Alex Campos, a regular contributor to our favorite pop-culture art spot Gallery1988, was inspired by the iconic design, and created a new series based on a bunch of classic video games – and some Jim Carrey movies. “Everything’s Just Pee-Chee” ends its run tomorrow, but don’t panic if you haven’t made it over; we’ve selected a few of our favorites from the collection.

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, one of the breakout films was the charming father daughter dramedy Hearts Beat Loud. The film sees Nick Offerman as Frank, a widower preparing to close down his record shop and send his daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) off to med school across the country. In one final attempt to spark a bit more of a connection with his daughter, Frank convinces her to partake in a jam session. Their collaboration results in some outstanding original tunes that get them a surprising amount of attention online. Now you can partake in the buzz by listening to the title track from the film.
This is the first song Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons create together in the movie. It becomes a surprising success when it ends up on an indie playlist on Spotify, and Offerman becomes energized to turn them into a musical sensation called “We’re Not a Band,” inspired by his daughter’s reluctance to participate. You can watch the trailer over here to find out more about the movie.
The title song plays several times throughout Hearts Beat Loud, though not quite as excessively as That Thing You Do! from the movie of the same name. Thankfully, there are a few other original songs written by musician Keegan DeWitt, which are also performed by Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons in the movie, the latter proving that someone needs to cast her in a movie musical as soon as possible.
Here are the rest of the tracks on the soundtrack, including the score, also composed by DeWitt:
1. Hearts Beat Loud – Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons (3:18)
2. Blink (One Million Miles) – Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons (4:07)
3. Everything Must Go – Keegan DeWitt, Nick Offerman & Kiersey Clemons (3:09)
4. Red Hook (2:07)
5. We’re Not a Band (2:14)
6. Shut Your Eyes – Keegan DeWitt & Nick Offerman (2:36)
7. Hearts Beat Loud (Ballad) – Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons (4:13)
8. Conundrums (1:46)
9. Your Best American Girl – Mitski (3:33)
10. The Past (2:05)

Aside from the incredible tunes, Hearts Beat Loud is also a touching, charming indie that is worth seeing in between all the blockbuster noise this summer. Written and directed by Brett Haley, it’s a great movie for fathers and daughters to see, but it’s the kind of story anyone can enjoy and that soundtrack will have you tapping your toes the whole way through.
In the hip Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook, single dad and record store owner Frank (Nick Offerman) is preparing to send his hard-working daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) off to college, while being forced to close his vintage shop. Hoping to stay connected through their shared musical passions, Frank urges Sam to turn their weekly “jam sesh” into a father-daughter live act. After their first song becomes an Internet breakout, the two embark on a journey of love, growing up and musical discovery.
Hearts Beat Loud starts hitting theaters on June 8, 2018 and the soundtrack will be available the same day.

