The Family Chase welcomed the Lawrence-Harish family on to the ITV quiz show to try and win the big bucks.

However, the Dark Destroyer himself was standing in their way of the jackpot.

But there was one on hand to help put The Chaser, Shaun Wallace, off his game: Bradley Walsh.

The Chase host was on fine form this evening and set about cracking some hilarious jokes.

One star of the family was asked which author said that the “pen is mightier than the sword”.

Unfortunately, contestant Kerrie guessed wrong when she said Wilkie Collins.

Quizzers will be aware the phrase was coined by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839.

However, the quote peaked Bradley’s interest as he wondered how useful a pen would really be in a battle.

He began to sketch out how a soldier would write commands down to his team and it seemed Kerrie was loving the sketch.

But Shaun didn’t appear to be loving it quite as much and remained straight-faced throughout.

Bradley yelled at The Chaser to “cheer up” but his efforts didn’t seem to work.

The Lawrence-Harish family were certainly up against it tonight and struggled to get past Shaun, who was on fine form.

Mother Dawn was sadly knocked out of the competition first after she struggled to get her winnings home.

It was better news for Kerrie, who stormed through with her £500.

Demi bagged an impressive £2,000, but Giaa sadly was caught as she battled to get her £1,500 back to the team.

Earlier in the week, fellow Chaser Mark Labbett dropped a behind-the-scenes secret which left everyone stunned.

During a celebrity special, The Beast knocked out the plucky team but decided to share some advice with them.

He said: “I think what happened to you guys was you struggled to keep focused. That’s our one edge.

“It’s because you guys get stressed from the concentration, whereas we’re trained to do this all the time.”

The Chase airs weekdays on ITV at 5pm.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reported to have signed a two-year lease on a cottage in Great Tew, a picture-perfect village on Lord and Lady Bamford’s Great Tew Estate on the Oxfordshire border with Gloucestershire.

Lady Bamford created Daylesford Organic Farm – a farmshop, restaurant, café and garden shop with a spa attached – that has proved a huge draw for people wanting to relocate to the countryside, whether to bring up children or downsize.

“It is massive,” says Ben Way of estate agents Butler Sherborn’s Stow office.

“People fl y into the farmshop by helicopter. It’s ridiculous. It’s hideously expensive but very good.”

Like Harry and Meghan, David and Victoria Beckham also have a home in Great Tew and it’s where you’ll find Soho Farmhouse, a members’ club and hotel that attracts “creative types”.

Meghan had her hen party there.

“Many Londoners who move to the Cotswolds now want to be within easy reach of Daylesford,” says Ben.

“They can just get off the train at Kingham – it’s an easy journey from London.”

But while the A-listers pay a fortune at Daylesford or Soho Farmhouse, the Cotswolds are blessed with country pubs where the rest of us can indulge in seasonal food sourced locally and washed down by local beer, such as Donningtons brewed in Stow-on-the-Wold.

“Locally produced seasonal food is increasingly important to the area,” says Ben.

“There are a lot of markets, independent shops and delicatessens, that sort of thing. And all the pubs are local-orientated. Most are gastro pubs really.”

In fact, if you are looking to buy a house in the Cotswolds based on accessibility to a good pub, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

“They mostly have good views and lovely beer gardens but at this time of the year, now we’re coming into autumn, they’re also good for sitting around open fires,” says Ben.

There’s The Fox Inn at Lower Oddington near Stow-on-the-Wold, with a sheltered walled garden for summer and roaring fires in winter – plus a seasonal British menu.

It is close to Daylesford but also to Orchard House in Longborough, Gloucestershire, a Cotswold stone house that dates back to the 1700s and has an old stone bread oven, flagstone and wooden floors plus feature fireplaces, as well as three double bedrooms and two bathrooms.

It’s for sale at £895,000 (01451 830731; butlersherborn.co.uk). The King’s Head Inn at Bledington, Oxfordshire, was voted Pub Of The Year 2018 by The Good Pub Guide and also serves local food.

It’s not far from Stayts Farm in Church Westcote, Gloucestershire, a Grade II-listed 17th-century house with an Aga in the kitchen breakfast room, leaded light stone mullion windows, flagstone floors and open fi replaces.

Its first-floor master bedroom has a dressing area and shower room while there are three other bedrooms and an attic room.

For sale at £1.25million (01451 830731; butlersherborn.co.uk), it has large gardens, an orchard, stone outbuildings and parking.

