  • Moe’s Southwest Grill is cashing in on Chipotle’s struggles.
  • Chipotle’s wobbly queso launch “couldn’t have been better for us,” the fast-casual Mexican chain’s president told Business Insider.
  • Moe’s is further trying to distinguish itself from the competition by beefing up its taco offerings and its to-go business.

As Chipotle struggles to recover following an E. coli scandal more than two years ago, one fast-casual competitor has been quick to cash in on the burrito chain’s struggles.

Moe’s Southwest Grill has topped Harris Poll’s annual EquiTrend Study of fast-casual Mexican ratings for the last two years, following Chipotle’s fall from grace. The chain has been in expansion mode, hitting 700 locations in late 2017 after three years of growth of roughly 10%. In 2017, Moe’s earned nearly $ 716 million in systemwide sales, up from roughly $ 688 million in 2016.

Cigarette prices have increased in Canada over the past two years, but they’ve done so gradually, without any major federal tax hikes, providing a big revenue boost for tobacco companies, an anti-smoking group says.

Hedge funds are cashing in on bitcoin mania — there are now 50 dedicated to cryptocurrencies https://briefnews.eu/hedge-funds-are-cashing-in-on-bitcoin-mania-there-are-now-50-dedicated-to-cryptocurrencies/ https://briefnews.eu/hedge-funds-are-cashing-in-on-bitcoin-mania-there-are-now-50-dedicated-to-cryptocurrencies/#respond Sat, 02 Sep 2017 22:33:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hedge-funds-are-cashing-in-on-bitcoin-mania-there-are-now-50-dedicated-to-cryptocurrencies/ BitcoinReuters/Lucas Jackson

The market for cryptocurrencies is red-hot, and dozens of crypto-focused hedge funds are looking to get in on the action.

Digital currencies, such as Bitcoin, are powered by distributed ledger technology and are not controlled by a centralized authority. The market for such currencies has exploded with over 800 coins on the market with a combined marketcap of $ 166 billion.

Autonomous NEXT, a fintech analytics firm, released a list of 55 cryptocurrency hedge funds on Tuesday, illustrating the mounting interest in the space.

“Like wild mushrooms, crypto hedge funds have been taking root in the volatile and unregulated soil of the crypto economy,” Autonomous NEXT said in a post on their website. “So we went digging, and digging and digging,” the firm added.

Many of the firms sport crypto-themed names such as Ether Capital, an homage to the token powering the ethereum blockchain, and Medici Crypto. 1confirmation is one of the youngest funds on the list. It launched on August 22 and has the backing of tech billionaire and “Shark Tank” star Mark Cuban.

The meteoric rise of digital currencies such as bitcoin, which is up nearly 700% since 2016, and ether, which is up 3,300% over the same period, has drawn the attention of Wall Street. On top of this, the market for initial coin offerings, a fundraising method based on blockchain technology, is exploding with over $ 1.8 billion raised via ICOs since the beginning of the year, according to Autonomous NEXT.

Even traditional hedge funders are paying attention.

“We have seen managers invest in the actual currencies and/or in the ICOs, and soon there will be derivatives as well,” Steve Nadel, a hedge fund attorney, and partner at Seward & Kissel, said in an email sent to Business Insider.

“Cryptocurrencies have garnered a fair amount of interest in the investment management space, primarily because of the returns they have recently shown,” he said.

Here’s the full list of the crypto funds, in alphabetical order:

This sleepy California city was $3 million in debt — now it’s cashing in on the marijuana industry https://briefnews.eu/this-sleepy-california-city-was-3-million-in-debt-now-its-cashing-in-on-the-marijuana-industry/ https://briefnews.eu/this-sleepy-california-city-was-3-million-in-debt-now-its-cashing-in-on-the-marijuana-industry/#respond Mon, 22 May 2017 19:42:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-sleepy-california-city-was-3-million-in-debt-now-its-cashing-in-on-the-marijuana-industry/ adelanto californiaDamian Dovarganes/AP

Adelanto, California, is what’s known as a “drive-through town.” It’s a dusty plot of desert surrounded by Joshua trees and dilapidated factories. Few outsiders stay long.

Now, the sleepy city in San Bernardino County wants to establish itself as a hotbed for large-scale cultivation and innovation in weed.

There are 360 acres zoned for growing medical marijuana in Adelanto (recreational marijuna is newly legal and California has yet to give licenses for growing it). It’s among the first struggling desert cities to turn to weed as a cure for its economic woes, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Aging factories and warehouses are being transformed into cultivation warehouses, cannabis-oil extraction facilities, and a host of other projects that support California’s booming medical marijuana market. Frontier Enterprises, a major home developer in Southern California, broke ground in February on a 30-acre industrial park that will house 21 marijuana cultivators. It’s big enough to fit nine Costo stores and may someday supply California’s massive demand.

