The last two seasons have gone according to plan for the mighty Stamps until the championship game.

They were the heavy favourites two years ago against Ottawa only to lose to Henry Burris and the Redblacks in overtime.

They were heavy favourites last year against Toronto only to lose to Ricky Ray and the Argos in a nail-biter — who can forget that goal line fumble by the Stamps?

To say it has been repeat disappointments for the Stampeders is an understatement as they were just a few plays away from being back-to-back Grey Cup champions.

How is it, then, that a team could find the composure to get back to the Grey Cup, after devastation the last two years?

Perhaps the motivation to right the wrongs of the past was enough to spur these Stamps onto Edmonton for another shot at glory.

Now quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stamps are heading back to the Grey Cup in a rematch of the 2016 game Calgary lost to the Redblacks. It's a chance at ultimate redemption.

Bo Levi Mitchell seals the victory

The 22-14 win on Sunday over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was somewhat underwhelming. At times it slowed to a defensive halt.

But with about six minutes left in the game and Calgary leading 14-11, Mitchell orchestrated a drive to put the game out of reach.

Mitchell wasn't spectacular throughout the game, going 17 for 31 passing for 214 yards and three touchdowns. But with the game on the line he marched Calgary down the field with a seven-play 74-yard touchdown drive capped by a brilliant pass and catch to Eric Rogers in the end zone.

That put Calgary up by 10 points with just a little more than three minutes left in the game, a deficit the Bombers could never overcome.

Many have speculated this could be Mitchell's last game at McMahon Stadium as he may head south with NFL aspirations. If it was, it was vintage Mitchell — finding a way to win.

This now marks the fourth time Mitchell will enter the Grey Cup game as a starter. He won his first start, only to lose the last two. Now he'll hope to lead Calgary to another championship.

'Tired of seeing the Stampeders'

This is now the fourth time in the last five years the Stampeders are heading to the Grey Cup.

They won it all against Hamilton in 2014. But their last two meltdowns in the title game have been well-documented.

The West trophy presentation celebrations in the south end zone of McMahon Stadium after the game Sunday couldn't have been more subdued and reserved — it was as if the Stampeders wanted no part of what seems to have become somewhat routine to them all. They want the big prize.

Calgary's head coach Dave Dickenson could barely look at the trophy.

He quickly shuffled it along to his players before being asked to share a few words over the loud speakers inside the stadium.

"A lot of Canada is tired of seeing the Stampeders in the Grey Cup but tough luck, we're bringing our team to Edmonton," Dickenson said. "We have great fans and a great city. The city is looking for something like this."

Spy charm? After interviewing Putin, Fox host set off to vacation in St. Petersburg, Russia https://briefnews.eu/spy-charm-after-interviewing-putin-fox-host-set-off-to-vacation-in-st-petersburg-russia/ https://briefnews.eu/spy-charm-after-interviewing-putin-fox-host-set-off-to-vacation-in-st-petersburg-russia/#respond Mon, 23 Jul 2018 02:22:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/spy-charm-after-interviewing-putin-fox-host-set-off-to-vacation-in-st-petersburg-russia/ While Fox News anchor Chris Wallace and Vladimir Putin were at loggerheads during their sit-down in Helsinki, Wallace seems to have decided to see for himself where they make them like that, and he set off for a Russian holiday.

Wallace, a veteran Fox News host who interviewed Putin in the wake of the Monday summit with US President Donald Trump, then left for a vacation to Russia, he revealed to the New York Times. His first destination, none other than Putin’s native St. Petersburg.

The anchor, whose grilling of Putin was nowhere near amicable, told NYT that he “had a few doubts” about his choice of a holiday destination, but eventually decided to go for it.

“But I figured, Why not?” Wallace said.

Given the escalating anti-Russian sentiment in the US, that reached a pinnacle following the Helsinki summit with cries of “treason” and “disaster” by mainstream media, St. Petersburg might not seem like an obvious holiday destination.

At the end of their roughly half-hour interview, Wallace was apparently still not intimidated enough by one of the most demonized men around, so he revealed to Putin an itinerary of his trip. Putin, Wallace said, was glad that he chose to spend more time in St. Petersburg than in Moscow, including a visit to the famed Mariinsky Theater.

