Guardian columnist George Monbiot is the latest to decry Facebook’s increased censorship after a video he made, on the crimes of European colonialism, was taken down by the tech giant.

In his tweet, following the removal of the video Monbiot wrote: “Here’s our video about the airbrushing of colonial history, that @facebook has gone and airbrushed.”

The video, produced by Double Down News, shows Monbiot talking to the camera, and is intercut with often gruesome film clips, as he goes through colonial history detailing atrocities committed by Europeans.

The journalist tweeted that he had not received an “explanation or a right of appeal.” Going on to implore fellow journalists Owen Jones, Medhi Hassan, left-wing publication Novara Media and activist Peter Tatchell to retweet his video.

Monbiot’s video initially looks at the crimes of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus – namely his massacre and torture of natives on Hispaniola, modern day Haiti and Dominican Republic, in the late 15th century.

The video also covers the “British manufactured famine” which led to an estimated “at least 12 million deaths” in India. Monbiot states that Indians were driven into work camps, “where the inmates received the same rations as the inmates in [Nazi concentration camp] Buchenwald and where there was a 94 percent death rate per year.”

The journalist, known for his environmentalism, goes on to detail Britain’s more recent crimes of colonialism, focusing on the torture and internment in concentration camps of Kenya’s Kikuyu people. The Guardian writer details the gruesome torture methods, including castration, used by the British against Kenyans, adding that the papers documenting the crimes were burned.

In 2012, Mau Mau representatives, an anti-colonist military force predominantly made up of Kikuyu, sued the UK. The British government, in a rare legal victory for former subjects of the British Empire, accepted that prisoners had suffered “torture and ill-treatment at the hands of the colonial administration.”

Monbiot decries that the actoricities of colonialism have been “completely airbrushed from our national consciousness.”

The video comes amid fierce debate over Britain’s colonial legacy, with many talking up the benefits of the empire, while others, like Monbiot, are arguing that Britain needs to come to terms with its colonial era crimes.

Libertarian presidential hopeful on Facebook censorship https://briefnews.eu/fake-news-v-alternative-facts-libertarian-presidential-hopeful-on-facebook-censorship/ https://briefnews.eu/fake-news-v-alternative-facts-libertarian-presidential-hopeful-on-facebook-censorship/#respond Fri, 07 Sep 2018 05:37:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fake-news-v-alternative-facts-libertarian-presidential-hopeful-on-facebook-censorship/ Facebook’s strategy to provide “alternative facts” to combat “fake news” will only result in political censorship that will cater for the interests of the Democratic Party, the Libertarians’ presidential hopeful told RT.

The world’s largest social media platform is now focusing its efforts on serving millions of their users with “alternative facts,” Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday.

“In the case of misinformation, what we do is we refer it to third-party fact-checkers. We don’t think we should be the arbiter of what’s true, what’s false, and we think that’s really important,” she told the lawmakers examining alleged Russian interference in US elections. “If it’s marked as false, we dramatically decrease the distribution on our site, we warn you if you’re about to share it, we warn you if you have shared it, and importantly we show related articles next to that so people can see alternative facts.”

Puzzled by her choice of words, many tried to decipher the hidden meaning behind Sandberg’s “alternative facts.” But whatever the actual meaning behind the phrase, Facebook will simply continue to screen out political voices in favor of the Democratic Party, according to Arvin Vohra, 2020 presidential hopeful for the US Libertarian Party.

“Maybe it is a slip of the tongue, maybe it is something worse, but really what we’re seeing is somebody who is pretending to try to provide fair and balanced media and is instead just going along with the status quo that generally supports, by and large, the Democratic Party,” Arvin explained.

The company began fact-checking news on its social media platform last spring, with help from ‘independent’ third-party fact-checkers, including agencies such the Associated Press and AFP. However, if these entities are meant to tailor to “alternative facts,” they will often spread inaccurate information, Arvin believes, noting, for instance, that the Libertarian Party was hardly mentioned by the mass media during the last presidential race.

Twitter permanently bans Alex Jones and Infowars for ‘abusive behavior’

“Facts are facts. Alternative facts, as far as I know, are just lies. When you have someone who is talking about trying to provide balanced information and they are taking zero steps to correct large and huge imbalances in political media reporting, then it is really hard for us to take it seriously,” the politician said. “Right now, what we are seeing in the media is just inaccurate news. We’re seeing just basically huge important areas left out entirely.”

Having been deleted on Facebook earlier this year, Telesur had been “even more careful” with its posts and broke “absolutely none” of Facebook’s terms, former director of Telesur, Pablo Vivanco, told RT.

