Eleven official-looking internal training videos leaked on YouTube and showed how repairs are made on iPhone X, iMac Pro and MacBook Pro.

  • An Arctic air mass enveloping parts of the Northeast US on Friday sent temperatures below zero in some areas.
  • The frigid weather is the byproduct of a bomb cyclone and polar vortex that slammed the East Coast for much of the week.
  • The storm left some vehicles encased in ice on roads in Boston, blanketed New York landmarks in snow, and prompted airport closures and flight delays for a time.

The aftermath of a frigid “bomb cyclone” and polar vortex left much of the northeastern US frigid on Friday night.

Wind chills in one part of New Hampshire were forecast to hit negative 100 degrees, according to forecasters. New York Times reporters who were sent to Mount Washington in that state said the wind “steals your breath and freezes your eyelashes.”

“You can’t blink. The cold stabs your face and numbs your earlobes to rubber,” they wrote in a revealing story published Friday.

Meteorologist Mike Carmon, who is stationed at the Mount Washington Observatory, told the The Times that the top of the mountain would likely be the coldest spot in the continental US on Friday night. Carmon called the top of Mount Washington, which sits nearly 6,300 feet above sea level, “one of the most extreme places on Earth.”

Meteorologists on Carmon’s team have to go outside to check their weather instruments and record various metrics like wind speed and temperature every hour. The trek takes some preparation, The Times reported. The forecasters dress in five layers of clothing, and put on ski masks and goggles.

But it’s not enough. As the Times’ Jess Bidgood, Katherine Q. Seelye, and Jack Healy describe it:

“Even within a few minutes of standing outside at 3,900 feet — two-thirds of the way up — toes and fingers, including those wrapped in multiple layers of clothing, can quickly go numb. The wind turns snowflakes into projectiles that feel as if they are piercing any skin that is exposed.”

The northeast storm had already caused blizzards and flooding throughout the region this week, but the lingering effects gripped the East Coast on Friday. Cars in downtown Boston were frozen in ice, and New York City landmarks were blanketed in snow.

It’s literally frozen hell. But WAIT. Because this is the world we live in, it’s going to get even colder. Much colder and is slated to smack the east coast this week, causing millions of people to question why they are not living in California.

So we asked weather experts to break this down for us. Here you go:

The winter storm is being described as a “bomb cyclone.” Yes, this is a real scientific term that’s been around for decades and refers to a storm’s rapid intensification, meteorologist Ryan Maue told BuzzFeed News. If a storm’s central pressure drops 24 millibars or more in a day, it’s known as a bomb or “bombing out.”

The winter storm has other names, too: nor’easter or this other comforting one: a mid-latitude cyclone.

Surprisingly, winter cyclones aren’t exactly unprecedented, according to Jonathan Martin, a meteorology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. About 10 storms like this occur across the northern hemisphere every year, he added.

It’s possible this storm will set records for cold temperatures and snowfall in some areas, especially in the southeastern US. But these storms are unpredictable, said Martin, and “the jury is not in yet on where the storm is going to go.”

Not long after Disney barred the Los Angeles Times from advance screenings because it wasn’t happy with an investigative series published about it in the paper, the company announced that it plans to expand its empire with the purchase of 21st Century Fox. Although the entertainment powerhouse eventually lifted the ban on the Times after the backlash from journalists, publications, and film critics, heading into the new year, many are worried that their already fragile relationship with the company will lead to even less access.

“They’ll have more control over more things, so if they decide they don’t like what you wrote and want to ban you from their screenings, eventually that will mean all of entertainment,” one film reporter told BuzzFeed News. “For journalists and reporters trying to do their job, it is frightening to see the scope of one company expand in that way and know that your fate is kind of tied up with them.”

BuzzFeed News spoke to a dozen entertainment reporters, film critics, and journalists who cover film and television about how Fox’s sale to Disney would impact their jobs. The majority of them wanted to remain anonymous because of concerns about ramifications from Disney. (When reached by BuzzFeed News, a spokesperson for Disney had no comment.)

“Just the fact that I feel more comfortable talking to you anonymously indicates how much extreme power Disney has,” one reporter said.

Disney’s purchase, which will cost a total of $ 52.4 billion in stock, has added to its status as a titan in the film and TV industry. But the news prompted a lot of discussion, especially from reporters and critics, about how Disney’s acquisition of the 20th Century Fox film and TV studios — as well as a number of cable properties like FX, not to mention a significant share in Hulu — would have a considerable effect on the entertainment industry in a number of ways.

Jason Bailey, the editor of Flavorwire, told BuzzFeed News that he thought the way Disney treated the LA Times was “absolutely chilling” and he fears this will only grow more common once Disney takes over 21st Century Fox.

“The idea of a major, multinational conglomerate being that petty and vindictive and really engaging in an act of retribution against an outlet, and against reporters who had nothing to do with the thing that they were angry about, gave some insight into the length they were willing to go against anyone who didn’t toe the Disney company line,” Bailey said.

“It’s very worrisome, and is more worrisome if they’re in control of this much more of the entertainment industry.”

The probable merger means Disney would gain control over even more properties, and journalists would have to go through their team for even more access and coverage. “If you’re in good with their publicists, then you can get access to everything,” one entertainment reporter said. “If you know you’re going to write something that’s going to make them mad, you have to consider what the larger ramifications are going to be.”

Some reporters noted that this is not a problem specific to Disney, but that in the world of entertainment journalism, your relationships with press representatives determine your access to interviews, film screenings, set visits, and other means of coverage. Future press opportunities, they said, are dependent on how favorable your coverage has been of past films, television shows, and other news related to the company.

