The Chinese economy has yet to feel the pain of US trade hostility, but it is slowing dramatically, to the alarm of government officials.
That means the government must once again stare down the Catch-22 of modern Chinese economics. Should it continue to crack down on easy credit and shadow financing to fight the massive debt bubble that’s been building since the global financial crisis, or should it loosen the reins in order to keep the economy growing at about 6.5% regardless of any instability tariffs might bring?See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The 1961 novel written by Joseph Heller is being adapted once again – but this time for television.
As well as starring in the show, George is executive producing and directing parts of the show.
George is joined by Emmy winner Kyle Chandler, Golden Globe winner Hugh Laurie, and Christopher Abbott.
Catch-22 follows the story of US Air force soldier Captain John Yossarian (played by Christopher Abbott) in World War II.
He is struggling to understand why thousands of soldiers want to kill him, while doing everything he can to survive the war.
Yossarian wants to complete his service and leave, but he is stopped by a Catch-22.
He is shocked to learn of a rule that state pilots don’t have to fly if they are certified insane, but the same rule also states that being driven mad by fear is a rational emotion, which means he is sane and able to continue flying.
George plays the role of Scheisskopf, a training commander based at the cadet school in California, while Hugh plays Major de Coverley.
The commander puts his own needs in front of his cadets, and only looks for results from his trainees.
The dark-humoured show maintains the anti-establishment tale that the book also boasts, and explores the “most profound of human fears”.
Speaking about his role, George said: “I’m very excited to be working with Channel 4 to bring the classic Catch-22 to their channel.
“I couldn’t think of a better place to be doing this.”
Channel 4’s Director of Programmes Ian Kats continued: “It’s hard to imagine a work that speaks more directly to the frequently absurd times we live in, and to the growing sense of individual distrust of institutions, than Catch-22.
“David Michôd and Luke Davies have produced a script that crackles with irony, anger and humanity. I’m thrilled that it will be a part of our stellar 2019 drama offer.
Dan Cohen, the President of Worldwide Television licensing at Paramount Pictures added: “We are very excited to be bringing this exceptional new series to the UK through this agreement with Channel 4.
“With an outstanding cast and award-winning creative team, we are confident that this adaptation of ‘Catch-22’ will resonate with a wide international audience.”
Accompanying George in directing is Ellen Kuras of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” fame, and Argo producer Grant Heslove.
Produced for Hulu by Paramount Television, Catch-22 will take a more modern look at the show while retaining its timeless original story.
It will also keep the tragic satire that the novel is best known for.
Catch-22 is set to air on Channel 4 in 2019.
Stop the presses, there’s been a Catch-22 casting shakeup! But as far as shakeups go, this one is fairly pleasant. Kyle Chandler has joined the cast of the Hulu adaptation, taking over a role previously inhabited by producer George Clooney. Clooney, meanwhile, has decided to take on a different part entirely.
Hulu and George Clooney’s adaptation of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 has a new Colonel Cathcart. Friday Night Lights and Bloodline actor Kyle Chandler will take over the part of Cathcart, described as a “squadron’s commanding colonel, who wants to be a general, he keeps raising the number of missions needed to complete a tour of duty. Cathcart has a fear of failure while yearning for success.” This was a part that Clooney was originally going to play himself, but Deadline reports that Clooney will now play a character named Scheisskopf. This is a much smaller part, which will give Clooney more time to focus on directing and producing the limited series.
Catch-22 is based on the acclaimed, satirical Joseph Heller novel about an Air Force pilot’s madcap struggles set against the backdrop of World War II. In addition to Clooney and Chandler, the series stars It Comes At Night‘s Christopher Abbott and House‘s Hugh Laurie. The Hulu adaptation is being written by Luke Davies and David Michôd, with Clooney and producing partner Grant Heslov both producing and directing the series. Here’s the series synopsis.
Based on Joseph Heller’s seminal novel of the same name, Catch-22 is the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian (Christopher Abbott), a US Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy, but rather his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to avoid his military assignments, he’ll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule which specifies that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers which are real and immediate is the process of a rational mind; a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty.
This cast is shaping up nicely. Clooney, Chandler, Abbott and Laurie are all very good actors, and as Catch-22 has a long list of characters, I’m curious to see who else ends up joining the cast.