Meanwhile 31 Manor Farm Cottages in Hawling, Gloucestershire, is close to The Black Horse Inn run by Donnington Brewery in Naunton, where Donnington beer-battered cod and chips with mushy peas is a speciality.

It has wood burning stoves, an open plan kitchen and four bedrooms – two with ensuite showers – plus a family bathroom, for sale at £795,000 (01451 830731; butlersherborn.co.uk).

As Butler Sherborn’s founding partner Sam Butler says of the Cotswolds: “You don’t have to go far to find exceptional food, a roaring log fi re and a warm welcome. And if you’re new to the area, there’s the opportunity to meet new people and quickly feel part of the community.”

A man dressed to impersonate North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un walked through Pyongyang’s cheer squad at the Olympics — and they looked unimpressed to say the least.

Though it’s unclear if this is the same impersonator who crashed the games’ opening ceremony, the man was rushed away from the squad, much as the earlier impersonators were shoed away on Friday.

North Korea’s official cheer squad is making its presence felt at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

They watched Switzerland’s ice hockey team demolish a unified all-Korea team 8-0, but that didn’t get in the way of their fierce, highly choreographed singing and waving.

These are not like cheerleaders in any other kind of sport. Their songs and chants are bizarre, compared to anything else you’ll hear from a crowd at a sports event. And they’ll go to prison if they put a foot wrong.

It has to be seen and heard to be believed. Scroll on! ↓

North Korea is sending its popular cheer squad to the Olympics, suggesting the country has been secretly preparing for months https://briefnews.eu/north-korea-is-sending-its-popular-cheer-squad-to-the-olympics-suggesting-the-country-has-been-secretly-preparing-for-months/ https://briefnews.eu/north-korea-is-sending-its-popular-cheer-squad-to-the-olympics-suggesting-the-country-has-been-secretly-preparing-for-months/#respond Wed, 10 Jan 2018 07:05:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/north-korea-is-sending-its-popular-cheer-squad-to-the-olympics-suggesting-the-country-has-been-secretly-preparing-for-months/ North Korea cheerCHOI WON-SUK/AFP/Getty Images

  • North Korea will be sending a delegation to the South Korean Winter Olympics, including its popular, all-female cheer squad.
  • A North Korean expert told Business Insider it would take months to prepare to send such a large group to South Korea.
  • This indicates the North may have been waiting until its missile testing was completed, so it could negotiate in a position of strength.

In historic talks with South Korea on Tuesday, North Korea agreed to not only send a delegation of athletes to the Winter Olympics but also its popular, all-female cheer squad.

The squad, which can include hundreds of members, has frequently attended international sporting events in the past.

And, according to Andray Abrahamian, a North Korean expert at the Griffith Asia Institute and a Research Fellow at Pacific Forum CSIS, these trips require months of preparation.

“It’s about preparing a group of young people to go into what North Korea sees as ideologically hostile territory and be on show for the world’s media and for the South Korean public,” Abrahamian told Business Insider. “They want to make sure they’re resistant to ideas and images that may impact how they see their own country or other countries. The more people you take, the more difficult it is.”

When it comes to the Winter Olympics, Abrahamian believes North Korea must have already conducted these preparations to be able to send such a large group of citizens to the games next month.

This would mean North Korea was planning its Olympic attendance long before Kim Jong Un said he was “open to dialogue” about the event in his 2018 New Year’s Day address.

“I think they wanted to get their last big missile test done, so they could claim “completion” of their testing cycle and then begin a charm offensive,” Abrahamian said.

“Leaving it late, and correctly guessing that Seoul would be receptive to North Korean participation, also leaves less time for opposition to the plan to develop. Regardless, this participation isn’t a recent idea. I’m sure Pyongyang has been sitting on it for months.”

The cheer squad, with its several hundred members, will help magnify the size of North Korea’s Olympic contingent to observers. The only competitive athletes the country is currently sending are two figure skaters.

North Korea’s cheer squad is made up of young women, usually around 20 years old, who are university students, at music school, or part of a propaganda squad.

There is clear criteria for squad members, Kim Gyeong-sung, the South Korean head of the Inter-Korean Athletic Exchange Association, told the BBC. These are “appearance” and having the right “ideology.”

Background checks are also carried out to ensure members don’t harbor pro-Japan or North Korean defectors in their families.

The squad, has only performed in South Korea three times, in 2002, 2003, and 2005.

In 2005, one of those cheerleaders in was Ri Sol-Ju, who is now the wife of Kim Jong Un.

