So this is how the zombie apocalypse will go down: in song. Anna and the Apocalypse, the acclaimed horror-musical-comedy that broke everyone’s brains at Fantastic Fest (in a good way), has a new music video for the song “Soldier at War,” performed by Ben Wiggins. In the new Anna and the Apocalypse music video, we see how the residents of the sleepy town of Little Haven deal with the zombie apocalypse.

Anna and the Apocalypse Music Video

The music video for “Soldier at War” is a gleeful bloodbath, depicting the events of the zombie apocalypse that descends upon the sleepy town of Little Haven — in song! It’s the second music video released by MGM, and comes just in time for the holidays, a.k.a. the best time to watch a zombie slaughter.

Based on a BAFTA-winning short film called Zombie Musical, Anna and the Apocalypse is a Scottish zombie Christmas musical comedy that sounds like a punchline to a joke, but earned all kinds of critical raves when it premiered at Fantastic Fest last year.  /Film’s own Jacob Hall called it a “fully realized musical horror movie with actual stakes…and the nerve to literally tear its lovable cast to pieces.”

The film is directed by John McPhail, written by Alan McDonald and the late Ryan McHenry, and features original music by Roddy Hart and Tommy Reilly.

Watch the full trailer right here, and read the Fantastic Fest synopsis:

Teenage Anna’s life is typical enough. Chafing against the narrow horizons of her small town, she dreams of bigger things. It’s not so much that she doesn’t love her friends and family — she does — it’s just that they’re all so… familiar. So typical. So predictable. Her childhood best friend aches for a romance that she has no interest in, no matter how close they might be. The school jock that she had a fling with is proving to be disappointingly predictable in his behavior. And it’s becoming progressively harder for Anna to conceal her disappointment with just how satisfied her widower-father is with the blue collar simplicity of his never-changing existence. And then it all goes to shit.

The night of the high school Christmas concert marks the arrival of the undead in Anna’s small town. And so begins a struggle to band together and survive. Future dreams are forced aside by the overwhelming need to survive the present in this winning Scottish musical-horror-comedy.

Anna and the Apocalypse hits theaters on November 30, 2018.

Listen: ‘Hearts Beat Loud’ Releases the Catchy Title Track from the Charming Indie Gem https://briefnews.eu/listen-hearts-beat-loud-releases-the-catchy-title-track-from-the-charming-indie-gem/ https://briefnews.eu/listen-hearts-beat-loud-releases-the-catchy-title-track-from-the-charming-indie-gem/#respond Sat, 02 Jun 2018 21:10:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/listen-hearts-beat-loud-releases-the-catchy-title-track-from-the-charming-indie-gem/ Hearts Beat Loud Soundtrack

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, one of the breakout films was the charming father daughter dramedy Hearts Beat Loud. The film sees Nick Offerman as Frank, a widower preparing to close down his record shop and send his daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) off to med school across the country. In one final attempt to spark a bit more of a connection with his daughter, Frank convinces her to partake in a jam session. Their collaboration results in some outstanding original tunes that get them a surprising amount of attention online. Now you can partake in the buzz by listening to the title track from the film.

Listen to the Hearts Beat Loud Soundtrack Single

This is the first song Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons create together in the movie. It becomes a surprising success when it ends up on an indie playlist on Spotify, and Offerman becomes energized to turn them into a musical sensation called “We’re Not a Band,” inspired by his daughter’s reluctance to participate. You can watch the trailer over here to find out more about the movie.

The title song plays several times throughout Hearts Beat Loud, though not quite as excessively as That Thing You Do! from the movie of the same name. Thankfully, there are a few other original songs written by musician Keegan DeWitt, which are also performed by Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons in the movie, the latter proving that someone needs to cast her in a movie musical as soon as possible.

