How many times have you watched a match with the greats — Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Chris Evert — and found your eyes fixed on the people kneeling by the courts retrieving dead balls, or the ones at the corners running after the missed shots on an ace?

Ballpersons — they insist you not call them “ballboys” or “ballgirls” — are an essential part of a pro match. They run, kneel, bend, throw and roll. They are some of the unsung heroes of tennis. Every year, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) holds tryouts for ballpersons a few weeks before the U.S. Open, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in late August through mid-September. This year, a minimum of 800 courageous souls registered to try out for the few coveted spots in this iconic New York event.

Hopefuls ages 14 to 60 (and older) waited in line on a hot summer day to get their chance. First-time applicant Ryuichi Nitta, 15, and his mother, Meg, were two of the first 400 in line. “I heard the line would be long, so I got there pretty early and waited for about three hours, which wasn’t as bad as it sounds,” says Ryuichi. What motivates them to wait in line for three hours to compete with hundreds for a chance to work long days in grueling heat and sustain very sore muscles? Knowing that they’ve landed the coolest summer job ever, basically. And there’s this: They can stand just inches away from their favorite tennis superstars. To hear it from Tina Taps, longtime director of U.S. Open Ballpersons, “This is America. Anyone has the opportunity. And with age, there are no boundaries.”

Taps is present through it all. She observes the tryouts, checks in continuously and stays from morning to night each day of the event. Most recently, we caught her buying a pizza at 11 p.m. from one of the vendors at the food village. “This is for some of the kids,” she says.

After tryouts and qualification matches, the lucky chosen ones will receive full head-to-toe uniforms, an hourly wage and the chance to work near the world’s top-ranked players. They are told to come to training for at least four days, for four hours each day. Ryuichi commuted from the Bronx to Queens to attend training every day for two weeks.

Starting this year, the Open is finally joining other Grand Slam tournaments in having ballpersons roll the balls to their colleagues, rather than tossing them overhand. The ballpersons program brought in Tiahnne Noble from the Australian Open to teach the new ball-roll technique. This means the ballpersons who work behind the baseline no longer need to throw the ball the length of the court, which also results in the program welcoming a wider group of well-rounded applicants.

The U.S. Open consists of 127 matches across five categories: men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. Six ballpersons are required for each match. Two occupy the net position, gathering dead balls and feeding them to the base positions located at each corner of the court. Bases retrieve balls from the nets and feed them to the players. Ballpersons sometimes don’t learn which court or player they’ll be assigned to until minutes before the match. They get this key information in the ballpersons lounge at the newly constructed Louis Armstrong Stadium, where they also rest and relax between matches.

Being a ballperson requires working on hot summer days, plus standing and running on your feet for hours. But there’s a reason some veterans keep returning to the job — some for 20-plus years: It’s rewarding on so many levels. As Meg Nitta, Ryuichi’s mother, puts it, “[I am] so happy to see Ryuichi will be a [ballperson] for Naomi Osaka’s match! Our family and relatives in Japan will also be watching.” It’s not just a summer job; it’s an honor.

Twelve years later, Newley returns to Australia’s line-up as a veteran and the only player remaining from the ‘06 squad.

It’s a significant effort the Sydney Kings swingman couldn’t be prouder to achieve.

This fulfilment was written all over Newley’s face on Wednesday when he was named in the Boomers’ team for the Gold Coast games, starting in April.

“I’m really excited to get in the green and gold and play in front of a home crowd,” Newley told The Daily Telegraph.

“It has been a lot of years in between drinks and I’m kind of showing my age a little bit, but it’s great to be back.

“We are one from one at the Commonwealth Games, so if we can keep up that tradition that would be a great thing.

“To be play at home is pretty cool, particularly up in North Queensland where I started my career.

“I’m sure the fans will really get behind us.”

Newley, 33, is also looking forward to passing on his knowledge to his younger Australian teammates.

He believes the Commonwealth Games can be a valuable platform for players to push for high honours.

