  • Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker reportedly counseled top DOJ officials on how to counter President Donald Trump’s demands for investigations into his political adversaries, while at the same time advising the White House on how it could force the DOJ to investigate those same claims.
  • In conversations with Trump, Whitaker is said to have cast himself as a staunch loyalist and promised he would “extract as much as he could from the Justice Department on the president’s behalf.”
  • Whitaker is now in charge of the Russia investigation and the special counsel Robert Mueller, and Friday’s news is just the latest in a series of revelations that throw Whitaker’s independence from the White House into question.

In May, Matthew Whitaker, then the chief of staff to former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, was reportedly counseling top DOJ officials on how to counter President Donald Trump’s fervent demands to investigate the baseless claim that the FBI “infiltrated or surveilled” his 2016 presidential campaign.

At the same time, Whitaker was advising the White House on how to force the DOJ to investigate those very same claims.

Scientists have found the oldest known drawing by Homo sapiens : a 73,000-year old sketch in ochre crayon in a cave near Still Bay in the Western Cape.

This is the earliest drawing ever found, and predates those in Europe by about 30,000 years, according to research published on September 12 in Nature.

Elon Musk wrote that he “hopes” to get sued by Vernon Unsworth, once again accusing the 63-year-old British diver who played a key role in the rescue of a Thai youth football team from a cave of being a “child rapist.”

“I suggest that you call people you know in Thailand, find out what’s actually going on and stop defending child rapists, you f**king asshole,” Musk reportedly wrote in a letter to BuzzFeed without offering evidence to substantiate his claims. “He’s an old, single white guy from England who’s been traveling to or living in Thailand for 30 to 40 years, mostly Pattaya Beach, until moving to Chiang Rai for a child bride who was about 12 years old at the time.”

Musk’s accusations against the British diver, who pinpointed the location of 12 boys inside the flooded Tham Luang cave complex back in July, started with Unsworth’s rejection of the billionaire’s proposal to use a mini-submarine in the narrow passageways. After calling the Brit a “pedo guy,” Musk quickly deleted his tweet and issued an apology, after the Brit threatened a lawsuit.

As the British diver and cave explorer prepares for the legal battle against the billionaire over “false and defamatory statements,” Musk says he is ready to accept the challenge. “As for this alleged threat of a lawsuit, which magically appeared when I raised the issue (nothing was sent or raised beforehand), I f**king hope he sues me,” Musk told the publication.

Meanwhile Unsworth’s attorney, L. Lin Wood, said that Musk’s accusations are nothing more than “vindictive and vicious” lies. “After deleting the initial accusation and tweeting an apology, Mr Musk has continued to republish his false and unsupportable accusation. His conduct demonstrates that his recklessness is intentional and designed to harm Mr. Unsworth,” Wood said.

Last week, the world was riveted by the successful rescue of a youth soccer team as they and their coach were pulled out of a flooded cave in Thailand. The team had been stranded on a narrow rock shelf in the dark for two weeks, the way out blocked by turbid stormwater. The rescue involved far more than a few divers putting on gear and heading into the cave—it required a tremendous amount of technical skill and posed extreme danger.

But why, exactly, was it so dangerous? And what would it feel like to dive in those kinds of conditions?

I’m a professional diver with 16 years of dive experience, including safety diving and cave diving, and I have trained numerous scuba instructors. I also work full-time in a safety diving role, so answering the first question from a technical perspective is easy enough. The short answer is that all cave diving is dangerous (we’ll dig into why below).

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on radio station 3AW on Tuesday that arrangements for honoring the two divers, Richard Harris and Craig Challen, are “all underway.”

Craig Challen, along with his diving partner Richard Harris, were among the team of international divers who were instrumental in the rescue mission which brought an entire soccer team to safety. Harris medically assessed each boy prior to their rescue, and it had been widely reported that the weakest boys were selected to exit the caves first.

A diver who helped rescue boys trapped in a Thailand cave may sue Elon Musk after the tech billionaire called the rescuer a “pedo guy.”

Diver Vernon Unsworth was instrumental in the rescue, and he said that Musk’s attempt to build a small submarine for the rescue effort was a “PR stunt” that had no chance of working. Musk soon promised to prove Unsworth wrong—and lobbed a baseless charge of pedophilia at the rescuer.

In a series of tweets yesterday, Musk initially challenged Unsworth to “show [the] final rescue video” before writing, “You know what, don’t bother showing the video. We will make one of the mini-sub/pod going all the way to Cave 5 no problemo. Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it.”

Earlier this week, Christian film studio Pure Flix announced it was on the ground in Thailand and seeking exclusive rights to the stories of rescuers, divers, and the families of the 12 boys and their coach who were trapped in a cave for up to 17 days. The managing director, who is married to a Thai woman who knew the former Navy SEAL that died on the mission, said it could be a movie that “inspires millions” and that he sees it being a “major Hollywood film with A-list stars.”
