Are belief, advocacy and perseverance enough to save sport from cheaters or should Olympians be looking for alternative methods to be heard? 

As athletes from around the world are set to overtake Calgary for the first-ever Global Athlete Forum beginning on Sunday, sport leaders will be unifying their voices, hoping to affect change. The forum, collectively hosted by the Canadian Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), is designed for participants to have input on how to better protect Olympic sport from the black cloud that continues to overshadow it: doping.

The fight against doping, and really any fight within the barriers of the Olympic sport system, always seems to be an uphill battle. Seemingly, even when athletes are given a seat at the table, the change they lobby for is too little, too late. 

At the heart of the movement is WADA athlete chair Beckie Scott. She originally earned a bronze medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics before being bumped up to gold two years later after two Russian athletes were disqualified for doping.

But Scott isn't the only Canadian to be robbed of an Olympic medal moment. It took shot putter Dylan Armstrong seven years to officially receive his bronze medal from the 2008 Beijing Games and Christine Girard is still patiently awaiting the arrival of her Olympic medals (a retro-active bronze from the Beijing 2008 Games and most recently, an upgrade to Olympic gold in London 2012).

"The power differences between professional sports like the NHL and MLB, and non-unionized sports like the NCAA or Olympic sport, is the amount of leverage," said Steven Fehr, who acts as special counsel to the National Hockey League Players' Association. 

"A union affords athletes legal rights, it entitles them to bargain. It's far more than just a seat at the table. The difference is without it, decisions aren't made with the same representation of the athlete's best interest."

Girard initially won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, but the two athletes who placed ahead of her, Maiya Maneza of Kazakhstan and Svetlana Tsarukaeva of Russia, were both disqualified after they tested positive for doping. 4:03

Is creating a union the leverage Olympic athletes need? 

"Athletes would need to establish a clear employee-employer relationship to obtain the right to collectively bargain.  I don't know if that employment relationship would be clear enough between any provincial, national or international governing body," said Bethan Dinning, a lawyer specializing in labour and employment matters with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in Toronto.

"Not to mention, it's also uncertain which governing body, if any, would be the proper respondent to efforts at collective action by Olympic athletes. Adding to that complexity is the fact there is a great deal of diversity amongst athletes, most notably by sport, but also their bargaining interests and priorities. It begs the questions — could one bargaining agent effectively represent those interests? And would a critical number of individual athletes really agree to give up their individual bargaining power?"

'Fighting for bigger roles'

Retired Olympic silver medallist and past WADA athlete commission member Andreanne Morin doesn't envision the topic will be addressed over the next few days.

"Instead of trying to force a system that doesn't fit the current governance structure of Olympic sport, we're looking at the current structure and fighting for bigger roles for each respective athlete commission within it."

But as evidenced by the long standing Russian doping scandal, change seems to be more of a marathon, not a sprint.

Morin hopes the forum will further unify the athlete voice and advance the momentum on finalizing a WADA Athlete Charter of Rights. The goal is to have the Athlete Charter ratified into the WADA Code (the Code essentially being the broad rules athletes, nations and sport bodies must adhere to) by 2021.  It will then serve as a formal document within the code and most importantly, it will be enforceable. 

"As a former athlete, I can sympathize with athletes that deal with cheating in their sport," said Morin.  "But we can't just lose faith and just give up. We need to keep fighting.  We need to continue unifying the athlete voice and mobilizing for change. Progress is being made, even if it's never fast enough."

Even if a legal right to bargain is likely to remain elusive for Olympians, cleaning up doping in sport remains a priority for athletes like Morin. And like so many other Olympians, adversity and disbelief are just common obstacles she's willing to overcome.

Olympic sport needs this forum to be successful. It needs athletes working together against those cheating the system, with as much perseverance and dedication as they did in pursuit of an Olympic medal.

They won't have a legal right to bargain and they still lack leverage, but when the voice for change becomes collectively unified and louder, it can be a powerful tool.

Combatting hacking and cheating in online games has taken a serious turn for PlayerUknown’s Battlegrounds developer Bluehole/PubgCorp. Over the weekend it was revealed that Chinese authorities arrested some 15 people for their roles in making and selling cheats for the online shooter, and the offending parties have been fined over $ 4.5 million (30m yuan). What’s more, this doesn’t sound like it’ll be an isolated incident: the BBC writes that more arrests are expected as the investigation goes on.

More than just giving shady players an unfair advantage, the software was apparently mining users’ computers for login information and personal data. Bluehole has a vested interest in keeping PUBG as level a playing field as possible: If players leave because the game is overrun with hackers, the single-game company will go out of business. Nipping this in the bud sends a clear message that nefarious deeds won’t be tolerated and will be punished to the furthest extent of the law. And you thought an IP ban was the end of the world…

  • LPGA pro Suzann Pettersen called out President Trump accusing him of cheating on the golf course.
  • The 15-time LPGA Tour winner described Trump’s penchant to ask for “gimmes” on the green, as well as his ball’s curious habit of always finding the fairway no matter how far into the woods it initially looked off the tee.
  • Pettersen still has a fondness for Trump based on the time they’ve spent together over the years on the golf course.

