Jules and Delores: Caito Ortiz directs this Brazilian heist movie with a fast style and a sprung sense of humor, and it’s fun to watch (if not terribly memorable). The real find here is co-star Taís Araújo, who absolutely steals the show as Dolores, the impatient wife of protagonist Jules (Paulo Tiefenthaler). Exhaustingly sexy and whip-smart, she’s a real go-getter; the scene where she takes over the sale of the stolen world cup at the story’s center is pip, and by the time she struts out to the closing music, you’re wondering how long it’s going to take some smart studio director to bring her to America and make her a star. She’s better than the movie, but the movie’s not half bad.
ON AMAZON PRIME
Fits and Starts: Wyatt Cenac is terrific in the central role of a struggling novelist who finds himself even less confident following the breakout success of his writer wife (Greta Lee, also wonderful), who encourages him to “play the game a little” by accompanying her to an “artist’s salon” in her publisher’s fancy Connecticut home. Complications ensue, and if we don’t always buy them, the charisma of the performers, the quotable dialogue, and the assorted weird behavior more than carries it. The eccentricity of the supporting characters and the grounded central relationship would seem to be at odds, but writer/director Laura Terruso (Hello, My Name is Doris) carries it off; she’s a real talent, and we’d all benefit from a few more Cenac and Lee vehicles.
The Secret Scripture: Rooney Mara and Vanessa Redgrave are outstanding as the younger and older versions of a woman accused of murdering her newborn in this intelligent, staid, yet moving adaptation of Sebastian Barry’s novel from director Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father). The broad strokes aren’t exactly earth-shaking: a love triangle, a forbidden romance, secrets buried and unearthed, etc. But there’s much happening under the surface, and Sheridan’s explorations of trust, war, fear of femininity, and repression in the church bear real fruit. You won’t swallow the final turn for a second, but it’s executed with enough grace and emotion to give this one a pass.
DRIB: Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli helms this slyly dead-on satire of the entertainment industry and buzzword-y marketing trends, which dramatizes the (they say!) true story of comedian/performance artist Amir Asgharnejad’s prankish brush with “selling out” by shilling for an energy drink in a meant-to-go-viral marketing campaign. Borgli’s primary M.O. is uncertainty – he keys in on his subject’s love of discomfort, placing him in awkward situations and letting him (and us) squirm, occasionally breaking the wall to remind us that this is all a reenactment, and one with its own questions of performance and deception. And lurking behind that is the low-key question of if it’s all made up, from top to bottom. The tone is tricky as hell, and Borgli doesn’t always nail it. But when he does, it’s a fascinating piece of work.
Orange Sunshine: Good documentaries don’t just tell you about their subjects – they tell you about the world around them, and place them into that context. So William A. Kirkley’s’s account of the rise and destruction of “The Brotherhood of Eternal Love,” a California collective who become the most powerful LSD distributors of the 1960s, isn’t just about them; Kirkley succinctly lays out the dichotomy of their movement, of leftover ’50s values challenged by a “spiritual revolution,” and how they saw their smuggling and dealing not as a business, but as a religious mission. When the ’60s began, they were freaks and outcasts; by the decade’s end, they were a force that local and federal authorities had to team up to take down. So in some ways, their story was the story of the ’60s, and it’s well told here; the archives are impressive, the interviews are entertaining, and the reenactments are convincing. It takes its subjects seriously (but not too seriously), respecting how much they accomplished their initial goal of changing the way people saw the world, one tab at a time.

