CALGARY — The 2018 CFL season is down to four teams. And for two of those fanbases, a Grey Cup celebration has been a long time coming. Winnipeg and Hamilton have the two longest Grey Cup droughts in the league — it's been 19 years since the Ticats last tasted football supremacy, while Winnipeg has forgotten what it even tastes like. Not since 1990 have the Blue Bombers hoisted the trophy, but optimism in Winnipeg hasn't been this high for a long time. Meanwhile, their respective opponents in the East and West Finals have been there, done that quite recently. Ottawa and Calgary are no strangers to playing for the Grey Cup. The Redblacks shocked the Stamps two years ago in Toronto to claim the championship. Calgary has played in back-to-back Grey Cup games only to lose both in dramatic fashion. The Stampeders did win the Grey Cup in 2014, however. This final showdown of the season between Hamilton and Ottawa has all sorts of drama surrounding it. The two teams have met three times this year, with the Redblacks always victorious. But clear the slate in the playoffs — it's a one-game showdown in the nation's capital. Ottawa is hosting the East final for the third time in the last four years. Since returning to the league five years ago, the team has been nothing short of sensational. Should the Redblacks beat Hamilton on Sunday, it will be their third Grey Cup appearance. It's hard not to mention what happened the last time these two teams met in the East Final in Ottawa during the 2015 season. With time ticking down and the Redblacks pinned deep in their own end, Henry Burris connected with Greg Ellingson for a 93-yard touchdown that sent Ottawa to the Grey Cup. If Ottawa is going to make it back to the championship, quarterback Trevor Harris must repeat his stellar regular-season play. He was the backup quarterback when the team won in 2016 behind Henry Burris. But it's Harris' team now and he has a massive opportunity on Sunday. For as poised and confident as Ottawa seems going into the East final, Hamilton has all sorts of swagger right now after a beatdown of the B.C. Lions at home in the East semifinal by 40 points. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli threw for three first-half touchdowns and helped his team cruise to the victory. He threw the second most yards of all quarterbacks during the season and was given the division's most outstanding player nod. This marks Hamilton's third appearance in the East final in the last six years — made even more remarkable considering the team was 0-8 to begin last season and have turned things around in a hurry with head coach June Jones at the helm. The Ticats are looking to get back to the Grey Cup for the first time since 2014 when the team thought it had beaten Calgary, only to have a late Brandon Banks punt return touchdown called back on a penalty. They also lost the championship game in 2013 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Calgary Stampeders have been in this exact same situation so many times before. In fact, the Stamps have hosted a home playoff game and made the West final seven consecutive years. They've been dominant. But then there's the Grey Cup. The past two seasons have ending in bitter disappointment. An overtime loss to Ottawa two years ago and a late interception against Toronto last year ended Grey Cup dreams for the Stampeders. Can this third time be the charm? The Stamps have to make it past Winnipeg first. There's no denying the capability of Bo Levi Mitchell. In a one-game showdown, there aren't many other quarterbacks in the league a coach would prefer to lead their team. Winter wonderland in Ottawa…. Snow falling in Calgary….

This is Canadian football, folks. #CFLPlayoffs https://t.co/4rmyl7oVYD —@Devin_Heroux Calgary wasn't great down the stretch, losing three of its last four games to end the season. But in its final game of the season and needing a win to secure a berth in the West Final against BC, the Stampeders were brilliant. Perhaps the mini slide to end the season was the wake-up call Calgary needed going into the biggest game of the year this Sunday. Meanwhile, Winnipeg is on a roll. The Bombers have won six out of their last seven games, including a tough playoff win on the road in Regina last Sunday. Andrew Harris ran wild and Matt Nichols avoided mistakes — a clean football game for a Winnipeg team playing its best football at exactly the right time. This is the first time the two teams will in the playoffs since the 2001 Grey Cup in Montreal — Calgary won that game 27-19. This marks Winnipeg's first West Final appearance since 2002 when they played the Edmonton Eskimos. The Bombers have a playoff road record of 22-32 all time. For the Bombers, this season is quickly becoming about snapping that nasty Grey Cup drought of 28 years. For the Stamps, this season is about salvaging a competitive window that's yet to yield the ultimate prize.
