Harry Styles is arguably one of the most famous people in the world right now. Aside from dropping one of the best-selling albums of the year, the former One Direction member is getting himself back on the silver screen in a big way. Not only is he starring in Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry, Darling” (which has certainly generated its fair share of conversation in recent weeks), but he is also front-and-center in “My Policeman.”

Prime Video’s adaptation of the book of the same name by Bethan Roberts is headed to theaters next month. And now, we’ve got a new trailer for the film, which sees Styles at the center of a forbidden love triangle in the ’50s. One expects this will get people talking as well. Let’s take a look, shall we?

My Policeman Trailer Has Harry Styles And Taboo Love

Much to discuss there. The bulk of the film (or at least the trailer) takes place in the ’50s when it was far less acceptable to be gay, or really anything other than straight. So when Tom (Styles) marries Marion (Emma Corrin), only to have a fling with Patrick (David Dawson) on the side, things get heated. One could argue in more ways than one. The relationships endure through tension and the big hook here is that we will eventually flash forward decades to catch up with the trio in the ’90s. As for the specifics of the story? The synopsis reads as follows:

A beautifully crafted story of forbidden love and changing social conventions, My Policeman follows three young people—policeman Tom (Harry Styles), teacher Marion (Emma Corrin), and museum curator Patrick (David Dawson)—as they embark on an emotional journey in 1950s Britain. Flashing forward to the 1990s, Tom (Linus Roache), Marion (Gina McKee), and Patrick (Rupert Everett) are still reeling with longing and regret, but now they have one last chance to repair the damage of the past.

Michael Grandage (“Genius”) is in the director’s chair, with Ron Nyswaner (“Philadelphia”) penning the adaptation of Roberts’ novel. Producers include Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robbie Rogers, Cora Palfrey, and Philip Herd, with Michael Grandage, Michael Riley McGrath, and Caroline Levy serving as executive producers. Berlanti, the chief architect behind the Arrowverse on The CW, amazingly does find time to work on movies aside from the army of shows he has on the air. A busy man whose name is, more often than not, a good omen.

“My Policeman” arrives in select theaters on October 21, 2022, before hitting Prime Video on November 4.

RELATED STORIES

Recently, a friend asked me what Tiny Pretty Things — the new series I’ve been mainlining for reasons we’ll get into in a moment — was all about.

“Ballet, bitches and butts,” I said, with zero shame. (Note to Netflix, which streams the show: Feel free to use that as a blurb!)

My friend knew to ask because she’d noticed that the new drama is set at a dance school, and she’s aware that I have a… let’s call it a totally-not-troubling! need to ingest pop culture dance content.

Have I ever taken more than a handful of the most rudimentary ballet lessons? Nope! Can I stand in first position for more than 30 seconds without my legs starting to tremble like a bowl of Jell-O atop an imbalanced washing machine? Not a chance! Am I perhaps, at this very moment, wearing these comfy, warm-up booties because New York City principal dancer Sara Mearns sports them on Instagram? Maybe!

The cycle repeats every few years: A ballet-centric movie or TV show will come out, and no matter whether it’s award-winning artistry or total trash, I’m soon revisiting my dreams of gliding across a stage on pointe. The 2000 film Center Stage shines like a Swarovski-studded tutu as the epitome of my dance delusion, but there are so many others pirouetting in its wake.

The movie Black Swan introduced me to the beauty that is Rodarte’s awesome open-knit arm warmers and the horror that is watching Natalie Portman stay perfectly in character while a physical therapist manually cajoles her actually dislocated rib back into place. Starz’s Flesh & Bone series — which really, really wasn’t what its trailer made it seem — at least had footage of grueling company classes and Ben Daniels screaming a lot.

The CW reality show Breaking Pointe, the Step Up movies, Robert Altman’s The Company, Disney+’s On Pointe — sign me up for all of it. When and/or if the Center Stage TV show ever comes to fruition, you’d better I’ll have massive riding-my-motorcycle-onto-a-Lincoln-Center-stage energy about that one, too.

tiny-pretty-things-netflix-commentary-dance-tv-showsBut back to Tiny Pretty Things: It’s scratching my ballet itch these days for two reasons. Just like many of the titles I just listed, A) The dancing is gorgeous. B) Pretty much everything else is a mess.

