One of Stargirl‘s main Season 2 foes should look familiar to dedicated Arrowverse fans.

Nick Tarabay, who recurred on Arrow as Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang, is joining the CW drama in the series-regular role of Eclipso, our sister site Deadline reports. Meanwhile, Jonathan Cake (The Affair) will recur as The Shade.

The arrival of Eclipso and The Shade was foreshadowed in the final moments of Stargirl‘s first season finale. While Cindy found a mysterious diamond shard in The Magician’s storage locker, The Shade was seen materializing inside the ISA lair.

“Eclipso is one of my very favorite villains in the books,” showrunner Geoff Johns told TVLine this summer, “and he’s somebody who in the comics actually killed Beth Chapel and Yolanda Montez — and they never came back, until recently. They were dead before I ever got into comics in the ’90s, but I brought them back at the end of Doomsday Clock. Eclipso is a really interesting character because he embodies darkness and corruption.”

Johns added, “There are more characters and other surprises we haven’t even hinted at yet for Season 2.” Perhaps one of those “surprises” involves Ysa Penarejo (Project Mc²), an actress reportedly set to recur in Season 2 as an “undisclosed DC character.”

Stargirl, which premiered on DC Universe in May with second-run episodes airing on The CW, will return for Season 2 in 2021 as a CW-exclusive series.

“We’re all working incredibly hard on this because we’re so proud of Season 1, and we want Season 2 to be even better,” Johns told TVLine. “That’s our goal, nothing less.”

Saturday Night Live this weekend brought together Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump and Jim Carrey’s Joe Biden, possibly for the last time.

The comedy all stars faced off in SNL‘s parody of the second and final presidential debate, during which Trump assured the American people that he’d have a coronavirus vaccine in a matter of weeks. (“If I get reelected, everyone in America will be on a big, beautiful ventilator,” he boasted.)

Biden, on the other hand, struggled with anger management. He eventually launched into full Clint Eastwood mode, then defended himself against myriad attacks by the incumbent.

“First I’m creepy, then I’m sleepy,” he said. “You say I have dementia, then you say I’m a criminal mastermind.” He also defended himself against baseless accusations that he’s made millions through corrupt business dealings with China, adding, “I live in Delaware, [where] a night out is $ 28… I bought this suit on a train, c’mon!”

The debate also featured an appearance by Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani (played by Kate McKinnon), who made headlines this week for a compromising scene in the new Borat film. Once again, America’s mayor looked to be fondling himself.

“It’s not what it looks like!” Giuliani said. “My microphone was stuck… on my balls.”

Meanwhile, Maya Rudolph ditched her Kamala Harris impression to portray debate moderator Kristen Welker, who Trump mistook for Hoda Kotb, Padma Lakshmi and Mindy Kaling. Upon Biden’s first use of the word “malarkey,” Welker revealed her Biden Bingo card and took a shot.

At the end of the sketch, Rudolph joined Baldwin and Carrey on stage to mark the final debate sketch of the election cycle. “Good luck, America!” she exclaimed.

Fans of Marilyn Monroe, Broadway musicals and thinly veiled sexual baseball metaphors were given a temporary reprieve from all that is 2020 on Wednesday with a special presentation from the cast of NBC’s Smash.

People, in partnership with The Actors Fund, aired a live stream of the short-lived series’ one-night-only concert recorded in New York City on June 8, 2015 — a full two years after Smash wrapped its two-season run. Naturally, this special event was introduced by Renee Zellweger.

To sweeten the pot, 15 cast members — Katharine McPhee, Megan Hilty, Debra Messing, Christian Borle, Jack Davenport, Jeremy Jordan, Andy Mientus, Krysta Rodriguez, Leslie Odom Jr., Will Chase, Wesley Taylor, Brian d’Arcy James, Raza Jaffrey, Jaime Cepero and Ann Harada — reunited on Zoom during intermission for a conversation moderated by Difficult People‘s Julie Klausner. Again, naturally.

Here are a few nuggets we gleaned from the cast’s candid conversation:

* “The original script that I read had a lot of nudity,” McPhee recalled, referring to Smash‘s pre-NBC days; it was initially being developed during Bob Greenblatt’s days at Showtime. Added Messing, “It was sexy. It was definitely a cable show. I remember reading it and thinking, ‘This might be the best pilot script I’ve ever read. For this script, I will move to New York.’ And then we got the watered-down version, and I was like, ‘Where’s the sex?’”

* While discussing the show’s intense choreography, Davenport said he was only ever written one scene in which his character had to demonstrate dance moves for Karen. After seeing how it turned out, the producers realized that “sitting behind a desk and scowling worked better” for Derek.

* While most cast members look back on their Smash days with fondness, the same can’t be said for Cepero, who played infamous Season 1 villain Ellis. “Even today, people will see me on the street and just come up to me and tell me they hate me,” he said. “People tell me that means I did a good job.”

* Jordan admitted that the “hate-watching” aspect of the viewership was “difficult” to deal with, especially as the cast finished filming the end of Season 2. “Unfortunately, that negativity drowned out a lot of the positive stuff we did on the show.”

* Hands down, the thing Borle talks about the most from his time on Smash is “what a good kisser Leslie is.” To that, Odom replied, “I had to bring something to the table, so I brought the ability to kiss.”