Vivanco believes there is no justification for the social media giant to have removed the page once again, stressing that on Telesur, there was “always a process to ensure accuracy and journalistic ethics.”

While Facebook admitted that it was a mistake the last time it took down Telesur’s page, there are fears the incidents are links in a chain of tightening government censorship of dissenting voices.

Speaking to RT, James Petras, Professor Emeritus at Binghamton University and an expert on Latin America said that the US government — which did not recognize the recent re-election of president Nicolás Maduro as legitimate and has placed fresh economic sanctions on the country — is engaged in “an attempt to overthrow the [Venezuelan] government” and that targeting uncooperative media was one way in which they were doing it.

Washington, Petras said, is using social media platforms like Facebook to “isolate” the country and Facebook is willingly trying to “ingratiate” itself with US authorities. “The US is at war now with Iran, Russia, China, the EU and Venezuela and any dissident voices, so as the authoritarian position of the US increases, Facebook and other media are under increasing pressure to abide by the line that comes out of Washington,” Petras said.

He also predicted that more censorship from Facebook was likely in the future and that it would be directly correlated with US warmaking and economic sanctions around the world. “They want to create a global opinion that abides by US policy,” he said.

Telesur’s Head of Web, Tatiana Rojas, told RT that the outlet was one of the only news sources reporting “from a different perspective than US mainstream media” on recent events in Venezuela, including the recent assassination attempt against Maduro.

Rojas said that while she hoped it was a mistake on Facebook’s part, there are reasons to be worried that the platform will become “a place where plurality is not going to be allowed anymore” and where alternative perspectives will not be given space.

Vivanco said that “hysteria” around Russigate had enabled further censorship and that there were now well-founded reasons to indicate that Facebook is “collaborating” deliberately with Washington to target certain kinds of content.

He said that reason why so many people are suspicious of “fake news” today is because there is “a generalized concern among people that they are being lied to about what is really happening in the world” and that this could explain the rise in outlets giving an alternative perspective on world events.

“There appears to be a concerted effort to shut down voices that will challenge the way people are told they should see the world,” he said.

‘Truth is treason in empire of lies’: Ron Paul on Big Tech censorship https://briefnews.eu/truth-is-treason-in-empire-of-lies-ron-paul-on-big-tech-censorship/ https://briefnews.eu/truth-is-treason-in-empire-of-lies-ron-paul-on-big-tech-censorship/#respond Tue, 07 Aug 2018 23:20:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/truth-is-treason-in-empire-of-lies-ron-paul-on-big-tech-censorship/ After the executive director of the Ron Paul Institute got suspended on Twitter, the former congressman from Texas told RT that social media crackdowns are part of a broader effort to silence dissent in the US.

While social media could be a “real delight” and very informative, the biggest role social networks are playing is “working with the government,” Ron Paul told RT on Tuesday. The government is indirectly regulating speech through companies like Twitter and Facebook, he added.

“You get accused of treasonous activity and treasonous speech because in an empire of lies the truth is treason,” Paul said. “Challenging the status quo is what they can’t stand and it unnerves them, so they have to silence people.”

Paul served in the House of Representatives for over 25 years before retiring in 2013 and setting up the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity. The institute’s executive director, Daniel McAdams, found himself suspended from Twitter on Monday, apparently for retweeting a comment by radio show host Scott Horton.

Horton, who is also the editorial director of Antiwar.com, was suspended for criticizing journalist Jonathan M. Katz, after Katz complained to Twitter and got former former State Department employee and author Peter Van Buren banned from the platform.

“I’m just hoping that technology can stay ahead of it all and that we can have real alternatives to the dependency on Twitter and other companies that have been working hand in glove with the government,” Paul told RT.

“And if we, some of us, tell the truth about our government, they call us treasonous and say we’re speaking out of line and they’d like to punish us, and I think that’s part of what’s happening with social media,” he added.

Google Maps: Why has Street View blurred out this? Internet users spot strange censorship https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-why-has-street-view-blurred-out-this-internet-users-spot-strange-censorship/ https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-why-has-street-view-blurred-out-this-internet-users-spot-strange-censorship/#respond Fri, 27 Jul 2018 03:15:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-maps-why-has-street-view-blurred-out-this-internet-users-spot-strange-censorship/

Google Maps has caught a number of people in unfortunate scenarios.

Who can forget the gentleman who appeared to have wet himself?

However, this Google Maps Street View victim reveal the wet patch was really down to changing barrels in the pub.

Others have been caught in even worse situations.

