Marlon Brando’s performance as Don Vito Corleone in “The Godfather” is one of the best remembered in film history. The part won Brando his second Academy Award for Best Actor (an honor he declined). The film’s opening, where Don allows the people of the neighborhood to ask him for favors on the day of his daughter’s wedding, is one of those scenes that everybody knows. Even if you’ve never seen “The Godfather” itself, you’ve probably seen a homage or parody of that moment.

However, the road to Brando getting the part wasn’t an easy one. While he had the support of director Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter/novel author Mario Puzo, the producers were dead set against casting him. It took a lot of pushback from Coppola, and a screen test from Brando, for the bigwigs of Paramount Pictures to relent.

Why Paramount Wanted Anybody But Brando

According to Brando biography “Somebody: The Reckless Life and Remarkable Career of Marlon Brando” by Stefan Kanfer, the actor first heard of “The Godfather” in 1970 when Mario Puzo sent him a handwritten letter. According to Puzo, Brando was, “the only actor who can play the Godfather with that quiet force and irony the part requires.” Coppola’s own notes indicate Brando was his first, if not only choice for the role. As Kanfer documents, Brando’s interest was piqued because he saw the movie as a chance to satirize corporate America, “the Mafia is the best example of capitalists we have.” With Brando eager to star, why was Paramount so bearish on him?

While Brando’s talent was indisputable in the 1970s, he’d also become infamous for prima donna behavior, he was past his physical prime, and he had a string of flops to his name. Executives at Paramount suggested numerous other actors, including Coppola’s second pick Sir Laurence Olivier, Ernest Borgnine, and Richard Conte (who would instead play the antagonistic Don Barzini).

It didn’t help that Brando wasn’t Italian. Robert Evans, head of Paramount, was convinced Italian authenticity was the key to success for “The Godfather.” Coppola was hired as director in part because of it (Peter Bart, vice president of creative affairs at Paramount, also thought the young director would be affordable). Brando, however, had been born in Nebraska to a “mostly Irish” family, a far cry from the Italian-born, New York-raised Vito.

When the executives relented to Coppola’s wishes, they attached three conditions. First, Brando would work for a reduced salary. Second, the actor would have to put up a $ 1 million bond to disincentivize him from slowing production down with his antics. And third, he would have to do a screen test.

The Screen Test That Wasn’t

Francis Ford Coppola, knowing Brando would be insulted, staged the screen test in an underhanded way — he didn’t even tell Brando what it was. As Kanfer writes, Coppola called up the actor and suggested, “Mr. Brando, don’t you think it would be a good idea if we fooled around a little bit, and do a little improvisation for the role, and see what it would be like?” Brando agreed, and the next day Coppola showed up at Brando’s home with a small crew and prop selection, including cigars to Italian food. Brando entered the room in a kimono and ponytail then exited as Don Corleone. Kanfer writes:

“He rolled up the ponytail, took some shoe polish, and colored his hair black. On his instructions, a makeup man penciled in a little mustache and darkened the creases around the actor’s mouth and eyes. Marlon stuffed facial tissue in his cheeks, wrinkled his collar some more, put on a jacket, lit a cigar, tightened his diction – and turned into Don Corleone. One of the cameramen showed him a playback of the videotape. He was pleased at his bulldog appearance, ‘mean-looking, but warm underneath.'”

Coppola arranged a screening of the screen test for Charles Bluhdorn, president of Paramount’s parent company Gulf + Western. When Bluhdorn saw the made-up Brando, he signed off. Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2009, Coppola remembered, “Once [Bluhdorn] was sold on the idea, all of the other executives went along.” As for Evans, he didn’t even recognize Brando in the test footage: “He looks Italian, fine. But who is he?”

Brando’s casting may have been a loss for Evans’ ego, but it was a victory for “The Godfather” itself.

Albert Square could see some forbidden romance in upcoming episodes.

Bex Fowler (played by Jasmine Armfield) and Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami) are growing closer on EastEnders.

But as viewers know, Kush and Martin Fowler (James Bye) have a strong bond that nothing could break – except maybe this.

How could Kush possible expect Martin to cope with the idea of his best friend and his daughter together?

Will Martin end up turning violent on the BBC soap if he catches Bex and Kush in a very uncompromising position?

What’s more, Bex is still a teenager living a drama-ridden life, whereas Kush is decades older with children of his own.

Is the potential union destined to crash and burn? Or could it be true love for the couple?

Next week’s episodes sees Bex and Kush reminiscing and sharing their memories of beloved late teen Shakil Kazemi, who died in Walford last year.

The fan-favourite character was the victim of a terrible and tragic knife crime, as the soap’s bosses wanted to shine a light on the growing numbers of dead teenagers to the horrible act of violence in the UK.

While Bex and Kush simply remain friends on the soap at the moment, in true EastEnders fashion things could quickly progress into something more.

What’s more, Kush is becoming fiercely protective of his best friend’s daughter, and even gets involved when it appears Stuart Highway (Ricky Champ) is beginning to show too much interest.

