BEARS sound clever; bulls make money. This piece of financial acumen, imparted by a trader to a colleague, is hard to beat for brevity. It also makes a good point. There is something about market pessimism that endows bears with an aura of wisdom that is not always deserved. The cautious sound clever because they appear to have weighed the odds. Optimists seem heedless by comparison. Yet it is only by taking on risk that investors can hope to make money.

So it is telling that even bulls are now sounding cautious. The economy and stockmarket in America have had a good run, after all. The expansion, which started in 2009, is now the second-longest on record. Unemployment is low. The Federal Reserve is hawkish. This mix tends to kill a bull market sooner rather than later. The question is how much further stocks can rise. Is there still time for bulls to make money? Or will being a bear save you money as well as make you sound clever?

In this debate, each side has a distinctive way of…

Why Cautious Canadians Are Piling on Massive Household Debt https://briefnews.eu/why-cautious-canadians-are-piling-on-massive-household-debt/ https://briefnews.eu/why-cautious-canadians-are-piling-on-massive-household-debt/#respond Sun, 01 Jul 2018 18:03:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-cautious-canadians-are-piling-on-massive-household-debt/

The property at 1005 East 22nd Ave. in Vancouver, British Columbia, looks like a nice little starter home — a one-story, two-bedroom, one-bath, 878-square-foot bungalow painted subtle pastel colors. In the yard is a garden with raised beds; downtown is a 10-minute drive.

The listing describes the house as move-in ready but perfect for someone looking to make some renovations. It notes that the property’s most important feature is its price: “Opportunities do not come around like this very often,” the listing reads. “This is your chance to own a move-in ready home in Vancouver at a price we have not seen for a long time.”

And that asking price? Try $ 1,099,000 CND ($ 873,820 USD at current exchange rates). It may not be a steal, but it’s definitely a good deal.

Canada’s extremely high housing prices, particularly in Vancouver and Toronto, where the average cost of residential property is $ 1,046,900 and $ 744,700, respectively, according to the Canadian Real Estate Association, are among the reasons why mortgages account for two-thirds of Canadian household debt, which reached $ 2 trillion CND by the end of 2016, according to a Fraser Institute report. When compared to GDP, a 2017 report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found that:

Canada has the highest household debt of the 35 countries monitored by the OECD, with a national household debt-to-GDP ratio of 101 percent.

Compare the sky-high ratio of supposedly cautious Canadians to the average household debt-to-GDP ratio of 63 percent among advanced economies, according to an October 2017 International Monetary Fund study.

Although experts typically recommend spending no more than about 30 percent of income on housing, a RateHub report found that Vancouver homeowners spend nearly 80 percent of their income to keep a roof above their heads, while residents of greater Toronto spent 72 percent in the first quarter of 2017.

Low interest rates are one reason Canadians have had the option to take on higher debt loads, says Royal Bank economist Josh Nye. The average five-year fixed interest rate for a Canadian mortgage in 2016 was 4.64 percent, according to RateHub. That’s been good for the economy while other areas, like business investment, haven’t been performing as well. And, although Canadians have been taking on more debt relative to increases in their household income, they’ve also witnessed rising asset values that simultaneously help improve their financial outlook. “The interesting thing,” Nye says, is that “even though they are taking on more debt, the amount of their income that they have to dedicate to serving that debt hasn’t increased all that much.”

It’s difficult to think about Canadians spending so much on housing relative to income without being reminded of the U.S. housing crisis a decade ago.

This could change, however, now that the Bank of Canada is gradually starting to increase interest rates. Some are worried that beyond the extra money households may spend on servicing their debt, its connection to steep increases in housing prices could signal a coming recession.

OECD economists Catherine Mann and Filippo Gori posted a blog about the report: “The housing cycle is an important risk factor as excessive house price developments are predictive signals of future recessions. … A number of advanced economies have experienced worrying increases in house prices in recent years.”

