Federer was broken in his first service game, but bounced back strongly to win the match in 77 minutes and give Switzerland a 1-0 lead in the tie. Former world No. 7 Belinda Bencic can secure the tie win with victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the women’s singles rubber.

Federer started his Hopman Cup campaign with a straight sets win over Japan’s Yuichi Sugita. And although he started slowly against Khachanov, he quickly bounced back to win the opening set in 29 minutes.

The second set was an entertaining arm wrestle as both players produced powerful service games.

But Federer finally cracked the Russian in an epic tiebreak, saving a set point to secure the win on his third match point, courtesy of a successful challenge.

He might have all the tricks but Federer has a reputation for being one of the worst judges on tour of when to challenge, and the irony of how he wrapped up the match wasn’t lost on anyone.

Federer couldn’t look at the screen and the crowd cracked up laughing as the replay showed Khachanov’s ball landed just millimetres wide.

Earlier in the match the 36-year-old had made fun of his lack of success using the technology at the players’ disposal.

“I can’t watch, it’s too nerve wracking,” he joked.

“He’s the world’s best tennis player but he is the world’s worst challenger,” Basil Zempilas added in commentary for Channel Seven.

‘GROSS’ MOMENT IN CASH COMEBACK

Aussie legend Pat Cash made an unexpected comeback to tennis at age 52 when he went from the stands to the court to partner his pupil CoCo Vandeweghe at the Hopman Cup in Perth.

The American’s coach got his racquet out when Vandeweghe’s partner Jack Sock pulled out of the mixed doubles against Japan with a hip injury, suffered during his match against Yuichi Sugita earlier on Tuesday. He retired at 1-1 in the second set after losing the first 7-6 (7-1).

Cash’s appearance wasn’t the only bizarre aspect of the mixed doubles clash. Aussie teenager Maddison Inglis partnered Sugita because Naomi Osaka withdrew earlier with an unspecified illness, handing Vandeweghe a 6-0 6-0 win in their scheduled singles match.

The Americans were awarded the Fast4 mixed doubles match 4-0 4-0 because Osaka was not able to compete, so regardless of Cash’s performance, he was never in danger of having an influence on the result.

“I got warmed up nicely,” Cash said. “I had a few games where I’m in my peak and then I’m over it. And that was in the first 10 minutes. Then it was downhill.”

Cash had some interesting moments with the ballkids and line judges in the West Australian capital.

Australia’s Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt was also on court but on the opposite side of the country, partnering young gun Jordan Thompson at the Brisbane International.

Unfortunately, the homegrown talents couldn’t get it done against Grigor Dimitrov and Ryan Harrison, who won the round of 16 clash 6-3 1-6 (10-5).

AWKWARD BLUNDER MOCKED

Denis Shapovalov is one of the brightest young stars around but he’s not a household name just yet — that much was evident when he was welcomed to the court ahead of his first round clash with Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund at the Brisbane International.

The man with the microphone stumbled over his pronunciation of the Canadian’s name when he was in the tunnel waiting to come out.

The 18-year-old saw the funny side of it, as did women’s world No. 19 Madison Keys.

Canadian tennis writer Tom Tebbutt and Australian scribe Matt Trollope both mocked the announcer for getting Shapovalov’s name so wrong.

Edmund withstood a barrage of 18 aces from Shapovalov to win in three sets 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

MURRAY’S EMOTIONAL POST

Andy Murray is in grave doubt for the Australian Open and contemplating surgery on his troublesome hip after the former world No. 1’s withdrawal from the Brisbane International.

The three-time grand slam champion was to be the second seed at the Brisbane event but pulled out after failing to train on Tuesday.

The world No. 16 had hoped to play his first tournament match since July on Thursday — a second-round clash with American Ryan Harrison at Pat Rafter Arena. However, the 30-year-old again succumbed to a right hip injury that has kept him out of tournament play since Wimbledon.

In a lengthy and emotional Instagram post on Tuesday night — with a picture of him as a child — Murray said he was “really hurting inside” but would stay in Australia and decide his next move by the weekend.

“I’ve obviously been going through a really difficult period with my hip for a long time and have sought council from a number of hip specialists. Having been recommended to treat my hip conservatively since the US Open I have done everything asked of me from a rehab perspective and worked extremely hard to try get back on the court competing,” Murray wrote.

“Having played practice sets here in Brisbane with some top players unfortunately this hasn’t worked yet to get me to the level I would like so I have to reassess my options.

“Obviously continuing rehab is one option and giving my hip more time to recover. Surgery is also an option but the chances of a successful outcome are not as I high as I would like which has made this my secondary option and my hope has been to avoid that. However this is something I may have to consider but let’s hope not.”

Barring a miraculous recovery in the coming days, Murray looks destined to join fellow “Big Four” members Rafael Nadal (back) and Novak Djokovic (elbow) in missing the year’s opening grand slam in Melbourne starting on January 15.