For this reason it is probably a good idea that Google blurs out faces of those caught on it now.

There have been various cases of people arguing that Google Maps has breached their right to privacy.

Some have worried that activates they’d rather not be made public have been snapped by the car.

Google created a policy whereby members of the public can request to have an image blurred.

However, this seems to have gone a little too far.

Imgur.com users have questioned why Google Maps has blurred the face of an innocent looking deer.

Imgur users piled in to make fun of the snap.

One wrote: “Bambi’s in the Witness Protection Program after testifying against The Hunter.”

Another made the pun: The real John Doe.

“50 Bucks to the guy who can tell me this deers real name,” another said.

“What animal is that? I can’t tell…” another joked.

A mysterious object has been spotted of the coast of Greece on Google Earth.

One Google Earth fan who posted a video of the sighing on Disclose.tv claimed to have measured the object using the ruler on Google Earth.

By his measurements, the object is 220 feet long.

A woman with an extra body part was also captured by the Street View camera.

But what is the real story behind it?

UK politicians push for FOSTA SESTA-style sex censorship https://briefnews.eu/uk-politicians-push-for-fosta-sesta-style-sex-censorship/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-politicians-push-for-fosta-sesta-style-sex-censorship/#respond Fri, 06 Jul 2018 19:49:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-politicians-push-for-fosta-sesta-style-sex-censorship/

If you’re familiar with the phrase “that’s a terrible idea, let’s do it” then you might be one of the British MPs who think that the UK should do its own version of FOSTA-SESTA. That’s exactly what Labour MP Sarah Champion has done by leading a debate this week for the creation of laws to criminalize websites used by sex workers in the UK — under the rubric of fighting trafficking, of course.

A self-appointed group of MPs (the “All-Party Parliamentary Group on Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade”) fronted by Ms. Champion made a call to ban “prostitution websites” during a Wednesday House of Commons debate. Conflating sex work with trafficking just like their American counterparts, they claim websites where workers advertise and screen clients “directly and knowingly” profit from sex trafficking.

Watching British politicians advance something as broken and harmful as FOSTA-SESTA is like watching an animal try to chew its leg off to escape a trap — while we’re all standing outside the glass enclosure shouting “that’s the wrong leg!” Champion is apparently OK about the fact that they’re parroting Trump and FOSTA-SESTA; she’s even joked that it’s a special kind of irony. Indeed.

Unraveling the net’s safety

Just think about it, UK. We’ll have so much in common. Soon, you too can have pimps coming “out of the woodwork” to exploit formerly-independent sex workers, according to trafficking survivor Laura LeMoon from Safe Night Access Project Seattle. The UK can also get a massive increase in blanket online discrimination and censorship.

Maybe you’ll even get your own version of the massive lawsuit that’s been filed by EFF and the Woodhull Freedom Foundation on the grounds that FOSTA “silences online speech by muzzling internet users and forcing online platforms to censor their users.” EFF stresses that “FOSTA represents the most broadly based and comprehensive legislative censorship of internet speech since Congress passed the anti-indecency provisions of the Communications Decency Act in 1996.”

Friends in the UK will also reap the complete non-rewards of eliminating sex-work-resource sites in the form of police struggling to find and investigate sex trafficking crimes and criminals. There’s also the side-benefit for your more repulsive “punters” who, like ours, will openly take advantage of workers made more desperate by lack of safe advertising. Copying the Americans in this spectacularly wrongheaded fashion will also get the UK’s more vulnerable populations an increase in crime, abuse, and death after all the proponents of this terrible idea are done celebrating their victory.

You too can have scores of women, LGBTQ people, gay men, immigrants and a whole lot of people of color losing their income overnight with the passage of an inconsiderate, deeply flawed law that maliciously ignores the people it affects.

I mean — asking for myself — are people in the UK able to even read the news from over here? Because this FOSTA-SESTA thing hasn’t worked at all, unless by “working” you mean “driving traffickers deep underground” with a side helping of consigning sex workers to the shadows where they’re quite literally dying as a result of the law.

Because ignoring sex workers and trafficking survivors was key to FOSTA-SESTA’s success, its UK doppelgangers are doing the same. The Sex Worker Advocacy and Resistance Movement (SWARM), the English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP), and the xTalk collective all held a protest the day of Champion’s presentation, making clear that no sex workers had been consulted about proposed laws directly affecting them.

So much for believing women

In a time when #MeToo has changed historical patterns around believing women when it comes to sex and consent, Champion made a point to gaslight women who’d want to speak for themselves about the matter, tweeting: “Buying someone is commercial sexual exploitation. If you have to pay people to sleep with you — it’s not consent.”