Only when Putin asked how much time he was planning to spend in each city, Wallace remembered who he was dealing with.

“I was a little worried about that. Why does he want to know?”

Speaking about interview arrangements and Putin’s only precondition – that it must be broadcast in full – Wallace said that made him realize that “that he [Putin] wanted to get across to Western viewers, to American viewers, in particular, that we can do business.”

Wallace, who has already started his Russia vacation, told the NYT that “there’s been no sign of any trouble or anything at all” during his stay in St. Petersburg. Moreover, he has acquired a kind of a celebrity status in the Russian northern capital, with passersby recognizing him on several occasions as “the fellow who interviewed President Putin.”

‘Deeply unhappy’ Sarah Ferguson continues public charm offensive after royal wedding snub https://briefnews.eu/deeply-unhappy-sarah-ferguson-continues-public-charm-offensive-after-royal-wedding-snub/ https://briefnews.eu/deeply-unhappy-sarah-ferguson-continues-public-charm-offensive-after-royal-wedding-snub/#respond Thu, 17 May 2018 12:44:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/deeply-unhappy-sarah-ferguson-continues-public-charm-offensive-after-royal-wedding-snub/

Sarah Ferguson, the ex wife of Prince Andrew, 58, visited Huddersfield yesterday.

The Duchess of York seemed in good spirits despite reports she is “deeply unhappy” about matters related to royal wedding invitations.

On Monday last week it was reported that Fergie, the mother of Prince Harry’s cousins, Princess Eugenie, 28, and Princess Beatrice, 29, is not invited to the wedding reception of her nephew.

However, the redhead is invited to the ceremony at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

According to reports Prince Charles, who is planning the reception, made the decision not in invite his brother’s ex wife.

An insider told Mail Online: “Numbers are limited to the evening party, she is not a member of the Royal Family any more and Prince Charles simply doesn’t have time for her.

“He just can’t see why she is still such a big part of his brother’s life.”

Prince Harry is reported to have made a point of inviting his aunt to his wedding after she was not invited to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s nuptials in 2011.

However, familial ties between Fergie and her ex husband are said to be mended.

According to an insider Sarah Ferguson still lives with Prince Andrew, 58, at the Royal Lodge.

Yesterday Sarah posted images to her Twitter account detailing her trip to Huddersfield.

She wrote: “Extraordinary and inspirational collections from The Textile Practice Year 1 @HuddersfieldUni.

“The finalists designing from their brief of imagery around the word ‘Apothecary’ @ADAHuddersfield @HUDVC #textiles #design.”

She also shared images of herself visitng a local charity.

She wrote: “So honoured to visit @Ruddisretreat in Huddersfield who raise funds for retreats for children with cancer and their families @HuddersfieldUni @HUDVC #huddersfield.”

Sarah Ferguson was making merry at St. James’ Palace enjoying herself and socialising with a wine glass in hand, just days before the royal wedding yesterday.

Recently engaged Princess Eugenie, 28, attended the event with her mother, showing off her huge engagement ring.

HRH Princess Eugenie of York was given a rare “lotus blossom” sapphire, which an expert has valued at around £7,000 – modest for a royal ring.

The light pink ring is an oval cut, flanked by diamonds and set on a gold band.

A padparadscha sapphire like Eugenie’s is characterised by a colour that is a mixture of red and yellow, creating a pink tone.

Fourth Time's The Charm https://briefnews.eu/fourth-times-the-charm/ https://briefnews.eu/fourth-times-the-charm/#respond Mon, 27 Nov 2017 01:40:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fourth-times-the-charm/

Cornell University food behavior scientist Brian Wansink has retracted yet another problematic study. This makes his fourth full retraction this year, along with at least eight corrections published or forthcoming.

The just-retracted paper, which looked at the shopping habits of World War II veterans, was published in 2016 in the journal Frontiers of Psychology. In a retraction note posted on Friday, the editors wrote that they have found “there is no empirical support for the conclusions of the article.”

The editors wrote that someone had alerted the publisher with concerns about the article’s validity. The journal decided to withdraw it after an expert evaluated the study’s raw data, according to the editors. The specific nature of the errors was not disclosed.

