While world leaders marked the centenary of the end of WWI, the gravity of the occasion proved too much for some, as the king of Morocco was filmed dozing off during the ceremony, seemingly irking the US president in the process.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco fell asleep during French President Emmanuel Macron’s Armistice Day speech in Paris. The king was seated directly beside US First Lady Melania Trump, who maintained her poise and ignored the regent’s wheezing, which is more than can be said for her husband US President Donald Trump, who can be seen glaring at the Moroccan monarch.

Macron’s apparently soporific speech was seen by many as a direct, verbal swipe at his US counterpart as he used the monologue to decry nationalism. Trump had been seated between Macron and the Moroccan king at a working lunch at the Elysee Palace earlier in the day.

“Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism,” the French leader said.

Trump was visibly nonplussed, offering only muted applause, though this paled in comparison to the Moroccan king’s drowsy disdain for the proceedings.

However, Trump did not appear to have his translation earpiece in during Macron’s remarks, so was most likely completely unaware of what was being said; though he was at least slightly more aware of his surroundings than the snoozing Moroccan sovereign.

The competition was seen as an ideal way to mark the centenary of the RAF, which was formed on April 1, 1918, while the First World War was still raging.

Among the vast portfolio of dramatic images is a spectacular selfie by RAF photographer Corporal Tim Laurence in a Hawk T2 as he banked, wing tip pointing towards the sea off Anglesey, North Wales, while colleagues fly in close formation.

Cpl Laurence also captured a Typhoon fighter performing a tactic beloved of pilots in combat missions – an image of the jet roaring out of the sun.

The jet, flown by Flt Lt Jim Peterson, is part of the Typhoon Display Team and had the honour of closing the 2018 RAF Cosford Air Show in June. The entries also honoured airmen from the Second World War.

A Hurricane was pictured by Cpl Laurence flying alongside a 1970s Polish Air Force MiG-29 Fulcrum at Cosford, Shropshire.

The link-up between the Hurricane and the MiG-29 was designed as a tribute to the Polish squadrons who fought alongside the RAF in the Second World War.

Precision flying was the focus of Sergeant Paul Oldfield, whose image of two Typhoon FGR4 aircraft from the Typhoon Display Team showed them performing a dynamic crossover at supersonic speed over Cosford.

The competition, judged by a team including press photographers Edmond Terakopian, James Vellacott and Jim Hedge, also recognised the unsung work of support teams on the ground.

With an inferno raging behind and clad in protective helmet and clothing, it is impossible to tell that the subject in one entry, Corporal Emma Pook, is a female firefighter – one of only two at RAF Benson.

She posed for Sergeant Rachel Malthouse during training to prepare the crews for any eventuality.

Senior Aircraftman Ed Wright captured the calm before frenzied activity in the back of a Chinook as the crew prepared to load troops taking part in an Anglo-French exercise in Lorient, Brittany.

But there was also no neglecting current operations for the Royal Air Force.

Flying high over Kabul, a Puma transport helicopter unleashed flares as it flew in support of Operation Toral, part of Britain’s continuing support for the Afghanistan government.

The picture, by Corporal Lee Matthews, is a clear reminder that 100 years after its formation, the RAF is still heavily involved in frontline operations.

Judge James Vellacott said: “The standards are super high. Some real skill has gone into these images, as I know you only get that one shot sometimes to get it right.”

Fellow judge Edmond Terakopian said: “We’ve been judging for an entire day but it’s gone in the blink of an eye because the pictures have been so great.”

And Jim Hedge added: “I thought the standard overall was very high. “Some areas really glowed.

“And the stuff that makes the best photos is the stuff that the RAF does day in day out.”

THE RAF Photographic Competition drew a treasure trove of pictures from around the world.

The entrants were asked to submit images which would help commemorate the RAF’s centenary.

A team of judges sifted through 1,000 photographs and 25 videos to choose the final images that are now up for the People’s Choice category.

The nine that have been selected – all taken in the 12 months before July 16 2018 – are available on the web to be scrutinised and receive your endorsement.

Voting will close at midnight on Sunday, September 16.

The winner will be announced on Thursday, September 20, at the Bentley Priory Museum, Stanmore, North West London – home to Headquarters Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, 36, impressed in the sartorial stakes today as she attended a service at Westminster Abbey.

The service was to celebrate the centenary of the Royal Air Force, founded in 1918.

To mark the occasion, Kate put her best fashion foot forward, wearing a gorgeous pale blue dress coat.

With cooler weather today than in recent weeks, the coat matched the occasion and day perfectly.

She complemented the summery coat with an elegant matching blue hat, featuring cream flowers and netting detail.

The stunning, structured coat came to just below Kate’s knees, showing a hint of the same colour skirt beneath it.