Despite believing that once money is involved a woman can’t be trusted with her own power of consent, Champion identifies as a feminist. “It’s extraordinary that people who call themselves feminists are promoting the exact same legal model which the Trump administration has used against sex workers,” explained Jen, a sex worker and activist with SWARM. “We know already that SESTA/FOSTA is endangering vulnerable women and forcing them into the hands of managers and abusive partners. It’s also shifting power from sex workers to clients: Clients in the US are bragging about how they know sex workers can’t afford to make basic safety checks now.”

Not surprisingly, the Guardian, forever struggling to appear feminist and sex-positive (yet unable to understand why sex-positivity must include porn and sex work), embraced the cause by running yet another anti-sex-work piece supporting Champion and the MPs. BBC Woman’s Hour tried to do the same and got completely, painfully roasted on Twitter. It followed up with a slightly more balanced piece, talking to Niki Adams from the English Collective of Prostitutes about how the proposal would essentially be a disaster wrapped in violence and regret.

Reproducing a system failure

But, hey, since UK politicians are fancying the totalitarianism trend we’re having over here, why cut corners? Why not copy the utter sham of FOSTA-SESTA all the way down? Take the foundations of FOSTA-SESTA for example. Our lawmakers did not fact-check the bill’s claims, research the religious neocons behind it, nor did they listen to law professors, anti-trafficking groups, or sex work organizations.

The “All-Party Parliamentary Group on Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade” (APPG on Prostitution) anchored its argument in the “Behind Closed Doors” report. Like FOSTA-SESTA, it targets sex-work websites.

Everything that led to the free-speech and human-rights disaster that is FOSTA-SESTA centered on the American religious right’s crusade to remove Backpage — as an emblem for the moral (sexual) threat they perceive in the free and open internet. The site was one of several in its crosshairs where sex workers could avoid pimps and independently advertise, safely screening clients. These sites were also where law enforcement had a clear avenue to pursue actual sex traffickers, which are not sex workers.

The proponents of FOSTA-SESTA ignored anti-trafficking organizations, the Department of Justice (which opposed it), and more, while falsely and deliberately conflating trafficking with consensual adult sex work in order to accomplish their goal — magically making everyone disappear. As a result, over 150 websites once used by sex workers to screen clients and stay safe have been eliminated.

The group of MPs pushing to replicate FOSTA-SESTA in the UK are following the same roadmap. At the locus of their moral crusade are British websites Vivastreet and Adultwork. Like the now-shuttered websites in the US, Vivastreet works with law enforcement to find actual trafficking victims and fight this crime. “We take the issue of exploitation extremely seriously, and we are working closely with the Home Office to help develop an industry-wide approach to identifying and preventing online trafficking,” Vivastreet told the BBC.

APPG’s “Closed Doors” report attempts to give a nod to sex workers by advocating the “Nordic model” of criminalizing those who pay for sex. The Nordic Model, like criminalizing sex-work websites, drives sex work out of the public eye and into the dark where things get worse for everyone. There’s a reason Amnesty International backs decriminalization and not the Nordic Model. After the Nordic model was implemented in Northern Ireland, within only one year, crimes against sex workers went up 54 percent, with an increase of violent crimes to 77 percent.

“Behind Closed Doors” also leveraged the nifty trick of misquoting the UK Home Office report, “A Typology of Modern Slavery Offences in the UK.” Where “Behind” states that “10,000-13,000 victims are the ‘tip of the iceberg,'” the “Typology” report clarifies that this 2013 number covers 17 different types of modern slavery offenses (five of which are sex-related). Additionally, “there was an equal split between females and males,” and the report stated “the most common type of exploitation for adults was labour.”

This jibes with Freedom Network USA, “the largest coalition of experts and advocates providing direct services to survivors of human trafficking in the U.S.” It also has data backing its claim saying “more people are trafficked into labor sectors than into commercial sex.” Plus, Freedom Network unequivocally states that protecting the rights of sex workers, and not conflating them with trafficking victims, is critical to the prevention of trafficking. Freedom Network was not consulted for anything around FOSTA-SESTA, but gosh, it would’ve been nice.

It’s difficult to emphasize what a bad idea it is to reproduce anything the United States is doing to itself right now. Then again, we are talking about the same political body who brought us the impending commercial surveillance disaster known as UK’s porn age-verification plan. So you’ll have to pardon me for not feeling particularly hopeful about brighter, cooler and more tech-savvy minds prevailing here.
