The pontiff has expelled two Chilean bishops from the priesthood after they were accused of sexual abuse involving minors, the Vatican confirmed. The case concerns Francisco Jose Cox Huneeus, archbishop emeritus from the city of La Serena, and Marco Antonio Ordenes Fernandez, bishop emeritus from Iquique. Defrocking, the harshest punishment the Pope can inflict on the clergy, rarely happens against such high-ranking church officials. The Vatican said that the decision was definitive and is not open to appeal.

Composed of ingredients so thinly sliced they rival its skinny country of origin, the chacarero is surprisingly dense when fully stuffed. Perhaps the good half a cow’s worth of fried churrasco-style steak has something to do with it. Atop the meat mountain go thick-cut hunks of tomato (the chunkiest addition to the chacarero), followed by a vegetable that doesn’t typically scream “sandwich” — a fistful of vibrant green bean slivers that add a freshness and snap to what could otherwise be a heavy mess. Optional wafer-thin slices of green ají (chili pepper) subtly boost the flavor, and the whole thing is then (somewhat) contained by what Valparaíso native and gastro-blogger Andre Arriaza describes via email as the Chilean burger bun, aka pan amasado.
When you do finally get your gob around a truly sky-high, classic version of the chacarero, it’s a delicious mad mess waiting to happen.
The chacarero ascended into a whole new sphere of popularity outside its native Chile in 2014 when Time magazine ranked it as one of the world’s top 13 sandwiches. Before this seminal moment in sandwich history, Arriaza says he “barely found a foreigner who would know about it,” designating it instead as “an old-time favorite for locals.” But now you can find one at most Chilean diners and often in fancier restaurants, typically for around $ 8.

But when you do finally get your gob around a truly sky-high, classic version of the chacarero, it’s a delicious mad mess waiting to happen. (Although, in my iteration from La Fuente Alemana, the mayonnaise that was, quite frankly, poured atop the sandwich certainly helped bind the fillings together.) Slopping on your shirt is far better than tucking in with a knife and fork, though, like some kind of sandwich-eating heathen, or retreating to eat alone. After all, “Chileans love eating sandwiches,” Arriaza explains, and they serve as the social lubricant that inspires conversation between friends.
Even if you’re going solo in Chile, there’s typically a communal feel to the eating experience anyway. At La Fuente Alemana, diners sit at a bar hemming in the preparation area, watching eagerly as sandwich makers and servers in starchy white uniforms quickly knock together their order. But no retro sandwich shop can stop this quintessential, capital-city meal from feeling removed from its supposedly — “the origins of the sandwich are unknown,” Arriaza admits — rural roots.

The name chacarero itself, which likely derives from a Quechua word chacra (rural farm), has since slotted itself neatly into the regional Spanish of Chile. Chacarero, in turn, means “owner of the farm,” and as Arriaza explains, the bread and meat of the chacarero sandwich are therefore popularly (and, of course, symbolically, he hastens to add) interpreted as “the owner who uses produce from his or her farm.”
Regardless of the truth of the chacarero’s farm-to-fame backstory, devouring one (or three, in practically as many days, as I did) belongs at the top of any must-eat list when visiting Chile. Where else are you going to find a green beans–and–bread combo that works as well as this one?

