The White House showcased a number of products made in each of the 50 states during its second annual “Made in America” event on Monday.

“We’re here today to celebrate the greatest products in the world — products made with American heart, American sweat, and American pride,” President Donald Trump said.

The Trump administration touted the importance of American-made and American-operated products, which was defined as having contained no, or a negligible amount of, “foreign content,” according to a White House pool report. Additionally, the product’s final assembly or processing must have taken place in the US.

“The single best tribute to our workers can be found in the unmatched quality and craftsmanship of the amazing products they bring from the blueprint to the storefront,” Trump added in a statement. “‘Made in the USA’ is a global symbol of unrivaled excellence.”

The products on display at the White House ranged from knives to cotton linens, while the bulkier goods, such as Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jet and Ford’s F-150 truck, were on full display outside.

This year’s showcase comes during a contentious period in US trade relations, after the Trump administration targeted China and some US allies with steep tariffs on a variety of goods. China has fought back with tariffs of its own, sparking a global trade war that some fear would plunge financial markets into chaos.

This isn’t the first time the “X-Men: Apocalypse” star proved she has no bad blood with her fiancé’s ex. When “TIME” named the Silence Breakers as its 2017 Person of the Year, people were upset that the country-turned-pop singer was featured on the magazine’s cover. When one Twitter user questioned, “Did we really need Taylor Swift in here though?” Sophie defended Taylor’s inclusion with a simple, “yes.” The magazine featured the “End Game” singer for her fiery court appearance in August 2017 where she won a symbolic $ 1 after a jury decided that DJ David Mueller, who groped her at a photo call in 2013, was in fact in the wrong. Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were talking with guests ahead of the Prime Minister’s own appearance on ITV’s This Morning.

The couple were on the programme to discuss the terminal illness, Batten’s disease, that affects two of their children.

The condition has been shown to improve if patients are given a drug called Cerliponase alfa, which is not currently available on the NHS.

After hearing the parent’s plight, Phillip urged the pair to take Theresa May to task as she would also in the building at the same time.

He told them to time their exit with her arrival into the green room so as to ask her about making changes to NHS funding.

Those watching at home appeared to agree with Phillip’s suggestion and took to Twitter to comment.

“The prime minister is the person to talk to on funding seeing as the government underfund the NHS! #thismorning,” one suggested.

While another said: “Yes that it catch @theresa_may in the corridor !! just watch out for the security #thismorning.”

“B****y brilliant @Schofe ‘Why don’t you have a cup of tea in the green room and pop out when @theresa_may cones in!’ That’s epic. Television gold and b****y brilliant! Actually beyond epic! #ThisMorning,” a third praised.

Hogmanay is what the Scots call New Year’s Eve and marks the arrival of the new year.

Its origin dates back to Viking times and the celebration of the winter solstice – many honour this tradition by dressing up as Vikings on New Year’s Eve.

In Edinburgh the new year is celebrated with three days of events, a torchlight procession, the famous Hogmanay street party and on New Year’s Day ‘The Loony Dook.’

The day before New Year’s Eve – December 30 – thousands of torch-bearers take to the streets for a torchlight procession along the streets of Edinburgh.

Revellers march through the city centre with pipes and drums and flaming torches creating a “river of fire” from the Royal Mile and the procession finishes with a fireworks finale set against Calton Hill.

The stalwarts of the torchlight procession are the Up Helly Aa vikings who have led the torch carriers for many years.

The Hogmanay street party is held on New Year’s Eve in Princes Street in the town centre set against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

The party attracts from more than 60 different countries and in 1996, the party drew in a crowd of 400,000 people.

As the bells strike midnight revellers enjoy a fireworks display from Edinburgh Castle and there is a national sing-along of Robert Burns’ poem, Auld Lang Syne.

The singing is accompanied by a mass linking of arms and arms are suppose to then cross each singer’s chest for the final verse.

Then on New Year’s Day people take back in the Loony Dook – the annual splash in the River Forth at South Queensferry with the iconic Forth Bridges as a backdrop.

Hogmanay celebrations can continue into January 2 which is a public holiday in .

In Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire they celebrate Hogmanay with a fireballs parade which is an event that has been celebrated for over 100 years.

Traditionally it was a cleansing ritual to burn off any bad spirits from the old year so that the New Year can begin clean and purified.

A piper leads the procession just before midnight as they swing balls of fire.

In Kirkwall the ‘Ba Game’ is an enormous game of street football that can last up to five hours and feature as many as 350 players.

There are lots of traditions which people take part in to celebrate Hogmanay.

One of the traditions is the clean the house and remove any old ashes in the fire – which symbolises the clearing out of the old year to welcome in the new one.

‘First-footing’ is also a tradition celebrated at Hogmanay.

The first person through the door on Hogmanay should bring things like coal, shortbread or cake to bring good luck to their homes.

Fire and fireworks are a large part of Hogmanay celebration and link back to the idea of warding off ‘evil spirits.’

The White House transformed from a grandiose building into a haunted spectacle to celebrate Halloween eve on Monday. Giant spiders and their webs hung from the walls as Jack O’Lanters featuring the faces of previous presidents were scattered across the garden.

Flanked by costumed children and parents, President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump handed out treats and posed for photographs as a steady stream of visitors awaited to greet the two on the South Lawn. It just so happened that the cheerful event fell on the same day that Trump’s associates, including Paul Manafort, were indicted in the Russia probe.