Here are the rest of the tracks on the soundtrack, including the score, also composed by DeWitt:

1. Hearts Beat Loud – Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons (3:18)
2. Blink (One Million Miles) – Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons (4:07)
3. Everything Must Go – Keegan DeWitt, Nick Offerman & Kiersey Clemons (3:09)
4. Red Hook (2:07)
5. We’re Not a Band (2:14)
6. Shut Your Eyes – Keegan DeWitt & Nick Offerman (2:36)
7. Hearts Beat Loud (Ballad) – Keegan DeWitt & Kiersey Clemons (4:13)
8. Conundrums (1:46)
9. Your Best American Girl – Mitski (3:33)
10. The Past (2:05)
11. Help Wanted (2:11)
12. What If… (2:23)
13. Everything Must Go (Frank Collage) (3:34)

Aside from the incredible tunes, Hearts Beat Loud is also a touching, charming indie that is worth seeing in between all the blockbuster noise this summer. Written and directed by Brett Haley, it’s a great movie for fathers and daughters to see, but it’s the kind of story anyone can enjoy and that soundtrack will have you tapping your toes the whole way through.

In the hip Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook, single dad and record store owner Frank (Nick Offerman) is preparing to send his hard-working daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) off to college, while being forced to close his vintage shop. Hoping to stay connected through their shared musical passions, Frank urges Sam to turn their weekly “jam sesh” into a father-daughter live act. After their first song becomes an Internet breakout, the two embark on a journey of love, growing up and musical discovery.

Hearts Beat Loud starts hitting theaters on June 8, 2018 and the soundtrack will be available the same day.

BBC's In Her Own Words had a catchy final song, what was it? THE SATURDAY BRIEFING https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-in-her-own-words-had-a-catchy-final-song-what-was-it-the-saturday-briefing/ https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-in-her-own-words-had-a-catchy-final-song-what-was-it-the-saturday-briefing/#respond Sat, 07 Apr 2018 19:30:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbcs-in-her-own-words-had-a-catchy-final-song-what-was-it-the-saturday-briefing/

A: Most of the music for that documentary was specially composed by Michael Nyman, but the song played over the end credits was The Movie About Us, composed and sung by Swedish singer Eva Dahlgren.

Q: While watching a football match on TV one of the commentators spoke about bending the ball. This brought to mind my reading a comic (not sure which) around 65 to 70 years ago and one of the stories was about a footballer called Limp Along Leslie who had one leg shorter than the other. He was famous for bending the ball when he took free kicks – this is obviously before David Beckham and other ball benders. Could you confirm if this is right?

A: You’re quite right. Limp Along Leslie (Leslie Thomson) appeared in Hotspur in the 1960s and later in Buddy. Apart from his footballing skills, Leslie was a farmer who reared a champion sheepdog, which made for an unusual side plot.

Q: I believe the “strings” down the flesh of a banana have a name. Please can you help?

A: The string down a banana is called “phloem” or – probably more accurately – a bundle of phloem. They carry nutrients to the fruit while it is growing. The only other thing I know about bananas is that their old scientific name was “musa sapientum” which means “fruit of the wise man”.

Q: Was bread ever rationed during the Second World War, or was it rationed after the war when Labour was in power? Also, which Labour minister said “Britain is an island built on coal, surrounded by fish. Only an organising genius could produce a shortage of both at the same time”?

A: Bread was rationed in the UK from July 21, 1946 (as you say, after the Labour Government came into power). It was not rationed during the war. The quotation you give (but with “made of coal” rather than “built on coal”) was said by Aneurin Bevan at the 1945 Labour Party Conference, which was held after Germany surrendered. And there really was a wartime shortage of both at the time.

Q: In the obituary of the late Bill Maynard in the Daily Express, it went through his showbusiness history. However, I am sure I remember in the 1950s a comedy act called Mick And Montmorency. I am sure Mick was Bill Maynard and Montmorency was, I think, Charlie Drake. Am I right?

A: You’re right about Charlie Drake but Mick was played by Jack Edwardes, whose 6ft 4in height went perfectly with Charlie Drake’s 5ft 1in stature. Charlie Drake and Bill Maynard did, however, co-star in the 1991 TV drama Filipina Dreamgirls.

Bill Maynard and Charlie Drake, incidentally, both started their careers at Butlin’s Holiday Camps: Maynard as a Redcoat and Drake, amazingly enough, as a boxing instructor.

Q: When I was a child, my mother used to say that I was in a brown study. What does this mean?

A: Brown study is a splendid old expression for gloominess. In the 17th and 18th centuries, at much the same time as people started to say they felt blue, the colour brown was used to refer to a rather less miserable state.

Samuel Johnson defined brown study as “gloomy meditations” while Webster’s Dictionary in the US said it was “serious reverie, thoughtful absent-mindedness”.