The Queen was once head of state for Sierra Leone, a country which provided the background to actor Idris Elba’s new sitcom In The Long Run .![]()
Any adult will tell you that middle school is one of the most awful parts of adolescence. Faces explode with acne, hormones are raging, conversations are awkward, and everyone sucks. So comedian Bo Burnham decided to make his feature writing and directorial debut recounting just how awful that time in all of our lives was with a wonderful, lively movie called Eighth Grade, and just like that we have a fresh new voice on the page and behind the camera.
Eighth Grade follows the extremely endearing and awkward Kayla (played by newcomer Elsie Fisher) during her final week of the last year of middle school before she heads off into high school. While Kayla may pretend that she has her act together in a series of undeniably teenage advice videos on YouTube about being yourself, she struggles everyday to be something more than the most quiet kid in her graduating class. Kayla is also tethered to her phone and laptop, which includes Instagram, finding advice from other YouTubers, jamming out to bubbly techno pop at the dinner table and loving Snapchat filters. But that can be said of nearly every single awkward teenager in this movie.
Bo Burnham takes us through the trials and tribulations of young Kayla in a manner not dissimilar from recent female-driven coming-of-age darlingslike Edge of Seventeen and Lady Bird. But what sets it apart is going back just a little bit further back in adolescence to this pivotal moment in Kayla’s life in such a bona fide fashion. Despite being a 27-year old male, Burnham has somehow perfectly tapped into, um, like, the mind of a 13-year old girl, or whatever, and um, the terrifying, like, experience that comes with it. And it’s not just as simple as filling dialogue with those hollow filler words you hear teens (and some less fortunate adults) spout off all the time. Burnham just perfectly understands life as a Millennial teen, and the script feels like it was lifted from the conversations of real teens somewhere in the United States.
Throughout this week of Eighth Grade, we see Kayla begrudgingly going to the birthday party of a rich, stuck-up popular girl, stumbling over her words as she has a pitiful conversation with her dreamy classmate Aiden (Luke Prael), getting annoyed with her pleasantly-trying-too-hard father (Josh Hamilton) and shadowing a high school senior girl named Olivia (Emily Robinson). All of these moments come with all the awkwardness and angst you’d expect from this ignominious time in Kayla’s life, and it couldn’t be more delightful.
While Burnham certainly deserves plenty of credit for this movie being an indie gem, much of the credit goes to Elsie Fisher. Though you might recognize her voice due to her role as Agnes in the Despicable Me franchise, this is a breakthrough performance for Fisher. Sure, she’s helped by the fact that she shot this movie during the summer between her own eighth grade and freshman years, but she does so much more than just be a teenager. Feigning a lack of confidence and portraying awkwardness isn’t easy to pull off without overdoing it. But everything Fisher does feels natural. While the “ums” and “likes” scattered throughout her everyday speech may seem like a default setting for a 13-year old, these elements were scripted by Burnham, and it’s a testament to Fisher’s work as an actress that they don’t feel scripted.
Also making this movie standout is a thumping, beeping, blasting electronic score by composer Anna Meredith. Though there are a couple instances when it feels a little invasive and doesn’t quite fit the scene, most of the time it’s a perfect companion to what’s happening on screen, especially for the hilarious slow-motion shots when Kayla stares in awe of Aiden from a distance.
Eighth Grade might seem like just a typical coming of age movie that comes out of Sundance every year, and in many ways it’s exactly that. But it’s also a coming of age narrative that we haven’t really seen presented in this light before. Whether it’s due to Elsie Fisher’s lovable turn as Kayla or Bo Burnham’s frustratingly accurate portrayal of life as a teen, Eighth Grade is full of life, even if it’s from the terrible teenage years of that life.

Teen romance movies are a dime a dozen, but Love, Simon has the benefit of being a major teen romance film revolving around a gay character. Sure, plenty of indie films and prestige flicks have explored the heartache of young gay love or the excruciating fear of coming out, but have any of them done it to an upbeat pop soundtrack? Not many.
Yes, the movie looks cheesy as hell, and yes the stars are as generically attractive as the ones you’ll find in any schlocky teen romance film — star Nick Robinson did first stretch his teen romance acting chops in 2017’s tearjerker Everything, Everything — but it’s still gives the spotlight to a gay lead in a major motion picture. And that’s huge.
The new Love, Simon trailer improves remarkably thanks to the Bleacher’s Jack Antonoff‘s soaring theme song, “Alfie’s Song (Not A Typical Love Song).” Until now, the marketing has veered dangerously close to being cloyingly sweet, but the new trailer is surprisingly wry and funny, contrasting Simon’s (Robinson) internal sexual identity struggle with his sweet relationships with his close-knit group of friends and his family.
And, because this is a teen movie from a major Hollywood studio, Love, Simon comes equipped with its very own pop soundtrack, now available for pre-order. Here is the track list:
Based loosely on on Becky Albertalli’s novel Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, Love, Simon is directed by Greg Berlanti — now mostly known for spearheading the admirably progressive DC TV shows like Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl — and written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us). The film also stars Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Miles Heizer, Keiynan Lonsdale, Logan Miller, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, and Tony Hale.
Here is the official synopsis for Love, Simon:
Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing.
Love, Simon is set to hit theaters on March 16, 2018.

She plays a writer who moves back to New York City after fleeing to London for a couple of years, only to find that she shares a building with the boy she left behind (Matthew Shear, so great in Mistress America). And he has a new girlfriend, unsurprisingly, so that’s… awkward. But they’re all adults, and this isn’t that tough, right? RIGHT?
Check out the trailer:
The Boy Downstairs opens in New York on February 16 and in Los Angeles on February 23, with more cities (hopefully) to follow.

