An American Horror Story fan favorite is returning to the fold.

Frances Conroy, last seen playing both Myrtle and Moira in the FX anthology’s eighth season (AHS: Apocalypse), is rejoining the all-star cast for Season 10, series creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed. “Our beloved Frannie is indeed in this season,” Murphy wrote in response to a fan’s inquiry on Instagram.

Little else has been confirmed about AHS‘ upcoming 10th season, which is currently in production, including its top-secret theme.

Ready for more of today’s newsy nuggets? Well…

* Black Lightning‘s final season has tapped Melissa De Sousa (On Becoming a God in Central Florida, Single Ladies) to recur as Anna Lopez, Freeland’s new chief of police whose views on the metahuman population differ from the late Chief Henderson — in that she sees them as “freaks” and equally as bad as The 100 gang.

* The BBC and Sundance TV have renewed the relationship series The Split for a third and final season, our sister site Deadline reports.

* Amazon Studios has given a series order to an adaptation of Jenny Han’s YA book series The Summer I Turned Pretty, which is described as “a multigenerational drama that hinges on a love triangle between one girl and two brothers, the ever-evolving relationship between mothers and their children, and the enduring power of strong female friendship.” Han will write the pilot, plus showrun the series alongside Gabrielle Stanton (Haven).

* HBO Max has scheduled a Thursday, Feb. 11 binge drop for the acquired UK competition series The Bridge, in which 12 strangers must construct by hand a walkway to a small island where a £100,000 prize awaits just one of them. Watch a trailer:

Death in Paradise: Ralf Little’s replacement ‘unveiled’ as boss speaks on historic casting https://briefnews.eu/death-in-paradise-ralf-littles-replacement-unveiled-as-boss-speaks-on-historic-casting/ https://briefnews.eu/death-in-paradise-ralf-littles-replacement-unveiled-as-boss-speaks-on-historic-casting/#respond Tue, 02 Feb 2021 12:37:11 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/death-in-paradise-ralf-littles-replacement-unveiled-as-boss-speaks-on-historic-casting/

Ralf, 40, was cast in the role as Detective Inspector Neville Parker towards the end of season nine of Death in Paradise after his predecessor and Jack Mooney star Ardal O’Hanlon, 55, quit the show. Since then, viewers of the BBC drama have been divided over the newcomer and whether he was the right person to lead the cast. However, executive producer Tim Key has addressed that one day, it could be a female who takes on the pivotal role in a historic move for the programme.

Since the murder-mystery drama began airing 10 years ago, only male actors have stood in the role of DI, with women being assigned, Detective Sergeant.

Richard Poole star Ben Miller, 54, and Humphrey Goodman actor Kris Marshall, 37, have also led the cast as well as Ralf and Ardal’s characters.

With it likely the former Royle Family star will be replaced at some point in the future, bosses are already putting plans in place as to who could be his successor.

Teasing the historic casting, Tim explained: “Our intention in having the detective solve the crimes [and] it’s to show that that’s sort of the only thing that character can do effectively.

“Because he’s an incredibly broken character, and socially inept,” he said, before adding to The Guardian: “There’s no rule it always has to be a man.”

Following the return of Florence Cassel star Josephine Jobert, 35, many viewers speculated she could be lined up to replace Ralf.

However, the character has made a return for season 10 as the programme marks a decade of being on television.

The likes of former DS Camille Bordey (played by Sara Martins) will also be making an appearance later on in the latest series.

So, could either of these two actresses return in the future in the leading role and take charge of the team on the island of Saint-Marie?

Earlier this year, the actor spoke about whether he has contemplated leaving the show or if his character has a lasting future.

Ralf told Graham Norton, 57, on his Virgin Radio show: “I’ll be back next year but I don’t think I’m signed for the two years.”

It was recently confirmed by the BBC there will be two more seasons at least to enjoy once the current one concludes.

Speaking of the news, executive producer Tim said: “We are hugely proud of series ten and delighted we’ll be heading back to Saint Marie to continue the story.”