The OED defines brown study as “A state of mental abstraction or musing”, which is probably what your mother had in mind.

Q: I bought a new Mini Cooper in 1964. How many cars were on the road in Britain then compared today? How does this compare with our increase in population?

A: In 1964, there were about nine million cars on our roads. According to the latest available figures, it is now just under 32 million. The totals for the UK population in the same years are 54 million in 1964 and about 66.5 million now. That’s a 23 per cent increase in people and a 255 per cent increase in cars.

Q: Why is a head butt called a Glasgow Kiss in Scotland and a Kirby Kiss in Liverpool?

A: Both are references to the alleged violence of the areas referred to. The earliest recorded use of the word “kiss” for a head butt was in 1944 when there was a reference to a Liverpool Kiss, which is thought to have been first used by sailors.

The Liverpool Kiss later became a Kirkby Kiss named after a place just outside Liverpool. The earliest known reference to a Glasgow Kiss was in 1982 when a newspaper noted: “Glasgow has its own way of welcoming people… there is a broken bottle gripped in the fist of greeting. Or there’s the Glasgow kiss – a sharp whack on the nose with the forehead.”

Catchy to catch the boys out https://briefnews.eu/catchy-to-catch-the-boys-out/ https://briefnews.eu/catchy-to-catch-the-boys-out/#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2017 08:32:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/catchy-to-catch-the-boys-out/ DAVID Hayes has $ 1.5 million reasons why Catchy is taking on the boys in the Caulfield Guineas and not run against her own sex in the Thousand Guineas on Saturday.

“One race is worth $ 500,000 and the other is $ 2 million. She took on the boys and beat them in the Blue Diamond Stakes and the Danehill Stakes so why not give it a go,” Hayes said.

“Other than the Golden Slipper every time she’s raced against the boys she’s won.”

THE EARLY OIL: CAULFIELD GUINEAS DAY

HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS

ANALYSIS: CAULFIELD GUINEAS

Hayes said they decided on setting Catchy for the Caulfield Guineas sometime ago.

“It’s a bold plan but we made up our mind at the start of the preparation that’s what we would do,” Hayes said.

Hayes said another reason Catchy would take on the boys was that she had already won a Group 1 race. “She’s a Group 1 winner already. A Caulfield Guineas would only enhance her pedigree,” he said.

“To me the only question is whether she can run a mile but she’s a big filly and she’s always finishing off.”

At her last start Catchy finished third in the Thousand Guineas Prelude behind Booker and Shoals, who are contesting the Thousand Guineas.

Catchy, who will be ridden by Mark Zahra, has firmed from $ 5 into $ 4.60 second favourite with TAB Fixed odds.

“I’m confident. She’s never let me down,” he said.

Hayes isn’t concerned that a filly hasn’t won the Caulfield Guineas since Surround in 1976.

Surround then went on to win the Cox Plate at her next start, but Hayes said he would get through the Caulfield Guineas with Catchy before making a decision about whether to take on Winx.

“She’d need to win impressively or have been very unlucky.”

Hayes will be represented by Pure Scot, who ran on to finish fourth in the Edward Manifold Stakes last Saturday, in the Thousand Guineas.

“I’d be more confident if the race was over 1800m. She’d really need the tempo on to be a factor.”

WOOHOO, FINALLY A WINNER

TASMANIAN raider Woohoo shed his maiden status, in the event billed as Victoria’s answer to The Everest, Sportsbet’s The Hotham (1200m) at Ballarat on Thursday.

The event was promoted as the race for Australia’s slowest horses with entry into the field based on how many races a horse had lost.

Prior to the win Woohoo had had 19 starts for three seconds and two thirds and $ 17,635 but the five-year-old mare added $ 27,500 with the victory.

Co-trainer jumps jockey Trent Wells said he was pumped after the win.

“That will cover the Spirit Of Tasmania but maybe not tonight in Ballarat,” Wells said.

