train via the PA system, saying that given the new developments, they must put their democracy experiment on hold and “extend martial law until further notice.”

Alex visits Melanie in the brig, saying that she remembers “less and less of the old world.” She explains how Grandma and Grandpa wouldn’t leave with the men that Melanie sent, and Alex didn’t want to leave them behind. Alex then quizzes her mom about the snow sample found in her snowsuit. Melanie claims that she was simply curious, having not been outside the train in seven years, but Alex feels she is being lied to. Melanie is led to Big Alice’s makeshift medical clinic, where a pair of daffy doctors tend to her gnarly bit of frostbite by applying what they call Goop, a “breakthrough” synthetic-tissue salve that will heal and leave no scar.

Snowpiercer Recap Season 2 Premiere

Meanwhile on Snowpiercer, Pike and a Big Alice counterpart on the other side of the door begin bartering — fresh food, for example, for a QP of “Amazing Alice” marijuana. Andre eventually (and quite literally) catches wind of what’s going on, but sees an opportunity. He has Pike initiate another trade, except this time when the door unlocks, a small army of Snowpiercer passengers (Snow-men?) heave and jam it open, before storming the other train. Andre, Till et al make quick progress through the first couple of cars, only to be stopped cold by that mutated mountain of man, who somehow is impervious to the sub-zero outside air that he begins blasting the attackers with.

Wilford, fresh out of the tub and in the midst of dinner with Melanie, gets wind of the incursion, but scoffs at the plan to hold hostage Kevin, of all people, to trade for Melanie. He then rails at Melanie about how she was “fixing tractors on a farm” at age 17 when he lifted her out of “pig s–t” and invited her to help him build this new world. He drags Melanie to the engine, and orders Alex to bring the trains to a full stop. He threatens to uncouple the trains and pull Big Alice away, unless Melanie gets Layton to surrender. When Wilford gives the order, Melanie tells Alex not to comply, saying “a whole world will die. You don’t want that on conscience.”

Undeterred, Alex goes ahead and flips the switch… and it triggers an explosion up train, at the coupling. As we saw earlier, Melanie had planted a sticky bomb when she was outside, and now Alex is unable to disconnect Big Alice from Snowpiercer. The trains are permanently attached. Admittedly impressed by her mom, Alex quips to Wilford, “She got you,” and he begrudgingly gives the order for the trains to resume moving — while Andre aboard Snowpiercer observes, “It’s going to be a long, cold war.”

What did you think of Snowpiercer’s return, Melanie’s masterful move, and the prospect of a welcome global warming?

Sabrina’s Final Chilling Adventures Are Her Darkest (and Deadliest) Yet https://briefnews.eu/sabrinas-final-chilling-adventures-are-her-darkest-and-deadliest-yet/ https://briefnews.eu/sabrinas-final-chilling-adventures-are-her-darkest-and-deadliest-yet/#respond Thu, 31 Dec 2020 15:36:46 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/sabrinas-final-chilling-adventures-are-her-darkest-and-deadliest-yet/

Friendly warning, witches: We’re about to break down Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s Part 4 premiere. Don’t want spoilers? You know what to do.

Darkness is the magic word in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s final eight episodes, and it’s uttered approximately 10,000 times in the first hour alone.

The Darkness, as it turns out, is one of eight Eldritch Terrors that Father Blackwood — sorry, make that “Reverend Lovecraft” — has unleashed upon an unsuspecting Greendale. (When will this town learn? Always. Be. Suspecting.)

And as darkness so often does on supernatural teen dramas, it manifests in forms both metaphorical and physical. In addition to the arrival of some murderous miners, Sabrina and Ambrose also discover a goopy pit of literal despair deep within the mines. Frankly, we’re just glad to see that Malivore is getting some work while Legacies is on hiatus.

When it becomes apparent that Sabrina isn’t powerful enough to stop the Capital-D Darkness by herself, she turns to a face that couldn’t be more familiar: her own! Sabrina Morningstar — who has fallen head over hooves for Caliban, by the way — offers her services without hesitation, despite the inherent danger of the two Sabrinas spending any prolonged amount of time together. According to Ambrose, the results could be “catastrophic.” And as you’ll see in later episodes, he’s not exaggerating.