“As a critic, I’ve had Disney tell me they don’t want to invite me to a film because I didn’t like the last one,” another film critic said. “It really scares me to watch them get even more power.”

A freelance critic and member of the New York Film Critics Circle told BuzzFeed News they were troubled by the idea of the Disney–Fox deal, and specifically brought up concern regarding Disney’s control of properties.

“There are currently six major studios, and then there are all the smaller ones, and the one that I like dealing with the least is Disney,” the critic said. “I would compare them to the Vatican in that way. They have their rules, they do things their way, and if you don’t like it then take a hike, because they have the product in which there is the most market interest.”

One film writer pointed out that movie screenings and interview access to actors who are involved with the studio “aren’t exactly First Amendment rights,” but also said the way Disney barred the LA Times “definitely continues to give me pause.”

“I personally worry that a studio this big will need the press less and less. I don’t think anything drastic will change immediately, but I think it is more important than ever for entertainment reporters to uphold journalistic values,” the writer said. “We are not their PR arms, no matter how much they’d like us to be.”

There were a couple of reporters who believed that the Disney and Fox merger wouldn’t necessarily make matters any better or worse for people who cover the entertainment industry.

“I don’t have any fears now that Disney is going to be a bigger company [that] there’s more at risk or I’m going to get less access,” one reporter said. “If you’re in with Disney, you’re in with Disney, and if you’re out, you’re out.”

Eric Kohn, deputy editor and chief film critic for Indiewire, said he’s not necessarily afraid of the Disney and Fox consolidation, but that he is concerned on some level because of the recent LA Times barring.

“We’ve already had this reality check when it comes to situations in the White House and that level of power,” he said. “What this makes clear is it’s also happening on the level of corporations, where there is an agenda that is seen as being even greater than whatever kind of ethical standards we apply to journalism.”

Kohn also said that he hopes the LA Times situation serves as a reminder to people that we shouldn’t take freedom of speech for granted, and that entertainment reporters and consumers learned from that experience, as well as Disney.

“It’s less about what is Disney going to do and more about what do we want them to do, and are we going to get what we want when we push back,” Kohn said.

While there are some people in entertainment journalism who have not voiced major concerns, the majority of reporters and critics who spoke to BuzzFeed News expressed at least some worry about what Disney would do with even more power than it already has.

“We’ve seen a pattern in Disney’s behavior,” an entertainment reporter said. “The more power they have, the more they wield it.”

“That amount of power feels like it’s being put in the hands of people who don’t know what to do with it or how to appropriately respond to stories they don’t like,” another entertainment writer said. “Because those stories are going to keep on coming.”

North America is currently experiencing a particularly severe and protracted cold snap resulting in major car accidents, a state of emergency, sharks freezing to death and even now Niagara Falls is experiencing the Arctic blast.

The waters of the majestic falls themselves has yet to succumb to the polar winds, but the surrounding area has been transformed into a winter wonderland as temperatures plummet across Canada and the US, dropping to -34 degrees Fahrenheit in parts and dropping further to -89 degrees (-67 Celsius) when windchill is factored in.

The weather has wreaked havoc on US roads, with Michigan alone reporting up to 30 crashes due to the recent icy conditions, including a major pile-up involving at least 40 vehicles reports WGN.  

An 83-year old woman died of exposure in South Dakota after her car broke down and she went to search for help. Three people also died in Lake Eerie after their car slid off an icy road into a canal reports the LA Times.

Polar winds from the Arctic are being blamed for the precipitous drop in temperatures over the past week.

Residents from as far south as Tennessee and South Carolina all the way to Maine in the northeastern US have been warned to exercise extreme caution during the big freeze. Maine Governor Paul LePage declared a state of emergency to allow heating oil providers to work beyond federal limits to ensure residents stay warm.  

In North Dakota, typically among the coldest states in the US each year, temperatures are expected to plunge to -30 F (-34.4 C) Saturday with a wind chill of about -50 F (-45.5 C) according to meteorologist Ken Simosko, as cited by The Mirror.

Even marine life is falling victim to the extreme cold with sharks reportedly dying from shock due to the drop in temperature.

This Star Wars-related op-ed does not contain any spoilers for The Last Jedi, other than a mention or two about porgs. It does, however, have some spoilers for the rest of the mainline series and possibly Rogue One.

A few years ago, when Disney acquired the rights to Star Wars, one of the first things the House of Mouse did was to throw the almost-wholly-execrable Expanded Universe into the garbage chute. With the stroke of a pen, tens of thousands of pages of what was effectively fan fiction (and written like it) became dianoga chow—and good riddance. The tiny portions of the EU worth saving—mostly culled from the work of Timothy Zahn, maybe with a bit of Stackpole tossed in for flavor—were given new life in the redefined canon, but jettisoning the rest of it was a necessary step. It removed a giant calcified tumor from the Star Wars universe’s colon, and doing so gave Disney the latitude it needed in order to tell its own stories without having to fact check everything on Wookiepedia first.

But for older folks who grew up with Star Wars—particularly us GenX-ers and proto-Millennials born in the late ’70s and early ’80s who experienced the movies for the first time as very young kids—it signaled something more ominous. When Obi-Wan decided to train Anakin, it was with the expectation that he would bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness (though maybe Obi-Wan should have thought through all the possible implications of what “balance” could mean in that context). Similarly, when Disney bought the franchise, the dumping of the EU was the first sign that Disney might not be out to “save” Star Wars—at least, not how we’d prefer it to be saved. In fact, by jettisoning the EU, Disney looked like it might have been about to ruin Star Wars for us. And how dare they? Star Wars was ours!