“Our amazing cast and crew have delivered against the odds this year and we can’t wait to get going again – we’ve got huge plans for the future, with lots of surprises to come,” he continued.

BBC Commissioning Editor Tommy Bulfin added: “We’re really proud of Death In Paradise.

“And know how popular it is with viewers, offering some much-needed escapism as well as compelling whodunnits and deeply satisfying plot twists.

“We hope audiences enjoy the 10th-anniversary series starting tonight, and they have lots to look forward to with series 11 and 12.”

Death in Paradise airs Thursdays at 9pm on BBC One.

Cue up W.G. Snuffy Walden’s Emmy-winning West Wing theme in your head, because the HBO Max special that reunites the acclaimed drama’s original cast promises to make your Barlet-loving heart salute.

Premiering Thursday, Oct. 15, A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote marks the first time in 17 years that the original cast of the Emmy- and Peabody Award–winning drama has come together — accompanied by series creator Aaron Sorkin and executive producer/director Thomas Schlamme, for a theatrical stage presentation of the “Hartsfield’s Landing” episode from Season 3.

Among the chosen episode’s plotlines, Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman anxiously awaits the 42 votes cast by the titular town in a portentous New Hampshire presidential primary. “It’s about democracy, it’s about the beauty of voting, it’s about living up to your potential and living up to your brilliance,” Richard Schiff, who returns as White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler, tells TVLine. “That’s why it was so special to do this particular episode.”

In addition to Schiff, OG cast members Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Bradley Whitford, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney and Janel Moloney also reprise their respective roles from the episode, while Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) succeeds the late John Spencer as White House chief of staff Leo McGarry.

TVLine spoke with Schiff about the special’s “poignant” timeliness, what about the staging gave him goosebumps, and more.

TVLINE | I don’t think I realized how excited I was for this special until the trailer came out, and I got so emotional watching just those 90 seconds. When’s the last time that anywhere close to this many of you were together in one space?
This many of us? It’s been a while. We’ve been together maybe with this many of us but with different groupings, like Joshua Malina (who played Will  Bailey) instead of Rob [Lowe]. When we were campaigning in ’16 in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, that was a pretty big group with Mary McCormack (who played Kate Harper), and Josh, and Allison, and Brad, and Dule. Other than that, it might have been a party at Allison’s house. And I think Brad had a dinner at his house about five or six years ago, and that was the last time we were all together sitting down.

TVLINE | Is a stage reenactment like this something you would be game for anyway, or did the “Get Out the Vote” cause make it a must do?
Well, it seems like anytime that they ask The West Wing to come together for some reason or another, it’s for political reasons, so it’s not a surprise that this is to help to get out to vote, that that’s our cause. But just to get back together for the sake of getting back together, other casts get to do that and reap millions of dollars from it, but we of course have to do it pro bono because we’re good people. [Laughs]  But that’s what makes it so special, literally special, because there’s a purpose behind it, and it always feels better to do this kind of work for a reason. Otherwise, it’s just kind of self-congratulatory or, you know…

TVLINE | A cash grab?
A cash grab, exactly — which I don’t have a major objection to in principle! [Chuckles] But that doesn’t seem to be who we are.

West Wing Reunion Leo RecastTVLINE | There is one new face in the mix, and while Sterling K. Brown is a fine, fine, Emmy-winning actor, he’s almost a decade younger than John Spencer ever was in the role. Might that change a bit how we perceive Leo in this?
No, because it’s really about gravity. It’s really about the ability to understand, to have the knowledge and the gravity to appreciate each other in the world, and Sterling Brown has that hyperintelligence and gravity that John Spencer had. It’s actually a brilliant choice.

always go back to my acting class in college, when a 20-year-old girl played the mother of another 20-year-old girl, and we were so engrossed in the scene. The master teacher, Earle Gister, who was my mentor, said, “You see, when you believe it, they believe it.” And there was no question that we believed that Kim, who played the mother, was the mother of Otta, who played the daughter, because they believed it. So age never even crossed my mind when Sterling was on set, no.

