Cary Joji Fukunaga will soon be bringing his considerable talents to Bond 25, having replaced previous director Danny Boyle. While Bond 25 is still very much in development, rumors regarding the plot have already sprung up. Rumors that Fukunaga has no problem shooting down. But while the specifics of Bond 25 are still a secret, Fukunaga has confirmed that the film will still be following the arc that started with Casino Royale.
If you thought that Bond 25 might attempt to start things fresh, think again. According to director Cary Joji Fukunaga, the latest adventure of 007 will be very much in-line with the story that began in Casino Royale. During an interview with Inquirer.net, the Bond helmer offered some vague insight into how the story is being approached:
“In terms of what I can bring to change the character, Bond is on a character arc that started with ‘Casino Royale,’ and I will be carrying that on. There will be changes, I am sure. As in any story, a character has to change in order [to have] a narrative.”
What arc is Fukunaga talking about here, though? Bond’s continued learning curve? Or his regret over the death of Vesper? Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace both complemented each other – they felt like they were telling similar stories. But Skyfall changed things up. Bond no longer seemed new to the job – he was older, more haggard, more tired. And then came Spectre, which…well, I don’t even know what that movie was doing, because it wasn’t very good. I suppose the big takeaway here is that Fukunaga is confirming he’s not going to change things drastically. In other words, don’t expect Bond 25 to feel like a reboot.
Also: don’t believe everything you read online. There have been rumors that neither master villain Blofeld (played by Christoph Waltz in Spectre) and gadget nerd Q (Ben Whishaw) would return for the next installment. But according to Fukunaga, no one can know that for sure:
“Who is saying those rumors? We haven’t finished the screenplay, so there is no way that anyone could know that. Those are two extraordinary actors, so if there is space for them in the story, I would absolutely want them there. But I don’t know yet what it’s going to be.”
Waltz has said in the past that he’s not coming back, but that was before Fukunaga came on board. Things change, so don’t count him out yet.
Bond 25 opens on February 14, 2020.

Best known for True Detective and Netflix’s Maniac, the 41-year-old filmmaker is far from a “safe choice” by James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli in terms of style.
Whatever Fukunaga and Craig are planning for the actor’s fifth and final outing, you can be pretty sure it won’t be your standard 007 adventure.
Craig clearly wants to go out with a bang, and originally hiring Boyle shows that.
But now with Fukunaga in the director’s chair, is there any inkling of what he’s planning for Bond 25?
Well, the filmmaker has recently given an interview with IndieWire in which he wouldn’t reveal his favourite Bond film but did admit that Sir Roger Moore’s A View To A Kill was the first movie he ever saw.
The director said: “I don’t think you can pick one though because every single one of them has brought their thing to it and it’s nice to have that difference, it’s nice to have the change of the character over time.”
Whatever his method for Bond 25, Fukunaga said can’t wait to explore and play with the franchise’s established genre.
Fukunaga said: “Over the years, you’ve seen a lot of different iterations not only of Bond but of films that have mimicked it or copied it.
“So I think the exciting part actually is going to the original source and being able to play in a sandbox.
“Genres come with tropes and expectations and in the post-modern era, you can deliver exactly what’s expected of the genre, or you can try to twist it in an intelligent way which subverts the genre but still stays faithful to it.”

The filmmaker added: “So, when you’re drawing from a certain style, you can play with audience expectations while still surprising them — and the nature of creativity is that limitations are often times good things, because when you’re facing the overwhelming vastness of creative potential, to have defined routes to take for a story or style are helpful in determining how far you want to veer from it.”
Fukunaga will start shooting the latest 007 outing with Craig from March 2019 at Pinewood Studios.
Bond 25 will be released in cinemas on February 14, 2020.

Leonard Bernstein, famous for composing the music for West Side Story and for being the only lyric anyone can remember from R.E.M.’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)”, is getting a biopic courtesy of Cary Fukunaga. Now, it looks like Fukunaga has found his leading man: Jake Gyllenhaal.
Jake Gyllenhaal is coming for that Oscar, so you better watch out. The actor has joined Cary Fukunaga’s new Leonard Bernstein biopic – a part that will likely offer Gyllenhaal the chance to rack up awards galore. Bernstein was an acclaimed composer, musician and conductor, responsible for the music of West Side Story, among other things. Bernstein was an outspoken figure, and often drew controversy for his political and personal opinions, including speaking out agains the Vietnam War. Fukunaga’s biopic will chronicle Bernstein’s rise to fame, and also his personal life – while the composer married Chilean-born American actress Felicia Cohn Montealegre, Bernstein was reportedly gay. Bernstein’s West Side Story collaborator Arthur Laurents once said that Bernstein was “a gay man who got married. He wasn’t conflicted about it at all. He was just gay.”
“Like many people, Leonard Bernstein found his way into my life and heart through West Side Story when I was a kid,” Gyllenhaal said (via The Playlist) “But as I got older and started to learn about the scope of his work, I began to understand the extent of his unparalleled contribution and the debt of gratitude modern American culture owes him. As a man, Bernstein was a fascinating figure—full of genius and contradiction—and it will be an incredible honor to tell his story with a talent and friend like Cary.”
Fukunaga added: “Bernstein’s artistic passions changed the way generations understood and appreciated music. It’s been wonderful collaborating with Michael and Jake on Bernstein’s story as we endeavor to capture both the iconic person and artist. Jake is the perfect partner to help bring this story to life and to play this legend.”
Gyllenhaal is a phenomenal actor who somehow always gets overlooked come award season (hey, Academy, where the hell was that Oscar nom for Nightcrawler?). Taking on this part seems to all but guarantee awards committees will pay attention – they love biopics, after all. Cary Fukunaga is an excellent filmmaker who doesn’t work nearly as much as he should, and I’m very interested to see what he does with this material.
Interestingly enough, this is one of two possible Leonard Bernstein biopics in the works. Steven Spielberg recently held a table read for a secret project that was reported to be “an untitled biopic on iconic composer Leonard Bernstein.” Spielberg is also making a remake of West Side Story, which, of course, features Bernstein’s music. Whether or not Spielberg will go ahead with his Leonard Bernstein biopic now remains to be seen.

