Overview of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on August 29, 2022.

  • The European Union said that it is preemptively donating 5.5 million anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine.
  • Potassium iodide will help protect civilians if there's an accident from fighting at a nuclear plant.
  • Southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia has seen recent shelling, sparking international concern.

The European Union is sending 5.5 million anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine so it can protect civilians in the event of a serious accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been caught in the middle of ongoing fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Ukraine requested last week that the EU donate potassium iodide tablets as a "preventative safety measure," European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) said in a Tuesday statement. Doing so would provide civilians near the plant — which has seen increasing hostilities — with protection from potential radiation exposure.

A nuclear accident can lead to radioactive iodine being breathed into the lungs and then quickly absorbed by the thyroid gland, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Potassium iodide can block radioactive iodine from ending up in the gland.

When a person takes the potassium iodide tablets, the thyroid gland takes in the medicine and is not able to absorb any more radioactive iodine, the CDC said.

Five million of the tablets are coming from the EU's emergency reserves, ECHO said, while the other 500,00 are being donated by Austria.

Southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe and has been occupied by Russian forces since early March. Since then, international watchdogs have voiced concern that unsafe behavior could trigger a major nuclear disaster.

In recent weeks, shelling around the plant has damaged the facility and disconnected it from the local power grid. Britain's Defense Ministry has said that the occupying Russian forces appear to be using the plant's protective status as a shield, leaving Ukraine reluctant to attack because it doesn't want to cause a disaster.

"No nuclear power plant should ever be used as a war theatre," EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said in a statement. "It is unacceptable that civilian lives are put in danger. All military action around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant must stop immediately."

On Monday, the International Atomic Energy Agency's chief Rafael Mariano Grossi said a mission is traveling to the nuclear plant this week to inspect its safety, stability, and security.

BBC Dad’s Army row: Hysterical Remainers claimed TV sitcom caused Brexit https://briefnews.eu/bbc-dads-army-row-hysterical-remainers-claimed-tv-sitcom-caused-brexit/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-dads-army-row-hysterical-remainers-claimed-tv-sitcom-caused-brexit/#respond Mon, 04 Jan 2021 21:25:14 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bbc-dads-army-row-hysterical-remainers-claimed-tv-sitcom-caused-brexit/

Su Pollard fondly remembers Dad’s Army writer Jimmy Perry

Fans of the classic sitcom were left baffled after the broadcaster issued a “discriminatory language warning” before replaying the Dad’s Army film from 1971. The film, which stars the likes of Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring, follows the ageing Home Guard platoon’s formation, and subsequent trials at completing a training exercise. Dad’s Army became a firm favourite with TV fans during the late Sixties and early Seventies, as it mixed comedy with the antics of World War 2 life, striking a chord with many viewers.

However, after the BBC issued its warning, BBC2 fans hit out at the broadcaster, asking: “What has the world come to?”

The broadcaster said the warning came as a word used in the film was a “derogatory name for a black person”.

It added: “Since Dad’s Army first aired public attitudes have changed significantly and guidance was given at the start of the programme due to a specific discriminatory remark.”

The broadcaster is regularly targeted with claims of bias, and after the referendum result in 2016, which saw the UK vote to leave the EU, author and TV producer Daisy Goodwin said the BBC had to stop repeats of the sitcom.

The writer behind ITV drama Victoria said that the old episodes had convinced the public to back Leave, as opposed to Remain in the vote four years ago.

She said that if people wanted to blame the BBC “for influencing the nation’s state of mind about Brexit”, she suggested critics look at how many times Dad’s Army is repeated.

Ms Goodwin believed the only way for the BBC to “maintain its claim to impartiality” was to retire Dad’s Army from screens.

She added: “The world of Dad’s Army is a comforting place – it was reassuring during the mayhem of the three-day week and it’s soothing to those of us who worry about the effects of a no deal Brexit.”

The producer also likened characters from the show to members of the Cabinet, during an interview with the Radio Times.

Former Brexit Secretary David Davis “sounded like Corporal Jones” – one of the older characters, with the catchphrase “don’t panic” – while then-Chancellor Philip Hammond “has Sergeant Wilson’s hangdog look about him”.

She added: “There is more than a touch of wide-boy Walker to Boris Johnson, perhaps the Conservatives, indeed the whole nation, need to be reminded that we are not living in Walmington-on-Sea.

“Our current difficulties will not be resolved with a comic flourish and a jaunty burst of Bud Flanagan.”

Walmington-on-Sea is the fictional seaside town the Home Guard were protecting from Nazi invasion during World War 2.

The Home Guard was made up of locals who were unable to take part in regular military service, mainly due to being too old to join the Army or the Navy.

It was up to them to take on the German enemies if they invaded from across the Channel.

