Android Auto Wireless promises to make vehicle smartphone connections less of a futz, provided you have both a phone and infotainment system that supports it. Google is handling the first part, and Pioneer just announced that it has joined JVCKenwood in offering in-dash receivers with the tech. The three models (the AVIC-W8400NEX, -W6400NEX and -W4400NEX) are the first that can connect over wireless or USB to both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Pioneer claims.

The receivers support Google Assistant and Siri, letting you do things like control your home lights, garage doors and thermostat from your car. They’re also “the most feature packed receivers offered by Pioneer,” the company notes, supporting back up cameras, navigation (via Here maps) and other features.

To use the Wireless Android Auto feature, you’ll need to have a Google Pixel, Pixel 2, Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P for now. Once Android P rolls out widely, though, the feature will be supported on compatible Android devices from Samsung, LG and other companies.

The main differences between the models are the screen size and type of touch, with the AVIC-W8400NEX and W6400NEX packing 7- and 6.2-inch capacitive displays, and the W4400NEX carrying a 7-inch resistive touch model. They’re now available with suggested retail prices of $ 1,200, $ 800, and $ 700, respectively.

Toyota has slowly been entering the modern era with full smartphone integration in its cars, and now it’s time for the company’s upscale Lexus badge. Lexus has revealed that the 2019 ES sedan is its first-ever vehicle to support Apple CarPlay, giving iPhone owners familiar apps and Siri while they ride in style. There’s still no Android Auto support, sadly, but you do get Alexa voice control both in and outside of the car.

The ES is a tech-laden car even if you don’t care for voice assistants. The standard model includes an 8-inch center display, but you can spring for a navigation package that gives you an ultra-wide 12.3-inch screen and a mobile Verizon hotspot. Every variant comes with an updated pre-collision detection system that can detect cyclists. And this being a Toyota brand, there’s naturally a hybrid variant — the ordinary V6-equipped ES 350 is joined by a hybrid ES 300h whose updated electric motor is better at mimicking the power delivery of a gas engine. You shouldn’t see as much of an obvious change when the electric motor kicks in.

Lexus hasn’t divulged pricing for the new ES (the 2018 model starts at $ 38,335), but it should reach dealerships in September. We’d expect CarPlay to reach other Lexus vehicles as the 2019 model year arrives. As with the earlier Toyota announcements, this iPhone tie-in isn’t likely to reel you in by itself. Rather, it’s that you no longer have to rule out a Lexus if CarPlay is a must-have.

Today, WhatsApp introduced a new app update that adds compatibility with Carplay. The additional functionality was first noted on the Dutch site iCulture, and it’s automatically available who those who update to version 2.18.20 of the app.

WhatsApp users who have a vehicle that is CarPlay enabled can now see unread messages, ask Siri to read them messages and use the voice assistant to send new messages. Users will also receive notifications of new messages with the name of the sender. The ability to scroll through a list of messages is not available, however.

It’s worth noting that this is the first third-party messaging app to work with CarPlay, but its functionality is pretty limited. Apple puts heavy restrictions in place on what developers can and can’t do with CarPlay apps, so until it allows more flexibility, this is likely as good as it will get. WhatsApp has been available in Android Auto for some time; with this new development, hopefully we will see more messaging apps on CarPlay.

BMW will turn Apple CarPlay into a subscription service beginning with its 2019-model-year vehicles.

The German automaker currently charges a one-time $ 300 to add Apple CarPlay capability to navigation-equipped BMW models. Going forward, though, navigation-equipped BMWs will come with CarPlay at no charge for one year. Following that first year, customers will need to pay an annual fee of $ 80 to maintain the relationship between their Apple device and their BMW’s infotainment system.

BMWs currently are not compatible with Android Auto, although the company did announce its plans to integrate Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa services into its vehicles. A BMW spokesperson was unable to confirm whether the company plans to use a subscription-based model for using these services in their vehicles.

Regardless, BMW’s decision to charge a yearly fee for CarPlay is contrary to industry norms, as all other automakers include the service as a standard or optional feature that spans the life of the vehicle, similar to a sunroof or AM/FM radio. We’ll see if other manufacturers follow BMW’s lead in the future or whether the market will force the automaker to fall back into line and provide it at no extra cost.

Apple CarPlay is being offered in more and more vehicles, often as standard equipment. BMW, though, charges for it. BMW currently offers CarPlay as a $ 300 option on cars equipped with navigation. This will change, though, as The Verge reports the German automaker will switch to a yearly subscription service.

CarPlay will be free for the first year, then cost $ 80 a year to continue the service. At the Detroit Auto Show, BMW technology product manager Don Smith explained that there’s actually a customer benefit to doing it this way. “This allows the customer to switch devices. A lot of people buy [CarPlay] and think it’s OK, but sometimes they stop using it or switch to Android.” If a customer decided to keep the service over the course of a three-year lease, they would end up paying less than the one-time cost of $ 300, as the first three years would cost just $ 160. Four would cost $ 240.

Autoblog reached out to BMW, and a spokesperson confirmed the details for the U.S. market, reiterating the benefit to lessees.

BMW currently doesn’t offer Android Auto. Late last year, the automaker announced (with a really slick video) that all new BMW and Mini models would offer Amazon Alexa as an in-car service in 2018. Smith told The Verge that BMW models will also offer Google Assistant later this year.

Spotify, Google Play Music and the BBC’s iPlayer Radio all work with Apple’s CarPlay. Now Tidal users can get in on the action, too; the company tweeted the compatibility of its streaming app with the iOS-based in-car system.

Tidal says that subscribers will be able to access all their favorite music and playlists from CarPlay-enabled dashboard systems. The news comes just a couple of weeks after Tidal announced that its customers could finally control their music on Sonos speakers with the Tidal app itself.

Apple CarPlay is moving beyond the car and into the motorcycle.

Honda this week announced its new 2018 Gold Wing, the first bike to come equipped with Apple’s infotainment system. It will arrive next February and start at $ 23,500.

As noted by CNET’s Road Show blog, CarPlay’s implementation on the Gold Wing is a bit different from what it looks like on a four-wheeled automobile. The bike includes a 7-inch LCD display that shows the usual iOS-style interface, but it’s not touch-enabled. Instead, you can use a four-way joystick on the left grip or a rotary controller on the tank to get around. The latter could be tricky to manage when you’re actually on the move, but from there, you can access the usual Apple Maps, personal music libraries, iMessages, and the like.

For many, BBC radio is synonymous with driving. When you’re stuck in a traffic jam, holiday road trip or boring post-work commute, sometimes the best company is a never-ending playlist punctuated with cheerful DJ chatter. For the longest time, that’s meant FM airwaves, but now of course you can use the iPlayer Radio app too. Today, the BBC is going one step further with support for Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto platforms. If you have a compatible in-car entertainment system, or don’t mind sticking your Android phone to the dashboard, you can now use these large, touch-friendly interfaces while you’re out on the road.

Both the CarPlay and Android Auto versions of iPlayer Radio come with four main sections. “Stations” lists all of the national and local stations broadcasting live across the UK. Downloads, meanwhile, is an offline playlist filled with shows and performances that you’ve previously bookmarked online or through the app. Listen Later contains all the episodes you’ve added to, well, Listen Later (it’s supposed to be like your very own station) and Following is a shortcut to shows you’ve subscribed to. Both platforms have simplified, touch-friendly layouts, and with Android Auto you can use your voice to move around the menus.
