The organic certification of hemp has been a confusing and sometimes controversial topic. Certification of hemp is relatively new in the United States and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has changed their stance on hemp certification many times. The ambiguity of organic hemp has perplexed both hemp farmers and consumers for the past few years. 

As a consumer of hemp-derived CBD, you may be wondering: should hemp be certified organic? Let’s discuss the timeline of hemp certification and the controversy surrounding organic hemp. 

 

Can Hemp be Certified Organic?

Under the 2014 Farm Bill, institutions of higher education and state departments of agriculture are authorized to establish industrial hemp research pilot programs in states where the production of industrial hemp is legal.  The Farm Bill allowed for these pilot programs to exist but did not provide implementation details for agencies such as the USDA. This gave agencies like the USDA room for interpretation.

This may be cleared up by the 2018 Farm Bill, but that is currently unclear.

At first, a directive from the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) staff allowed hemp to be certified organic by third-party agents. Once a third-party agent is accredited, it has the authority to approve or deny applications for organic certification. 

Then, in February 2016, the USDA reversed their decision. At the time, a handful of hemp farms had secured or were in the process of securing, certifications from accredited third-parties. 

 

“Organic certification of industrial hemp production at this time is premature and could be misleading to certified organic operations,” read a USDA statement. “The legality of the various uses of this product has not yet been determined. Until USDA guidance regarding industrial hemp production under the Farm Bill is completed, NOP-accredited certifying agents may not certify the domestic production of industrial hemp.” 

 

New Rules

This change left farms that secured the certification in a state of uncertainty. It also delegitimatized the legality of hemp, which goes against the 2014 Farm Bill. 

To clarify their stance, the USDA, along with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), released a Statement of Principles on Industrial Hemp in August 2016. Under this statement, industrial hemp produced in the United States may be certified as organic if produced in accordance with USDA organic regulations.

Confusing, right?

It appears the Statement of Principles currently allows the certification of organic hemp. However, organic hemp certification is a bit more complicated than it appears on paper. There is also a possible bias as it is not clear if the USDA is adhering to the 2014 Farm Bill or is influenced by the DEA, which tries to regulate some constituents of industrial hemp as it does marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). 

Additionally, the barriers surrounding organic certification are high. With USDA organic certification for industrial hemp, there are opportunities, challenges, and rigorous requirements. It can take years for a farm to receive organic certification and costs to go through the certification process range in the thousands. 

 

So, Should Hemp be Organic?

At this time, not necessarily. An organic certification is not the only indication of quality grown hemp products.

We know it is possible for hemp to be grown at a high standard without having an organic certification because European farms have been growing high-quality hemp for many years without such. Hemp farmers without organic certification can still grow under high standards and without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals.

When researching the quality of a hemp product, it is most important to inquire about farming practices and extraction methods. In the future, hemp certification may be a major indicator of quality, but for now, we should focus on other indicators of quality. A certificate of analysis (COA), which confirms the cannabinoid levels of a CBD product, is an accessible way for consumers to confirm a product’s label is accurate. 

 

What the Future Holds

It is our hope that the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, which includes the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, will clarify any legal “grey area” surrounding hemp. With the passing of this bill, agencies like the USDA and DEA will have no room for interpretation of the law. If passed, the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 will clarify the absolute legality of hemp.

Canada's top rugby sevens players have applied for union certification, turning up their dispute with Rugby Canada another notch.

The B.C. Labour Relations Board has scheduled a meeting for Friday on the players' request to join the United Steelworkers of America.

Thirteen members of the Canadian sevens squad have boycotted training sessions in Langford, B.C., refusing to sign Rugby Canada's contract offer.

In a bid to maximize its resources, Rugby Canada has opted for one centralized player pool rather than have the 15s and sevens teams practise separately. The sport's governing body is also looking to spread its financial resources, with some sevens players taking a cut so others can have their funding improved.

Co-captains Nate Hirayama and Harry Jones, via social media, have complained that sevens deserves more respect.

"It's 2018. 7s is no longer just a development tool. We have to get with the times or we're going to get left behind," Hirayama tweeted above a picture of the Canadian team celebrating its victory at the 2017 Singapore Sevens.

Jones's tweet contained another photo of Singapore celebrations that showed the players hoisting coach Damian McGrath in the air.

"These players and staff have dedicated their lives and careers for moments like these. All we want is to keep chasing our dreams," Jones said.

A lawyer representing the boycotting sevens players says six of them have volunteered to help the 15s squad in its World Cup qualifying bid "provided the men's 7s players are treated fairly."

Rugby Canada had turned down the offer, he added.

The Canadians 15s side is currently ranked 23rd in the world and faces a last-chance World Cup qualifying tournament in November. Canada's sevens squad, which finished ninth on the World Series circuit last season, begins play in Dubai in late November.

Rugby Canada CEO Allen Vansen has said the organization supports the players' bid for representation.

A complaint filed on behalf of the Roy Moore campaign alleges that “election fraud” contributed to Moore’s loss in the US Senate race in Alabama. A statement posted on the Moore campaign’s Facebook page late Wednesday night called on the Alabama secretary of state to delay certification of the election results until the claim can be investigated.

Moore lost the December 12 election to his opponent, Doug Jones, by more than 20,000 votes. He has so far refused to concede. Alabama officials are scheduled to certify the election results on Thursday.

Moore’s statement alleges that “election integrity experts” concluded “with a reasonable degree of statistical and mathematical certainty” that some level of fraud contributed to his defeat.

The Alabama Senate election ended on the heels of a long-playing scandal in which multiple women accused Moore of various levels of sexual misconduct; behavior they said occurred when he was in his 30s and they were as young as 14 years old.