Murray, the 2012 Brisbane champion, posted a photo of himself as a child and said the “little kid inside me just wants to play tennis and compete.

“I genuinely miss it so much and I would give anything to be back out there.

“I didn’t realise until these last few months just how much I love this game.

“Every time I wake up from sleeping or napping I hope that it’s better and it’s quite demoralising when you get on the court it’s not at the level you need it to be to compete at this level.

“Sorry for the long post but I wanted to keep everyone in the loop and get this off my chest as it’s really hurting inside.”

Alarm bells were ringing for Murray when he made his long awaited return to court and lost 6-2 to world No. 20 Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in a one-set exhibition match in Abu Dhabi last week.

Then the Scot — initially expected in Brisbane before Christmas — delayed his arrival in Queensland in another indication his fitness was not 100 per cent. It leaves the Brisbane International largely bereft of star power after the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal last week.

Porto: Savour the vintage charms of the old city https://briefnews.eu/porto-savour-the-vintage-charms-of-the-old-city/ https://briefnews.eu/porto-savour-the-vintage-charms-of-the-old-city/#respond Sat, 26 Aug 2017 01:59:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/porto-savour-the-vintage-charms-of-the-old-city/

PortoALAMY

If the steep hillsides don’t make you dizzy tasting the Port most certainly will

The city sits, fortuitously, at the mouth of the Douro river, about a third of the way down Portugal’s coastline, and its location, coupled with an often cool and humid climate, makes it perfect for storing and ageing Port.

It was Britons, Ana tells me, who discovered this more than 300 years ago, when a couple of English wine merchants visited Douro Valley, the centre of Portugal’s wine production.

Shipping home a few samples of this stronger version of the drink, which is boosted with brandy to add sweetness and alcohol content, a fashion was born. Before long, dozens of British merchants established themselves on the banks of the river in the district of Vila Nova da Gaia, just across from the small city of Porto. These include names many will recognise from the shelves of any decent wine store, such as Cockburn, Croft, Sandeman, Dow and Graham, where they remain to this day.

Taylor’s were among the first, setting up their lodge and warehouses in 1692. Today you can pop in for a tour, as you can with most of these producers, and the best bit, try a tasting. From tawny to ruby, dry to vintage, you’ll become an expert (or, after a couple, think you are) in no time.

Thankfully, Taylor’s also owns the handsome wine hotel, The Yeatman (its cellars hold more than 30,000 bottles and wine is even used in its spa treatments). It’s just across the road so you can stumble back to your room fairly effortlessly afterwards. But gazing out over the river from your balcony onto the stunning city vista, all terracotta rooftops, church spires and tall towers, you’ll be keen to explore, no matter how unsteady you are on your feet. In fact, that won’t much matter because Porto is built on a series of hills, so you’ll feel like you’re tilting most of the time anyway.

From Vila Gaia, you cross the impressive, arched, iron Dom Luis bridge, constructed in 1886 by a student of Gustave Eiffel (there are six bridges in total which span the Douro here; take a one-hour cruise from any of the boat companies lining the quayside to learn more about their history).

PortoALAMY

Porto’s pretty pastel alleyways

On the right lies Cais da Ribeira, the charming medieval waterfront area now a Unesco heritage site, lined with long, narrow houses tiled in colourful shades of bright yellow, green, red and blue, restaurants and cafés thronging their base.

The best way to get to know Porto is to walk around (ideally before rather than after your Port wine session). With a population of 300,000, it’s fairly compact. Streets are often uphill but they wind appealingly across the city, taking you past beautiful churches – don’t miss the baroque examples of Carmo and Carmelitas, on Gomes Teixeira Square, which boast elaborate blue-and-white tiles depicting religious scenes on their sides – or to jaw-dropping viewpoints such as the Miradouro da Vitória, where you can gaze back over to Vila Nova da Gaia and catch the twin turrets of the magnificent Se Cathedral among other picturesque houses and buildings.

Since I’m a glutton for punishment, and for an even better view, I also decide to clamber the 240 steps of the distinctive Torre de los Clérigos, the long, thin belltower of Clérigos church, which can be seen from most points of the city.

Holidaymakers can learn the history of Port production and also sample a glass or two

After all that exertion it’s time for some food. Porto has several specialities, including bacalhau – baked salted cod, served with potatoes. But one item which will really fill you up, not to mention soak up any alcohol you consume, is the francesinha: a layered sandwich filled with steak, sausage and ham, covered in melted cheese and served in a tasty tomato sauce – often with chips. Try it at Café Santiago on Rua Passos Manuel, which specializes in this mighty dish.

Fresh ingredients will most likely be bought at the city’s biggest market, Mercado do Bolhão, where farmers sell their produce, and where you can pick up olive oils, smoked meats, cheeses and more.