The gorgeous coat was delicately buttoned down the middle, with panel detailing around the waist and bust.

Attending the service at Westminster Abbey, the 36-year-old respectfully covered up with long sleeves.

The baby blue ensemble also featured a large open collar, adding a modern touch to the traditional coat.

On her right lapel the Duchess wore a striking, oversized brooch.

The opulent silver and gold brooch had the word “RAF” engraved on it, commemorating the special occasion and the work of the Royal Air Force.

Continuing the theme for opulent accessories, the Duchess donned a pair of huge silver, sparkly drop down earrings.

Kate elongated her endless legs with a simple pair of nude pointed-toe stiletto heels.

Her glossy brown locks were worn in a neat bun beneath the stylish icy blue hat, with not a strand out of place.

Keeping her makeup simple, she wore a nude smokey eye with just a hint of blusher and a pink lipstick.

She also carried a small silverly blue clutch bag into the service with her.

Kate’s blue dress coat was reminiscent of the outfits worn by her mother Carole and sister Pippa Middleton at yesterday’s christening.

For Prince Louis’ special day, Carole and Pippa both wore baby blue dresses, a nod to the sex of the baby.

Carole wore a £1,250 silk crepe 1940s ‘Influence’ dress in powder blue from Suzannah, while Pippa opted for a custom-made Alessandra Rich creation.

Kate on the other hand didn’t wear blue, instead continuing in her christening tradition of wearing cream with a stunning Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress.

Celebrating its 100th birthday in August 2019, British Airways are set to redesign their iconic uniform for all its customer-facing staff, it has been revealed.

The British flag carrier confirmed it will be introducing a new uniform as part of its centenary celebrations.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, British Airways commented: “We’re very much looking forward to celebrating our centenary next year.

“Our uniforms have been iconic symbols of the British Airways brand throughout our history, so we are excited that during this landmark year we will be introducing a new one to take us into the next chapter in our history. We look forward to sharing more details as soon as we are able to.”

However, specific design details are still under wraps. According to cabin crew blog, Paddle Your Own Kanoo, there’s rumours that “acclaimed British fashion house Burberry has been selected to design the new look for the airline’s 40,000+ employees”.

The airline’s last uniform was designed in 2004 by ex-Chanel and Givenchy designer Julien MacDonald and is worn by staff worldwide including cabin crew, dispatchers and check-in agents.

MacDonald said: “I was thrilled to be asked to design a new uniform for British Airways.

“As a designer for some of the world’s most glamorous women, it was a great challenge to design a uniform that is worn by such a large number of staff of different ages and sizes, and who work in many different roles worldwide.

“The uniform proudly signals the airline’s British heritage and blues, through the quality and attention to detail and in the overall professional image to the collection.”

MacDonald made the controversial decision to give woman a choice between skirts and trousers.

Part of its heritage, the uniform is an iconic pinstripe navy blue. Staff are subject to strict ‘Uniform Wearers Standards’ which outlines how the uniform must be worn.

Female flight attendants must wear a pinstripe navy blue smart fitted jacket, skirt with the hemline on the knee or pant trousers with a white blouse tucked in. They must also wear a blue, red and white cravat and either court shoes or loafers with hosiery.

Men must also wear a smart fitted jacket with trousers at least 25mm off the ground.

They must also wear a white shirt tucked in and a tie in the iconic blue, white and red.

All staff are required to wear the brevet, encrusted with the ‘astral crown’ and a rising sun. The pin also proudly states the airline’s slogan: To fly. To serve.

From the 1930s to present, the airline’s uniform is the most powerful symbol of the brand and recognisable around the world.

MPs representing the Communist Party of the Russian Federation have drafted a bill proposing a major amnesty in relation to the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution, citing a boost to the authority of state power as the main reason.

“The proposal is based on historical traditions of Russian statehood and has the purpose of strengthening the authority of the state power,” reads the note attached to the bill.

The sponsors of the motion propose that the amnesty should be applied to convicts who participated in combat defending Russia, those who worked on defense enterprises in times of war and also those who served in the Soviet and Russian military forces deployed on the territory of foreign states in times of military conflict – in particular, the Soviet military contingent in Afghanistan.

The last time Russia announced a nationwide capital amnesty was in 2015, in connection with the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Second World War. According to the Federal Service for Execution of Punishment, about 225,000 convicts were released from custody or had other punishments lifted under the amnesty.

In September this year, the nationalist-populist party LDPR presented its own bill proposing a major amnesty in connection with the centenary of the second 1917 revolution. The LDPR draft offers amnesty to underage convicts and adults who committed their crimes before coming of age, disabled persons, mothers with small children, pregnant women and older citizens – women over 55 and men over 60.

The parliament has not yet looked into this proposal.