TVLINE | I’m always fascinated when an actor goes to reprise a role that they haven’t played for like 15, 20 years. Was there something you had to remind yourself about Toby to really lock back onto the character?
You know, Aaron [Sorkin] was so good at capturing or utilizing elements of who we were as people that eventually it filtered into the role, into the character, so Toby was very much made up of Aaron’s mind but my soul and my body, and it’s hard to separate that after doing it for seven years. In fact, when I go off on political stuff — which I would, of course, not be invited to do if I didn’t play the part — it’s very hard for me to create my own persona as opposed to going there as Toby. Of course, that’s what they would rather see — they would rather see Toby give a speech than Richard give a speech — but it’s easy for me to capture his passion, and his depth, and complexity.

West Wing Reunion

TVLINE | One thing I remember fondly about Toby is he could cut you off at the knees and make you feel like the dumbest person in the room with a casual, muttered aside.
Yes, but that comes from, I think, a real disappointment with humanity while maintaining a hope that somehow we can elevate ourselves to reach our potential. I think that’s what the dichotomy was within him, because his desire to cut people down is minimal. It’s something he could do in his sleep, and it’s not the point. The point is, “Why aren’t people on board with what will make this world a better place?” And when people were not on board is when he became a bit more cutting than he otherwise would be, considering this world is not abiding by Toby’s plan.

In those days, think about what [President George W.] Bush was doing to this country with the Invasion of Iraq, and how different we would be had [Al] Gore been allowed to accept his victory in 2000. Think about where we would be with alternative energy, all these things…. Now when you think about that, it’s mind-boggling. It’s mind-boggling that there’s an existential threat to the very existence of this democracy and that someone is succeeding, with a whole lot of help I’m sure, in stealing this country from us. That’s what makes this particular episode [‘Hartsfield’s Landing”] so much more poignant, because it’s about democracy, it’s about the beauty of voting, it’s about living up to your potential and living up to your brilliance, and to not be afraid of that. That’s another reason why it was so special to do this particular episode.

West Wing Reunion PreviewTVLINE | Was there a moment on stage when seeing somebody make a gesture or hearing the timbre of a co-star’s voice gave you goosebumps and sent you back 18 years?
I wouldn’t frame it like that, but yeah. I mean, just being across from Martin again, because all of my stuff was with him and a bit with Dulé. Martin has a very particular rhythm with Bartlet, but it was a combination of things. It was Dulé on the set at one point. And then when we’re rehearsing, there’s Aaron pacing back and forth as if he had just written it last week, and Tommy Schlamme with his intense energy. Tommy has the utmost respect for what actors have to do, so despite his hurried disposition to everything, he always yields to what the actor might need for that moment. So that whole dynamic, that perfect storm of ingredients that made up our soup 20 years ago — that’s a mixed metaphor, but you know what I’m saying — was alive again.

TVLINE | It was swirling around inside that theater.
And that was awesome. That was goosebumps right there.

Joe Exotic Casting Call: Which Actor’s Got the Eye of the Tiger (King)? Vote! https://briefnews.eu/joe-exotic-casting-call-which-actors-got-the-eye-of-the-tiger-king-vote/ https://briefnews.eu/joe-exotic-casting-call-which-actors-got-the-eye-of-the-tiger-king-vote/#respond Mon, 30 Mar 2020 22:10:43 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/joe-exotic-casting-call-which-actors-got-the-eye-of-the-tiger-king-vote/

The runaway success of Netflix’s Tiger King has injected new life into a potential scripted version of the sordid tale, igniting a feeding frenzy around the casting of the titular ringmaster.

At least a half-dozen actors and self-proclaimed Tiger King enthusiasts, including Dax Shepard and Edward Norton, have campaigned for the colorful role. “If I don’t get cast as Joe Exotic in the eventual biopic, Hollywood is broken,” Shepard cracked on Twitter last week, prompting this tongue-in-cheek response from Norton: “Um, step aside, pal. You’re way too young and buff and you know it.”