Insecurity is being felt on the ground too. Dan Garrison, associate director of housing policy for the City of Vancouver, says the cost of homeownership in Vancouver has increased 350 to 400 percent over the past 15 years, while incomes have only increased on average by about 20 percent. The steep increase in the cost of housing, Garrison says, is being driven by foreign buyers and speculative demand. “We’ve had low interest rates for so long now that that’s made money cheap, and I think people have taken advantage of that, but I do think that the high housing costs, particularly in Vancouver and Toronto, are a part of that equation.”

At the same time, Canada’s economy is doing fairly well. Unemployment dropped to 5.9 percent in November, and most households should be able to absorb rising interest rates, Nye says, adding that the Bank of Canada wants to start now, gradually, so that if inflation does pick up, it won’t have to raise interest rates suddenly and by a larger amount.

It’s difficult to think about Canadians spending so much on housing relative to income without being reminded of the U.S. housing crisis a decade ago, when the American household debt-to-GDP ratio peaked at 99 percent in early 2008, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. However, Garrison and others are working to bring the market back to what they think are reasonable parameters, and perhaps, if the current environment is foreshadowing a downturn, trying to manage this ahead of time will lead to a slow deflation to equilibrium rather than a collapse.

  • Goldman Sachs‘ commodity strategists are reiterating their bullish call on commodities.
  • “The strategic case for owning commodities has rarely been stronger,” Jeffrey Currie, Goldman’s head of global commodity research, said in a note on Tuesday.

Goldman Sachs is doubling down on its bullish bet on commodities.

The firm’s commodity strategists reiterated their call in early February, just before the stock market got rocked by concerns about inflation and higher interest rates.

  • US Defense Secretary James Mattis wanted to approach strikes on Syria with far more caution than President Donald Trump.
  • Mattis’ measured approach was recorded in public comments this week as well as in a number of high-profile leaks.
  • According to a defense expert, Mattis’ team may have used leaks because they “want the record to show” he wanted to proceed with caution in Syria.
  • Mattis is concerned that aggressive action against Syria could cause chaos or military action by Russia or Iran against US troops.

US Defense Secretary James Mattis may have used leaks about strikes on Syria to distance himself from President Donald Trump and potentially negative fallout from Friday’s US-led military action.

On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported Mattis was resisting Trump’s desire for sweeping strikes on Syria and successfully halted two potential attacks earlier this week. The Journal also said Mattis wanted “a more limited action that wouldn’t risk a wider confrontation with Russian forces.”

If there’s one thing PIMCO is stressing to its clients right now, it’s caution.

The $ 1.6 trillion asset manager doesn’t see another economic recession happening just yet. But with low market volatility and many economies around the world growing steadily, there’s an open door for complacency to creep in.

“While the current macro environment and outlook appear better than many of the younger market participants can remember, the last time a similar combination prevailed was in 2006 – and that didn’t end well,” wrote PIMCO’s Joachim Fels and Andrew Balls in their outlook for the next six to 12 months.

The following slides dig a little deeper, with pointers to some specific areas that investors should beware.

Enlarge / EA’s recent comments suggest the company will be bringing more than just FIFAto the Nintendo Switch before too long.

As Nintendo continues to celebrate an incredibly strong launch for its hybrid Switch console, a looming question remains about whether major third-party publishers will lend significant software support to the system. In a recent earnings call, mega-publisher Electronic Arts suggested that strong hardware sales may be convincing the company to give the system a second look.

“We feel really good about it,” EA CEO Andrew Wilson said in response to a question about the Switch in a recent earnings call. “We have a tremendous relationship with Nintendo and have done for many, many years and are excited by the fact that they have come out very strong and are bringing in a whole new player base into the ecosystem. We continue to be bullish on it and are looking at other titles that we might bring to the Switch.”