QB battle key in East
Pressure on Stamps
The Edmonton Eskimos downed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 33-30 on Thursday in the second-longest game in CFL history.
When the final gun sounded at 1:17 a.m. CT, Edmonton kicker Sean Whyte had given his team a three-point victory after lightning forced two weather delays in the action at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.
Kickoff was at 7:35 p.m. and the total of the two delays was two hours and 55 minutes. The total time of the game was five hours and 42 minutes.
Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly ran in a pair of one-yard touchdowns, including one with 1:22 left in the game. He then connected with Nate Behar on a two-point convert to tie it 30-30.
Whyte kicked a 44-yard winning field goal with eight seconds to go.
Bombers rookie quarterback Chris Streveler threw three touchdown passes in his pro debut.

So, true to his word, the Olympic bronze medallist is following his own heart by trading in his track spikes for football cleats in the prime of his career.
The 5-foot-7, 170-pound speedster worked out with the Calgary Stampeders in October as a receiver/kick returner. He hopes to attend a mini-camp with the Grey Cup finalists next March. Other Canadian Football League teams have also expressed interest.
His goal: to receive an invitation to a CFL training camp next June and, ultimately, earn a roster spot.
“I try not to say one thing and do another,” says Haynes, 25, who served as the lead-off runner for the Canadian 4×100 relay team that won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Games. “I think a lot of people are afraid to take that next step and afraid to go after what they truly want. They’re afraid of what might happen and the possibility that things can go wrong.
“But if you focus on all the things that can go wrong, you’re going to outthink yourself and talk yourself out of doing what you want to do.”
Playing professional football is something Haynes has wanted to do since graduating in 2010 from Calgary’s Crescent Heights High School, where he excelled at running back, kick returner and quarterback and was a reluctant superstar in track.
It was Haynes’s raw speed that earned him multiple track scholarship offers from Division I schools in the U.S. But undiagnosed learning disabilities meant he didn’t have the required marks for university.

With help from several teachers at Crescent Heights, Haynes got his grades up to the point he could attend Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas.
As it turns out, Barton didn’t have a football team. So Haynes parked his gridiron dreams to focus on track and academics.
He went on to graduate from the University of Alabama with a degree in general health.
On the track, he set a personal best of 10.15 seconds in the 100 metres in 2015.
“Obviously when it comes to moving forward north and south, there’s no doubt in my mind that I’d be the fastest player in the CFL,” he says. “If anyone wants to question that, we can set up a race.”
He is not bragging. In fact, Haynes is keenly aware that his football skills are unrefined. He know he lacks the college experience possessed by the vast majority of his counterparts.
But he believes in his abilities. He believes in his work ethic. And he has faith that he can play pro ball.
“People always talked about my elusiveness and quickness and ability to make something out of nothing,” he says. “I know what I can do. I’m confident in myself. And when the opportunity comes, I’ll make the most of it.”
Haynes is not ruling out competing for Canada in track at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. But he’ll never forgive himself if he doesn’t at least try to realize his potential in football.
Tackling adversity, to Haynes, is simply a way of life.
Haynes’s mom, Carlene Smith, worked multiple jobs to support the family after relocating to Canada from Jamaica. (Rachel Zelniker/CBC)
“I already couldn’t be more proud of Akeem,” says Ken Rose, who coached Haynes in track and football at Crescent Heights. “If he makes a CFL team, it will be just another incredible thing this young man has accomplished when he could have given up a long time ago.”
Indeed, Haynes never had it easy. At age seven, he moved with his mom, Carlene Smith, to Yellowknife from his native Jamaica. (He initially thought the snow was salt.)
When he was 10, the family settled in Calgary. Carlene held down multiple jobs — as a cleaner, hotel manager and receptionist — to make ends meet. At times, Carlene and her son slept on a mattress on the floor in the basement of a house crowded with other people.
“When I was younger, I woke up some mornings and we didn’t have heat,” he says. “I didn’t have shoes to play sports with. I wore the same shoes for football as I did to play basketball and in gym class.
“But people were very kind to me. A couple bought me a pair of football cleats, and it meant the world to me.”