The North Koreans won’t be the only cheer squad at Pyeongchang next month. The US is also sending a cheerleading contingent.

In 2000, more than 550,000 people died around the world of the measles virus. But the World Health Organisation announced in November that, thanks to a massive worldwide vaccination effort – more than 5.5 billion doses of measles vaccine given – that figure dropped to just 90,000 in 2016.

Measles is a nasty disease that can cause disability, brain damage, deafness, and death. It used to kill 1.3 million people around the world every year. Vaccination programmes, therefore, save 1.3 million lives every year. “Saving an average of 1.3 million lives per year through measles vaccine is an incredible achievement and makes a world free of measles seem possible, even probable, in our lifetime,” Dr Robert Linkins, of the Measles and Rubella Initiative, is quoted as saying on the WHO blog.

Roger Federer had far bigger cheer than Rafael Nadal at ATP Finals… this is why – Croft https://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-had-far-bigger-cheer-than-rafael-nadal-at-atp-finals-this-is-why-croft/ https://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-had-far-bigger-cheer-than-rafael-nadal-at-atp-finals-this-is-why-croft/#respond Tue, 14 Nov 2017 21:17:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roger-federer-had-far-bigger-cheer-than-rafael-nadal-at-atp-finals-this-is-why-croft/

That is the opinion of Sky Sports tennis pundit and former British No 1 Annabel Croft.

Croft and Greg Rusedski were speaking ahead of Federer’s second game of the ATP World Tour Finals in London against Alexander Zverev tonight.

The Swiss legend won his opening game against Jack Sock on Sunday, with World No 1 Nadal playing his only game on Monday, a defeat to David Goffin, before withdrawing with a knee injury.

Federer’s clash with Sock drew a 17,800 capacity crowd as he dispatched the Ameircan in straight sets, but there were large areas of unoccupied seating as Nadal took on Goffin.

Former US Open finalist Rusedski says Federer is the player the spectators wants to watch.

“This is what everybody wants to see,” the Brit said.

“It doesn’t matter if the Swiss fans have booked it out, everybody in the world, not only the Swiss, want to see this man.

“When he plays at Wimbledon, whether it’s (Andy) Murray, whether it’s Nadal, the crowd are usually always behind Roger.

“He’s a once in a century player that we get to see.”

Croft agreed with Rusedski’s claim and says it was clear Roger Federer had the loudest reception of the week so far.

“It’s hard to disagree with you there Greg, he really is,” Croft said.

“That was the biggest cheer we have had by a mile. The cameras and the phones that were going off around the arena just to catch a picture of him.

“He loves it doesn’t he, he is like a rock star who never wants to get off this stage.”

WATCH: Cruise storm wave reaches 70 FEET during dangerous weather as passengers cheer https://briefnews.eu/watch-cruise-storm-wave-reaches-70-feet-during-dangerous-weather-as-passengers-cheer/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-cruise-storm-wave-reaches-70-feet-during-dangerous-weather-as-passengers-cheer/#respond Thu, 28 Sep 2017 20:41:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-cruise-storm-wave-reaches-70-feet-during-dangerous-weather-as-passengers-cheer/

The viral video shows the scary moment that a cruise ship battles horrendous storms whilst in the Mediterranean sea.

Passengers are seen watching from behind a window as the liner battles the huge swells in the water.

As the boat rises up above one tremendous wave, the resounding fall sends a huge wave over the ship.

It makes for a nerve-wracking watch.

The Youtube video, which has had over 185,000 views, shows deck 11 of the Celebrity Summit cruise liner be hit by waves.

The 70 feet that it reaches causes a huge spray of mist to splatter against the window, much to the shock of the passengers.

Those filming can be seen laughing and cheering as it crashes against the window.

They certainly wouldn’t have wanted to have been on the outside part of the ship when it happened.

Youtube users definitely didn’t agree that it was a fun watch.

One wrote: “They’re not fireworks, I’d have a vest on, right near an exit-preferably within reach of a raft.”

However as she mentions it hit 20 feet high, other users took it upon themselves to correct her.

Another commented: “20 feet? That would be easily 40-50 feet.”

It’s not the first time that a cruise ship has been caught on camera battling dangerous storms.

A Disney Cruise liner suffered during bad weather which ended up seeping onto the decks.

Passengers are seen watching until they are hit by a nasty wave, causing them to flee inside.

Luckily no-one was hurt.