California Dreams: Director Mike Ott fuses narrative and documentary techniques to craft this portrait of a handful of would-be actors and writers, desperate to make it big yet trapped in mundane, “normal” lives. The scenes are staged, but the people and their emotions are real, and he both creates and captures moments that are touching, tragic, and offhandedly funny, often by merely hanging with his scenes long enough for unexpected truths to reveal themselves. They display an ear for the rhythms of everyday life (or, more often than not, the lack of rhythm); it’s a truthful film, and an empathetic one. Genuinely peculiar, but wildly successful at the very specific thing it’s trying to do.
Shadow World: This indictment of what is now, perhaps too easily, acknowledged as the military-industrial complex from director John Grimonprez is one of those movies that seems to start simply, with a single subject, yet logically and skillfully pushing past to an ever-widening series of targets. And thus an expose of a war profiteering scandal becomes a meticulous and irrefutable indictment of an entire way of seeing the world – and of accordingly doing business, in government, in the military, in the private sector, and in the increasingly blurred areas between them. Via precise cutting and ingenious archival excavation, Grimonprez paints a terrifying portrait of where we are, and the improbability of turning back anytime soon.
ON HBO GO
Solitary: Inside Red Onion State Prison: Guests of the Red Onion State Prison, a supermax facility in Virginia, are (per their warden) “the worst-behaving offenders in the state,” and they’re treated accordingly: they spend 23 hours per day, seven days a week, in an 8×10 cell, all alone. The general din that fills the facility is the sounds of scary people losing their damn minds – and Kristi Jacobson’s thoughtful documentary asks whether such isolation is ultimately beneficial to either these prisoners or the world around them. It’s not an activist documentary; she does not soft-soap the things these men have done, in and out of prison. But she wants to understand how incarceration and claustrophobia have led them to create their own, skewed sense of reality and gravity, and what the literally inescapable hopelessness of their station has wrought. Her film listens to them, not impassively, but not with prejudice; she puts you into their world, and asks how you would make your way through it.
ON BLU-RAY / AMAZON PRIME
Joe: Olive Films recently upgraded this 1970 sleeper hit from director John G. Avildsen, who went on to direct Rocky – a bit of a shock, since Joe is the mathematical opposite of a feel-good movie. A respectable suburban ad man tries to track down his drug-addicted hippie daughter (Susan Sarandon, in her film debut) in the scuzz of NYC with the help of Joe (Peter Boyle, electrifying), whom he meets in the “American Bar and Grill,” where he loudly makes pronouncements like “42% of all liberals are queer!” and “Why work when you can screw, have babies, and get paid for it?” Between the title character, who may as well wear a MAGA hat, and the film’s original tag line (“Keep America Beautiful”), it’s become an oddly timely film, but its politics aren’t simple; it’s pretty cynical, generally, about everyone. This is a blunt, ugly picture – particularly in its closing passages – but it gets the point across. (Also streaming on Prime Video.) (Includes UK trailer.)
ON BLU-RAY
Manila in the Claws of Light: The week’s sole genuinely “new release” is a Criterion Collection edition of this 1975 portrait of poverty and despair from Philippine director Lino Brocka. He tells the story of Julio, a kid from the sticks who travels to the big city in search of his missing girl, but Brocka works in a neorealist style that focuses on the bleakness of his options and the day-to-day difficulty of a life in which workers scammed and shorted by their own employers, and how their desperation enables exploitation. (Near the end, Julio stumbles across a “down with capitalism” rally, and by then, the movie’s made the argument pretty well). It’s a melodrama with a noir set-up – and, ultimately, a good noir’s sense of nihilism. (Includes two documentaries, interview, and new introduction by Martin Scorsese.)

