Carsharing service Car2Go is coming to Chicago July 25th. Residents of the big city can register for free now, and new members will get a $ 15 credit for doing so. This brings the total number of cities that Car2Go is active in to 24.
The service offers a “free-float” model, enabling users to make one-way trips without having to return the vehicle to the same place they picked it up, like other carsharing services do. The per-trip rental covers fuel, parking, insurance and maintenance and you won’t have to deal with surge pricing. Getaround
Car-sharing service Getaround announced Thursday that it raised $ 45 million in a funding round led by VC firm Braemar Energy Ventures.
Toyota, Shanghai Automotive’s venture capital investment arm, and SAIC capital also participated in the Series C round.
Getaround allows car owners to rent out their vehicles when they’re not in use. Those interested can rent anything from a Mini Cooper to a Tesla, with prices starting at $ 5 an hour. It’s available in 13 cities across the United States.
Uber partnered with Getaround in April, allowing people who don’t own a car to still sign up as an Uber driver. Uber covers the cost of a first rental for up to 14 hours. Afterwards, the $ 5 hourly flat fee covers insurance, gas, and mileage.
The service also has a partnership with Mercedes that knocks $ 500 off a Mercedes GLA or CLA lease if it’s put on the Getaround platform.
Getaround’s latest funding round comes at a time where major automakers are preparing for a decline in car ownership that will be influenced by a rise in ride-hailing services and eventual autonomous vehicles.
BMW has a car-sharing service called ReachNow, as does Ford with GoDrive. Zipcar, one of the first car-sharing options that was founded in 2000, has received a $ 10 million investment from Toyota.
General Motors has also expanded its car-sharing service Maven, first launched in January 2016, is currently available in 17 cities in the US and Canada.

Originally, Chinese automaker Geely planned to launch its new car-sharing Lynk & Co brand in late 2018, but those plans are changing. The new schedule calls for the brand to be set up in Europe and in the US in 2019, starting with Berlin and San Francisco.
According to Automotive News, Berlin and San Francisco were chosen as key cities due to car sharing already being established there. “Because Lynk & Co will be the first brand to offer its owners the possibility to share their cars when they are not used, we are starting from cities with a high penetration of shared-economy services,” says Alain Visser, the company’s senior vice president of marketing and sales, according to comments reported by AN.
Lynk & Co will initially focus on China sales, as that’s where the partially Volvo-based vehicles will be manufactured. The 01 crossover will lead the way by late 2017, and it will be followed by the still-mysterious 02 in the summer of 2018. Recently, photos were leaked of a concept sedan that might hint of the 02’s styling, but Lynk & Co representatives said it was merely designed to showcase the potential of the platform. As for the third model, the 03 compact concept was unveiled in Shanghai this week, and it is planned to reach production by the end of 2018.
Visser told Automotive News that from 2020 on, Lynk & Co is expected to sell 500,000 vehicles globally, with narrowly more than half of those sales made in China, and the rest consisting of combined European and US sales. Those will be boosted by free connectivity solutions and what the brand calls lifetime warranties.

General Motors is making monthly rentals part of its Maven car-sharing program. Starting now in San Francisco and Los Angeles, members of the app-based mobility service can book a Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid or a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV for 28-day blocks of time. Soon, GM plans to roll out this long-term rental service, called Maven Reserve, in more markets.
–
The year-old mobility brand is more closely associated with hourly and daily rentals in the 17 cities in which it operates. Maven’s data showed that users in San Francisco and Los Angeles often need longer-term rentals for short-term stays in those areas associated with work.
–
“The service was developed initially for entertainment and entrepreneurial communities seeking frictionless, on-demand transportation options and longer-term access to vehicles,” a Maven spokesperson said. “It’s a huge opportunity for us and comes from listening to our customers.”
–

–
Users will pay $ 1100 per month for the Volt and $ 1500 per month for the Tahoe, and those prices come with a $ 100 gas card, insurance, and dedicated parking spots.
–
Those prices are on par with costs for rental cars in these two areas, but the legacy car-rental firms don’t include the same perks. For two examples, a cursory search for 28-day rentals from traditional car-rental companies shows Hertz charging $ 1483 for a Toyota 4Runner or similar SUV in Los Angeles and Dollar asking $ 1334 for a month in a Chevrolet Spark in San Francisco.
–
The advent of ride-sharing services and the blurring of lines between car sharing and traditional car rentals has taken a toll on companies like Hertz and Avis. The stock price of Hertz Global Holdings has plummeted more than 78 percent over the past three years. In the same period, the stock price of Avis Budget Group has fallen 29.5 percent. Maven’s push into a longer-term rental space will likely further squeeze traditional rental companies.