Grateful for all the help he has received along the way, Haynes wrote a book called Love, Life & Legacy that centres on dealing with hardships. He followed that up with a second book entitled Faith, Fear & Fruition that talks about overcoming mental barriers.
He hopes his success story — in track and maybe even in football — will inspire others to go after what they really want.
“I’m just trying to touch as many people as I can in my own way,” he says. “I want to be something to the younger kids coming up.
“Given my upbringing, I want them to know that nothing is ever truly out of reach.”
The list of great CFL running backs over the years is a lengthy one but the game is changing quickly from a heavily focused ground attack to an aerial assault.
Normie Kwong. George Reed. Mike Pringle. Jon Corish. All great runners of the past, but times have changed.
Steve Daniel has been the head CFL statistician since 2007. He tracks general numbers to the most obscure ones through every 60 minutes of football during the season. And Daniel is fascinated by the trends he’s seeing in the game this year, especially when it comes to the changing offence.
“The rushing carries per game is the lowest it has ever been in our history and by quite a large margin,” he says.
“In the last four years it’s absolutely plummeted and I don’t think that trend is going to stop.”
There’s only been one other time in CFL history where offences have been this heavily tilted toward the passing attack. That came during the early 90s when quarterbacks Kent Austin and Doug Fluti e were whipping the football around the gridiron. It’s back to pace in the 2017.
“The raw number of pass attempts right now is around 75 per cent per game. That is the highest since what used to be referred to as basketball on grass with Flutie and Austin. Basically all of our passing records date back to that time for yardage.”
But those numbers are being rivaled this year in a big way. Daniel attributes the shifting CFL game to the high quality quarterbacks in the league right now. He says coaches are realizing they can be much more effective throwing short, high percentage passes to gain yards rather than rushing.
“This is the CFL model based in the era that we’re in. Right now we have a selection of quarterbacks, Trevor Harris, Ricky Ray, Bo Levi Mitchell, Kevin Glenn, there are so many of them in the top 40 of all-time and they’re all playing right now.”
Daniel says CFL teams had to find a way to be more productive on offence following the 2014 season, during what he calls the year of the defence. Scoring that year was at its lowest in more than 30 years, with teams averaging a combined score of 45.48 points per game. The combined score average has climbed every season since then. The 2014 season force coaching staffs to adapt and change quickly. That meant abandoning the run and using running backs in a completely different way.
“Our coaches are enormously resilient and resourceful and have reacted to that by changing their strategy.”
While the rushing attacks have been thwarting overall, one team is seeing great success on the ground.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Andrew Harris is on pace to become the first-ever player in the CFL to have 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in one season.

Daniel says the way the Bombers have incorporated him into their offence is what’s allowed the team to be successful this season with and plays a big role in the 7-2 record.
“Basically they prefer to throw the ball in a bit of open space to him,” Daniel says. “If you look at Andrew Harris, we’re reverting to Robert Drummond. He’s the guy that came closest to 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 receiving in the same year.”
Through nine games this season Harris has 570 yards rushing and 490 yards receiving.
“They’re averaging 109 yards per game,” Daniel says. “They lead the league in that category. “
While the rushing numbers are the lowest they’ve ever been in league history, scoring is approaching the highest it’s ever been. Daniel says since that low scoring 2014 season, coaches have found ways to change the offence to be more effective and now that work is paying dividends and fans like it.
“In my opinion, I believe they’re happy with the quality of the game right now,” he said.
“There’s parity. Offence is up. Points are up. It’s a really good thing for us. Hopefully those trends continue.”
Daniel says historically as the weather starts to drop and the elements play more of a factor in games, teams have implemented the run game into their offences a little more. However, he believes that might not be the case this year.
“I think teams have found a strategy that works. And climate change works its way into this too. It’s easier to make a first down when it’s a nice day then when it’s snowing.”
If there are two stats Daniel says fans should keep their eyes on to predict winners and losers for the rest of the season, it’s the turnover ratio and second down conversion.
“Those are really two of the most important numbers,” he says. “Numbers aren’t everything but they do tell a story. I’ve confronted coaches who have confronted me. If you provide them with those numbers, it’s surprising how much they use them.”