The pair’s cat-and-mouse game triggered a larger, more serious debate across social media about who would be the purr-fect choice to portray the gun-toting polygamist opposite Kate McKinnon’s Carole Baskin in the potential limited series, which is in active development at Universal Content Productions. Among the other names tossed into the meow mix: Steve Buscemi, Danny McBride, Thomas Lennon and Billy Bob Thornton.

And that barely scratches the surface.

After scanning the Interwebs for other popular suggestions, and folding in a few ideas of out own, we narrowed the field down to the 13 paws-ible contenders in the poll below. Which actor do you believe would be the definitive Joe Exotic?

Now, before you vote, a couple FYIs: The poll closes at tomorrow, March 31, at 6 pm ET. And the results will be kept under wraps until they are revealed on TVLine later this week.

Roswell, New Mexico’s Ortecho Sisters Recall the Story of Their ‘Fated’ Casting — Plus, Watch an Arresting Sneak Peek https://briefnews.eu/roswell-new-mexicos-ortecho-sisters-recall-the-story-of-their-fated-casting-plus-watch-an-arresting-sneak-peek/ https://briefnews.eu/roswell-new-mexicos-ortecho-sisters-recall-the-story-of-their-fated-casting-plus-watch-an-arresting-sneak-peek/#respond Mon, 23 Mar 2020 16:15:42 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/roswell-new-mexicos-ortecho-sisters-recall-the-story-of-their-fated-casting-plus-watch-an-arresting-sneak-peek/

When it comes to casting sisters on TV, there’s good, there’s uncanny and then there’s whatever crazy magic is happening over at Roswell, New Mexico between Jeanine Mason and Amber Midthunder (aka Liz and Rosa Ortecho).

“We actually both had these funny kismet moments of people confusing us for each other long before we met,” Midthunder tells TVLine. “When the pilot was coming out, my parents watched the trailer and took a bunch of screenshots — but when they sent them, they were like, ‘Is this you? Is this you?’ And about three of them were actually Jeanine.”

Mason has her own tales of mistaken identity, including the time she was approached by a stranger in a film festival bathroom who wanted to know if she was “the girl from Legion.” (Spoiler alert: She was not.) “I think it was a whole year after that before I found out Amber would be playing my sister in the pilot,” Mason says. “I was like, ‘Why does that name sound so familiar?’ And then it clicked. This was fated! I’d been hearing her name for years!”

And if you thought the confusion would clear up once Mason and Midthunder began working together, well…

“I think the crew is totally freaked out by how similar our mannerisms are becoming,” Mason says. “Even the way we laugh, or the way we use our hands. I’ll say this: It’s more rare than actors choose to admit that you actually get along with someone in a way where you want to be friends beyond the show. I adore that woman, and I plan to adore her for the rest of my existence.”

Adds executive producer Carina Adly Mackenzie, “They naturally look alike, but they also worked on developing certain sisterly mannerisms. When they’re sharing a bed in the motel [in the Season 2 premiere], they sleep the same way. And later on this season, you’ll see them using the same hand gestures. It’s partially magical and partially them being very good at their jobs.” (Perhaps too good?) “We’ve had notes from the studio and the network being like, ‘Can you just say Rosa’s name a few times in this scene, so people don’t think it’s Liz?’”

Unfortunately, Rosa has a lot more to think about than how much she looks like her sister and what her favorite ’00s celebrities are up to in 2020. (“Did you know that Jimmy from Degrassi is a rapper now?!”) She’s also a bipolar teenager struggling with addiction — and that’s on top of all things extraterrestrial.

“She’s always felt like an outsider, and she’s now totally isolated in her town and in her life,” Midthunder says. “Her sickness almost feels like her friend. It’s consistent, it’s comfortable. There’s a reason any addict falls into addiction — in some way, it’s appealing. The problem is that it’s also extremely destructive. She’s seeing that, but she feels helpless. She tries to be the hero, and when she fails, she doesn’t handle it well.”

Reality TV’s next eligible bachelor could very well be a silver fox. ABC on Monday aired a casting announcement for a new reality dating show that would feature older contestants looking for love later in life.