Wansink, Cornell, and the editors of Frontiers of Psychology did not immediately return requests for comment.

Wansink has faced scientific misconduct allegations for at least 50 of his studies. Journals have so far retracted four papers — one of them twice, as BuzzFeed News reported last month — and corrected (or planned to correct) at least eight.

The latest forthcoming correction, as BuzzFeed News reported earlier this week, was about the habits of household cooks. A ninth article, about vegetable-naming, also stands to be corrected or retracted.

The study just retracted was reportedly based on surveys of 355 World War II veterans and their shopping habits. Those who experienced heavy trauma in combat, versus those who experienced light trauma, tended to be more open to switching brands, trying new products, and buying the cheapest option, the authors claimed.

BuzzFeed News first reported in August that Wansink and his collaborators were re-examining a batch of papers about World War II veterans, including the newly retracted article.

In addition to Wansink, the paper’s authors were Marc Rockmore, an economist at Clark University, and Ozge Sigirci, a former graduate student in Wansink’s Food and Brand Lab at Cornell. Neither Rockmore nor Sigirci immediately responded to requests for comment.

A year ago, Wansink praised her as “the grad student who never said ‘no’” to doing extra data analyses in a blog post that kicked off the subsequent flurry of outside criticism and corrections.

Sigirci has also collaborated with Wansink on one other article that has since been retracted and two others that have been corrected.

How to charm the bots in charge of hiring for your dream job https://briefnews.eu/how-to-charm-the-bots-in-charge-of-hiring-for-your-dream-job/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-charm-the-bots-in-charge-of-hiring-for-your-dream-job/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 02:30:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-charm-the-bots-in-charge-of-hiring-for-your-dream-job/

As artificial intelligence technology rapidly evolves to transform industries like health care and virtually assist people’s lives, the hope is matched by concern about the displacement of human roles. At the same time, deployed AI platforms in today’s business world augment processes at a more rapid pace than they replace them. While we’ve yet to determine the exact impact of AI, a recent report from the World Economic Forum estimates automation will replace at least 5 million jobs by 2022. One thing is clear today: AI is driving fundamental changes in how people conduct their jobs and how companies think about staffing for the future.

In addition to taking on repetitive tasks, we’ve developed AI-powered technologies for positions that involve digital engagement with people, such as recruiting and human resources. In fact, millions of recruiters currently use AI and machine learning firms such as Ideal to scan thousands of resumes and LinkedIn pages in order to select relevant candidates with precision. So, if you’re not getting a call back, it could be because AI weeded you out of the potential hiring pool. And while one platform may deny your shot at a dream position, another might spare you from a career misstep.

It’s also important to note that AI’s utility in the HR realm reaches far beyond merely selecting candidates. AI-driven platforms such as Plum match candidates to companies based on pre-employment screening questions aimed at determining behavioral fit. They actually erase the need for a resume completely by taking names, education, and experience out of the initial recruitment phase. They give as much focus to why you are successful as they give to what you have accomplished. Meanwhile, Knockri uses video to qualify potential employees. The technology measures a job applicant’s verbal and nonverbal communication skills through video responses. Unlike traditional video interview platforms, the AI tool ensures name, gender, race, and even accents are never a factor when short-listing desirable candidates.

In the future, job seekers must work with AI systems to both find the right positions and get a foot in the door with potential employers. This dual reality presents new challenges for people looking for a chance to change careers, go for a more challenging job, or simply to secure a steady paycheck. In order to keep pace, here are a few tips for my fellow humans on how to craft an attractive summary of professional experience for a formidable reader without a heartbeat.

Tap into your creativity

If you want to get your foot in the door at a new company that uses AI technology for HR, unfortunately, you need to leave your resume design skills at home. It’s not unusual for recruiters to use filtering software that seeks out specific words that match the terms in the actual job posting. Resumes that come across as too generic or out-of-bounds will be passed over by the bots.

Yes, creativity can be advantageous, but it needs to be considered. If you are a software engineer, for example, you can express creativity during a coding test to show a unique and simple way to solve a complex problem. Or, if you are a graphic designer, layout, color palette, and font selections are important indicators of your style and aptitude when presenting your portfolio. Ultimately, job seekers should aim to show a unique perspective of their own value proposition in order to stand out.