Moore had offered conflicting statements about his accusers — at points acknowledging that he had known some of the women, and then later saying he did not.

Jones, a career prosecutor once considered a long shot candidate in deep-red Alabama, raised over $ 10 million in the final weeks of a race that remained close, despite the firestorm surrounding Moore.

Additionally, Democratic coalitions invested considerable resources to mobilize the state’s African-American voters and suburban white voters with whom Moore had fallen out of favor amid the sexual misconduct scandal. Once the election results are certified, Jones will become the first Democrat in more than two decades to hold a US Senate seat in the state.

Google has announced a new “Street View ready” certification standard as it looks to encourage Joe Public to contribute to the company’s gargantuan database of real-world imagery.

The certification will be meted out to 20 new 360-degree cameras that are scheduled to hit the market in 2017. These include offerings from companies such as Samsung, GoPro, Matterport, Sphericam, and Giroptic. By applying a badge of approval to the devices the internet giant hopes to encourage both amateur and professional photographers to participate in its massive crowdsourced image collection program.

Google’s Street View cars, replete with roof-mounted 360-degree camera, have become famous sights in cities around the world, capturing everything from shop facades and monuments to parks and other public attractions. The program has long transcended its roots on the roads, however, and Google has found itself traversing the Amazon rainforest on a zipline and swimming underwater at the Great Barrier Reef, while machine learning also now enables Street View to automatically extract street names, numbers, and businesses to keep Maps up-to-date.

Google’s ultimate aim with Street View is to capture photos from everywhere on Earth, inside or outside, underwater or high on a mountain. And this is why it needs an army of people on the ground updating its database with immersive images from every corner of the globe. “You can walk, run, bike, drive — even ride a horse — while we do the heavy lifting of connecting each frame of your video into a traditional, interactive Street View experience,” explained Google Street View product manager Charles Armstrong.

Each camera that attains the coveted “Street View ready” badge will meet one of Google’s four new standards, details of which can be found here, and which in summary are:

  • Street View mobile ready: 360 cameras that can publish Street View directly from a mobile app
  • Street View auto ready: 360 cameras built for vehicle-based collection with the highest accuracy
  • Street View VR ready: 360 cameras or systems that collect geometry in addition to generating sets of connected 360 photos
  • Street View workflow ready: Publishing tools (sometimes bundled with cameras) that can upload to Street View accounts

So, in addition to physical cameras, companies will be developing desktop software designed with Street View publication in mind.

Google has for some time offered a Street View trusted photographer program through which photographers must publish fifty “approved” 360-degree photos in order to market themselves as “Google Street View trusted.” Many businesses want professional imagery captured for inclusion on Street View and Google Maps, and it is a potentially lucrative industry for creatives.

The Book One is an expensive detachable in the same vein as today’s Surface Book , and it was just submitted to the Federal Communications Commission for certification, as Liliputing reports.

The Porsche Design machine is notable for a few reasons. First, it offers a unique hinge design that allows its display to not only detach in a similar fashion to the Surface Book, but also to flip around like 360-degree convertible 2-in-1s. That design offers the best of both worlds — a thin-and-light tablet along with the convenience of simply being able to rotate the screen into tablet mode.

Second, the Book One is a very expensive machine, with a $ 2,495 price tag for its standard configuration that includes a Core i7-7500U CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB PCIe SSD. That makes it nearly as expensive as the equivalent Surface Book with Performance Base, which is itself the most expensive Windows 10 2-in-1 on the market.

As Liliputing points out, the FCC documentation offers up a few tantalizing details. For example, while the Book One specs clarify that the tablet portion has a 3,235mAh 7.6v battery, for 25 watt-hours, while the keyboard dock has a 2,945mAh 15.4v battery, for 45 watt-hours. A total of 70 watt-hours should give the Book One battery life that falls between the original Surface Book and the Performance Base version.

In addition, the Book One is being manufactured by Quanta, a Taiwanese manufacturer. While none of that is particularly surprising or intriguing information, the very fact that it received FCC certification means that the machine would appear to be on track for its April release. If the recent Surface Book rumors hold true, that’s when we’ll find out about its major competitor, the alleged Surface Book 2.

Microsoft has announced that it’s expanding its HoloLens Agency Readiness Partner program to Europe, almost a year after it first opened to creative agencies in North America.

Though HoloLens is capable of some truly awesome and mindblowing things, a major hurdle for any company dedicating resources to the fledgling augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) industries is getting companies to harness the capabilities, and understand how it can help business for them.

Companies with the in-house expertise are free to build apps for HoloLens through Microsoft’s software development kit (SDK), but often companies will have to rely on outside help to bring a so-called “mixed reality” app to market — and this is why Microsoft is looking to certify agencies as being ready and able.

Now, Microsoft has rubberstamped six agencies from Europe, each of which has gone through “extensive, hands-on training” with the Microsoft HoloLens team, according to Lorraine Bardeen, general manager for Microsoft’s HoloLens and Windows Experiences team. They are: Black Marble, Rewind, and Fundamental VR (U.K.); Holoforge and Immersion (France); and Zuhlke (Germany). This takes the total number of HoloLens Agency Readiness Partners to 16, following the 10 that were previously announced in the U.S. and Canada.

“Working with one of our hand-selected HoloLens Agency Readiness Partners is one of the quickest ways to get started with creating mixed reality applications that can transform working with 3D data, bringing new products and information to life, and creating new opportunities for business growth.

Microsoft’s mixed reality headset first started shipping to developers in the U.S. last March, and the company has been opening things up to developers and clients in more markets over the past few months, including Europe and Australasia. So it’s not entirely surprising to see the agency partner program arrive in more markets too.