People have long been suspect of President Trump’s self-proclaimed prowess on the golf course, and a recent interview with LPGA pro Suzann Pettersen added more fuel to those suspicions.

While speaking with the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang, the 15-time LPGA Tour winner Pettersen went into detail of Trump’s tendency to fudge the numbers on the golf course, as well as describing his errant drives and their curious habit of always ending up on the fairway.

“He cheats like hell,” Pettersen said. “So I don’t quite know how he is in business. They say that if you cheat at golf, you cheat at business. I’m pretty sure he pays his caddie well, since no matter how far into the woods he hits the ball, it’s in the middle of the fairway when we get there.”

Pettersen also mentioned Trump’s reliance on “gimmes” in order to avoid missing a decisive putt.

“Yes, yes, that happens all the time. He always says he is the world’s best putter. But in all the times I’ve played him, he’s never come close to breaking 80,” Pettersen said. “But what’s strange is that every time I talk to him he says he just golfed a 69, or that he set a new course record or won a club championship some place.”

Still, Pettersen has a fondness for Trump, with their relationship being developed on the golf course for many years before the reality show star made a run at the presidency.

“I’ve got to know Trump so well that I don’t take everything he says literally. Yeah, you’ll never meet another person who loves himself as much as he does, but I have also met him on another level altogether, before he was president. I know how much he cares.”

It is finally bootcamp and now that the audition stages are over, the competition really heats up. 

The first task of the gruelling round sees contestants tackle the Wall of Songs and as the teaser for the upcoming episode shows, it gets chaotic. 

Dermot, 44, explains: “There are 35 songs on that wall, each song has four cards. 

“Pick one song. You have to find three other people who are singing the same song… Song choice is everything,” he insisted. 

After he blew a horn, the mass of hopefuls charged towards the wall, hoping to get a song of their dreams. 

However, one singer grabbed way more than she was supposed to and it was up to Dermot to tell her off about it. 

He demanded to know how she came to have five cards when he insisted each contestant only took one. 

“That is not the idea, you pick one!” the X Factor stalwart yelled. 

This follows last week’s dramatic instalment of the ITV talent show which saw Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger suffer not one but two car crashes. 

The mischievous pair tried to take a golf buggy into a shop but it was just too big and ended up smashing into the store’s metal detecters. 

The X Factor continues tonight on ITV at 8pm.

However, in a matter of seconds, kissing noises creep from beneath the bathroom door and Sarah hops into Chad’s bed for more tongue on tongue action. 

What’s more, Sarah spent her afternoon giving Chad a sensual neck massage while he enjoyed himself completely naked. 

Sarah has come under fire from Celebrity Big Brother viewers as it emerged she had a “secret” boyfriend watching on from outside the Borehamwood bungalow. 

Despite the 35-year-old stressing that she’d only been dating the elusive mystery man for a mere four weeks, her kisses with Chad appear to have put a dent in her chances of winning CBB. 

Tonight sees Jemma, Sam, Jordan Davies and Helen Lederer all face the public vote with one of them becoming the second housemate to be evicted from the Elstree compound.

Celebrity Big Brother continues tonight at 9pm on Channel 5.

Driving in blustery weather conditions can be nerve-racking at times, but one driver had the fright of their life on a narrow snowy highway. 

Dash cam footage captured the car travelling along the road behind a big lorry. 

Dense forest lined either side of the highway, which was fringed with layers of thick snow. 

After a car passed in the other direction, the driver in the lorry ahead suddenly slammed on their brakes.

The lorry swerved to the right side of the road, veering off into the snow. 

As the driver in the car tried to pass the huge vehicle, they were suddenly stopped in their tracks by the sight looming in front of them. 

Another lorry, this time in the oncoming direction, had spun out on the icy road. 

Its cargo swerved out to the side, smashing into the side rail on the highway. 

The lorry driver kept moving forward, so that its cargo was heading straight for the now stationary car in the middle of the road.

Incredibly the vehicle missed the car by an extremely narrow distance, leaving only icy mist in its wake. 

Another truck had pulled over on the side of the road in the oncoming direction. 

It suggested the lorry may have been trying to overtake when its wheels spun out.  

The extremely nerve-racking clip has gone viral since it was shared online. 

Uploaded to content site Imgur, the video has been viewed over 60,000 times. 

One user wrote: “Basic rule that keeps me alive… If the truck ahead is panic braking, you probably should too.”

Another shared: “I sat back and gripped the sides of my seat for this.”

A different video showed a lorry’s cargo nearly topple onto a car driving next to it.

Researchers from Bochum, Germany, and San Diego, California, say they’ve found the precise mechanisms that allowed diesel Volkswagens and Audis to engage or disengage emissions controls depending on whether the cars were being driven in a lab or driven under real-world conditions. As a bonus, the researchers also found previously-undisclosed code on a diesel Fiat 500 sold in Europe.

Auto manufacturers have been cheating on emissions control tests for decades, but until recently, their cheats were fairly simple. Temperature-sensing or time-delay switches could cut the emissions control system when a car was being driven under certain conditions.

These days, cars are an order of magnitude more complex, making it easier for manufacturers to hide cheats among the 100 million lines of code that make up a modern, premium-class vehicle.