Learn to chat with the chatbots

Chatbots are the first line of defense for most companies with high volume hiring practices. Employers commonly use services like Karen.ai to sort through their applicants. The days of firing off identical resumes to multiple job openings are officially over. During a chatbot-led interview process and in traditional cover letters, today’s applicants must prioritize relevance to the particular job they’re applying for over experiences that show off their personalities or general career trajectories. Chatbots assess job seekers throughout their entire online discussion. Accordingly, they need to communicate with chatbots in a professional and conversational manner for a higher chance of advancing beyond each step of the recruitment process.

Engage with internship programs

Corporate internships are now a college staple. But imagine sourcing your own projects that allow you to test-drive potential employers — rather than the other way around. Circumventing traditional employment tactics is the way of the future, and startups like Riipen help students avoid the painful job search. The company helps students gain optimal experience through an internship matchmaking process. AI is working behind the scenes to make this new curated talent pipeline dynamic a reality.

Embrace a shared career future

I believe the shift toward AI-assisted recruiting creates a job search environment that is here to stay. Companies will increasingly look to AI-powered software to sort through applications. This means job applicants need to write about their backgrounds with blunt clarity, using common language to reveal relevant job experience. Applicants should also prepare to enter the recruitment process acknowledging that AI seeks to understand them as people, rather than as a list of accomplishments. Ultimately, understanding how to cater resumes and applications for these systems will become imperative for job seekers already dealing with crowded markets and evolving employment requirements.

No one has ever accused the Infiniti QX80 SUV of being small, but for 2018, Infiniti wanted to make it look bigger, and this latest refresh (the model’s second, following a light redo for 2015) achieves that goal. The other thing this update achieves is to make the QX80 less ugly. Indeed, the big rig may have gone from being the worst-looking Infiniti to one of the best. READ MORE ››

You know, the kind of bananas that are spotted like leopards and tomatoes so overripe they collapse under even your sharpest knife. There are no precious display stands for this fruit — just plastic crates in obnoxious colors and cardboard boxes soaked in sweet juice. Murphy paints familiar stands around the city and corner stores, highlighting the weird and charming logos of brand produce, like Foxy. Here’s what’s happening:

  • President Trump’s revised order banning travel from six Muslim-majority countries for three months and halting the refugee resettlement program for four months was to go into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday.
  • Trump’s original travel ban — which went into effect immediately after he signed it on Jan. 27 — caused widespread chaos at airports across the country and confusion about who, exactly, was not permitted to enter the US. That order, allegedly to protect the country from terrorists, was subsequently blocked by federal judges.
  • The new order was to cover people traveling from Sudan, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen and all refugees. For a full breakdown of the differences between the original and new order, read this.
  • However, on Wednesday evening, a federal judge in Hawaii blocked the revised order from taking effect, essentially maintaining the status quo.
  • Trump lashed out at the court after the decision, calling it “unprecedented judicial overreach” and suggesting the ruling was made “for political reasons.”
  • The Hawaii case included multiple legal challenges filed to stop the new ban. Read about the hearings that took place in courtrooms in Maryland, Washington State, and Hawaii on Wednesday here.

Trump calls travel ban ruling “unprecedented judicial overreach” during Tennessee rally

President Trump lashed out at the courts Wednesday after a federal judge in Hawaii blocked his revised travel ban just hours before it was set to take effect.

Trump referred to the decision issued by US District Judge Derrick Watson as “unprecedented judicial overreach” while speaking to a crowd during a rally in Nashville. He made the comment just hours after Watson issued a temporary restraining order that prevents the president’s travel ban from being enforced.

The ban had been set to go into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday.

Trump said the ruling “makes us look weak,” and asked people in the crowd if they thought “it was done by a judge for political reasons.”

Trump said the second travel ban was a “watered down” version of his earlier order, which was also blocked in the federal courts.

“I think we have to go back to the first one and go all the way, which is what I wanted to do in the first place,” he added.

Trump went on to say that the “danger is clear, law is clear, the need for my executive order is clear.”

“I was elected to change our broken and dangerous system and thinking in government that has weakened and endangered our country and left our people defenseless,” he said.