I say this with love! Imagine if you took the pilots for a murder mystery, a high school drama and a haves-vs-the-have-nots primetime soap, then you put ’em in a blender and gave the resulting mishmash a Freeform budget. Throw in some bloody feet, a lot of bare booty and sprinkle the conglomeration with words like developee and chassé, and you’re getting a sense of what I legitimately enjoy about this legitimately not-great series.

And wait — I haven’t even told you the plot yet. We enter the world of Chicago’s Archer School of Ballet via Neveah Stroyer, who wins a spot at the coveted academy after another student — Cassie Shore — falls from the rooftop and winds up in a coma. Was Cassie pushed? And if so, who did it?

Given the roster of her jealous, two-faced classmates, it could be anyone. Her roommate June? Her possibly psycho boyfriend Nabil? Her biggest competitor Bette? Or was it Ramon Costa, the bad boy (yet make no mistake, full-on adult) choreographer who was probably sleeping with Cassie and definitely keeps getting anonymous texts threatening to expose him for… something? Or school director Monique “Call Me Madame” DuBois (played by Lauren Holly), who’s shtupping one of her students?

tiny-pretty-things-netflix-commentary-dance-tv-showsOK, put that aside for a moment, because we haven’t even gotten to the dorm-room sex triangle involving Bette, her boyfriend Oren and his gay roommate Shane. Or the fact that Bette’s nascent dance career is being held together by Vicodin and lies, thanks to the injuries she’s hiding from the school’s staff. Or that Ramon thinks, at this school at this time, the best fodder for a commissioned ballet is Ripper, a balletic retelling of Jack the Ripper’s greatest hits.

Please understand that everything I just listed is about half of what’s going on, plot-wise, in Tiny Pretty Things‘ first season. And it’s tough to keep track of who’s feeling which way about whom — much less who’s likely to have attempted to kill Cassie — because the relationships among the students shift from friends to frenemies to outright foes and back with startling speed. BUT THOSE TUTUS, THO.

Toward the end of Episode 4, Ramon angrily addresses his students at the start of a rehearsal, calling them, “just a company of dancers, facing their own, immeasurable darkness” — a summation so unaware of its grandiosity that it could double as a tagline for the series. And who’d ever want to watch 10 episodes of that?

Uh, me. Totally me. So. Much. Me. And if you feel the same, grab your warm-up booties and meet me on the couch in 5,6,7 8!

Yvonne Strahovski escapes one kind of hell only to land in another, in Netflix’s trailer for the Australian limited series Stateless.

Inspired by a true story and premiering Stateside on Netflix on Wednesday, July 8, the six-part series promises “a powerful and timely tale” of four strangers whose lives collide at an immigration detention center in the middle of the Australian desert.

There’s Sofie (played by The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Strahovski), an airline hostess who is on the run from a dangerous cult (led by The Affair‘s Dominic West and series co-creator Cate Blanchett); Ameer (The Commons‘ Fayssal Bazzi), an Afghan refugee who with his family is attempting to flee persecution; Cam (Suicide Squad’s Jai Courtney), a young father struggling with his role as a detention center guard; and Clare (Offspring’s Asher Keddie), a bureaucrat running out of time to contain a national scandal.

“Stateless has been a labour of love for many years and we could not be more thrilled that it will reach an international audience via Netflix,” Blanchett and fellow co-creators Tony Ayres and Elise McCredie said in a statement. “The issues addressed in the series have universal resonance but have been cloaked in silence and muddied by fear and misinformation. Our hope is that Stateless will generate a global conversation around our systems of border protection and how our humanity has been affected by them.”

Stateless previously premiered on Australia’s ABC in March.