With people, it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for. With drinks, it’s the sickly sweet concoctions that will give you the raging hangover. And in Chile, it’s the terremoto cocktail that will leave you unsteady. It may look like liquid cotton candy and have an innocent-appearing scoop of pineapple ice cream bobbing on its surface, but this sugary, bright pink drink served in a 1-liter plastic cup has triple threat written all over it.
There are only three ingredients in the potent terremoto: pipeño, a hastily fermented, very sweet Chilean white wine, and that all-important pineapple ice cream — which, unlike ice cubes, keeps the drink icy cool without watering it down — over which you pour a healthy glug of grenadine (you can swap that out for fernet or even pisco if you don’t have the sweet tooth of a kid in a candy store). All combine to give the terremoto its utter drinkability (and help make it so aesthetically pleasing), but they also possess the potential to have you necking what is essentially a pint of white wine in record time. Which brings us to that peculiar name — terremoto, aka “earthquake.”
I missed an international flight the day after sipping just two.
As local legend has it, some unsuspecting foreign journalists reporting on Chile’s real-life 1985 earthquake asked their bartender for a refreshing drink to take the edge off the heat. The jelly-leg-inducing drink they received in return birthed the terremoto moniker. However, Chilean-American blogger Andrea Mujica claims that the drink simply “started to make news” around this time, adding that the all-too-easily-imbibed beverage is called terremoto because it “has the same effect [as] when you’re trying to walk” during an actual earthquake.
Whatever the truth, three also seems to be the magic number when it comes to the cocktail’s horror stories. Mujica was swept off her feet “three terremotos in” and couldn’t stand up. Chile-based American expat Sena Moran “pretty much had to be carried home” after her third. As for me, I missed an international flight the day after sipping just two. Perhaps that explains why most bars recommend you tap out after one, although if you feel you haven’t quite got your fix you can chance your luck with a réplica, or “aftershock,” the smaller, less potent baby brother to the full-size terremoto.
And yet, horror stories that’ll make for funny anecdotes in the future aside, there’s something so quintessentially Chilean about knocking back (or sipping carefully) a deceptively delicious terremoto or two while in Chile. While most commonly associated with and consumed around the fiestas patrias (literally, fatherland festivities) of Chilean Independence Day, you can get them year-round in Santiago’s most infamous dive bar — it’s “absolute mayhem,” says Moran — and the supposed birthplace of Chile’s most dangerously drinkable drink, La Piojera.
Wherever you decide to try a triple-threat terremoto, remember that although you might not want to stop at one, you probably should.
Chilean Independence Day is Sept. 18, 2018. Salud!

Judge Mario Carroza’s report, released Sunday, followed a probe into 579 adoptions between 1950 and 2001, 488 of those during the 1973-1990 dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. Of those, 525 were adopted by foreign families, and 432 went to the US. Calling the practice “kidnapping” and a “crime against humanity,” Carroza pointed out that Chile had no legal mechanism for overseas adoption until 1988.
Files on the 579 children of “vulnerable” mothers were discovered at the home of 96-year-old social worker Telma Uribe, who played a key role in the “irregular” adoptions according to Carroza. Mothers in financial hardship were paid to transfer their newborns to the legal guardianship of agencies. They were then “handed over” to families abroad.
The American Adoption Agency is linked to 206 of the cases; the Evangelical Adoption and Family Service to 22; the New York Study Service to 11; International Adoptions, Inc. to four; Catholic Charities of Richmond to three; Today’s Family, Inc. to three; and Homestudies, Inc. to two.
Carroza, a Santiago Appellate Court judge, told the Chilean newspaper La Tercera his team were probing “abduction of minors” in relation to political violence and human rights violations during the Pinochet era. “But the investigation goes further, because there are various traces of irregularities that perhaps it would be best to clear up.”
Even if “we are talking about cases that are not considered crimes against humanity, we would be talking about acts that would be proscribed,” the judge said.
Uribe conspired with two doctors, a lawyer, a translator, two other social workers and organizations including children’s homes and maternity wards, the report said. She even advertised her services on radio to mothers thinking of putting their children up for adoption.
Most of the mothers were going through economic difficulties, the report said, and were paid in one way or another to give up their children.
“In the great majority of cases reviewed there is effectively an economic contribution for diverse reasons,” the report notes.
Pinochet took power in the September, 1973 CIA-backed coup against socialist leader Salvador Allende, who committed suicide as troops stormed the presidential palace.

Pope Francis admitted Saturday that he can sometimes struggle with modern technology while joking that both he and his predecessor are on the “waiting list” for sainthood.
“I don’t know how to use online networks and that kind of thing, not even mobile phones, I don’t have one,” the 81-year-old pontiff told his audience in Rome. “I don’t know how to use the internet. When I have to send an email I write it by hand and a secretary sends it for me,” he added.
Pope Francis also announced that Pope Paul VI, who died in 1978, and is widely credited as a reformer within the Catholic faith, will be canonized as a saint later in 2018. More than 80 popes are recognized as saints by the Catholic Church while many more have been beatified, or declared to be among the blessed and entitled to specific religious honor and veneration.
He also joked that both he and his predecessor could one day also be canonized. “And Benedict and I are on the waiting list,” Pope Francis said, jokingly. “Pray for us!” However, such a joke may once again shine a spotlight on the past and present pontiffs’ failures amid yet another series of child sex abuse scandals within the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI resigned in February 2013 following a slew of financial scandals.
Meanwhile, in New York, the key witness in the sex abuse case leveled against a Chilean bishop gave “eye opening” testimony to a papally-mandated investigator. Juan Carlos Cruz spoke with Archbishop Charles Scicluna, one of the most experienced Vatican investigators of sexual abuse, for approximately four hours Saturday.
“I feel that I was heard… it was very intense and very detailed and very, sometimes, eye-opening for them,” Cruz said, as cited by Reuters. “He was hearing my testimony, and I was telling him about the abuse, about the cover up [and] the way survivors, not just me, are treated… the personal toll it takes on someone. He was crying… it wasn’t an act… I felt that he was concerned and that he was listening,” Cruz said. “Hopefully it will lead to good things.”
Pope Francis previously accused the alleged of victims of sexual abuse in Chile of slander, describing their allegations against Bishop Juan Barros as “calumny” with “not a shred of evidence against him.” He later apologized for his comments saying, “covering up abuse is an abuse in itself.” The man that the Argentinian pontiff put in charge of financial reform, Cardinal George Pell, was recalled to Australia to face sex offense charges in 2017.
Only those able to acknowledge their mistakes and ask pardon receive understanding and forgiveness from others.

