A video accusing Israel of testing on Palestinians the weapons and methods of repression it later exports around the world was removed from Facebook for several hours, and only restored after complaints. “Palestine is Israel’s personal laboratory for testing, refining and showcasing methods and weapons of domination and control,” says journalist Rania Khalek in a video recorded for In The NOW web show and published on Friday. After it was posted on Facebook, however, the video was “erased without explanation.” Several hours later, Facebook restored the video after “some complaints,” Khalek said. Social media giants have the ability to “disappear content as they please,” she noted, adding it is “creepy and alarming and should be loudly opposed.” This is not the first time Facebook has censored pages and content critical of Israel. Facing political pressure after the 2016 US presidential election, the social media giant has stepped up censorship across its platform, teaming up with the NATO-backed Atlantic Council. It has also often had to backtrack on decisions to suspend or remove content as “mistakes,” due to public pushback. In addition to pro-Trump bloggers Diamond and Silk, Facebook’s censorship net also entangled are an article by a pro-Democrat outfit ThinkProgress, as well as the infamous photo of French President Emmanuel Macron with half-naked gang-signing residents of St. Martin, on grounds of rules against “nudity and sexual acts.” “This is why social media giants censoring content is bad. Eventually you’ll get censored,” Khalek said in a tweet on Friday. In her video, Khalek takes aim at Israeli marketing of their military technology as “battle-tested” and “combat-proven,” arguing this means they are being used to oppress Palestinians. Not only have Israeli arms exports quadrupled between 2002 and 2017, the country is the world’s leading supplier of drones, and was even given a contract by the US to build a high-tech “virtual wall” on the US-Mexico border in 2014, according to Khalek. Think your friends would be interested? Share this story! TV channel France3 has “fixed” a placard held by a Yellow Vest protester, which urged President Emmanuel Macron to resign. The broadcaster explained that the sign was broadcast reading just Macron, due to a “human error.” The unfortunate blunder occurred on Saturday during an evening news program that was covering the ongoing Yellow Vest protests. Among videos and images of the protests, France3 featured a photo supplied by Agence France Presse (AFP). It shows a couple of mounted police officers watching the crowds outside the Opera building in Paris on Saturday. One of the Yellow Vests holds high a placard, reading “Macron out.” Here’s this photo. Everything was the same in the France3 broadcast, except for a ‘tiny’ detail – the “out” part of the slogan had mysteriously vanished from the image. The photo-doctoring did not escape sharp-eyed watchers, who promptly accused the broadcaster of “censorship.” The replay of the program is publicly available online, and France3 acknowledged the blunder, blaming it on a “mistake.” “There was no intent to hide the sign last night. It’s a human mistake,” the broadcaster tweeted, supplying the unmodified image. “We have identified the source. It will not happen again.” It remains unclear how, exactly, one can doctor a picture in such fashion by “mistake.” Aside from the uproar and accusations of Orwellian-grade censorship, the blunder triggered a wave of jokes. Some users “fixed” the picture for France3, doctoring it harder. Here’s an example – the placard now reads “Long Live Macron!” Others suggested who might have been responsible for such an unfortunate “mistake.” Some jokingly suggested that Alexandre Benalla, the embattled former security aide to Macron, might have had his hand in it. Benalla has been involved in several high-profile scandals. Namely, he was caught on tape getting up-close and personal with protesters earlier this year. Macron’s aide was “helping” police to beat them … while sporting borrowed police gear himself. Like this story? Share it with a friend!

The Herald Sun has defended its Serena Williams “angry baby” cartoon by republishing the drawing on the front page of its Wednesday edition.
The cartoon, drawn by the newspaper’s editorial cartoonist Mark Knight, was initially published on Monday. He portrayed Williams with exaggerated features like oversized lips, a big nose, and wiry hair. She was also seen jumping up and down near a broken tennis racket and a pacifier.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Imagine this: Navalny, a highly-polarizing and outspoken opponent of the Russian government, beloved by the Western press despite his nationalist background, was sentenced to 50 years of hard labor in a Siberian borscht mine after being found guilty of high treason. (Actually, he received a 30-day prison sentence for something illegal in basically every developed nation – “blocking traffic without the correct permits” – but we’re sure the Siberian exile story must be floating around somewhere, even without restrictions on media reporting.)
Now, just really stop whatever you’re doing, put on some relaxing whale sounds music, and try to envision the blue checkmark scream-fest that would immediately break Twitter if, “in an effort to guarantee a fair trial and avoid prejudice,” a Russian court put a blanket media ban on reporting on the activist’s arrest and court proceedings.
Is it even possible to comprehend the number of hernias that would ripple through every Western news outlet and internet content farm if Russia had a law that inhibited Radio Free Europe’s ability to report on the latest abortion of Russian justice? Or even BBC and CNN?
This completely, utterly imagined out-of-this-world story still reminds us of something. The internet seems to be really unhappy over a UK court order prohibiting media outlets from reporting on the details surrounding the arrest and trial of Tommy [Redacted]. [Redacted] was [redacted] for breaching the public [redacted] outside [redacted] Crown Court on Friday.
“This is [redacted], I haven’t said a word…I’ve done [redacted],” [Redacted] said while being [redacted] by [redacted]. He would say that, wouldn’t he? Typical [Redacted].
According to the BBC, court-ordered media blackouts – like the one used to restrict reporting on Tommy Robinson’s current legal difficulties – are not entirely uncommon, and they are usually put in place to “prevent the publication of material which might prejudice a fair trial by influencing jurors to think that a defendant might be guilty.”
As for [redacted]: There may be perfectly innocent, even very reasonable reasons why the media can’t report that [redacted] was [redacted] while [redacted], and that he is now facing [redacted] for [redacted]. But we can’t help but wonder if Western media would display the same uncritical and dutiful obedience if such a decree were actually issued by… a Russian court.