The cast of Hulu’s Catch-22 is taking shape. House star Hugh Laurie is the latest addition to the TV adaptation of Joseph Heller‘s acclaimed novel, joining a cast that includes George Clooney and Christopher Abbott. More on the Catch-22 cast below.
It’s the Tomorrowland reunion we’ve all been waiting for! Hugh Laurie has climbed aboard the Catch-22 cast, which will reunite him with his Tomorrowland co-star George Clooney. Clooney is also executive producing, alongside Grant Heslov. Laure will play Major de Coverley, a “squadron executive officer on Pianosa air base. A noble, leonine presence, like some Civil War general, de Coverley dances to the beat of his own drum. Regarded with awe by the men. He spends his time pitching horseshoes, listening to jazz on his phonograph, mixing himself martinis, and hiring apartments for the officers in every new city the Americans take.”

This is a pretty stacked cast overall. Abbott always brings an interesting intensity to his roles, Clooney can often be quite good, and Laurie is one of those actors who always delivers, even if the material is lacking. Catch-22 is yet another original series from Hulu, who are doing their best to rival streaming giant Netflix. Hulu already has the highly acclaimed series The Handmaid’s Tale, and this year they debuted the excellent limited series The Looming Tower. Bringing a heavy-hitter like Clooney on board to get Catch-22 off the ground is a smart move, and I hope it pays off.

Just three months after Hulu dropped the axe on Chance, Hugh Laurie is returning to the streaming service for a key role in the six-part limited series Catch-22.
Laurie will play Major de Coverley, a “squadron executive officer on Pianosa air base.
George Clooney‘s Catch-22 adaptation on Hulu just found its lead. Christopher Abbott, who appeared on Girls and in It Comes At Night, will star as main character John Yossarian. More on Abbott’s addition to the Catch-22 Hulu cast below.
Joseph Heller‘s classic satirical novel is being adapted by George Clooney for Hulu. The six-part limited series will likely have a wide ranging cast of characters just like the book, but for now, the series has found its lead. Variety confirms indie actor Christopher Abbott, whose string of credits includes James White, It Comes At Night, A Most Violent Year, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, a recurring role on Girls, and the upcoming Piercing, will star as Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier. Co-director Clooney will also co-star in the role of Col. Cathcart.
Abbott is an excellent actor who makes an impression in all of his roles, but he also tends to play dark, brooding characters. This will give him a chance to stretch himself a bit.
Catch-22 is considered to be Joseph Heller’s masterpiece, a satirical work with anti-war elements that remains relevant to this day. Here’s the book’s synopsis:
Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier, Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy—it is his own army, which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he’s assigned, he’ll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule: a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he makes a formal request to be removed from duty, he is proven sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved.
The novel was previously adapted into a 1970 film from The Graduate director Mike Nichols. Despite Nichols’ best efforts, and a overloaded cast that included Alan Arkin, Art Garfunkel, Charles Grodin, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Martin Sheen, Jon Voight, and Orson Welles, the film was met with a tepid reception. Now, Clooney will attempt to succeed where Nichols failed. Clooney’s producing partner Grant Heslov will also direct a portion of the series. This will be Clooney’s first reoccurring television role since his work on ER, which, coincidentally enough, is now available to stream on Hulu.
Clooney has made some very good films in the past. His Chuck Barris “biopic” Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is highly underrated. And Clooney’s Edward R. Murrow film Goodnight and Good Luck feels even more relevant today than when it came out in 2005. Yet a bulk of Clooney’s directorial efforts have been lackluster. The Ides of March had a great cast and a potentially interesting story, but was flat and dull. No one even remembers his football comedy Leatherheads. The Monuments Men took a great true-story and watered it down. And his most recent film Suburbicon was legitimately terrible. Hopefully Catch-22 will deliver where his recent directorial films have failed.
No premiere date has been set yet for the Catch-22 Hulu series.