Hyundai announced a mid-cycle update for the 2018 Sonata in the spring of 2017, but at the time, only the gasoline-powered models were redone. Now, Hyundai has brought the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models up to speed with design changes that align them with their gas brethren.
–
The exterior and interior redesigns are more extensive than is typical for a mid-cycle refresh. Up front, there’s Hyundai’s new grille, which is making its way across the lineup and has already been applied to the new Accent, the Elantra GT hatchback, and the redesigned Santa Fe. The hood and front bumper are reshaped as well, while the lighting elements move higher up in the fascia.
–
The rear is also heavily reworked. Hyundai shifted the license plate from the trunklid to the resculpted bumper and hid the trunk release inside a large Hyundai logo. The taillights have a new design, and the Sonata name is spelled out with large capital letters. The hybrid models separate themselves from the rest of the lineup with a subtly different color scheme on the taillamps, a rear hybrid badge, and special 16- or 17-inch wheels.
–
–
The interior isn’t as changed as the exterior, but Hyundai shifted a few things around and upgraded some of the materials. Hyundai axed the CD player, redesigned the shift knob and HVAC buttons, and tweaked the vents.
–
As on the standard Sonatas, the hybrid and plug-in hybrid have also received a stiffer suspension and retuned power steering. In addition to those chassis changes, safety is a major focus on the new Sonata hybrids. Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist are standard, automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist are available, and adaptive LED headlights are available. Additional tech highlights include a new rear USB port, Qi wireless charging, a hands-free trunk release, memory for the driver’s seat, and adaptive cruise control.
–
–
The powertrains on both the plug-in hybrid and hybrid models remain unchanged. The base for both powertrains is a 2.0-liter inline-four that makes 154 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. On the hybrid, the four-cylinder engine works with a synchronous AC motor good for 51 horsepower, along with a 1.76-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. In total, the system produces a max of 193 horsepower at 6000 rpm, its output delivered via a six-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai estimates the Sonata hybrid will return 39 city mpg, 45 highway mpg, and 42 mpghttps://www.caranddriver.com/photo-gallery/ combined. By comparison, the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid Sonata, the turbocharged 1.6-liter four, is EPA-rated at 28 mpg city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 31 mpg combined.
–
The plug-in hybrid has a beefier electric motor and a battery pack with increased capacity. The PHEV’s motor makes 67 horsepower for a total output of 202 horsepower, and the lithium-ion battery pack can hold up to 9.8 kWh of energy. According to Hyundai, the Sonata PHEV can drive in electric mode for up to 27 miles and will recharge with a Level 2 charger in less than three hours.

The Sonata hybrid will appear in showrooms in the first quarter of 2018; the plug-in model will be available in the second quarter.

It was a jam-packed weekend of high-performance sport around the world, including three Canadians making history with some clutch performances on Sunday.
Here’s a look at what you may have missed.
Canada has it’s first-ever Olympic mixed doubles curling team.
Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris emerged as the last pair standing in Portage la Prairie, Man., outlasting the 17 other teams vying to wear the Maple Leaf in Pyeongchang.
The Winnipeg-born duo avenged their loss to Val Sweeting and Brad Gushue in the Page playoff 1-2 match by taking an 8-6 victory over that same team in Sunday’s final.
Lawes and Morris are no strangers to the pressure that accompanies Olympic competition, having both brought home gold at previous Games, and promised to give it their all in Pyeongchang.
Lawes also becomes the first Canadian curler to represent the country at back-to-back Winter Games, having won gold with the Jennifer Jones rink in Sochi in 2014.
It was a big weekend for Canada’s top cross-country skier. Alex Harvey claimed his first podium result of the season with a bronze on Saturday at the Tour de Ski in Val di Fiemme, Italy.
How do you top that? Well, a second consecutive third-place finish made Harvey the first non-European man to land on the overall podium at the Tour de Ski.
Canada’s bobsleigh team celebrated a new partnership and a personal milestone with gold medals at a World Cup stop in Altenberg, Germany.
Kaillie Humphries and Phylicia George took the top spot on the women’s podium in only their second race together.
“It feels really good and we are happy with the performance. Phylicia and I worked really hard during the Christmas break. To be able to come out and perform, in only Phylicia’s second race, is great,” said Humphries.
“We made big gains today with good pushes and I’m happy with how I drove. We are happy to walk away with the track record and we know there is lots of room to grow.”
In the two-man event, Justin Kripps celebrated his 31st birthday on the top of the podium with teammate Alexander Kopacz.
Mikael Kingsbury won his 11th straight World Cup moguls title with another dominant performance on Saturday in Calgary.
Kingsbury has won gold at each World Cup stop he’s competed in since Jan. 28, 2017, when he settled for silver in Calgary.
On the women’s side, Justine Dufour-Lapointe scored a bronze medal on home snow.
For Canada’s best long track speed skaters, the path to Pyeongchang runs through Calgary’s Olympic Oval.
Qualification spots are up for grabs in several disciplines at the national trials, with Denny Morrison, Vincent de Haitre and Brianne Tutt doing their best to book their tickets to the Winter Games.
Competition resumes Monday with the men’s and women’s 1,000 metres and concludes Tuesday with the men’s 10,000 and women’s 5,000 events.
Canada can take up to 10 men and 10 women to Pyeongchang to compete in long track speed skating. The team will be announced Wednesday in Calgary.