Alas, even The Power of Two™ fails to generate enough light, so the Sabrinas turn to their aunts — and to Hecate, the latest source of the coven’s power — at the Academy of Unseen Arts. (Question for the group: How many different deities has this coven pledged its allegiance to over the years? If those students knew what was good for them, they would transfer to literally any other magical institution in existence. May we suggest the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted?)

With this first Eldritch Terror behind them, the Sabrinas can rest easy… but not for long. From resurrected enemies and twisted new foes to multiple weddings and unexpected musical numbers (get ready to rock, you guys!), there’s still plenty of fresh hell awaiting our favorites in the show’s fourth and final chapter.

Also worth discussing…

* Part 4 finds the titular teenage witch single and ready to mingle, with two potential love interests presenting themselves in the premiere alone. Though she initially turns down offers from both Carl and Melvin, Sabrina has a change of heart by the end of the hour, ultimately asking both boys out on separate dates. And can you blame her for wanting to get back in the game? With everyone else in her life now paired off — Harvey and Roz, Theo and Robin, and now Nick and Prudence — she’s becoming something of a third wheel.

* WICCA’s petition for a sex education class at Baxter High results in the first of several Riverdale references in Part 4. “At Riverdale, they have condom machines in the bathroom!” Roz informs her fellow group members. We’ll have more on those references — as well as the large-scale crossover that we would have seen in Part 5 — in the coming days.

* This premiere sets the tone for what is easily the show’s darkest run of episodes yet. Major events go down in these final eight hours; relationships change forever, fan-favorite characters die, and if you thought the mythology was dense before… heaven help you.

How do you feel about the setup for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s final episodes? Grade the premiere below, then drop a comment with more of your thoughts. (And if you’ve seen beyond Episode 1, try not to spoil anything for those who haven’t.)

Holby City: Fletch and Essie’s exit ‘sealed’ as fans predict a chilling double death twist https://briefnews.eu/holby-city-fletch-and-essies-exit-sealed-as-fans-predict-a-chilling-double-death-twist/ https://briefnews.eu/holby-city-fletch-and-essies-exit-sealed-as-fans-predict-a-chilling-double-death-twist/#respond Thu, 02 Jul 2020 05:55:32 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/holby-city-fletch-and-essies-exit-sealed-as-fans-predict-a-chilling-double-death-twist/

Holby City aired emotion scenes on Tuesday evening, as Adrian “Fletch” Fletcher was rushed into surgery following his cancer diagnosis. He had been suffering from an unknown health issue which caused him to blackout at work.

Since booking himself in for a test, it was then revealed the Head of Nursing has prostate cancer, which left him shocked and totally devastated.

To make matters worse, his close friend Essie Di Lucca (Kaye Wragg) is also undergoing gruelling chemotherapy for a new brain tumour and now fans are speculating that the two of them could bow out of Holby in the worst way possible.

As Fletch was rushed to theatre, Essie tried to keep his daughter Evie distracted as she watched on in horror.

After a heart to heart, the situation got all too much for Essie, who later broke down in tears at the thought of her pal going through the same thing.

She was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2018, and had to undergo a hysterectomy to survive.

The news tormented her as she became more fearful of losing the chance of becoming a mum.

Speaking about her cancer storyline, actress Kaye Wragg who plays Essie, told What’s On TV: “At first, Essie thought ‘I’m going to get through this’. But because her cancer is very aggressive, she needs a very potent level of chemo, which made her very poorly.

“The side-effects really knocked her sideways, so she wanted to stop the chemo just to feel normal again. In her head, anything was better than how she was feeling at that time.”

She added: “Essie needed someone to tell her not to give up – and that person was Fletch.”

After it was revealed that Fletch would also be suffer from the relentless and cruel disease, she said that “showing the real struggle of two nurses sharing an illness together yet being alone in their own torture of what their futures hold is Holby at its best”.

She described it as “tough” to watch but believed it would resonate well with cancer sufferers as they go on a journey together, where they would learn “their worst fears” and reflect upon “lost opportunities”.

Holby’s executive producer Simon Harper, also said that his team originally didn’t think they could have two cancer stories running at the same time, but they later realised they should because statistically, the illness affects many people during their lifetime.

He described the story as “two most caring nurses now have to care for each other”.