There’s just time to wander around Livraria Lello – an elegant bookshop near Clérigos church dating from 1869, which is one of the oldest in the country, and is credited with inspiring JK Rowling with the décor of Hogwarts due to its stained glass windows, sweeping staircases and wood panelling – or visit São Francisco church, whose interior is coated in nearly 100kg of gold leaf, before it’s time to head back to The Yeatman for a well-earned aperitif in its clubby bar.

Go on then barman – pass the Port.

Cheerleaders fired for ‘distracting’ players dubbed ‘lucky charms’ upon winning return https://briefnews.eu/cheerleaders-fired-for-distracting-players-dubbed-lucky-charms-upon-winning-return/ https://briefnews.eu/cheerleaders-fired-for-distracting-players-dubbed-lucky-charms-upon-winning-return/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 21:25:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cheerleaders-fired-for-distracting-players-dubbed-lucky-charms-upon-winning-return/

The reinstated cheerleaders for an English football team have been dubbed ‘lucky charms’ as they inspired the side to a 3-1 victory over Premier League outfit West Ham.

Billericay Town, who play in the seventh-tier Isthmian League Premier Division, initially hired cheerleading troupe ‘The Ricays’ to bring some glitz and excitement to the Essex-based outfit.

However, manager and owner Glenn Tamplin, a local millionaire businessman, swiftly gave the girls their marching orders after it emerged one had sent her number to a player. He feared the dancers would distract his side from winning promotion to the Football League.

“We have had to let the cheerleaders go as the lads were becoming unfocused and some of the girls (not all) sending their numbers to them.” Tamplin said at the time.

However, the group has since been reinstated as official match day support and made their return in the team’s landmark 3-1 victory over West Ham in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday.

The group performed in front of a record 4,600 crowd at the club’s AGP Arena as Billericay beat ‘The Hammers’, who play Manchester United in their Premier League opener on Sunday.

“It went fantastically and now it means we’re a good luck charm because every time we perform they have an amazing result,” cheerleader manager Bekka Batchelor said, the Star reported.

“The crowd seemed to really respond and we whipped them all up. With any luck we’ll be good motivation to get them coming back to the terraces every week.

“We’d like to think we give the younger girls – who might not all be as keen on the football – something to take an interest in,” she added.

Manager Tamplin may claim most of the credit for the win, having pumped his players for the match with a bizarre “kings of the jungle” speech in which he called his players ‘lions’.

Billericay have already made headlines this summer with the signings with their business in the transfer window. The club managed to pull off several coups including the acquisition of former Liverpool players Paul Konchesky and Jermaine Pennant, the latter of which scored the second goal of the game versus West Ham.

The game also marked the opening of a stand catering for the disabled, named in honor of local boy Harry Parker, who has cerebral palsy.

Bad Movie Night: The Unsung Charms of ‘Ishtar’ https://briefnews.eu/bad-movie-night-the-unsung-charms-of-ishtar/ https://briefnews.eu/bad-movie-night-the-unsung-charms-of-ishtar/#respond Mon, 22 May 2017 17:39:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bad-movie-night-the-unsung-charms-of-ishtar/ Welcome to “Bad Movie Night,” a biweekly feature in which we sift through the remains of bad movies of all stripes: the obscure and hilarious, the bloated and beautiful, the popular and painful. This week, on the 30th anniversary of its release, we look at the notorious 1987 megaflop Ishtar.

By most standards of general consensus, Ishtar would be classified as a bad movie. It was greeted with reviews of outright hostility; Roger Ebert called it “a truly dreadful film, a lifeless, massive, lumbering exercise in failed comedy,” while his cross-town, cross-aisle rival Gene Siskel announced, “the film fails at every level”; The New Yorker‘s Pauline Kael compared it to “a comedy act by a depressed person who keeps losing track of what’s meant to be going on.” It arrived in theaters 30 years ago this week riding a tidal wave of poor press equaled, at that point, only by the likes of Apocalypse Now and Heaven’s Gate, and with many of the same talking points: an out-of-control production, helmed by a perfectionist (in this case, writer/director Elaine May), beholden to the egos of its stars (Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman), its ballooning budget (a reported $ 51 million) signifying everything that was wrong with studio filmmaking. When it couldn’t manage to gross 1/10 of its budget in that opening weekend, its goose was cooked; Columbia Pictures’ $ 35 million write-down was reportedly a factor in the studio’s sale by Coca-Cola, and May never directed another feature. It was nominated for three Razzies (winning one), its title became short-hand for “Hollywood fiasco,” and Columbia’s eventual owner Sony never even bothered to release it on DVD.

