  • President Donald Trump’s former adviser and close confidant, Omarosa Manigault Newman, sparked several workplace controversies before her dramatic departure from the White House this week.
  • In one instance, Newman reportedly lashed out at prominent members of the Congressional Black Caucus following a March meeting, when they requested privacy in the West Wing to discuss what they would tell reporters. 
  • “You don’t get to come into our house and demand to have f—— privacy,” Newman reportedly said.
  • The account was disputed by a source close to Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, the chairman of the CBC. 

It’s no secret that Omarosa Manigault Newman’s departure from the White House was fraught with controversy.

Chief of staff John Kelly reportedly fired Newman earlier this week because she “acted very vulgar and cursed a lot and said she helped elect President Trump,” according to Urban Radio Networks’ April D. Ryan. After being fired, Newman is said to have walked to the president’s residence and “tried to get in.” Secret Service then reportedly had to escort her off the grounds. 

On Friday, an ABC News report suggested that Newman’s entire tenure at the White House was filled with similarly tense encounters. 

In March, Newman met with prominent members of the Congressional Black Caucus after they had a highly-publicized meeting with Trump. Newman had arranged the meeting in her role as communications director for the Office of Public Liaison. 

After the meeting, members of the caucus asked to be left alone in the lobby of the West Wing to discuss what they would tell reporters waiting outside, ABC News said. 

Newman reportedly told the lawmakers, “You don’t get to come into our house and demand to have f—— privacy.” A source told ABC News that a member of the White House staff tried to convince Newman to give the lawmakers privacy, but she would not walk away. 

That account was somewhat disputed by a source close to Democratic Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. The person told ABC News that Newman didn’t overstep any boundaries and was defending a White House staffer. 

“She was within her right to do that because a CBC person was being a bit rude,” they said. 

Before her departure, Newman had come under some media scrutiny because her position in the White House was vague and undefined, which frustrated some of her colleagues. Kelly, who became chief of staff last summer, is said to have made it a key focus to determine the exact roles and responsibilities of main West Wing staffers like senior adviser Jared Kushner and former chief strategist Steve Bannon. 

Following her dismissal, Newman said that the White House’s “lack of diversity” made her feel “very lonely.”

Just ahead of Mother’s Day, two bills seeking to curb Texas’ alarming rise in maternal deaths were among more than 100 that met their demise Friday, the result of maneuvering by a group of House Republicans dedicated to disruption in the chamber.

In a stunning blow to public health experts and advocates, the 12-member House Freedom Caucus used a parliamentary maneuver to kill a wide slate of bills, including House Bill 1158, which would have connected first-time pregnant women enrolled in Medicaid to services, and House Bill 2403, which would have commissioned a study on how race and socioeconomics affect access and care for pregnant black women.

Both bills were aiming to help the state better understand how to better reach expecting mothers.

Between 2011 and 2012, 189 Texas mothers died less than a year after their pregnancy ended — mostly from heart disease, drug overdoses and high blood pressure, according to the state’s Task Force on Maternal Mortality and Morbidity. And the state’s maternal mortality rates nearly doubled between 2010 and 2014, the medical journal Obstetrics and Gynecology reported last year. 

The efforts to address that problem were far from the only ones thwarted as a result of the Freedom Caucus’ maneuvering, which began during an emotional session Thursday, ahead of the House’s deadline to pass legislation originating in that chamber.

The other legislation that died included a bill from Rep. Helen Giddings, which would have banned school districts from identifying students without enough money in their school lunch accounts, by allowing families a grace period to resolve an insufficient balance on a meal card.

Rep. Tony Dale’s effort to crack down on sexual coercion of young children using the internet was also a casualty.

Additionally, a sunset safety net bill died. If a similar measure does not come out of the Senate, it could mean Gov. Greg Abbott will have to reconvene lawmakers for a special session to keep a long list of state agencies from shutting down. All state agencies must undergo periodic “sunset” reviews by the Legislature or be forced to shut down if reforms aren’t passed.

The caucus blocked the bills by objecting to their listing on the local and consent calendar, which fast tracks legislation not expected to generate debate. If five or more lawmakers object to a bill on that calendar, it must be considered in the regular legislative process.

The caucus members booted the bills from that calendar and slowed down proceedings Thursday night to prevent many other bills from being discussed before the midnight deadline.

The caucus members announced Thursday they were punishing House leaders after what they called a session of routine obstruction of key anti-abortion, 2nd Amendment and property rights bills.

“The fact that we stand at the back mic to hold leadership accountable for the rules, and they get frustrated and they start killing our legislation is absolutely absurd,” one caucus member, state Rep. Tony Tinderholt, R-Arlington, said Thursday. “The fact that priority items and emergency items for Republicans are not being brought to the floor for us to fight for is absolutely disgusting.”

Rep. Shawn Thierry, D-Houston, was in tears Friday morning recounting how she tried to talk to members of the Freedom Caucus, including Tinderholt, Jonathan Stickland and Kyle Biedermann, out of putting HB 2403 on their hit list.

She argued to them that it was a “pro-life” bill, because the black mothers who died had carried their babies to term. Caucus members agreed, she said, but declined to change their plans and told Thierry it wasn’t personal.

“It was like a drive-by shooting,” Thierry said. 

Thierry said she would try to resurrect the bill as an amendment on Brenham state Sen. Lois Kolkhorst‘s Senate Bill 1929. That bill would include sunsetting the state’s Task Force on Maternal Mortality and Maternal Morbidity in 2023.

Giddings was among those also hoping to revive bills by attaching them to other measures still moving through the Legislature in its final weeks. The House still has time to pass bills originating in the Senate, which can be amended.

“I think what’s happened to this bill is unconscionable,” Giddings said of House Bill 2159. “We are going to fight till the end.”

Scavino, who has long been a top aide to President Donald Trump, called Michigan Rep. Justin Amash a “big liability” and called for Trump supporters to vote him out in 2018. 

Amash replied shorty afterward, tweeting: “Bring it on. I’ll always stand up for liberty, the Constitution & Americans of every background.”

“Trump admin & Establishment have merged into #Trumpstablishment. Same old agenda: Attack conservatives, libertarians & independent thinkers,” he wrote.

Scavino’s tweet prompted speculation over whether he had violated the Hatch Act, which prohibits executive branch employees from certain political activities.

“Look at the official photo on this page. Read the Hatch Act and fire this man NOW,” tweeted Richard Painter, a former ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration.

Scavino’s tweet is the latest move in what appears to be an escalating feud between the Freedom Caucus and the Trump administration, following the failure to repeal Obamacare last month.

Trump has pinned blame on the group for the failed American Health Care Act, which was pulled just before it went to the House floor after it became clear Republicans were unable to garner enough votes. Members of the Freedom Caucus had argued the bill didn’t go far enough in repealing Obamacare.

The Freedom Caucus “was able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory,” Trump tweeted earlier this week. “The Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don’t get on the team, & fast.”

Yet members have been defiant in the face of Trump’s criticism. On Thursday Amash tweeted that “It didn’t take long for the swamp to drain @realDonaldTrump.”

“No shame, Mr. President,” he wrote. “Almost everyone succumbs to the D.C. Establishment.”