Children from 20 schools in the surrounding area and military families were invited to the event, according to the Associated Press. Trick-or-treaters received presidential M&M’s and home-baked cookies.

A Boston museum honoring the popular children’s author Dr Seuss has become embroiled in a race row over a mural depicting a “jarring stereotype” of a Chinese man.

The Dr Seuss Museum in Springfield, Massachusetts has agreed to remove the offending image but has now been criticized for kowtowing to political correctness. The illustration in question was taken from Dr Seuss’ first book, ‘And to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street,’ from 1937.

Author and illustrator Mo Willems announced Friday that he and two other authors, Lisa Yee and Mike Curato, would boycott an event at the museum on October 14 citing the depiction of a “jarring racial stereotype of a Chinese man who is depicted with chopsticks, a pointed hat and slanted slit eyes.”

“We find this caricature of ‘the Chinaman’ deeply hurtful and have concerns about children’s exposure to it,” the authors wrote in a joint statement published online. “While this image may have been considered amusing to some when it was published 80 years ago, it is obviously offensive in 2017.”

“This is what Dr Seuss would have wanted us to do. His later books, such as The Sneetches and Horton Hears a Who, showed a great respect for fairness and diversity.”

Andy Yee, a local businessman, offered to buy the mural if it is removed.

“That’s my ancestors coming to this country in the 1930s. We did not come wearing Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Why do you want to change history?” Yee said, as cited by Mass Live.

Yet more criticism of the decision came from Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, who said: “We should not have acquiesced to these authors’ demands. It’s their choice – their prerogative not to be part of the event. Again, where do we draw the line? This is political correctness at its worst, and this is what is wrong with our country.”

The row is yet another escalation in alleged racism surrounding the popular children’s author. A Massachusetts librarian recently rejected a donation of children’s books by Melania Trump, claiming that Dr Seuss was “racist.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama was even dragged into the racist argument retrospectively, after photos emerged of her reading a Dr. Seuss book to preschool children.

He was 92.

Lunn died in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Aug. 5 following a stroke, according to media reports.

A former pilot in the Royal Air Force, Lunn was inducted to the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Mich., in 2016.

Lunn oversaw the GT40 project as manager of the Advanced Concepts Group at Ford’s Skunk Works, known as Kar-Kraft. The sports car would go on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans race four consecutive times from 1966 to 1969 and become the first overall winner for Ford Motor Co. — or any American automaker.

The feat helped fulfill a longtime goal of then-Chairman and CEO Henry Ford II.

Here’s what Lunn told Hemmings Classic Car earlier this year about the early days of working on the GT40 under then-vice president and general manager Lee Iacocca and targeting Ferrari’s dominance:

“We produced the original Ford GT40 — it was called that because the height of the roof was 40 inches, level with my navel — with a 5-liter engine. We decided to make it a mid-engine car for the best weight distribution. But as we were working on it, Iacocca decided that it might be smarter simply to buy Ferrari. He appointed a four-man team to negotiate the purchase–I was one of the four. We went off to Italy and negotiated an agreement. But later the accountants and lawyers got into the picture to thrash out the details. After days of peppering Enzo Ferrari with myriad minor decisions he got so angry he called the whole thing off. Back in Dearborn I said, ‘You know, he really did us a favor, because if Ford had purchased Ferrari and continued winning races, everyone would have said it was because of Ferrari’s genius. And if they began losing races, the blame would go to Ford for interfering. I said the only real way for Ford to get the entire credit is to do it ourselves. So I was ordered to design, build and race a Ford GT40.'”

In 1962, Lunn also created the first Mustang I concept in just 100 days. It was a two-seat, four-cylinder mid-engine sports car with no roof.

Lunn left Ford in 1971 to become head of engineering for Jeep following the brand’s acquisition by American Motors Corp. There, he worked on the XJ Cherokee and Wagoneer and pioneered the use of the unibody chassis for SUVs. He also created the AMC Eagle, the first modern American four-wheel-drive sedan and the precursor to all-wheel-drive crossovers.


After retiring from AMC in 1985, Lunn became vice president of engineering at AM General, where he oversaw the introduction of the Humvee for the Pentagon. In recent years he had been serving as a mentor to mechanical engineering students at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and he was working on developing a “people’s car” made entirely out of sustainable materials.

Lunn, who was born in Richmond, England, in 1925 and earned degrees in mechanical and aeronautical engineering at Kingston Technical College, began his career at AC Cars in 1946, according to Automotive News. He later moved to Aston Martin, where he built two DB2s that competed at Le Mans, and British automaker Jowett before joining Ford of England in 1953.

In addition to his engineering accomplishments, Lunn was author of three books: “The Oil Crisis: Sooner Than You Think!,” “Globalization: A Worldwide Quest For a Sustainable Future,” and “The World Crisis: It All Started With 9/11.” He was reportedly working on a fourth book about the environment, sustainability and future cars.

Surviving family members have requested that donations be made in Lunn’s name to the UCSB Department of Mechanical Engineering to support undergraduate design projects and laboratories.

It’s Canada’s birthday!

July 1, also known as Canada Day, marks the 150th anniversary of the confederation. An estimated half a million people are expected to attend celebrations in the capital Ottawa, where the government spent approximately half a billion Canadian dollars (US $ 386 million) on the festivities.