Former House doctor Olivia Wilde is bringing together some of the biggest names in fake medicine to pay tribute to the actual hospital workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The closest… I’ve ever come to being a doctor is putting on a costume,” the actress formerly known as Thirteen notes at the start of the epic mashup, before adding tongue-in-cheek, “And while it is close, it is not quite the same. I just want to say thank you to all the real healthcare heroes out there.”

Among the TV vets featured in the video are Wilde’s former House co-stars Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Jennifer Morrison, Kal Pen and Peter Jacobson.

Stand-up comic Iliza Shlesinger has lined up a gig at CBS: She’s set to star in a multi-camera comedy that’s in development at the Eye network, according to our sister site Deadline.

The untitled comedy stars Shlesinger as a young woman who comes back to her hometown of Austin, Texas to help her mom and sister run the family business. Shlesinger will co-write the pilot as well, along with Michelle Nader (2 Broke Girls).

A former winner of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Shlesinger has appeared in a number of Netflix stand-up specials, including this year’s Iliza: Unveiled. She also has a six-episode deal with Netflix for an upcoming sketch show.

* Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries) will executive-produce HBO Max’s The Beach, an adaptation of the YA novel Beach Lane, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Erin Cardillo and Richard Keith (Life Sentence) will pen the pilot, which centers on teens who work at lavish beach estates and clubs in the Hamptons.

* He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is getting a CG-animated reboot at Netflix, per Deadline, which will reimagine the popular ’80s kids’ cartoon for a new audience.

* The CW will rebroadcast “Crisis on Infinite Earths” Parts 1-3 on Monday, Jan. 6, Tuesday, Jan. 7, and Monday, Jan. 13, ahead of the crossover’s final two hours airing Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Riley Keough is ready to rock’n’roll.

The Girlfriend Experience star has signed on to play the titular female singer/songwriter in Amazon’s upcoming series adaptation of Daisy Jones & The Six, our sister site Deadline reports.

The show will be based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s popular 2019 novel about the rise and fall of a fictional 1970s rock band. In the book, Keough’s Daisy is a naturally gifted musician who grew up too fast in the Los Angeles music scene and deals with the repercussions of that as her fame increases. Daisy’s star skyrockets when she teams up with The Six, fronted by Billy Dunne. Daisy and Billy’s working relationship, with all of its pinnacles and pitfalls, makes up most of the novel, which is presented as an oral history that unfolds over several years.

Niki Caro (Anne With an E) will direct several episodes and will executive-produce, alongside Reese Witherspoon, showrunner Will Graham (Mozart in the Jungle) and others.

In addition to leading The Girlfriend Experience‘s first season, Keough’s TV credits include Riverdale and Paterno. She also appeared in the films Mad Max: Fury Road and Magic Mike, among others.

Dina’s dad will soon pay a visit to Cloud 9: Superstore has cast Breaking Bad vet Dean Norris to play the assistant manager’s estranged father, TVLine has learned exclusively.

The character of Howard Fox is described as a “rugged and eccentric” individual who comes back into Dina’s life, ready to make amends for leaving her when she was just a child. The character was recently referenced in the Oct. 24 episode “Self-Care,” when Glenn served as a temporary stand-in for her deadbeat dad. Norris will assume the role in an episode slated to air in January.

Superstore has had no shortage of guest stars in its recently supersized Season 5. In addition to Norris, Cloud 9 has welcomed One Day at a Time‘s Justina Machado as new district manager Maya and SNL‘s Heidi Gardner as Dina’s nemesis Colleen. Filmmaker Ava DuVernay‘s second project for OWN, following Queen Sugar, has found its leads.

Xosha Roquemore (The Mindy Project) and Alano Miller (Underground) are set to headline the inaugural season of Cherish the Day, an anthology that will chronicle the stirring romance of one couple, with each episode spanning a single day. The season-long narrative will unfold to reveal “significant moments in a relationship that compel us to hold true to the ones we love, from the extraordinary to the everyday.”

Roquemore and Miller will respectively play Gently James and Evan Fisher, a couple who meets and falls in love in Los Angeles, with the full season spanning five years across eight episodes.

Tanya Hamilton (Queen Sugar) will direct the Cherish the Day series premiere, which was written by executive producer DuVernay.

Roquemore’s previous TV credits also include I’m Dying Up Here and Black Monday, while Miller has had runs on The Red Line, Jane the Virgin and Halt and Catch Fire.

The upcoming Walking Dead spinoff that will focus on two female protagonists has found the first of its pair of leading ladies: Alexa Mansour has nabbed one of the plum parts, our sister site Variety reports.

The actress, a relative newcomer who has guest-starred on such series as Madam Secretary, How to Get Away With Murder and The Resident, will play a likable rebel whose sense of humor masks an inner sadness. And Mansour isn’t the only cast member who’s been signed to the AMC drama. Nicolas Cantu (who’s appeared on The Good Place) and Hal Cumpston (Bilched) will play, respectively, a karate kid who’s small for his age and a big-for-his-age loner who hates the fact that he scares his peers.

Co-created by Scott Gimple, the franchise’s chief content officer, and Matt Negrete, who’s spent the last five seasons as a Walking Dead writer/producer, the new offshoot will address what it’s like to be part of the first generation to come of age since walkers began roaming the earth. Production on the series’ 10-episode freshman season begins this summer; it’s intended to debut in 2020.