WASHINGTON – A federal judge in Hawaii has blocked President Trump’s second attempt at a refugee and travel executive order set to take effect after midnight.

Three federal judges heard staggered arguments across the country — from morning arguments in Maryland to morning arguments in Hawaii to mid-day arguments in Washington state.

The order came less than six hours until the new executive order is due to go into effect.

Federal judges weigh whether to block Trump’s second refugee and travel order

Jonathan Ernst / Reuters

GREENBELT, Md. – With President Trump’s second attempt at a refugee and travel executive order set to take effect after midnight, a federal judge in Maryland heard arguments on Wednesday morning on challengers’ efforts to stop that from happening. Hours later, another federal judge across the country heard arguments on Hawaii’s request to halt enforcement.

The executive order, which would temporarily suspend immigration from six countries as well as the US refugee program, will take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET Thursday. Challengers have gone to court in the week and a half since Trump signed the order on March 6 to try to block it.

US District Judge Theodore Chuang didn’t rule from the bench after hearing the arguments in Maryland. He said he would try to issue an order later in the day, but wouldn’t guarantee it. Chuang didn’t signal which way he would rule, but did ask both sides to share their preferences for what he should do if he decided to block at least certain parts of the executive order.

The second hearing, before US District Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii, took place about five hours after the first ended. He also did not rule from the bench — but promised an order in the case before midnight ET.

Trump administration defends new travel order in court

Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

WASHINGTON — On Tuesday evening, the Trump administration’s lawyers argued to the federal judge who previously halted enforcement of the original refugee and travel ban that the new executive order, signed by President Trump on March 6, should not be subject to the prior injunction.

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson has argued that the Feb. 3 injunction against the original executive order should apply to the two provisions from the original ban that were reinstated, albeit with some changes, in the new executive order, which is due to go into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET Thursday.

Specifically, Washington’s lawyers argue the subsections of the new executive order announcing the 90-day halt to travel from a number of majority-Muslim nations and the 120-day halt to the refugee program are virtually the same as those provisions enjoined in the original order.

Fall for Macedonia's sleepy charm in Ohrid https://briefnews.eu/fall-for-macedonias-sleepy-charm-in-ohrid/ https://briefnews.eu/fall-for-macedonias-sleepy-charm-in-ohrid/#respond Sat, 11 Mar 2017 15:19:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fall-for-macedonias-sleepy-charm-in-ohrid/

Overlooking the extraordinarily blue waters of its eponymous lake, Ohrid enjoys a stunning position that is best viewed from a boat.

From there you will see the town’s terracotta roofs broken up by centuries-old church spires (the city claims once to have had 365) and overlooked by the turreted walls of Car Samoil’s Castle.

Ohrid has transformed itself from Macedonia’s religious centre to its busiest holiday resort and its beaches are the best by far in this landlocked nation.

However, a planned new lakeshore development will likely change this sleepy town forever, making now a great time to go.

TELL ME MORE…

Outside the summer months Ohrid seems like a sleepy place and this is at the core of its charm: the cobbled streets with traditional Ottoman houses form a maze that leads up the hillside to the Gorna Porta, where the old town meets the ancient amphitheatre and the fortress.

Here you will still see elderly women dressed in black carrying groceries home from the market and hanging out washing over the ancient lanes.

The famous churches that dot the old town and the areas around it are little short of miraculous survivors: the Sveta Sofia Cathedral is an 11th-century structure that includes Byzantine frescoes that can still be seen in the apse, while the Church of Sveti Jovan at Kaneo is one of the most photographed places in the Balkans, with its wonderful silhouette framed by the waters of Lake Ohrid beyond.

UNMISSABLE EXPERIENCES

Ambling along the over-water wooden walkway past Lake Ohrid’s cliffs takes you from the heart of the old town to the idyllic sandy cove of Kaneo.

Order a plate of fried fish at the relaxed Letna Bavca Kaneo and then cool off in the placid waters of the lake.

The view of the Church of Sveti Jovan from here is magnificent, as are the craggy cliffs around you.

Lounge about in swimming costumes drinking beers with the locals for the quintessential Ohrid experience.