So you want to build a PC using AMD’s new Ryzen processors with Vega graphics. You buy a motherboard, processor, some extraordinarily expensive RAM, and all the other bits and pieces you need to construct a PC. Open them all up at home and put them together and… they don’t work.
Then it hits you. The motherboard has an AM4 socket. The processor fits the socket fine, and the chipset is compatible with the new Ryzen 5 2400G, but with a catch: the board needs a firmware update to support this latest processor. Without it, it’ll only support the GPU-less Ryzens and the even older AM4 processors built around AMD’s previous processor architecture, Excavator. While some motherboards support installing firmware updates without a working CPU, many don’t. So you’re faced with an inconvenient predicament: to flash the firmware you need a working CPU, but your CPU will only work if you can flash the firmware first.
This isn’t the first time this kind of situation has occurred. In the past, both Intel and AMD have posed this conundrum. It’s pretty common every time a new processor comes out that works on existing motherboards. In a few months, most motherboards in the channel should have newer firmwares installed in the factory, solving the problem, but right now, buyers are stuck. The usual response from the chip companies is accurate, if unhelpful—”go out and buy the cheapest processor that’s compatible, use it to flash the firmware, and then use the new processor”—and that would work here, too, but it’s hardly a user-friendly response.

George Clooney is set to star in and direct a six-episode adaptation of the Joseph Heller novel Catch-22.
Previously adapted as a 1970 film directed by Mike Nichols, this Paramount Television/Anonymous Content production will be penned by Luke Davies (Lion) and David Michôd (TV’s Animal Kingdom), THR.com reports. The limited series will be shopped to prospective outlets in December.
A subsidiary of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the world’s largest bank, has recently reached deals with seven Chinese state-owned enterprises to convert about 60 billion yuan ($ 8.7 billion) of unpaid loans into equity shares.
A report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) followed. The IMF increased its forecast for China’s GDP growth by 0.3 percentage points to 6.5 percent. The report also warned that “slow progress in addressing corporate debt” posed a risk to the forecast.
China has been trying to dispel such fears, but in our view as previously discussed in This Week in Geopolitics (subscribe here for free), they are warranted.
Here’s why.
A looming debt problem
The news about debt-for-equity swaps and China’s claims to be over the worst of its corporate debt problems all sound good until one remembers this.
In October 2016, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) reported that China’s corporate debt was 121 trillion yuan, roughly 169 percent of China’s GDP.
The IMF also noted the problem wasn’t simply a high rate of growth in Chinese corporate debt since the 2008 financial crisis. It’s the fact that corporate profits have steadily declined since 2009, while the leverage ratio has increased.
One of the obvious side effects of such unrestrained credit growth is a rise in non-performing loans (NPLs). China currently reports NPLs at 1.7 percent of total loans. But we have always taken Chinese statistics with a grain of salt.
We think the true figure was somewhere between 3 and 7 percent.
But the IMF report suggests the number of loans at risk of default is much higher. It estimates that non-performing and special-mention loans have risen above 5 percent. Meanwhile, loans potentially at risk account for 15.5 percent of all commercial bank loans to the corporate sector.
A catch-22
A State Council announcement said the government-backed debt-for-equity program would be launched “under market principles.” The State Council said they will forbid “zombie enterprises” from participating. Only companies facing “temporary difficulties” and with “long-term potential” would be entitled to swaps.
So, let’s take a closer look at some of the companies involved in the program.
BBMG Corporation and Taiyuan Iron & Steel (TISCO) both recently reached agreements with ICBC. BBMG Corporation is a Chinese cement producer and property developer that saw profits fall in 2017 by 17 percent.
Figures for the first half of 2016 look much better, but only because the first half of 2016 was the height of an overheated Chinese property market, which propped up demand for cement. Now that China is taking steps to rein in property prices, BBMG’s prospects are uncertain at best.
Middlebury Career ServicesTISCO is in a far worse position. It finished 2015 in the red, to the tune of 3.36 billion yuan.
The point is that these are not good investments, and if the government was not interfering in the market, many state-owned enterprises in China would fold because they aren’t profitable.
Those investing in the debt of these unprofitable enterprises either have both a high tolerance for risk and an exuberant optimism, or are counting on another kind of political or financial benefit in exchange for their investment.
The propping up of unprofitable state-owned enterprises is a catch-22. If China lets the companies fail, the Communist Party risks its legitimacy and could set off unrest. But not letting the companies fail means continuing to shuffle debt around until the banking system can no longer handle it.
The end result will be much the same in both scenarios.