“I said to the team back in August that they all should put their hands up for the Comm games,” he said.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for those that haven’t been to an Olympic Games yet.

“You are dealing with the village and other athletes, so it’s good to use this team as a bridging gap to make an Olympic team.”

Newley believes fellow King, Jason Cadee, can benefit greatly from his Commonwealth Games selection.

“I can’t wait to play alongside Jase,” he said.

“I remember taking him under my wing when he started in the Boomers program as an 18-year-old kid.

“To be in the team with him now is really fun. I’m excited for Jase. He has been rewarded for some great play with the Boomers.”

Sydney Flames stars Katie Ebzery and Belinda Snell were also selected in the Opals squad for April’s Commonwealth Games campaign.

Short track speed skater Charles Hamelin has spent a long time honing his instincts for one thing: racing.

And that’s “RACING” in neon lights, because the athletes in Hamelin’s chosen sport are as skilled and daring as any stock-car driver. 

“You have to be a racer to be a short tracker,” says Hamelin.

With two individual Olympic gold medals, another in the relay and 10 world titles, he’s one of the best racers ever in the game. In Pyeongchang, he’ll try to become the first Canadian ever to earn a third individual Olympic gold medal.

Here’s one of Hamelin’s masterful races — his gold medal-winning skate in 1,500 metres at the 2014 Sochi Olympics:

Twelve years after his first Olympics, Hamelin, from Sainte-Julie, Que., is still devoted to crafting the perfect race as he prepares for the upcoming Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. 

He says the work begins in his mind, by managing the equilibrium between stress and confidence.  

“You need to have a balance of everything so you can be clear in your mind what you do in a race — when to pass, when to go to the front, when to economize some energy.

“That’s when I find myself skating at my best. It’s when every part of my mind is well-balanced and I am confident going into the race.”

‘Anything can happen’

Each competition demands that Hamelin execute his strategy while calculating his energy levels and responding to what his competitors are doing.

“I trust my instincts really well,” he says. “You could race 10 times with the same four skaters and the race will end up different because short track is so unpredictable and anything can happen.”

No one’s arguing with that.

In Sochi four years ago, Hamelin’s Olympics began wonderfully but ended in disaster. After his impressive 1,500-metre gold, he fell in his 1,000m quarter-final. Days later, astonishingly, he slipped on a corner during his 500 qualifying heat, ending his hopes of defending the Olympic title he won in Vancouver.

Canadian officials blamed the ice quality, But Hamelin, now 33, isn’t interested in reflecting on what went wrong in those 2014 Games.

“I don’t think about Sochi anymore,” he insists. “My gold medal will be my memory.”

Indeed, Hamelin’s preparations for Pyeongchang don’t include looking back on 2014.

“If you live in the past, you’re not in a good zone,” he says.

Instead, there’s the rest of the world to worry about. 

Hamelin says that, in his time, short track has evolved into a much more competitive sport. 

“Right now we have, I would say, eight to nine countries that can have a skater that would be able to win individual races in World Cups.”

Hamelin says the Netherlands, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Japan and Russia have caught up to the historically strong short track nations — Canada, South Korea, China and the United States.

“It’s a field completely different than what it was four years ago and eight years ago,” he says. “You need to adapt your way of racing.”

Hamelin used to shoot to the front and control the race from there. But today there are more skaters who can pass him at the end, so it’s all about conserving energy.

One way he does this is by playing with where he enters the corners — what he calls his “tracks” — so that “it’s difficult to pass me towards the end of the race.”

While the bulk of Hamelin’s energy is pinpointed on his own success in Pyeongchang, he is mindful of his legacy and his younger teammates, such as rising star Sam Girard.

“I love everything about my sport and I will do everything to, yes, make myself successful, but also make my team successful,” says Hamelin, who is in his 15th World Cup season.

“I want to look back and be proud of all the athletes that will have as good a result as I did in the past, or even better results because we were able to make them better than me.”

Becoming better than Charles Hamelin would be a significant feat. And it may be an even loftier goal after Hamelin makes his mark on these Olympics.