The announcement marks the latest expansion of Maven’s business. Last month, the brand added the new, all-electric Chevy Bolts to its lineup in certain cities, including Los Angeles, where executives say average membership has grown 56 percent in each of the months since its October 2016 launch in that location. Bolts are soon slated to arrive in the San Diego and an Francisco Maven fleets. But you can’t get a Bolt for a month—at least, not yet. New Yorkers, meanwhile, might be interested in the similar but unrelated “Book by Cadillac” service; it has nothing to do with Maven, but allows usage of a variety of Cadillacs for a flat $ 1500 a month.

Peugeot-Citroen parent PSA Group hasn’t officially operated in the US in more than two decades, so let’s just say its reentry to the States appears to be a fairly innocuous one. PSA said that it has partnered with France-based insurance company MAIF to invest about $ 16 million in car-sharing service TravelCar. The car-sharing service has operated in France since 2012 and will debut US operations when it starts working out of Los Angeles and San Francisco airports in April.
TravelCar is different from other car-sharing services such as ZipCar in that it rents out other people’s cars. It’s that detail that makes MAIF an interesting partner, as it provides insurance services in case those cars get munched. TravelCar offers free parking at airports to those willing to let their vehicles be rented out while they’re traveling. In turn, TravelCar says its car-rental rates are about half that of typical rental-car places. TravelCar operates in 10 European countries and says it has about 300,000 users.
PSA says the investment is the first step in a 10-year plan in what it calls its “progressive entry” into North America. No other details about that re-entry process have been revealed. The investment is a little less splashy than the recent news that has surfaced about PSA potentially acquiring General Motors’ European divisions Opel and Vauxhall.
PSA, which was founded in 1976 (though Peugeot has been making cars since the 19th century), also said last month that it’s providing eight electric vehicles to a Paris commercial vehicle-sharing program as part of a one-year trial geared to analyze ways to cut urban pollution.

You hear a lot these days about “car sharing,” the vehicle-usage model that allows people in a network to borrow cars as they need them. It’s the part of the post-ownership society that sounds most to me like a psychological substitution for wife swapping. But car sharing promises to increase per-vehicle efficiency, as the typical car or truck spends around 95 percent of its life just sitting around. READ MORE ››

Thirteen months after its inception, Maven, the car-sharing brand launched by General Motors, has added a vehicle to its lineup that could soon become the centerpiece of its operations: the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle. It recently joined the brand’s Los Angeles fleet, a deployment designed to accelerate Maven’s business in one of the country’s most green-friendly markets. It’s unclear how many Bolts will be available immediately, but GM plans to add more than 100 eventually in the greater Los Angeles region.
–
In a city where car culture still holds sway, Maven’s car-sharing service has been embraced quickly by many residents. Since launching in October 2016, the Maven City program in Los Angeles has seen average membership growth of 56 percent each month. In addition to customer demand, the Bolts complement the city government’s stated desires to promote electric vehicles and new mobility choices.
–
Since the city began implementing its “pLAn” in April 2015, officials say they’ve installed more than 1000 publicly available electric-vehicle charging stations. General Motors says it is working with infrastructure providers to help continue to build the charging network. For a limited time, Maven members will have access to free charging in the EVgo Freedom Station network throughout California.
–

–
The plug-in Chevy Volt has already been part of Maven’s fleet of more than 60 cars in the Los Angeles area. With the Bolt, which offers an EPA-estimated range of 238 miles, prospective Maven members gain more assurance the car won’t run out of power while they navigate the city’s notoriously traffic-choked roads. That’s key because the average Maven user keeps the car more than 12 hours, and the average distance driven is 121 miles, according to a GM spokesperson.
–
Maven provides vehicles for Lyft’s Express Drive program, which gives the ride-hailing service’s drivers access to weekly rentals of GM vehicles in select cities, including Los Angeles. Once the Bolts are fully deployed in the city, GM says they could provide up to 250,000 all-electric driving miles per month.
–
General Motors made a high-profile investment of $ 500 million in Lyft in January 2016, and that investment is a central part of the company’s plan to roll out Chevy Bolts used for ride-hailing purposes. Eventually, those plans include autonomous Chevy Bolts. The company also sees Maven as a central component of its broader efforts to appeal to urban residents searching for more seamless ways to move about their cities.

“Starting in Los Angeles, Maven will focus on collaborating with cities and municipalities to co-create smart transportation solutions that enhance mobility, create jobs and ease parking and congestion,” said Julia Steyn, vice president of General Motors Urban Mobility and Maven.
–
Beyond Los Angeles, Maven officials are already planning stages to bring the Bolts to San Diego and San Francisco. Maven operates in 17 cities in the United States and Canada and intends continued expansion to more markets.