The Pope’s widely publicized and often-lauded efforts at reform within the Church have alienated more conservative Catholics in the Vatican while his remarks regarding the multiple child sex scandals besetting the Catholic Church have disenfranchised his secular, liberal supporters.
Pope Francis has also received an unprecedented challenge to his papacy after four cardinals issued a dubia or letter of theological doubt, after the perceived softening of the Catholic Church’s stance on the topics of homosexuality, divorce and remarriage in 2014 and 2015.
The pontiff has also weighed in on political affairs such as the refugee crisis in Europe, climate change, and US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. However, there was much dismay when he failed to condemn the actions of the Burmese military and the Myanmar government’s handling of the Rohingya crisis and alleged genocide during a recent tour.
We cannot remain silent before the suffering of millions of people whose dignity has been wounded.

Two local women and a male tourist have died after a mudslide hit the small southern Chilean town of Villa Santa Lucia, located near the Corcovado National Park, renowned for its volcanoes, on Saturday. Three people were injured in the incident and airlifted to a hospital. The death toll, however, may rise, as 15 people remain unaccounted for as rescue efforts continue. Some 20 homes, a school and a polling station were affected by the landslide, forcing the authorities to cancel Sunday’s upcoming presidential vote at the polling station. Authorities have set up a shelter for those left homeless in a town with some 300 inhabitants. Power outages and fires have also been reported. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased.
At least one person is dead and about 337,000 households were left without power as rare snowfall hit the Chilean capital, Santiago. The unusual weather saw temperatures dropping below zero, said to be the lowest in almost a decade.
The one fatality was a worker who was clearing ice, the capital’s authorities said in a statement at a press conference, as cited by local media.
Two other people were injured after being electrocuted by a fallen power line, the statement added.
About 337,000 households were left without power due to the storm, the Office of National Emergency (ONEMI) said on Saturday, as cited by AFP. Officials said that the weather affected one in seven residents of the capital.
The snowstorm was the heaviest since 2007, AFP said, citing meteorologists.
Fallen trees and branches were the main causes of the power outages.
Several football matches were suspended due to heavy snow, the Football Federation of Chile said in a statement.
Some residents of Santiago and the greater area, which is home to around seven million people, opted to enjoy the rare event.
“We should admire the moment that nature gave us, this show so cute,” José Valenzuela, who took his children for a snowy walk in the capital, told AFP.

As one of two Chilean policemen sent to look after the South American fans, Alejandro Montero Zuniga sometimes feels like he is responsible for the image of the whole nation, but so far has nothing but pride, ahead of their team’s Confederations Cup semi-finals.
“No incidents have occurred so far, the Chilean fans are being well-behaved, and there have been no problems at stadiums. So, we are just left to hope that the Chilean supporters carry on in the same manner,” says Montero Zuniga, whose team faces off against Portugal in Kazan on Wednesday.
Zuniga says this in perfect Russian – and this is not surprising. Born in Stavropol, he lived in Russia until he was 17, before moving back to his father’s homeland in 1996.
In Chile’s police force he is often assigned jobs that require liaising with Russians – such as helping a Russian Il-76 crew fight forest fires in the country earlier this year.
But the chance to watch La Roja play in beautiful stadiums around the country has made this job particularly fun.
“I think thanks to the security service, the organization here is at the top level,” says Montero Zunigo, adding that Chile’s fans have not had problems with visas or dramatic encounters with locals.
But for all the childhood nostalgia, Montero Zuniga’s loyalties are not split.
“One thing I will note is that we, Chile, have one of the biggest supporter groups of all the teams here,” he boasts.