Chrupalo has been a referee in the CFL for the past 13 seasons. He’s also been a Winnipeg police officer in the neighbourhood he grew up in for the past 24 years.
“There are rules for both. That’s the important part for me. And there are consequences on the streets and on the field,” Chrupalo said. “I watch them and monitor situations and if there’s someone operating outside of those rules I have to call a foul.”
Chrupalo sees his policing work on the streets as bridging the gap between police and people. Now he’s bridging the gap between the CFL and NFL after it was recently announced he will be part of the NFL exchange program.
“It’s quite an honour to be selected by the CFL and to go and represent the rest of the officials is quite an accomplishment I think,” he said.
This is just the second year for the program, which has six CFL officials heading south to officiate an NFL pre-season game in August. Chrupalo just got back from a training camp in Green Bay.
Chrupalo has officiated three Grey Cup championships including last year’s game in Toronto.
Chrupalo said there’s a sign at the beginning of the neighbourhood that welcomes people travelling across a bridge from downtown into north Winnipeg.
“It’s been there for ever and it’s a bit of a welcome to the north end,” he said.
Chrupalo has seen that sign since he was kid. It’s where he grew up.
“I grew up in Manitoba housing. There are some socio-economic problems that come up in that area,” Chrupalo said.
Despite some of the challenges facing the community, there’s no other place Chrupalo would have wanted to have grown up and now police, pointing directly to its diverse range of people to being as its strength.
“You can live on the same street with somebody who owns several businesses and very successful or you can have someone who lives in Manitoba housing. There’s a lot variety and a lot of great people,” he said.
Chrupalo credits two factors that have contributed to success throughout his childhood: His mom, and sports.
“I was very fortunate to have my mom. She was a stay at home mom and my dad worked all the time. It was busy. I was an active kid.”
Chrupalo has spent his entire life in north Winnipeg and so when it comes to policing the streets, he comes across many familiar faces.
“I grew up in that area and come into contact with people I grew up with, people that I have coached and people that I’ve refereed,” he said.
“They’ll come up and talk to me because they knew me before I was police officer.”
Chrupalo, left, is recognizable face in the community he serves. Brian Chrupal (Brian Chrupalo)
Those relationships are important to Chrupalo because he understands that in some cases the perception people have of police can be a negative one and he wants to change that.
“They’ll see me in a police car and come up to me and talk about things. Or people will be walking down the street and recognize me from football and it’s a good opportunity to not just have a police contact but have somebody talk to,” Chrupalo said.
He also uses his position as police officer to give back, making sure less fortunate families have presents at Christmas, candy at Halloween, or in one particular case raise funds to purchase a bike for an 11-year-old boy who was robbed.
Chrupalo is relentless in his investing back into community.
“I donate as much as I can to give back to improve people’s day.”
Chrupalo says at times it can be difficult being an officer the neighbourhood he knows so well. But despite having grown up and having spent a lot of time with many of the people he’ll come into contact with, he’s been able to maintain healthy boundaries around those relationships.
“As a police officer there are rules and regulations but at the same time you can have a personality and do your job,” said Chrupalo.
Whether on the streets or on the football field, Chrupalo wants to be someone who is considered fair.
“I have a little bit of discretion, for example, when I see someone drinking on the street I ask them to pour it out. If I can’t drink on the street, you can’t drink on the street. And I tell them to please pour out their alcohol, that I’m going to leave and come back and if they’re still there I’ll give them a ticket.”
Chrupalo said it comes down to presenting people with choices as opposed to being the law.
“I don’t think people appreciate that as much. I think it’s important that people have the ability to talk about things.”
Chrupalo said he didn’t know it at the time, but when he looks back on his childhood he realizes it was sport that kept him focused on achieving goals.
“It kept me busy and it kept me out of trouble.”
Chrupalo played rugby and football throughout high school and when he’s policing the streets he tries to be that positive role model for young kids, the same way people were for him.
“Maybe I took it for granted. People ask me about role models and teachers and coaches were mine. They gave their time and gave back to the community. They kept kids from getting into trouble.”
He’s also extremely proud of his Metis heritage.
“I’ve always had opportunities so I don’t consider being a Metis man a challenge, in fact the service embraces it.”