Californians spent $ 1.8 billion on medical pot in 2016 — about one-third of the legal market in North America last year, according to Arcview Market Research. The state’s recreational market is expected to roll out in summer 2018, which could send industry revenue sky-high.

California will not start issuing licenses for recreational marijuana cultivation until early next year, but Adelanto wants to get a leg up on the competition — namely, other communities in the Salinas Valley that have experience in agriculture and the right climate for marijuana farming. The city has already approved ordinances allowing medical marijuana cultivation at an industrial scale.

Investors with backgrounds in real estate development and law are migrating to the town in the hopes of striking it rich in legal weed.

Adelanto has struggled to recover since a major employer, the George Air Force Base, closed in 1992. About 40% of the population lives below the poverty line. Many of the 32,000 residents work in an immigration detention center (the largest in the state), as well as nearby jails.

In 2014, Adelanto was in debt for $ 2.6 million. There were talks to disband the city and file for bankruptcy. A year later, the first large marijuana cultivation site sprung up. The deficit is now between $ 500,000 and $ 750,000. The major credits the recovery, in part, to revenue generated from taxes on marijuana cultivation, among other projects that create tax revenue.

In an interview with LA Weekly, Mayor Richard Kerr said he expects pot taxes to inject millions into the city coffers. Those funds may pay for new housing, shops, and a concrete plant.

It remains to be seen if Adelanto can make itself the Silicon Valley of medical marijuana, in spite of competition from neighors including Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs, which have also attracted marijuana cultivators and developers in recent months.

Some residents of Adelanto worry that the new “green rush” will make the city too expensive for them to live in, as marijuana industry development drives up real estate prices.

Former mayor Cari Thomas told the LA Times that marijuana cultivation as a revenue stream for the city is “just not a way I would have chosen. It’s kind of uncharted territory.”

Across America, thousands of Volkswagen diesel owners are relinquishing their keys to dealers in exchange for generous buyback checks. Where will they spend that money? If the whole ordeal hasn’t turned them off to diesels entirely—and that’s a big “if”—General Motors is hoping to divert some of that cash its way, with the rollout of its new, 100 percent EPA-compliant turbo-diesel engine. Melania Trump's sleepy home town cashing in on First Lady SAUSAGES and wine https://briefnews.eu/melania-trumps-sleepy-home-town-cashing-in-on-first-lady-sausages-and-wine/ https://briefnews.eu/melania-trumps-sleepy-home-town-cashing-in-on-first-lady-sausages-and-wine/#respond Sun, 09 Apr 2017 10:46:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/melania-trumps-sleepy-home-town-cashing-in-on-first-lady-sausages-and-wine/

Melania Trump might be the First Lady of the United States but she grew up in the quiet town of Sevnica, Slovenia.

Although now officially an American citizen – as of 2006 – the stunning 46-year-old is proud of her roots and it would seem her hometown is proud of her too.

The tourist trade is cashing in on their famous counterpart, putting her First Lady title on all manner of items to shift them to the abundance of tourists now visiting the town.

From First Lady salami to a tipple of First Lady wine – it’s all going down in Sevnica.

The number of American visitors to Slovenia jumped by 11 percent to 80,000 between January and October last year compared to the same period in 2015, according to the Slovenian Tourism Board.

Sevnica, nestled in the foothills of the Alps, is famed for its wine tasting, embracing outdoor sports and draws in tourists keen to see the river Sava threading through the area.

A pocket-guide to Sevnica reads: “…it would be easy to write off Sevnica as a single-faceted destination, one that makes headlines only for its status as Melania Trump’s hometown.

“However, while there are not many other classic sights in the town centre, the municipality is full of worthwhile things to see and do – especially for those interested in wine tasting.”

The First Lady wine on sale at the town’s 900-year-old castle will set tourists back a meagre €27.90 a bottle.

And a local bakery was selling the Melania cake from December ’16 – cheap at the price of $ 3 a slice.

Sevnica’s mayor, Srečko Ocvirk, spoke to press after Trump was announced as the winner of the elections last year.

He said: “Every American election is important, but this is very special for us

“[The election] created a sense of excitement for us in Sevnica and we have been following developments with interest.”

And Mirjana Jelančič, Melania’s childhood friend, told the local Siol.net news site: “All that they said about her [and] wrote about her was controversial, insulting and that is not the Melania I know because she was a very good girl, wonderful friend, excellent human being and always well intended.

“If this was part of her dream, I am happy that she will succeed.”

The news of Melania’s home town making money from their famous homegrown talent comes after it was revealed the First Lady slightly altered her latest stunning outfit.