Copa Libertadores: Football finally takes center stage as Boca & River prepare to meet in Madrid https://briefnews.eu/copa-libertadores-football-finally-takes-center-stage-as-boca-river-prepare-to-meet-in-madrid/ https://briefnews.eu/copa-libertadores-football-finally-takes-center-stage-as-boca-river-prepare-to-meet-in-madrid/#respond Sat, 08 Dec 2018 15:50:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/copa-libertadores-football-finally-takes-center-stage-as-boca-river-prepare-to-meet-in-madrid/

The 2018 Copa Libertadores will reach a conclusion on Sunday when River Plate and Boca Juniors meet in Madrid, capping one of the most acrimonious and farcical sagas in the history of football.

When the bitter Buenos Aires rivals advanced to the final of South America’s biggest club competition, setting up a first-ever Superclasico showdown at this stage in the competition’s history, fireworks were expected.

But few would have predicted it would be so explosive as to force the concluding leg of the tie to be played out 6,000 miles away from Buenos Aires, across the Atlantic in Madrid.

How we reached this point has already filled thousands upon thousands of column inches around the world.

Following the thrilling 2-2 draw in the first leg at Boca Junior’s La Bombonera stadium on November 11, the denouement was perfectly set for the return fixture at River Plate’s El Monumental home two weeks later.

That game never happened, after shocking scenes that saw River fans attack the bus carrying Boca players to the stadium, injuring several of them while leaving others exposed to police tear gas fired to disperse the baying crowds.

Amid a maelstrom of indecision, anger and farce, the game was first delayed and then postponed, before eventually being moved to a different continent by the South American football confederation, CONMEBOL.

It will now take place at Real Madrid’s iconic 80,000-seater Estadio Santiago Bernabeu home, which under any other circumstances would be a fine and fitting venue for one of football’s grandest occasions.

But while Boca Juniors and River Plate are both now in Madrid preparing for the game – followed by thousands of their endlessly loyal fans – neither team wants to be there.

Indeed, the contentious step to relocate the game has at least united them in one thing: opposition to CONMEBOL’s decision.

Boca officials have demanded that they be crowned champions automatically and that River be disqualified, an appeal which was rejected by CONMEBOL and later the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

River, meanwhile, have lamented the loss of home advantage, even if brought about by the hardcore element of the club’s own fans.

The blame game has reached far and wide – from the mayor of Buenos Aires accusing “mafia” elements of the River fan base from being behind the initial bus attack, to former Argentina and Boca legend Diego Maradona directly blaming the country’s president.

Meanwhile, one thing lost in the fog of tear gas and endless stream of invective is that a football game could finally, exhaustingly break out on Sunday.

And judging by the first leg, it could even be one worthy of the long and storied history of the competition it is played in.

That game back on November 11 saw Boca twice take the lead, only to be pegged back both times by a gutsy River team in an intense encounter that flowed from end to end.

When the two teams meet again on Sunday – almost a month later – we will finally see some football again.

Match details:

What time is the game?

The game kicks off at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium on Sunday, December 9, at 19:30 GMT.

Ticketing

Fans from both clubs will be at the 80,000-seater Bernabeu, with 25,000 tickets allocated to each team, but only 5,000 on sale in Argentina.

Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi will also be in attendance as a special guest, although Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly declined an invitation.

Team news

For River Plate, striker Rafael Santos Borre is suspended and veteran forward Nacho Scocco is likely to miss out through a calf injury again, meaning Lucas Pratto will lead the line up front.

However, Marcelo Gallardo will have the boost of skipper Leonardo Ponzio returning to the base of midfield after recovering from the thigh strain that kept him out of the first leg.

For Boca, key winger Cristian Pavon, an Argentina international, will reportedly be fit to start after recovering from the muscle injury which forced him off in tears during the first leg.

Pablo Perez was a worry after suffering an eye injury in the bus attack that caused the postponement of the second leg, but is expected to be fit to start on Sunday on the left of midfield.

First-choice keeper Esteban Andrada is tipped to come in for Agustin Rossi after regaining fitness.

Head to head

The pair have met more than 200 times down the years in the Superclasico, with Boca ahead in the overall standings on 88 wins and River on 81.

Boca will be aiming for a lucky seventh Copa Libertadores title to put them level with fellow Argentine club Independiente on the all-time list, while River are out for a fourth title in all and first since 2015.