‘Sandy Wexler’ Music Video: A Catchy Song Is Wasted on an Adam Sandler Movie https://briefnews.eu/sandy-wexler-music-video-a-catchy-song-is-wasted-on-an-adam-sandler-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/sandy-wexler-music-video-a-catchy-song-is-wasted-on-an-adam-sandler-movie/#respond Thu, 06 Apr 2017 12:07:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sandy-wexler-music-video-a-catchy-song-is-wasted-on-an-adam-sandler-movie/ Sandy Wexler Music Video

Next week brings the release of Adam Sandler‘s latest original movie coming exclusively to Netflix. The film is called Sandy Wexler, and it takes place all the way back in 1994, starring Adam Sandler himself as a goober of a talent agent with a roster of peculiar clients who are from from making it big. But Sandy Wexler’s life changes when he stumbles upon a new face, and more importantly, a new voice.

Sandy Wexler also stars Jennifer Hudson as Courtney Clarke, an aspiring singer who the titular agents takes under his wing and somehow ends up having a fledgling career despite having a complete buffoon for representation. The Netflix original movie is really going for the music side of the movie with at least one original song being produced for the film, and an official Sandy Wexler music video introduces us to the catchy tune. Unfortunately, it’s accompanied by footage from the movie too.

Here’s the Sandy Wexler music video straight from Netflix:

The video has some 1990s flair to it, and the sound actually feels like a blend of the pop music of today and 20 years ago. Helping give the song the right vibe is the fact that it was written and produced by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, complete with a rap verse from Ma$ e, who gets a little too close to “Courtney Clarke” for Sandy’s comfort.

For those paying attention to the footage in the music video, it pretty much gives away the whole story (though it wasn’t that hard to predict how it was going to go anyway). Besides that, the footage includes shots of all of Adam Sandler’s usual cronies making appearances as Sandy Wexler’s weird clients. You know what, maybe just look away and listen to the song, because it’s not bad for a pop tune.

If you dare, watch the Sandy Wexler trailer released not too long ago right here.

This Is Where All of Daft Punk's Impossibly Catchy Samples Come From https://briefnews.eu/this-is-where-all-of-daft-punks-impossibly-catchy-samples-come-from/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-where-all-of-daft-punks-impossibly-catchy-samples-come-from/#respond Mon, 20 Mar 2017 13:58:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-where-all-of-daft-punks-impossibly-catchy-samples-come-from/

Have you ever found yourself listening to some classic 70s funk, rock, or disco and suddenly recognized a portion of the song you swear you’ve heard elsewhere? As YouTube’s Daftworld reveals, it was probably in a Daft Punk track, given the duo’s almost bizarrely impressive ability to turn classic samples into electro hits.

The whole video is eight-and-a-half minutes, so you’ll want to adjust your oversized headset and get comfortable, but seeing where so many of the group’s impossibly catchy hooks actually come from may actually make you appreciate their remixes even more.

Victoria: What does ‘softly, softly, catchy monkey’ mean? https://briefnews.eu/victoria-what-does-softly-softly-catchy-monkey-mean/ https://briefnews.eu/victoria-what-does-softly-softly-catchy-monkey-mean/#respond Tue, 21 Feb 2017 11:36:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/victoria-what-does-softly-softly-catchy-monkey-mean/

In episode seven, Victoria is desperately afraid that she will die during childbirth as her cousin Princess Charlotte did.

She is asked to choose a regent to rule in her place in the event that she dies and the baby survives.

Victoria names Albert as her choice, much to the anger of the Tories.

Albert is heartened and takes an interest in building a new railroad, which Victoria discourages as she worries that he could undermine her rule.

“Power must be seen to come from me,” she tells him.

After experiencing the railway for herself, Victoria gives her permission and agrees that Albert can share some of her duties while she is pregnant, but tells him: “Softly, softly, catchy monkey”.

Many viewers in both the UK and US were confused by the saying, which is an old English proverb meaning “don’t flurry, patience gains the day” – in other words, be patient.

Some accounts trace the phrase back to the founder of the Boy Scouts, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, who picked it up while he was in Ghana.

In his diaries, Lord Baden-Powell wrote: “If it were not for the depressing heat and the urgency of the work, one could sit down and laugh to tears at the absurdity of the thing, but under the circumstances it is a little “wearing.”

“But our motto is the old West Coast proverb: ‘Softly, softly, catchee monkey’.”

The season one finale of Victoria airs in the US as part of PBS’s Masterpiece schedule on Sunday February 19 at 8/9C.

on later this year in the UK.