Now listen, I’m no killjoy when it comes to celebrating this or that holiday. I’ll gladly carve a pumpkin and hang some decorations during Halloween and you can bet your boots that I’ll fly a flag during Independence Day. But if you look around my house for heart-shaped candy bowls during Valentine’s Day or bunny statuettes during Easter, you’re not going to find much. Overall, our house is decorated in a rather minimalist style, really.
But when Christmas rolls around, things are a bit different. We have two trees inside and lights adorning the windows and roofline outside. There are garlands aplenty inside and out, several miniature Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus figurines, snowmen, candles, and all sorts of other decorations. And when it’s time for the Christmas feast (on those years my house hosts, anyway), out comes the Christmas dinnerware.
If you’re hosting a holiday dinner this Christmas, or if you’re looking for a very last-minute gift for someone you know who loves hosting holiday feasts, then the Spode Christmas Dinnerware Set is the perfect buy. (And yes, as of the time of this writing, you can still get these charming plates, mugs, platters, and more in time for this year’s Christmas celebration.)
The salad and dinner plates and mugs included in the basic 12-piece set are perfect for dressing up a holiday table and work beautifully to complement any other white dinnerware and clear glassware. But if you want to really go for it and dress up your Christmastime table, Spode also offers platters, serving bowls, two shapes of goblet, water glasses, soup bowls, and even flatware, all of which features the same charming Christmas tree designs.
Beyond the timeless style of the pieces from the Spode dinnerware lineup, you will also appreciate the durability of this stuff. Made from solid porcelain, these plates, mugs, platters, and bowls are safe for use in the freezer, fridge, microwave, dishwasher, and even in the oven. They resist chips and cracking and should last for years if treated with a bit of care.
Start your collection of Spode Christmas dinnerware this year and add to it over the subsequent holidays, or make the investment now and set up a stunning holiday tableau this Christmas weekend.

We asked her about what guides her as an artist. “I jump around from job to job so i have to set aside a giant chunk of time to make art,” she says. “I thrive on assignment. I like to set a show date and then draw and paint for a month until my hand hurts. And at first it’s usually kinda slow going, but once I hit the groove, it feels awesome. Like I could draw forever. So setting the assignment, finding the groove, and then working as much as possible. All the while listening to music. Music helps the motor.”
And, like any other artist, she has a story she’d like to tell, and a vision of the world to convey. “I think of all of my cartoons as mini stories,” she explains, “I guess I’m telling the stories of these characters I make. I rarely plan what I’m going to draw. It just starts to come out and I go with it. The goal is for people to see a bit of themselves in it. Something they relate to. I keep the character faces so simple so that the viewer can project their own emotions onto it. I try to keep it light and funny for the most part. It’s a weird time out there. I just hope my work can bring some pops of joy into someone’s day.”

Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) and her best friend Julie Steffans (Beanie Feldstein) in Lady Bird.
Beanie Feldstein understands how important a nickname can be. Born Elizabeth Feldstein, her British nanny nicknamed her “Elizabeanie,” which quickly shortened to “Beanie” and stuck.
“‘Elizabeth’ doesn’t feel related to me at all,” the 24-year-old actor said in a New York coffee shop as she played with her silver cursive “Beanie” necklace. “I don’t know if I ended up fitting the name or the name ended up fitting me. But I love it.”
It’s almost too serendipitous that the 24-year-old actor now finds herself the breakout actor in a movie titled after a nickname: Lady Bird. Greta Gerwig’s new film is already poised to soar this awards season. After premiering at the Telluride Film Festival to rave reviews, the movie currently holds a 100% rating on RottenTomatoes, and has continued to garner majorcriticalacclaim.