Holby City airs Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC One.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 3: Let’s Unpack Those Riverdale Mentions https://briefnews.eu/chilling-adventures-of-sabrina-part-3-lets-unpack-those-riverdale-mentions/ https://briefnews.eu/chilling-adventures-of-sabrina-part-3-lets-unpack-those-riverdale-mentions/#respond Sat, 25 Jan 2020 16:54:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chilling-adventures-of-sabrina-part-3-lets-unpack-those-riverdale-mentions/

It’s not the full-blown crossover some fans have been waiting for, but Riverdale does receive a pair of shout-outs (and then some) in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s just-released Part 3.

(This is probably where we should warn you that you’re about to encounter a few minor spoilers from Part 3. Super minor. Still, consider yourself warned.)

The eight new episodes, which dropped Friday, send Sabrina and her friends on an epic quest for a collection of supernatural relics, one of which they discover is hidden in — wait for it — Riverdale. With Ambrose by her side, Sabrina pops over to Betty and Veronica’s hood in Episode 3, though you’ll be disappointed to know that neither character makes her acquaintance. In fact, we don’t even see the actual town, as the Spellmans’ search is confined to the woods.

Greendale’s neighboring town is referenced again in Episode 6 during a conversation between Hilda and Dr. C. When he asks if there’s anything he can get for her, she says, “There’s this diner in Riverdale. It sells the juiciest hamburgers and the thickest milkshakes.” Though she doesn’t mention it by name, she’s clearly referring to Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe, the popular establishment frequented by the likes of Archie Andrews and Jughead Jones. And while we don’t actually get to see Dr. C step foot in the iconic diner, at least we know that Hilda must have been there several times; there’s no telling with which Riverdale favorites she has unknowingly crossed paths.

And this doesn’t technically count as a Riverdale connection, but fans of the CW series were likely glad to see actress Nathalie Boltt (aka Penelope Blossom) show up in the premiere of Part 3. (Click here for our full recap of Episode 1.)

Riverdale has been referenced several times throughout Sabrina’s first two parts, with the biggest connection being the appearance of Riverdale‘s Ben Button (played by Moses Thiessen) as a pizza delivery boy.

RELATED STORIES

Fair warning, witches: We’re about to spoil Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s Part 3 premiere. Abandon complaints, all ye who enter here!

Exactly one month has passed since Sabrina Spellman trapped her father inside her boyfriend and sent them both to hell, and not a day has gone by that she hasn’t attempted (and failed) to rescue poor, hot Nicholas from the underworld. Fortunately, she’s aided by the world’s most understanding ex-boyfriend, who tells Sabrina that he’ll guard the mine “as many times as you want” while she attempts to open the fiery gates. Few, if any, high school-aged boys are capable of such blind loyalty, but it’s long been established that Harvey Kinkle is a prince among exes. We stan.

After accepting that some gates weren’t meant to be opened, Sabrina turns to Dorian for assistance, using one of his paintings as a back-door portal to Madam Satan’s dominion. (She promises to bring back an unholy flower capable of healing his pimple. Because why not.) Naturally, Sabrina’s three human pals — who have since formed a bitchin’ garage band called The Fright Club — follow her to hell, which looks a little different than she envisions in her nightmares. In fact, the real hell turns out to be more like The Wizard of Oz, complete with a cursed brick road, a tortured scarecrow (Theo’s uncle!) and an evil tin man (Harvey’s brother!).

Following a close encounter with a few more familiar faces, Sabrina’s squad is summoned to meet with Lilith, who still looks a lot like Ms. Wardwell. (As she rightfully explains, “a face like this is hard to beat.”) The self-crowned queen of hell offers to return Nick to the land of the living in exchange for Sabrina’s public support of Lilith’s claim to the throne. It seems like a perfectly fair trade, as far as deals with the devil go, but it isn’t long until the plan hits a pretty serious snag.

You see, hell’s royal court isn’t exactly keen on “Lucifer’s concubine” (and that’s among the nicer things they label her) calling the shots, nor do they fancy the idea of an earth-dwelling child like Sabrina sitting on the throne — regardless of it being her birthright. Instead, the kings of the netherworld propose a more pec-tacular option in the form of Caliban, a golden-haired prince who was forged from hell’s scorched terrain.