Melania turned heads as she posed for pictures on Thursday ahead of a formal dinner with her husband Donald Trump, the Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Madame Peng Liyuan.

But it’s believed FLOTUS had her little red dress made a couple of inches shorter than it comes ‘off the peg’.

How automakers are cashing in on the connected car craze https://briefnews.eu/how-automakers-are-cashing-in-on-the-connected-car-craze/ https://briefnews.eu/how-automakers-are-cashing-in-on-the-connected-car-craze/#respond Sun, 29 Jan 2017 01:15:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-automakers-are-cashing-in-on-the-connected-car-craze/ Leveraging cars' data will bring them into the Internet of Things.

The Internet of Things has created a new market in the automotive industry, which is showing no signs of slowing down. Connected cars and their associated services are expected to grow from $ 13.6 to over $ 42 billion by 2022.

A glimpse of our collective future can be seen in Cadillac’s Book by Cadillac entrance — an on-demand, luxury lifestyle-driven vehicles by subscription. The $ 1,500-a-month car subscription service allows members to swap out different models of high-end sedans and SUVs, beginning in New York in February. It’s the same business model as ClassPass or Netflix, but for the GM-owned Cadillac brand, competing with the likes of Audi’s luxury mobility offering, Audi on Demand.

The open road is calling

Audi and Cadillac have taken the functionality of Zipcar and turned it into a “white glove” service that leverages pre-existing brand affinity that is typical of many luxury buyers. Ford is also on board with FordPass — the first automaker-produced app that can provide services to drivers who don’t own a vehicle from that brand. The app also helps find parking, lock and unlock the car — all great services — but the magic is that it helps build brand affinity even when the customer is away from their car.

Automakers and other industry players are also forming partnerships to offer innovative connected car services. Ford is testing out a peer-to-peer car sharing service named Smart Mobility that allows Ford Motor Credit customers to rent their cars to other drivers. Toyota has partnered with Uber for leasing to drivers, and GM has partnered with Lyft to offer its drivers short-term rentals. GM also acquired a car-sharing app in Europe to help people share their cars, even if it’s not a GM vehicle.

Transportation-as-a-Service (at your service!)

At a high level, this category seeks to address a set of market demands that all say, in one form or another, “I want a different way to get behind the wheel.” More than anything, this is a reflection of a millennial ethos that sees less value in the instantly depreciating “investment” of a traditional car purchase. This demand is especially acute among urbanites who simply don’t need or want a car full time.

Adults between the ages of 21 and 34 bought just 27 percent of all new vehicles sold in America in 2010, down from the peak of 38 percent in 1985. The massive success of Zipcar is the most obvious realization of this attitude.

How will the auto industry cash in?

Whether it is ride sharing, location services, apps, telematics, Wi-Fi, or Internet radio, all these services need flexible billing options to support subscription- and consumption-based models.

For the industry to fully capitalize on connected car services, they will have to revisit their processes to support their monetization. The industry’s major technical infrastructure has relied entirely on a one-time sales revenue model for the last 110 years. Pricing was set to coincide with leisurely two-year development cycles. Today, models and development cycles are being sped up. Automakers often don’t have the back-office capability to handle selling, billing, and provisioning on-demand products and services outside the dealer network and with a recurring revenue and customer lifetime value model. If they are to succeed, they need to prepare their billing and accounting systems and practices today, not after the next launch or acquisition.

Automakers must accelerate their paradigm shift

Connected services will be part of the deal, but cashing in is going to take a fundamental shift in how automakers think about selling cars, too. What is thought of as “loyalty” now — building and selling a car and hoping that it’s good enough that the customer will buy another one in 5-7 years — has to evolve into building strong and lasting brand affinity.

Instead of building the car, they need to focus on the brand and its relationship to the customer. It can no longer be just point-of-sale, it has to be constantly nurtured to develop a permanence. That is going to take a direct line of sight to the customer that cannot be maintained with the current dealer-driven sales structure. Achieving brand affinity is going to be relatively easy for makers of luxury vehicles and work vehicles, where it tends to already exist, but is going to be much harder for low-to-mid-market makers of passenger vehicles where they risk being commoditized. In these cases, the consumer’s affinity and relationship are far more likely to reside with the provider of the service that puts them behind the wheel (think Zipcar, Enterprise CarShare, even Uber and Lyft) rather than the manufacturer of the vehicle itself.

Automakers, their dealer networks and the wholesale model all rely upon long-standing traditions and agreements. Today’s customers are used to self-service, to doing their own research and making purchases on their own terms. To these consumers, the dealership model is archaic, painful, and unnecessary. The industry needs to steel itself for massive culture change where the dealership becomes part of the relationship, instead of the entire relationship.