At the center of this year’s indie darling is Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (played by Saoirse Ronan), an outspoken, pink-haired high school senior from Sacramento. She, like Feldstein, prefers to go by her self-styled moniker. Feldstein plays Julie Steffans, Lady Bird’s nicknameless best friend.
Julie’s everything Lady Bird isn’t: painfully shy, a dedicated student, and endlessly loyal. The girls’ odd-couple dynamic lends the movie some of its most hilarious and heart-wrenching scenes: eating unconsecrated Communion wafers and talking about masturbating in the bathtub; getting high together on Thanksgiving; cry-belting “Crash” by the Dave Matthews Band from their reclined car seats. They even go to prom together and pose for cheesy Eternal Flame ‘03 photos.
Julie is a sweet second fiddle, a calming counterpart to Lady Bird’s extroversion, and a huge departure from the characters Feldstein has mostly played until now: wild party girls — she had a one-line role in Orange is the New Black as someone who roofies her own drink, and played one of the three central sorority sisters in 2016’s raunchy comedy Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising — who don’t tend to mirror her own personality.
“It’s so funny to me when I get to play these crazy girls!” Feldstein said. “I’m such a goody-goody. I’m here 15 minutes early, I have my schedule, I have my planner. With Julie, when I read ‘sweet, chubby theater girl,’ I was like, Whaaat?”
The role of Julie offered Feldstein a more relatable character interpretation. When she first read Gerwig’s script, she felt “more emotionally connected” to Julie than she ever had to an on-page character before.
“I’d never felt anything like that before,” she said. “I was like, ‘If I don’t get this, I will be devastated.’”
Feldstein attends the Lady Bird premiere during the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
In fact her attachment was so immediate and uncharacteristically intense that she got a rare case of pre-audition jitters. Usually, Feldstein takes a very grounded, confident approach to auditioning.
“I have this saying: They either want The Bean or they don’t want The Bean,” she laughed. “I just am my own thing. It works or it doesn’t work. So I don’t get that nervous because it’s either gonna be me or it’s not gonna be me.”
But her audition for Lady Bird was different; she was so nervous that she even remained unusually tight-lipped. Usually a self-described “Chatty Cathy,” Feldstein didn’t tell anyone she was up for the role, not even her mom. She auditioned opposite Gerwig herself in New York, and tried to keep her goal as simple as possible: “Listen and respond honestly to what she’s giving you.” When she found out she got the role, she FaceTimed her mom, sobbing, and had to explain everything from the beginning.
“I’m not [Julie], but I know her,” Feldstein said. “At the core, we share a similar sensibility: deep, deep love for friends, loyalty, and a true love for theater.”
Feldstein, who currently lives in New York with her best friend from middle school, moved back into her parents’ house in Los Angeles to film Lady Bird. She has two older brothers, but they’ve been out of the family home for a long time — Jordan is 16 years her senior, and actor Jonah Hill is 10 years older. Between sleeping in her childhood bedroom again and often putting on a school uniform to play Julie, Feldstein immediately felt like she was back at Harvard-Westlake, the private school in California she attended for middle and high school.
But for all her similarities to Julie, Feldstein had a very different high school experience. While Julie excels academically and discovers theater near the end of school, Feldstein struggled to find firm academic footing until her junior year, and is a seasoned thespian who’s been singing since age 5. She’s currently starring in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway opposite Bette Midler, a gig producer Scott Rudin (who served as producer on both Lady Bird and Hello, Dolly!) suggested she audition for.

That extreme discrepancy in performance experience levels presented a challenge for Feldstein, especially during one of Lady Bird’s most charming scenes: the auditions for the school production of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. Everyone else, including Lady Bird, belts out Sondheim tunes to flowery piano accompaniment. Julie sings a hymn she knows by heart, totally a cappella. Her hands are shoved in her pockets and she nervously sways in her white tennis shoes. Her voice rings out pleasantly thin and soft, and sounds wholly untrained.
“I have to tell you, I was so nervous for that scene,” Feldstein sighed. “Julie wouldn’t have had professional training. I’ve had years of voice lessons and experience, so I wanted to make sure the sound of her voice was right. I tried to sweeten up my tone as much as possible. I wanted to make sure it was Julie singing, not me singing.”
High school theater also ties strongly into Feldstein’s group of friends. She has some close female friends from her time studying sociology at Wesleyan College — she has a gold ring with four inset stones and “The Ladies” inscribed on the inside, a graduation present she and her three best collegiate friends received from their parents. But her closest bonds were forged during Westlake musical theater productions. Her best friends still include most of the cast of their school’s rendition of Into the Woods (including her high school prom date, Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen star and Tony Award–winner Ben Platt).
“I feel extremely lucky in that I have a very tight-knit group of friends. I feel like I have so many versions of that Lady Bird/Julie relationship,” she said. “But our high school group is really special.”

Feldstein also gained a new friendship through filming Lady Bird: lead actor Saoirse Ronan. The two actors walked into the first day of rehearsal wearing the same color nail polish on their fingernails (purple) and toenails (light blue). With Gerwig’s blessing, they decided to keep the same polish for all of filming, and spent their downtime goofing off and quoting Bridesmaids together.
“I think the bond we created as Lady Bird and Julie stemmed from our own love of each other,” she laughed. “She makes everyone around her better. We just fell in love, there’s no other way to put it. I am in love with her. She’s just the best.”
Now, Feldstein isn’t really sure what’s next. She’s heard all the awards season buzz, and she truly believes it’s deserved, but she hasn’t fully absorbed any of it yet. She can still hardly believe she landed the role.
“This is once in a lifetime. This is a very special thing. I can’t believe I’m here,” she said, grinning widely. “I could never in a million years have predicted this for myself.”