Sensing this discord from within Nick’s shirtless frame, Lucifer takes a break from their eternal shirtless wrestling match to give his disobedient daughter a shirtless pep talk. Sure, he intends to torture the ever-loving crap out of her for everything she’s done, but first, it’s her duty as a Morningstar to assume the throne and maintain the cosmic balance.

Her friends, as always, remain dopily optimistic about Sabrina’s abilities to juggle life as a “cheerleader by day, queen of hell by night,” all the while blissfully unaware that a sinister group of pagans has just entered Greendale — and hell will soon become the least of their concerns.

Elsewhere in the premiere…

* After a month of housing the students from the Academy of the Unseen Arts at the Spellman Mortuary, Zelda reaches her breaking point. (Not only is there no hot water for her bath — again! — but she’s tired of having to dress everyone in clothes made out of curtains, Enchanted-style.) She decides to reopen the academy, appointing herself its new directrix and glamouring Hilda to look like Father Blackwood. (They can’t have that pesky Witches Council suspecting that something is up!) And with the Dark Lord out of commission, Zelda’s shrinking coven turns to a new power source. All hail Madam Satan!

* Speaking of Blackwood, Prudence and Ambrose’s hunt for the problematic priest brings them to New Orleans, where Prudence traps him by masquerading as Penelope Blossom a classy lady named Ms. DuBois. Unfortunately, “Blackwood” reveals himself to be a mere henchmen, disguised to look like his leader — an extremely common occurrence in this episode, apparently. Traditional magic clearly won’t cut it, so the duo turns to voodoo for assistance, eventually tracking Blackwood to Scotland. More specifically, Loch Ness. (Yes, that Loch Ness.)

* And poor Ms. Wardwell returns to Baxter High with no freaking clue what happened in the three months she spent under Madam Satan’s influence. This time around, though, she’s just a teacher, as opposed to the school’s fearsome principal. (I guess neither of Michelle Gomez’s characters are fit to rule.)

The Walking Dead season 10 spoilers: Negan’s next victim revealed in chilling clue? https://briefnews.eu/the-walking-dead-season-10-spoilers-negans-next-victim-revealed-in-chilling-clue/ https://briefnews.eu/the-walking-dead-season-10-spoilers-negans-next-victim-revealed-in-chilling-clue/#respond Mon, 19 Aug 2019 02:25:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-walking-dead-season-10-spoilers-negans-next-victim-revealed-in-chilling-clue/

The Walking Dead‘s Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) wasted no time in launching an attack on the Survivors, killing off several beloved characters the fandom longs to see a return of to this day.

Fans will remember the Season eight episode of the AMC series that saw Negan come head to head with the survivors, but Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) decided to let the cold blooded leader live behind bars.

However, it seems the next outing will see the baseball bat wielding villain walk free to take his next victim.

Showrunners recently revealed they will be bringing the comic book character of Brandon Rose to screens next season in an image release showing the pair together.

Fans of the comic books will remember Brandon was introduced in issue 131 along with Maggie Rhee’s love interest Dante.

However, the newcomer met his ending in issue 153 at the hands of Negan after Brandon busts him out of jail.

The comic books saw Brandon enraged at Rick after failing to retaliate after his mother was killed by the Whisperers.

Wanting Rick to pay for the death, he busts out Negan in hope it will lead to his demise.

However, after Brandon played his part, Negan was quick to dispose of him in the comics, stabbing him in the heart.

With Rick being pictured out of jail in the next outing, surely this confirms Brandon busted him out and could meet the same fate?

READ MORE: The Walking Dead season 10: Bosses reveal what caused the infection?

The spoiler comes after a deleted scene from series nine revealed why Rick kept Negan alive.

In the scene with Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), which appears on the Blu-ray DVD release, Rick explains he had to honour those killed in the apocalypse.

As they walked through he woods, he told her: “Every day since I put Negan in that cell, I have this moment, usually right when I wake up, this feeling that I should go down there and kill him, [and] to keep going and finish them all [the Saviors].

“In that moment, it’s all I want.”

He went on to add: “But then I remember everyone we’ve lost, not just to the Saviors, but the whole way.

“And I know I need to honour them, to build life. Not take it.

“Because it’s us or the dead and every life counts now.”

However, the next outing could see Rick regret sparing Negan if the show follows suit of the comics and sees the villain escape.