Angus, 16, who is a pupil at Laurence Jackson School in Guisborough, North Yorkshire, says she was left “angry and upset” when she found seven “censored” stickers plastered all over her final GCSE art project.
She completed her GCSE art course with an illustration of girls, some completely naked and others in lingerie, kissing and embracing in intimate moments.
Angus says censoring discriminates against the LGBTQ community, and told RT: “I am upset because it took me so long to do.
“If it was a man or a woman they wouldn’t have done anything about that.
“They claim that every child can express themselves, but they then go and do that and set themselves back,” she added.
She said she had attempted to report the issue to the school, but that the head teacher had failed to ring her back.
The 16-year-old decided to raise the complaint with news publication Gazette Live, which decided to run a story on the incident. Outraged Angus, who has since left the school to work as a lifeguard, told the Gazette: “I can’t see why they censored it.
“When you go to an art gallery, they don’t censor them there. I wanted my work to be shown how I left it.”
She explained she had chosen the ‘out of place’ category for her final art assignment, hence the choice of subject.
“We had to do an outsider piece and had five options,” Angus said. “I did same-sex relationships as they seem to be out of place in society.
“I wanted to get across that it shouldn’t be frowned upon and it shows girls can be together. It is something I feel passionate about.”
The school’s spokesman has since admitted the censoring may have been “overzealous” but added that any “sexually explicit” content gets removed, regardless of what it stands for. They dismissed accusations of the stickers being homophobic.
“Due to the sexually explicit nature of some of the drawings in the student’s work, a censored strip of paper was Blu-tacked over these areas,” the spokesman said.
“As a secondary school, we needed to be mindful of the impact this may have on younger students. This piece of artwork contributed positively to the student achieving a good grade at GCSE.”

It’s no secret that China is fond of censorship. Now, however, the country has divulged numbers that give a sense of that crackdown’s scale. A report from the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress has revealed that China has either shut down or revoked licenses for more than 13,000 websites since the start of 2015, or just under 3 years ago. It had also prompted the closure of nearly 10 million internet accounts (most likely social network accounts). To no one’s surprise, there’s a heavy amount of spin on the reasons these sites and accounts were taken down.
The state-backed media outlet Xinhua said these closures were meant to protect the “party’s long-term hold on power, the country’s long-term peace and stability, socio-economic development and the people’s personal interests.” Of course, it’s that first part that China’s officials are really concerned about. While the country has fought against porn, rumors and terrorism, a large amount of its energy has been spent on preventing residents from seeing uncensored news and communicating privately online.
Accordingly, officials added that over 10 million accounts had been suspended due to people refusing to use their real names. China had ostensibly implemented the measure to curb rumors and salty language, but it’s widely believed to be an effort to silence dissent by making it easy to identify political opponents.
Like it or not, these takedowns aren’t likely to relent any time soon. China has been implementing ever-stricter digital laws in recent months, and not just to suppress opposition during its National Congress this October. The government has grown increasingly nervous about the ability to elude its filters and monitoring tools, and it’s not about to let a site stay up if it makes that evasion any easier.

A conservative media company has sued YouTube, saying that the online video giant illegally censors the short videos it produces.
PragerU was founded in 2011 by Dennis Prager, a prominent conservative writer and radio talk show host. The organization is a nonprofit that espouses conservative viewpoints on various issues by means of short, animated videos, which it posts on its own website, as well as its YouTube channel.
“Google/YouTube have represented that their platforms and services are intended to effectuate the exercise free speech among the public,” write PragerU lawyers in the organization’s complaint (PDF), filed Monday. “As applied to PragerU, Google/YouTube use their restricted mode filtering not to protect younger or sensitive viewers from ‘inappropriate’ video content, but as a political gag mechanism to silence PragerU.”

Facebook has banned the images of a statue of Hercules in Germany’s Kassel, the crowning jewel of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, until its custodians mounted a spirited online defense of the iconic monument.
The tourist board of Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, where the 12-meter statue is stationed atop a hill dominating the landscape, were going to use a rear-facing image of the muscular bronze demigod in an advertising campaign to draw more visitors to the landmark.
But despite the monument featuring in hundreds of guidebooks, it was rejected because the image violated the US social network’s advertising guidelines.
“We just laughed,” Ute Schulte, GrimmHeimat NordHessen tourist board director, told Hessische/Niedersächsische Allgemeine (HNA), a local newspaper, claiming that many couldn’t believe Facebook was actually being serious.
HNA wrote directly to the California-based company to question the decision, but was told that Facebook “does not allow advertising pictures or videos that show nudity, even if they are portraits for artistic or pedagogic reasons.”
It was then that the tourist board realized that the ban was not a curse, but an opportunity.
“We thought, before we got into a long back-and-forth fight, we’d just pull some swim trunks on him. We might even get a little extra attention that way,” said Schulte.
The reposted picture was circulated around social media, by those appreciative of ancient forms, but also those outraged at the crudeness of Facebook policies, and after several days, the US company relented, and allowed the proudly naked Hercules to feature in the campaign.
Such controversies have been frequent, even as Facebook has worked to liberalize its censorship of nude artworks, at least for ordinary users, if not advertisers. According to its latest internal policies, leaked in the Guardian last week, users can upload nude art images – even of children – as long as they are not “digital images” featuring “sexual activity.”