It was a great weekend for both of Canada’s speed skating teams as two short track stars wrapped up World Cup titles in Seoul, while the long track squad picked up four medals in a single day of competition in Stavanger, Norway.
Kim Boutin wins silver at short track World Cup event in Seoul3:14
In the final short track World Cup event of the season, Canada’s new kid on the block, Kim Boutin, wrapped up the season title in the women’s 1,000-metre discipline, thanks to a silver-medal performance on Sunday. That came one day after teammate Marianne St-Gelais secured the 500m crown with a fourth-place result.

Canadian men also landed on the podium this weekend: Charles Hamelin won gold in the men’s 1,500 (his second individual medal on the season) while Samuel Girard took bronze in the 1,000.
Canada’s long track team may have failed to find the podium on Saturday (despite six top-10 finishes), but they rebounded in a big way on Sunday by bringing home a medal in all four events on the day, capturing a gold, two silvers and a bronze.
The gold came in the men’s team sprint, featuring skaters Gilmore Junio, Alex Boisvert-Lacroix, and Vincent De Haitre. That team also won the gold last week in the Netherlands.
Canadian men sprint to gold in Norway2:49
Canada’s Ivanie Blondin took home a silver in the women’s 5,000-metre race, and Ted-Jan Bloemen grabbed a silver of his own in the men’s 10,000.
To round out the big day, the women’s sprint team — Marsha Hudey, Kali Christ and Kaylin Irvine — won bronze. Hudey also added a silver medal in the women’s 500 on Friday.

Fans were expecting the Injustice 2 PC beta to launch today but have since learnt that is in being delayed by NetherRealm.
Having only been announced earlier this week, it was confirmed that the game would in fact be ported over from the PS4 and Xbox One.
It was also confirmed that fans on Steam would get to try before they buy, through the new open beta playtest.
But it was confirmed on the official Injustice 2 Twitter page that fans would be stuck waiting a little longer to try out the new build.
“The PC beta will NOT begin tomorrow. Stay tuned for more information,” the official NetherRealm tweet reads.
Details are still pretty thin on the ground regarding Injustice 2 on the PC, with no concrete information on what features or characters will be included.
It’s expected that everything from consoles will be made available on Steam and Windows PC, although additional features could also be included.
The popular PS4 and Xbox One fighting title will be arriving on Steam later this Autumn, although no release date has been shared.
There isn’t even a Steam page for Injustice 2, so it might be worth fans checking back regularly to find out more.
It should be noted that while the new open beta will only be available on Steam, PC players will be be able to buy Injustice 2 for Windows.
According to the latest reports, QLOC is developing the PC version of the game, which is still getting new DLC characters each month.
It was recently revealed that the Atom will be part of Fighter Pack 3, after the Hellboy DLC is released.
Injustice 2 fans were treated to their first glimpse of Atom using a TV special aired in the US.
The announcement video said Atom will be arriving “soon”, with reports indicating the release date falling in December.
Injustice 2 gameplay footage of the fourth Atom, aka Ryan Choi, showcased what his fighting style will be like.
While in his atomic form, all opponents can see is a slight blue streak flow across the screen as Atom lands fast, dangerous blows.
The footage doesn’t show Atom’s super move, but we’ll hopefully get a glimpse of it ahead of the big DLC launching later this year.
Atom was one of the first superheroes of the Silver Age of comic books and made his debut back in 1961.
NetherRealm director Ed Boon recently commented on the possibility of Injustice 2 coming to Nintendo Switch, commenting that an external team would be needed to handle development.