However, the trouble with consensus is it doesn’t allow for unpredictability and nuance, and plot twist: Ishtar isn’t bad at all. In fact, it’s pretty damn good. Not great, mind you; some of it is clumsy, Beatty’s casting as the schlub to Hoffman’s ladies’ man is played with a bit too broad of a wink, and the third act’s stretch in the desert goes on too long (particularly a painfully miscalculated scene in which Hoffman tries to masquerade as an Arabic-speaking auctioneer). But it’s a film far better than its reputation, as those who have gone to the trouble of tracking down its tardy Blu-ray release a couple of years back discovered.

Beatty (who also produced) and Hoffman play “Rogers and Clark,” a pair of struggling, aging New York songwriters. Their tunes were written by May and the great Paul Williams, and they are hilariously bad – and they have no idea (“‘Wild Dangerous Business’ is as good as ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ any day of the week,” Hoffman insists). They sing them poorly in front of stunned audiences; cinematographer Vittorio Storaro shoots the performances with the unblinking flatness of a crime scene photo. Clad in their headbands, skinny ties, and sunglasses, they’re just a little too old for this, but they haven’t quite figured it out yet.

Yet somehow, their small-time agent (Jack Weston, very funny) gets them a booking, playing a small club in Morocco. When they hesitate, he won’t hear it: “A lot of acts would kill for a booking in North Africa!” So off they go, winding up stuck in the (fictional) nearby Ishtar, where they’re mistaken for two prophesized “messengers of God,” and find themselves wrapped up in a messy local civil war. May is a smart writer, and she crafts a sly political satire that goes in on the complexities and fluxes of the Reagan-era geopolitical landscape. Much of that comes via Charles Grodin as the resident CIA man; he’s so dry and hilarious, you can imagine watching a whole movie about his character, slithering through the Middle East and playing all sides (“The United States government will not be blackmailed! However, I see no difficulty meeting your timetable.”)

In fact, Ishtar is much more political than the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby “Road” pictures that were its inspiration (May even considered titling it Road to Ishtar, though the suits presumably assured her ‘80s moviegoers would have no idea what she was referencing). And she does emulate those films in the set-up — showbiz comedy in an exotic location, with two guys fighting over a pretty girl — but not really in execution. Beatty and Hoffman don’t have that duo’s ironic detachment or winking self-awareness; these two are closer to the earnestness of Laurel and Hardy (or the stupidity of Larry and Curly, especially when they’re briefly pitted on opposite sides of the conflict, two dim guys trying to outwit each other).

After all, it’s hard to imagine Hope and Crosby in Ishtar’s pivotal sequence on a New York building ledge, in which the film’s themes of delusion and disappointment come to a head as Hoffman contemplates suicide. “I’m a total failure,” he tells his pal. “I lived with my parents ’til I was 32. I’ve just dribbled my life away.”

“Hey, it takes a lotta nerve to have nothing at your age,” Beatty responds. “Most guys would be ashamed!”

It’s a terrific scene, though it’s not a conventional comic sequence – and if there’s one thing ‘80s comedies were, it’s conventional. In fairness to the critics of the era, several (including The New York Times’ Janet Maslin and The Los Angeles Times’ Sheila Benson) pegged the film as imperfect but telling, tagging its droll wit and deft observations. A week after its disastrous release, Charles Champlin (also of the L.A. Times) wrote a fabulous post mortem of its reception, noting that the breathless reports of its out-of-control production, endless editing room tinkering, and delayed release (from a prestige spot in December of the previous year) marked it as a flop before anyone had seen it. “Memory does not immediately yield a film for which so many critics, reporters and industry members were lying in wait, avid for signs of terminal weakness and early demise,” Champlin wrote. (Imagine if it were released into today’s version of film journalism. Good heavens.) And there’s also an argument to be made of some systemic sexism in those early reports; they didn’t put a lot of women at the helm of big, star-driven movies then (or now, frankly), and after it tanked, they did it even less. (May’s blacklisting was also unique to her sex; Michael Cimino directed four more movies in the 16 years after Heaven’s Gate.)

Or maybe it was simply (a cliché, I know, but here we go) ahead of its time. Of May’s four features, only The Heartbreak Kid (starring Ishtar’s Grodin) was a commercial hit; her spiky dialogue rhythms and complicated examinations of male/male dynamics aren’t always easy to get your arms around. Ishtar was a victim of bad buzz, but it also isn’t funny in the way that ‘80s comedies were expected to be funny — nor, really, in the style of the comedy teams May was so clearly influenced by. It’s closer to the character/situational cringe comedy of the past decade or so, though even that is too neat a box to stuff it into. It’s a film that resists categorization, staking a claim on a weird, absurdist territory of its own. For that, in the maddeningly generic landscape of ‘80s multiplexes, it was crucified. Now it’s celebrated. And rightfully so.

“Ishtar” is available to rent or buy on Amazon, iTunes, and the usual platforms.