Scientists find evidence of a black hole at our galaxy’s center https://briefnews.eu/scientists-find-evidence-of-a-black-hole-at-our-galaxys-center/ https://briefnews.eu/scientists-find-evidence-of-a-black-hole-at-our-galaxys-center/#respond Fri, 02 Nov 2018 18:13:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scientists-find-evidence-of-a-black-hole-at-our-galaxys-center/

Researchers have long suspected that a supermassive black hole lies in the center of our galaxy, and now they have strong evidence to support that suspicion. Using the Very Large Telescope — an array of four individual telescopes stationed in the Atacama Desert in Chile — scientists have been observing Sagittarius A* (pronounced Sagittarius A-star), an object in the center of the Milky Way galaxy thought to be a supermassive black hole. During their work, the research team observed three bright flares orbiting around Sagittarius A*, which completed 150-million-mile circuits in just 45 minutes. That’s about 30 percent the speed of light.

Scientists say an object that massive — over four million times the mass of our Sun — that fits within such a small orbit is almost certainly a black hole. “This always was one of our dream projects but we did not dare to hope that it would become possible so soon.” Reinhard Genzel, the researcher who led the study, said in a statement. “The result is a resounding confirmation of the massive black hole paradigm.” Scientist Oliver Pfuhl added, “It’s mind-boggling to actually witness material orbiting a massive black hole at 30 percent of the speed of light. GRAVITY’s tremendous sensitivity has allowed us to observe the accretion processes in real time in unprecedented detail.”

GRAVITY is an instrument that combines the light from the VLT’s four telescopes, allowing researchers to study distant objects, like galactic centers, that are too faint when observed with other instruments.

The bright flares seen orbiting Sagittarius A* are thought to be a result of magnetic interactions in the hot gas around the black hole. Further, they behaved as hot spots orbiting a black hole of this size were predicted to. Earlier this year, astronomers observing a star called S2 that orbits Sagittarius A* every 16 years found that the supermassive object stretched the star’s light at its closest point of orbit, just as Einstein predicted would happen in his theory of general relativity.

“We were closely monitoring S2, and of course we always keep an eye on Sagittarius A*,” said Pfuhl. “During our observations, we were lucky enough to notice three bright flares from around the black hole — it was a lucky coincidence!” The findings were published in Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Exclusive ‘The Dead Center’ Clip Shane Carruth Brings Someone Back from the Dead https://briefnews.eu/exclusive-the-dead-center-clip-shane-carruth-brings-someone-back-from-the-dead/ https://briefnews.eu/exclusive-the-dead-center-clip-shane-carruth-brings-someone-back-from-the-dead/#respond Fri, 21 Sep 2018 16:52:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/exclusive-the-dead-center-clip-shane-carruth-brings-someone-back-from-the-dead/ the dead center clip

The Dead Center is a horror film starring none other than Shane Carruth, of Primer and Upstream Color acclaim. Carruth plays a doctor in a psychiatric ward treating a mysterious patient who woke up in a body bag in a morgue. Just what is going on here? Whatever it is…it’s creepy. We have an exclusive The Dead Center clip below, full of foreboding atmosphere and a story about resurrection.

The Dead Center Clip

Shane Carruth hasn’t helmed a feature film since 2013’s mind-bending Upstream Color, but he’s kept acting in short films, TV shows and more since then. Now he appears in and produces The Dead Center, from director Billy Senese. In The Dead Center, Carruth plays a doctor who teams with a medical examiner to look into the strange case of a John Doe who woke up in a morgue. In the clip above, the John Doe spins a tale about dying, and coming back again…and not for the first time.

This clip is suitably creepy and unsettling, and has piqued my interest for sure. As has the trailer, which you can see below.

The Dead Center Trailer

And here’s a slightly different trailer.

The Dead Center Trailer 2

The film, which also stars Poorna Jagannathan, Jeremy Childs, and Bill Feehely, will have its premiere screening at the 2018 LA Film Festival on September 21, 2018.

When a mysterious “John Doe” wakes up in a morgue and wanders into a psychiatric ward, a devoted doctor and curious medical examiner must slowly uncover dark and sinister secrets about the man that reveal a more horrifying truth than they could have ever imagined.