Here’s the on-air announcement, as captured by Rob Mills, Senior Vice President of Alternative Series, Specials and Late-Night Programming for ABC Entertainment:

As Mills later clarified in a tweet, ABC is looking for applicants over the age of 65.

The announcement directed viewers to an official casting website, which offers a bit more information about the in-development project: “Are you entering your golden years and looking for romance? The Producers of The Bachelor are looking for active and outgoing single men and women in their golden years for a new exciting dating show!”

Of course, this older-skewing dating show isn’t the only Bachelor offshoot on the horizon. Premiering on Monday, April 13 (8/7c), we also have The Bachelor: Listen to Your Heart, in which 20 singles “embark on an incredible journey to find love through music,” according to the official logline. By singing popular songs, both individually and as couples, the contestants will “look to form attractions through the melodies, find and reveal their feelings, and ultimately fall in love.”

The Big Bang Theory: Penny star almost played ‘dark’ character in shock casting shakeup https://briefnews.eu/the-big-bang-theory-penny-star-almost-played-dark-character-in-shock-casting-shakeup/ https://briefnews.eu/the-big-bang-theory-penny-star-almost-played-dark-character-in-shock-casting-shakeup/#respond Fri, 15 Nov 2019 07:09:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-big-bang-theory-penny-star-almost-played-dark-character-in-shock-casting-shakeup/

In a special featurette of The Big Bang Theory released by CBS, the actor revealed she tried out for the show’s original pilot that never aired. However, the star was unsuccessful. She tried out for the role of a character named Katie (Amanda Walsh), who is worlds away from Penny. But who was she?

Katie was reportedly a saleswoman who worked at the cosmetics counter of a local department store.

She was described as “a street-hardened, tough-as-nails woman with a vulnerable interior”.

When speaking about the character, Kaley described Katie as “a dark, brooding unhappy woman”, the very opposite to the cheerful Penny who moved in opposite apartment 4A in episode one.

However, the role went to Amanda Walsh, who is deemed the “pre-Penny female lead” of the successful sitcom.

The role eventually went to Amanda Walsh, who is deemed the “pre-Penny female lead” of the successful sitcom.

However, producer Chuck Lorre reworked the entire show after CBS turned down its original pilot.

The producer branded the pilot “a mess” due to the fact the team “didn’t really understand the characters yet”.

He added: “We had to go through that failure to understand that if a woman was going to be in [Leonard and Sheldon’s] ecosystem, she had to be gentle with them because they were really vulnerable.”

He began: “I knew instantly, and I couldn’t tell you even now exactly what it was, what quality.” explained Jim, referencing their first read of the sperm bank scene.

“But I know how I felt when I read with him which was very free, there was something so independent about what he was doing.

“I don’t know, I don’t know how to explain it.

“I literally felt it from the very first time we read through it together, it was like ‘well this is different’”

The Big Bang Theory: ‘You’d never see anyone like Sheldon’ Director spills casting secrets https://briefnews.eu/the-big-bang-theory-youd-never-see-anyone-like-sheldon-director-spills-casting-secrets/ https://briefnews.eu/the-big-bang-theory-youd-never-see-anyone-like-sheldon-director-spills-casting-secrets/#respond Sun, 25 Aug 2019 23:52:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-big-bang-theory-youd-never-see-anyone-like-sheldon-director-spills-casting-secrets/

The Big Bang Theory ended a few months ago after fans spent the past twelve years getting to know the unique cast.

Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons) was one of the most unique characters of the series, but it was the heartwarming bond between the unlikely couple that intrigued fans.

Fans watched in amusement as Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) fumbled his words when trying to speak to Penny Hofstadter (Kaley Cuoco) in the early seasons, but director Mark Cendrowski has revealed this may be what made the series so successful.

Speaking to TV Insider Mark revealed it was the unique cast and characters that made the show.

The director revealed: “When this show started, these were very unique characters. You’d certainly never seen anyone like Sheldon.

“There’d not been — call them nerds if you want — a show based around these brilliant minds and what they did with comic books.”