Bex is struggling with the pressure of revising for her GCSEs in upcoming episodes, and after a bust-up with her best friend Louise Mitchell Stuart finds her upset and alone in the street.

An angry Kush tells Martin straight away Stuart is causing trouble for Bex, but upsetting the teenager’s father is a risky move.

Seeing red, Martin marches over to Stuart and Dot Branning’s (June Brown) house for answers, but he won’t get the ones he wants.

Frustrated Kush has gotten the wrong end of the stick, Martin has an argument with his mate, but while the story dies down Bex is still on the lookout for the older man too.

Kush acquires some faux fur coats for his market stall from the Slater family, and is delighted.

Unfortunately Bex discovers he may have been duped with some stolen real fur ones instead.

Determined to rush to his rescue, Bex, tries to help the stall-worker, so are the soap’s producers setting up a powerful new love story for the pair?

EastEnders continues Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.

Google Play caught hosting an app that steals users’ cryptocurrency

Google Play has been caught hosting yet another malicious app, this time one that was designed to steal cryptocurrency from unwitting end users, researchers said Friday.

The malware, which masqueraded as a legitimate cryptocurrency app, worked by replacing wallet addresses copied into the Android clipboard with one belonging to attackers, a researcher with Eset said in a blog post. As a result, people who intended to use the app to transfer digital coins into a wallet of their choosing would instead deposit the funds into a wallet belonging to the attackers.

So-called clipper malware has targeted Windows users since at least 2017. Last year, a botnet known as Satori was updated to infect coin-mining computers with malware that similarly changed wallet addresses. Last August came word of Android-based clipper malware that was distributed in third-party marketplaces.

In what must have been the most uncomfortable flight outfit ever, the 60 year old was found with her menagerie of rodents squirming around her thighs. She was stopped by customs officers who quickly became aware of something untoward. The passenger had finished a trip to China and returned to Taiwanese island Kinmen, very nearly completing her journey with the gerbils in tact. Yet it was at the final customs checkpoint where she fell foul of the regulations.

Coast Guard officials noticed she was strolling awkwardly.

After she was questioned, she revealed the pets, each individually wrapped in plastic bags.

These were strapped to her legs, but were effectively disguised under her long-hemmed skirt.

According to Chinese news station 97x, she told the authorities she was smuggling the animals for friends.

She then insisted she had bought them at a pet store in China.

The gerbils were all sadly euthanised by vets.

The lady was then charged with violating the Infectious Animal Disease Prevention and Control Act.

Meanwhile, a fellow airline passenger has captured the shocking moment they spotted an animal in the plane.

The traveller was on a commercial flight when they took the video which has since gone viral.

In the video, the person was filming as they walked down the aisle.

They turned and looked down the side of the seats only to spot something very confusing.

What he saw caused him to burst into laughter.

A pair of animal legs could be seen sticking out of the gap between the plane exterior and the middle wall.

The two furry legs and tail were straight as they were stuck in the small hole.

The person filming then looked on the either side of the wall and saw a cat looking at him.

Animals are not often allowed on flights so what the cat was doing has not been revealed.

  • The helicopter for a local Kansas City TV station captured a game of “Mario Kart” being played on the jumbotron at Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals.
  • Aerial footage showing the game on the screen was posted to Twitter on Tuesday, where the post has recieved more than 10,000 retweets and 44,000 likes.
  • Although Twitter users had many theories about who was playing “Mario Kart,” the game was actually organized as a way to raise money for the Royals’ beneficiary foundation, Royals Charities.

Some lucky “Mario Kart 8” players were recently able to duke it out on an 100-foot jumbotron screen in a 40,000-seat stadium. 

Aerial footage posted to Twitter on Tuesday captured an excited Super Mario crossing the finish line on the massive jumbotron screen at Kauffman Stadium, home to the Kansas City Royals baseball team. The game being played seems to be “Mario Kart 8,” the latest iteration in Nintendo’s fan-favorite franchise.

A Frenchman who was captured pummeling a riot police officer during Yellow Vest protests in Paris has been revealed to be a former professional boxer.

Former light heavyweight champion of France, Christophe Dettinger, was filmed repeatedly punching the officer, who was wielding a baton and a shield, as the protest turned violent on on a bridge in central Paris on Saturday. Video footage of the incident went viral over the weekend, leading to the boxer’s identification by police.

Police were forced to retreat as Dettinger vaulted onto the bridge and repeatedly punched the officer despite the cop being fully clad in protective riot armor. Separate footage of a different scuffle shows the same man repeatedly kicking and punching another officer while he lay on the ground.

The French police union revealed on Twitter that, thanks to footage posted on social media, the attacker had been identified.

“Sir, you who punched a colleague on the ground, you have been identified. For a boxer, you do not respect a lot of rules. We will teach you those of the penal code,” the tweet read.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner described the attack as “cowardly and intolerable,” announcing via Twitter that he had contacted the public prosecutor to open an investigation into the incident.

However, supporters of the Yellow Vest movement have labeled Dettinger a hero who was simply ‘beating’ officers at their own game.