Though Wilson used the word “continue” in his response, Electronic Arts hasn’t exactly been full-throated in its Switch support thus far. Back in November, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said that the company was only planning “a game or two” for the Switch, while expressing skepticism about the system’s wider appeal. “It’s an interesting device. But I can’t yet predict how broad it’s going to be,” he said. “Will people be interested in a portable device alongside their regular portable device that they have today?”

China is becoming more cautious with credit — and that’s not good for growth https://briefnews.eu/china-is-becoming-more-cautious-with-credit-and-thats-not-good-for-growth/ https://briefnews.eu/china-is-becoming-more-cautious-with-credit-and-thats-not-good-for-growth/#respond Thu, 04 May 2017 10:02:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/china-is-becoming-more-cautious-with-credit-and-thats-not-good-for-growth/ FILE PHOTO: China's President Xi Jinping arrives for the third plenary session of the National People's Congress (NPC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, March 12, 2017. Following the defeat of the new U.S. healthcare bill, investors have begun to rethink the likely time frame and extent of the Trump administration’s other top priorities, such as fiscal stimulus. Equity markets stalled and bonds rallied as investors toned down their expectations for global reflation recently.

None of this is horribly surprising, but by focusing so intensely on U.S. political developments, investors risk missing a silent shift in what has arguably been the strongest driver of global reflation in the last five years: Chinese credit. This driver is now moving sharply in reverse.

China’s “credit impulse,” the change in the growth rate of aggregate credit to GDP, bears close watching: It has tended to lead the Chinese manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) by a year (see Figure 1) and the U.S. Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) manufacturing index by 14 months.

PIMCO_Blog_China_Credit_Frieda_May2017_Fig1PIMCO

The relevance of the Chinese credit impulse to global reflation cannot be overstated (see Figure 2). China’s massive credit stimulus starting in 2014 initially put a floor under commodity prices and emerging market (EM) growth. Then, the unexpected acceleration in Chinese real estate investment drove both commodity prices and volume demand higher. EM growth subsequently bounced, and with it, global trade volumes. The key driver of realized global reflation, then, has been China – not the promise of fiscal stimulus and deregulation that has helped boost confidence and other soft data in the U.S.

PIMCO_Blog_China_Credit_Frieda_May2017_Fig2PIMCO

When will China’s credit drop affect growth?

The sharp downturn in the Chinese credit impulse starting in 2016 portends a material drag on Chinese growth in the year ahead. Looking back on the past three years, the Chinese credit impulse turned positive sometime between late 2014 and mid-2015. Given China’s exchange rate volatility in August 2015, it took longer than normal for credit to gain traction. The Chinese credit impulse peaked in March 2016 and slowed sharply after the second quarter. It is only now that the impact of that reduced stimulus should be felt. PIMCO has already factored credit-related drag into its Chinese growth outlook, but the decline in the credit impulse has been sharper and more extreme than many expected.

The question now is not if China slows, but rather how fast. Equally important perhaps is the extent to which commodity prices will correct lower, especially in light of the current enthusiasm about the potential strength of the global growth cycle. The impending slowdown in China could be compounded by ongoing government efforts to rein in shadow bank credit; the cost of policy mistakes rises once the credit impulse goes into reverse.

Expectations for slower Chinese growth cannot be separated from China’s overarching political desire to underwrite stability ahead of the 19th National Party Congress this autumn. Chinese growth is not likely to fall off a cliff between now and then, regardless of what happens to commodity prices. Just as a less hawkish Federal Reserve is the backstop to market volatility, the Chinese growth “put” ahead of the Party Congress is ultimately the backstop to EM- and commodity-related credit risk.

Nonetheless, the complacency over China’s potential deceleration, combined with the greater likelihood that strong U.S. confidence indicators will now move more in line with the lackluster real economy data, suggest that some of the froth will come out of the most growth-oriented segments of the global markets.

Roar keep ACL hopes alive1:00

Asian Champions League: Brisbane have upset Japanese powerhouse Kashima Antlers with a 2-0 win at Suncorp Stadium.