However, despite the niche interest of the characters, fans still seemed to find the characters extremely relatable, especially the issues Apartment 4A seemed to have when talking to the opposite sex.

Mark added: “But early on, I could tell when I started talking to people, once the show was on the air, people that were not comic book people, that were maybe a little older, were not nerdy, were not video game players — they still related to these characters. It appealed to everybody.

“You didn’t have to be a nerd or anything specific to have trouble as a guy talking to a girl.

“What Leonard goes through with Penny in the beginning is common for every guy, in one way or another.

“The same thing with every girl and having to deal with males in that way and being asked out and having to deal with dating situations.

“That’s when I knew we really had something special with this cast.”

As well as the show’s “special cast” the sit-com also became popular for it’s numerous famous cameos.

Numerous big names in science made cameos in the show, such as Buzz Aldrin in Howard’s (Simon Helberg) visits to space and the late Stephen Hawking.

However, Penny actress Kaley Cuoco recently revealed who she would like to have seen appear on the CBS hit.

It seems the Penny Hofstadter star is quite the sit-com fan as she revealed she is “obsessed” with Friends star Jennifer Aniston.

In conversation with AOL Entertainment, Kaley revealed her cameo of choice: “Probably Jennifer Aniston.

“I love her so much, she’s also my style icon. I’m obsessed with her, because she’s always so effortless and cool.

“I don’t want to say that it looks like she doesn’t try, because she obviously tries, but she just looks like the coolest chick around.”

The Big Bang Theory season 12 is available on CBS and All4.

Grey’s Anatomy Showrunner Blasts ABC for Casting Sean Spicer on DWTS: ‘I Deeply Abhor This Decision’ https://briefnews.eu/greys-anatomy-showrunner-blasts-abc-for-casting-sean-spicer-on-dwts-i-deeply-abhor-this-decision/ https://briefnews.eu/greys-anatomy-showrunner-blasts-abc-for-casting-sean-spicer-on-dwts-i-deeply-abhor-this-decision/#respond Fri, 23 Aug 2019 12:29:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/greys-anatomy-showrunner-blasts-abc-for-casting-sean-spicer-on-dwts-i-deeply-abhor-this-decision/

Add Krista Vernoff to the list of ABC employees unhappy with the network for climbing into bed with Sean Spicer. The Grey’s Anatomy/Station 19 showrunner ripped into ABC’s Powers That Be for casting the disgraced ex-White House flack on the new season of Dancing With the Stars.

“I deeply abhor this decision by the company I work for and truly love,” Vernoff lamented in a statement posted on Twitter late Thursday. “This man lied daily, to our faces, and made a mockery of our country. This is not cause for celebration or celebrity.”

Vernoff then called on ABC brass — Disney chairman Robert Iger, specifically — to remove drop Spicer from DWTS Season 28. “It’s not too late to change this plan,” she said, before adding, “Please.”

DWTS host Bergeron also took issue with Spicer’s presence on the show, revealing in a lengthy Twitter post on Wednesday that he had hoped Season 28 “would be a joyful respite from our exhausting political climate and free of inevitably divisive bookings from ANY party affiliation.” Though Bergeron had made that suggestion to a DWTS executive producer, “a decision was made to, as we often say in Hollywood, ‘go in a different direction.’”

Bergeron continued, “It is the prerogative of the producers, in partnership with the network, to make whatever decisions they feel are in the best long term interests of the franchise. We can agree to disagree, as we do now, but ultimately it’s their call. I’ll [leave] it to them to answer any further questions about those decisions.”

In response to the backlash, DWTS EP Andrew Llinares told TVLine, “We’ve got a great and diverse cast. We are excited about the season.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Spicer said that he hopes the ABC series will be a “politics-free zone,” regardless of his ties to the Trump administration. “My hope is that at the end of the season, [DWTS host] Tom [Bergeron] looks back on this and realizes what a great example it was of being able to bring people of really diverse backgrounds together to have fun with each other,” Spicer said, “engage in a real civil and respectful way, and maybe show millions of Americans how we can get back to that kind of interaction.”