In the months leading up to the release of It, movie fans were rightfully skeptical of the long-gestating Stephen King adaptation. After all, this was the production that original director Cary Fukunaga departed after four years of development. This was the movie he left behind after citing creative interference from the studio. That was a bad sign. A sign that we were getting something cheap and watered down.
So the revelation that It is very good and very scary and very true to the voices of both King and new director Andy Muschietti was a welcome surprise (especially in the wake of the disastrous The Dark Tower). But with It shattering box office records, we can’t help but wonder what Fukunaga’s version would have been like and how it would have differed from the movie playing in theaters right now. A video series, produced over the past few months and recently completed, offers an interesting dissection of the film’s earliest drafts, which promise a movie that is simultaneously very similar and completely different than what we got.
A few years ago, Fukunaga was riding high on the success of the occult-tinged True Detective season 1 and the bleak and powerful Beasts of No Nation. The thought of him turning his unforgiving eye on one of Stephen King’s most terrifying (and lengthy) novels was a dream come true. And then he left the project shortly before production was set to begin, blaming the studio for apparently demanding a less personal and more boilerplate movie.
The first entry in this video series, created by LowRes Wünderbred, is a nice recap of those events, should you need a reminder. Remember when Ben Mendelsohn was sought for Pennywise? Weird times.
The stuff that you’ll really want to learn about comes in the next two videos, which break down the 2014 and 2015 drafts of It, written by Fukunaga and Chase Palmer. While Jacob Knight over at Birth Movies Death was a big fan of the 2014 draft and, writing about it earlier this year, pondered if we had lost a great American horror movie, this video is a bit more unforgiving. Having not read the script myself, I’m fascinated to hear such wildly different responses. If anything, this polarizing reaction paints a picture of what could have been going on behind-the-scenes of this movie.
Interestingly, the 2015 draft, which eliminates a main character and radically alters massive portions of the source text, earns high marks in the third video. This draft combines Richie Tozier and Stanley Uris into one character and that’s the least of the departures it makes from King’s tome. The obvious comparison is The Shining, a horror masterpiece that has almost no regard for its source material. If this was the version that got made, I imagine King fans would be having heated conversations in comments sections about the various departures.
One thing is clear, though: Cary Fukunaga was not planning to make Stephen King’s It – he was planning to make Cary Fukunaga’s It. And it could have been great. It could have been something really special. And to be perfectly honest, it probably wouldn’t have opened to $ 123 million at the box office. I love Andy Muschietti’s take on the material, but there’s no denying that it’s a crowd pleasing, mainstream horror movie, albeit one that actually takes the time to slow down and let us get to know and love its characters before it torments them.
That makes the final video in the series, released just days before It hit theaters, feel a little unfair. This final chapter is unkind to the revisions made by screenwriter Gary Dauberman, who reworked Fukunaga and Palmer’s script. Considering that Dauberman had a big hand in making the final movie as good as it is (he’s currently penning the sequel), this is probably the one video in this series you can pass over unless you want all of the nitty-gritty details.
While I’m very happy with It (and the /Film staff is enamored with it so much that we’ve already fan-cast the sequel), I’ll still always wonder what Fukunaga would have done with his version. Some of the scenes described in the videos above are evocative and terrifying and exist entirely outside the realm of King’s work. A scene set in colonial New England, where a mother allows It (appearing in an early, unperfected version of its human form) to devour her daughter in exchange for her safety is a macabre echo of the modern citizens of Derry, Maine, who turn a blind eye as their children turn up missing. Since the sequel will reportedly feature flashbacks throughout Derry’s history, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this scene make a comeback in the next movie.
Interestingly, both Fukunaga drafts maintain the more cosmic elements of the novel, even revealing It’s true form and origin. However, we already know that Muschietti is planning to get pretty wild with the sequel. Perhaps we’ll see these scenes, and more of Fukunaga and Palmer’s other concepts, leak into Chapter Two.