Brexit and the sitcom have often been related, with European Commission deputy president Frans Timmermans once claiming then-Prime Minister Theresa May’s negotiating team were running around like “Dad’s Army idiots”.

Speaking in 2019, Mr Timmermans claimed Mr Davis “didn’t have a plan” on how to progress Brexit.

He said: “The first time I saw public utterances by David Davis, and I saw him not coming, not negotiating, grandstanding elsewhere, I thought ‘oh my God, they haven’t got a plan.

“That was really shocking frankly because if you don’t have a plan — you know, we see it — time’s running out and you don’t have a plan. It’s like Lance Corporal Jones you know ‘don’t panic, don’t panic’, running around like idiots.”

The newest row bears a similar resemblance to the dispute over the BBC removing episodes of Fawlty Towers from its streaming service last year.

It was argued that jokes in an episode called ‘The Germans’ had become outdated, and Dad’s Army fans fear a similar fate could await their TV favourite.

Tony Pritchard, a member of the Dad’s Army Appreciation Society, said people are “judging programmes made 50 years ago by what people think today”, adding: “Where do you draw the line?”

In Episode 4 of NBC’s freshman drama (airing Monday at 10/9c), when intelligence obtained by Shepherd (played by Jennifer Carpenter) during her stint at the notorious ADMAX prison is linked to a pending attack on U.S. soil, FBI agent Keaton (Morris Chestnut) and the Cointel team embark on a manhunt to find and stop a deadly international operative.

Along the way, Keaton is faced with questions of loyalty and betrayal by, among others, his late fiancée’s father (played by Major Crimes‘ Robert Gossett). In the wake of that emotionally crushing encounter, as seen in the video above, Keaton is left to wonder a lot of things — including, does Shepherd know how many people she has hurt? Piers Morgan challenges MP to turn down PAY RISE – 'PAIN you have caused British public' https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-challenges-mp-to-turn-down-pay-rise-pain-you-have-caused-british-public/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-challenges-mp-to-turn-down-pay-rise-pain-you-have-caused-british-public/#respond Mon, 04 Mar 2019 13:03:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-challenges-mp-to-turn-down-pay-rise-pain-you-have-caused-british-public/

Appearing on ITV Good Morning Britain, the Conservative frontbencher defended the Prime Minister’s decision to offer a £1.6 billion package run-down towns post-Brexit. But when confronted by Piers Morgan with the recent announcement MPs will receive a 2.7 percent pay rise this year despite the “dog’s dinner” they made out of the Brexit process, Mr Brokenshire failed to admit he and his colleagues could have collectively refused the incentive.

Mr Brokenshire said: “We made a decision several years ago after that lack of confidence in MPs having that decision-making process of MPs setting their own pay and conditions to put that out into an independent body.

“That’s what collectively we’ve decided to do and now we have no say.”

But Piers Morgan hit back: “Come off it! You could collectively all say ‘we’re not going to have it’.

“You could. You could just say ‘you know what? In light of Brexit, in light of the pain we are causing the British public, this seems completely inappropriate and we as a body’ – because apparently the parliamentary staff who are doing all the dog’s work in all this they’re only getting 1.5 percent.

“That must be growing a bit of attention as you walk through the corridors of power.”

The Tory MP re-highlighted Parliament’s decision to trust an external body to judge and adjust MPs’ salary claiming MPs “couldn’t make those changes”.

But the ITV host responded MPs could have made “one popular decision” among the “terrible” ones they are at the moment making every day.

He said: “No, I get it. But it doesn’t mean you have to accept it.

“As a body you could say ‘we listen to the public, we think this is inappropriate and actually we are not going to accept it’.

“You could do that. I mean you’re making enough terrible decisions at the moment as it is, what about making one that would be popular?

“Seriously.”

MPs are to receive a 2.7 percent pay rise, taking their basic salary for 2019/20 from £77,379 to £79,468, sparking outrage among taxpayer and workers’ unions.

The £2,089 hike, effective from April 1, is well above the current inflation rate of 1.8 percent on the main CPI measure. It follows a 1.8% boost to MPs’ pay last year, 1.4 percent in 2017, 1.3 percent in 2016 and a big increase from £67,000 to £74,000 in July 2015. MPs’ pay is linked to average rises in the public sector, as determined by the Office for National Statistics.

The 2.7 percent figure was announced by the ONS on an interim basis in December and confirmed last week to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), which made the final announcement.

Following reforms to the way MPs’ pay is calculated, the rise is automatic and not subject to a vote in the House of Commons.

Chairs of Commons committees will enjoy a 2.7 percent increase to the additional salary they receive on top of their basic pay, taking it from £15,509 to £15,928.

Ministers’ salaries are determined separately.

French road operator VINCI Autoroutes says it has become the latest victim of the nationwide Yellow Vest protests. It claims weeks of rallies and attacks on highways and facilities resulted in tens of millions of euros in damages.