FULLBACK Jack Hingert has been named in an extended 18-man Brisbane squad for the Roar’s A-League clash with Wellington Phoenix despite the facial knock he copped in his side’s 2-1 AFC Champions League win over Kashima Antlers.

A second-half head clash on Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium left Hingert floored and there were concerns about the state of his cheekbone.

He managed to finish the game but was set to have an x-ray on Thursday to find out the full extent of the damage.

“I’m not sure on Jack yet,” Roar coach John Aloisi.

“Instead of speculating, we’ll wait to we get the results, otherwise we’re just guessing.”

Central defender Jade North, who missed the win over Kashima due to a virus, is set to return against the Phoenix, but left back Corey Brown has been rested.

Brown is likely to be replaced by either New Zealand international Dane Ingham or Kye Rowles.

Spanish winger Manuel Arana hasn’t recovered from the hamstring problem that forced him out of Wednesday’s night squad.

SUNCORP: Roar pulls off monumental ACL upset

As happy as Aloisi was about his side’s win over Kashima, he said the Roar had to forget about the victory and focus on beating the Phoenix.

A win would improve Brisbane’s chances of finishing in third spot on the A-League ladder ahead of the finals series, which starts next week.

“It’s important that we recover well and switch our focus to the A-League, and we head into the finals in good form,” Aloisi said.

“This has been our plan the whole time to make sure we go into finals flying.”

Aloisi was wary of the Phoenix, despite the Kiwi outfit having no chance to play finals football.

“They’ve got nothing to play for, but they can be dangerous because they can just play free,” he said.

“They’ve got really good players, especially going forward. We have to be at our best to get the win.

“We have to pick ourselves up after a big game (against Kashima), but we feel we’ve got enough time to recover, and we feel the Champions League win will give us confidence.”

The Phoenix, who will finish in seventh spot regardless of what happens on Sunday, will be confident of a positive result, having beaten the Roar 2-1 at Suncorp Stadium on February 25.

Kyrgios prepares for USA1:36

Tennis: Nick Kyrgios claims he has never been in a better mental space. The young Australian is preparing to spearhead a Davis Cup tie against the US in Brisbane.

Thanasi Kokkinakis is nearing a return after a long injury lay-off.

Paul MaloneThe Advertiser

A WARY Thanasi Kokkinakis is close to making another attempt to return from injuries to the ATP Tour and eventually Australia’s Davis Cup team.

Kokkinakis is planning to play in the claycourt season, Tennis Australia’s head of performance Wally Masur said.

The 20-year-old Davis Cup player managed one only match in a 2016 season marred by shoulder surgery and other injuries and has not played a match since a Brisbane doubles appearance in January.

Kokkiankis’ agent did not respond to a question from The Courier-Mail on where he would play his first tournament.

The European claycourt season starts next week and ends at the French Open from May 28.

“He’s looking at working his way on to the clay as a surface that’s a bit kinder on the body,’’ Masur said.

“Thanasi is being cautious. He’ll be ready to play on the clay unless there is a hiccup.’’

Kokkinakis and John Millman will both use an injury-protected ranking to get them into Grand Slam tournaments and selected ATP events.

Millman says his plan remains to return at the French Open surgery in February to repair a conjoint tendon repair in his abdominal wall.

“I’m shooting for the French Open and I’m confident I will be there,’’ Millman said at Tennyson.

“I’m not hitting yet, but focusing on a big block of strength (training) and then hitting.’’

Masur said James Duckworth, a third one-time top-100 player who missed the Australian circuit because of injury, is two to three weeks away from hitting balls again after foot surgery and a recovery from a shoulder injury.

■ TA has announced that all proceeds from sales of tickets for the Davis Cup tie in Brisbane will be donated to the Australian Red Cross’ Disaster Relief and Recovery fund to support communities who suffered damage from Cyclone Debbie.

Tennis Queensland and Tennis NSW will match the funds raised through today’s sales and direct its towards more than 20 tennis clubs which have suffered structural damage.