The company reported on Sunday that the wave of demonstrations had affected some 250 of its sites since the beginning of the anti-fuel tax hike movement in November. Angry crowds burned at least 6 buildings and more than 30 vehicles, and vandalized several facilities and interchanges in addition to other destruction.

France counting up billions in lost revenues after weeks of Yellow Vest protests

The latest major highways which suffered from the Yellow Vest blockades on Saturday were A7, A9 and A20. Last weekend, the movement’s actions were reportedly calmer and fewer participants hit the streets compared to the week before. The protesters lit fires right in the middle of the road, blocking traffic, and turned one of the entry points to the highway into their “camp.”

The company’s report is the latest signal that the movement is hurting the French economy. Last week, the Bank of France lowered the GDP growth forecast for 2018 and 2019 from 1.6 percent to 1.5 percent, warning that the longer the unrest lasts the greater the losses will be for the national economy. In real money the sum amounts to $ 28 billion based on the IMF forecast for the country’s GDP of almost $ 2.8 trillion for 2018.

Strictly Come Dancing 2018: Shirley Ballas says bizarre ROYALTY mistake caused name gaffe https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2018-shirley-ballas-says-bizarre-royalty-mistake-caused-name-gaffe/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2018-shirley-ballas-says-bizarre-royalty-mistake-caused-name-gaffe/#respond Fri, 30 Nov 2018 20:49:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2018-shirley-ballas-says-bizarre-royalty-mistake-caused-name-gaffe/

Last weekend’s edition of Strictly Come Dancing was an explosive one as the series trialled its first Lindyhopathon in a bid to give the remaining contestants a chance to win extra points.

Chaos ensued on the BBC show as things started to go wrong with the carefully planned set up for the dance extravaganza.

And then in a startling twist the Queen of Latin said Karen’s name wrong.

Appearing on This Morning to discuss the series today, Shirley addressed what had really happened to presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford.

“It’s much easier than the first season, you’re holding the paddle pressing the things you know,” she began. “One or two glitches here and there, but basically it goes quite well.”

Not willing to let Shirley off that easily, Eamonn pressed: “What happened with iPad gate last week? Because we feel for you, we know you press the [home] button and you go like that to the home screen.”

“Well Darcey was doing the iPads,” Shirley answered with a smile. “And Craig had to write in his way, you know, first through seventh.

“The iPad seemed to go down and then we were fumbling for this piece of paper.”

Recalling the evening’s events, Shirley continued: “And for a split second I glanced up and saw royalty there.

“And then as I glanced down I saw Charles [Venn] and Karen, and it just rolled off my tongue [Prince] Charles and [Princess] Diana.”

The star laughed as she admitted her strange association and Ruth and Eamonn’s eyebrows raised at the story.

“I did apologise to Karen,” the judge insisted. “She took it with a great sense of humour. But yeah it’s just live TV so that happens…”

Keen to show her support for the guest, Ruth assured: “Always proves it’s live doesn’t it?”

“And actually people quite like it sometimes when it goes a little bit wrong… just a little bit wrong, don’t they?” she giggled conspiratorially.

The royal audience members Shirley had been referring to were Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and her mother Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

The two women were pictured standing up and cheering on the acts as they delivered their show-stopping performances, particularly former contestant Graeme Swann and his professional dance partner Oti Mabuse.

The pair danced a traditional Quickstep and had most of the audience on their feet, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to save them from the public vote.

Forced to dance against Ashley Roberts and Pasha Kovalev in the dance off, Graeme and Oti lost out as the judges unanimously voted to save the former Pussycat Dolls singer.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 7.10pm on BBC One.

When London’s Millennium Bridge first opened in June 2000, the city was alarmed to discover that the motion of crowds of pedestrians crossing it gave rise to significant shaking and swaying. Londoners nicknamed it “Wobbly Bridge.” Officials shut it down after just two days, and the bridge remained closed for the next two years until appropriate modifications could be made to stop the swaying.

It’s not an entirely unknown phenomenon: there’s a sign dating back to 1873 on London’s Albert Bridge warning military troops to break their usual lock-step motion when crossing. The culprit was not Millennium Bridge’s design. Rather, it was due to a weird synchronicity between the bridge’s lateral (sideways) sway and pedestrians’ gaits.

A new paper in Biology Letters sheds further light on this by simulating the biomechanics of large crowds of people walking on a bridge. While there have been many different approaches to studying these fascinating dynamics over the years—including a lab-based treadmill recreation of people walking across Millennium Bridge by Cambridge University engineer Allan McRobie—this is a significantly improved model of how people adjust their gait when walking on a wobbly surface, according to co-author Varun Joshi of Ohio State University. It suggests that one might not even need synchronization to cause the shaking.
